yep, this is NOT a "how to get rich quick" book but rather a pretty simple layout of starter questions for those who thought they knew just enough and for those who are just beginning. i bought this as one graduation gift for my niece and while i doubt she will soak up ALL the info, it's not an intimidating book so she should get some good out of it. (heck, i did.. i read it cover to cover before giving it to her!!)

If you want to skip the motivational money books and the how-to-get-rich formulas and just get real answers to real money questions, buy this book. Peter Sanders answers everything from "What is a credit score?" to "What is an exchange traded fund?" and more. I recommend "The 250 Personal Finance Questions Everyone Should Ask" as a starter personal finance book and as a reference guide to keep handy as you read finance news and make financial decisions.

Reading this book is a great start to understanding money and controlling your financial future.

A Jesus book of substance

Review Date: 2008-01-27
I was reading N. T. Wright's, The New Testament & the People of God, when he recommended ch. 4 of Ben Meyer's book, The Aims of Jesus, as giving "what is probably the finest statement on historical method by a practicing contemporary New Testament scholar" (Wright p. 98 n32). Meyer died in 1995. Wright has written a new introduction to this edition of Meyer's book, indicating that "we are dealing with a book which stands out from the crowd" (Meyer, p. 9l)

I took his recommendation, read Meyer's chapter on historical method, and I have to agree that this is a superb discussion on method but it also gives a realistic view of the historical Jesus in the midst of postmodern reconstructions by people such as J. D. Crossan.

Meyer's historical method involves 4 principles: (1) History is knowledge; (2) Historical knowledge is inferential; (3) The technique of history is hypothesis; and (4) Hypotheses require verification (pp. 88-92). The practice of this method goes through these steps: questions (about the topic), developing hypotheses to test, and verification or otherwise of the hypotheses. This requires, interpretation and explanation, controlling the data, establishing the facts, and arriving at conclusions that are "beyond criticism" (ch. 4).

The beauty of this book is that Meyer then fleshes out his application of this method to examine the Jesus of history and faith. In discovering "the aims of Jesus," he pursues the judgment and salvation of Israel through an understanding of John the Baptist. The public proclamation and career of Jesus is found in the Gospels. He also assesses "the secret of the reign of God" (ch. 8) before arriving at his conclusions.

While critical scholars of the Quest have used criteria for historicity such as embarrassment, discontinuity, multiple attestation, coherence, rejection & execution (Crossan 1998), Meyer prefers to describe these as indices of historicity that "will necessarily be open, supple, and delicate. . . No method will be admitted to which caution, nuance, and the admission of doubt are alien" (Meyer p. 84).

Meyer comes to the Gospels with a view that they have data on past events about Jesus, but he comes without a prior view about genre. This means that the data are examined without excluding "the possibility of legend, midrash, folklore, parable, paradigm, and so forth" (p. 72).

He asks what conclusion can be drawn from the form critical approach that "the form of the gospel traditions is narrative about Jesus but their substance is the earliest church's expression of its own self-understanding and concerns". He rejects it as an "inexplicable" supposition (pp. 82-83).

This is not a bedtime storybook but is a scholar's book for scholars of the historical Jesus. But be warned! He gives a solid review of the skeptical quest for the historical Jesus from Reimarus onwards, observing that "scholars of the Straussian cast, like Wrede or Bultmann, make no effort to reconstruct history, whereas the fearless hypotheses of a Reimarus or a Schweitzer collapse like playing cards" (Meyer p. 24). Meyer could have applied the same judgment to the fellows of the Jesus Seminar and questers such as Funk, Crossan, Mack & Borg.

This is an outstanding book defining methodology, assessing Jesus from gospel data, and showing how the Gospel materials about Jesus can be scrutinised on solid historical grounds.

One of the most important books on Jesus ever written

It's great to see this book back in print. I read it about 15 years ago, and it, along with N. T. Wright's New Testament and the People of God, Jesus and the Victory of God, and What St. Paul Really Said completely rearranged my thinking about Christianity, eventually leading me from evangelical Protestantism to Roman Catholicism.

The Aims of Jesus literally revolutionized Jesus studies. If nothing else, it contributed two lasting achievements: it made critical realism the hermeneutic norm, and it launched the Third Quest for the historical Jesus, followed by Wright, Witherington, Meier, and others.

