Truly fascinating glimpse of our judicial system at work
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-09
These tapes are fascinating! Regardless of how you feel about the issues involved, to hear the arguements made on both sides, and the questions of the justices as they weigh issues in a forum that is protecting our individual rights and our system of government is truly riveting. They make the Supreme Court come alive. And the editors have done a fine job of appropriate commentary to place each case argued in context, and then to further explain what has happened concerning the issue involved since the case was decided. You will want to share the tapes with everyone you know.

As a non-reviewer of this non-existant item with no picture, no reviews, no information about the content of the book, no publisher's data or review, I can only hope I don't piss people off by offering a review. Inasmuch as only the title is available, and the book no longer exists, I will review the title. It certainly offers valid, empirically verifiable preferences. It is highly recommended advice!

Takes away the sour taste left by Margot Peters's biography.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1998-06-12
Sarton was a master of the art of letter-writing. The notes are