The idea behind the book is really rather simple: Let's treat Jesus like any other historical figure, such as Alexander the Great. That is, let's see if we can determine what Jesus' project was, what he hoped to accomplish, what his aims in life were. Can we find out what he thought his purpose on earth was, and can we also make a determination about how successful he was?

In order to be able to do this, it's necessary to get proper "hermeneutic access" to the materials that give an account of his life, primarily the New Testament gospels and letters. That's where "critical realism" comes in--which is simply a method for analyzing texts. It involves situating texts in their proper community context, looking at their historical value in relation to the events they recount, placing the figures they portray (primarily Jesus and the Disciples) in their early first century Jewish setting, and assessing the movement that arose as a consequence of their lives and acts. It is not generally concerned with determining the authenticity of particular sayings; rather it is more concerned with the picture that emerges from a "hermeneutics of generosity" as opposed to a "hermeneutics of suspicion" which has dominated Jesus studies for the past three and a half centuries.

What you get with this approach is a way to link the most important aspects of Jesus' life and mission together: his Jewish background, his preaching ministry, his death and resurrection, the documents that recount these events, and the movement that arose following his departure from this earth.

If the conclusions are not startlingly original, the book nevertheless provides readers with new access to who Jesus was (and is, for Christians), and, especially, to the events of his life in relation to the rise of the Early Church.

Ben F. Meyer was certainly one of the greatest Jesus scholars of the last century. It would also be wonderful to have his other classic text, The Early Christians: Their World Mission and Self-Discovery, back in print.

As a teacher, parent and reading specialist I have used "Alligators, Monsters and Cool School Poems" for years in my classroom and with my own children. The poems are ones the kids can relate to and enjoy, while also modeling different poetry styles. Student's imaginations are sparked and they are eager to create their own poems. There are 3 parts to this book. First is a series of fun poems about and for kids. The second part includes several poems and space for children to illustrate the poems on their own. The last part is for children to write their own ideas and poems. Some of my favorites from this author include: "First Day of School", "Keep a Journal", "The Terrible Zoor", "School Lunch" and "Immigration". The black and white illustrations (by the author's son) are fun and exciting. Addie Meyer Sanders' poetry reminds me of Shel Silverstein's. Kids, parents and teachers will love this book and read it again many times.

Great text for multivariate stats for non-honchos
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-23
I assigned this text to my graduate class in an organizational psych program. They are not going to be great quantitative analysts, but they do need to know how to do things and why. This text is easy to read, has excellent examples, and also has online exercises, complete with practice data sets. The students told me they really like the text. You don't hear that often about stats textbooks. As the graduate student earlier said, it's not going to satisfy those who will really need the ins and outs of how the algorithms are derived, but for someone who wants to know the rules, requirements, methods and techniques, this book is excellent. It's also great for someone who is quite competent at multivariate analysis and wants to learn a new method. Start with this book, then add a more complex text. My only real complaint is that in the logistic regression chapter, it didn't cover ordinal regression. We didn't use, however, all chapters of the book: it has enough for two semesters (although I must say, I think structural modeling should be taught as a separate course, but then I learned it with the full treatment of matrices and partial derivatives).

couldn't have finished my thesis without it

This is probably one of the most straightforward statistics books i have used. It got me through my MA's and now I am relying on it to finish my PhD dissertation. If you are looking for a quick answer to a review, or simply looking for a statistics book to buy, "BUY IT NOW."

I am a phD student in applied child development who does a lot of applied and educational research. This book has all the basic details and general ideas about statistics that most researchers would use, ranging from basic bivariate comparisons to advanced ideas such as factor analysis. It presents each topic in a very straightforward manner with simple terms and examples (mostly in psychology), and each chapter is accompanied by a chapter on how to implement the particular statistical procedure in SPSS. Unlike other books where they either present you with the mathematics of each statistical procedure, or books where they assumes you know what procedure to use and only present you with SPSS commands, this book presents both, though heavier on the latter.

This is particularly good for researchers like myself who need just enough information to choose which procedure to use (and not really needing to know all the mathematical proofs) and need step by step instructions to compute the statistics on SPSS (with screenshots, arrows pointing to what buttons to press, what to read, etc). However, please note that all the SPSS chapters, which include detailed screenshots, would probably make sense to people who are using SPSS 13.0 to SPSS 15.0 (12.0 would probably be fine, but I have never used anything before 12.0 so I can't comment on that). I imagine that version 16 would likely be the same, but being heavy on screenshots of a particular version of SPSS (windows version, nonetheless) means that this book would not last forever. Though, unless SPSS makes hugh interface changes in the future, anyone reading this book should be able to follow.

The biggest ++ of this book, from my perspective, is the way this book presents each example statistical problem (again, psychology heavy). It begins each concept chapter with an example research question, details why a particular statistical procedure is appropriate, tells you what to look for, assumptions underlying the statistics, basic ideas and basic algorithms of the statistics, and then what the statistics would show you. Then, the accompanying SPSS chapter follows with the SAME research problem, shows you how to find if the sample distribution satisfies assumptions in SPSS (with screenshots tell you which button to press!!!), tell you what numbers to look for (sometimes with assumption guidelines), what commands to use to run the statistical procedure(s), a detailed description of the output and what numbers to look for, and most importantly, an APA style example write up, with APA style charts and tables when appropriate.

You can tell that I LOVE THIS BOOK!~

However, I am not a statistician or a psychometrician. This book is not intended for people who are studying statistics or psychometrics. It does not provide detailed proofs, which is fine by me but many students would probably find this lacking. Further, it covers everything from data screening to MANOVA and Exploratory Factor Analysis well, but not anything beyond that (an introduction to confirmatory factor analysis using Amos is provided, but Amos, though related to SPSS, is not the most widely used CFA tool). Further, it presents only parametric data analysis techniques, which are common for most researchers. However, for my current research, I supplement this book with Pett's book on non-parametric statistics.

This is a one-of-a-kind resource that educators (and so many others) will find very helpful. The subject of disclosure (how, when, where, who) is not commonly covered in other texts on autism and disability-- even though it is so important. Educators and other support people will learn so much from the voices of these individuals on the spectrum. My favorite chapter is Stephen Shore's (author of Beyond the Wall) piece on how students with disabilities can participate in their own educational programs- it is such a practical AND a thoughtful chapter. Shore gives dozens of great examples of how even the youngest child can serve as an agent in his/her own life and education. Thumbs WAY up on this unique and helpful text!

I Want to Tell You

This book is the answer to every person on the autism/Asperger's (a/A) spectrum's prayer. People with Asperger's are empowered with knowledge of what this neurobiological condition entails and how to act as their own advocates. For people on the a/A spectrum, please make this book your best friend. It will certainly pave the way down the Long & Winding Road to social acceptance.

Tacit Social Codes & Rules are often ambiguous and confusing to those on the a/A spectrum. This book does an excellent job of demystifying those rules. Another road block people with Asperger's face is being misinterpreted -- what seems clear and direct and perfectly a propos to somebody on the spectrum sometimes comes over as a social faux pas. George Harrison explained this aspect very well in his 1966 classic, "I Want to Tell You," with the lyric "but if I seem to act unkind, it's only me, it's not my mind. That is confusing things."

One of the major challenges people with Asperger's contend with is determining whether or not to disclose this diagnosis and if so, to whom. This book helps clarify many of those questions and serves as a link to communicating with the neurotypical (NT) population.

I love this book!

This book is a very good source of information if you are building a model of this aircraft and want to have it look like the actual aircraft. It also tells a brief history of this aircraft and the other programs that this aircraft was involved in, as well as what it was designed to do. The book also briefly talks about the three other aircraft that this aircraft inspired, but were never built past the prototype stage.

My name is Michael L. Oaks, of Grants Pass, Oregon. If you were ever associated in any way, with the B-36 aircraft as I was, this book is a "must have" for your library. It tells the story of the greatest "Cold War" aircraft made. It covers all of the various models of the B-36 to even the variations developed from it such as the C-199 Cargo type etc. The book is in 8 1/2x 11 landscape, glossy format, with lots of photo's of everything from crashes, tail markings (in color). In fact, its 50 pages cover just about every detail about this magnificant aircraft, from the flight deck, to the various manned stations through-out the "Peacemaker". It gives a brief history of the various Bomb wings, as well as the serial numbers of all of the B-36's. A must for the aircraft enthusiast. My own personal experience with the B-36 was as an engine mechanic from 1951 through 1954. Great book! Great store! and have a Great day!
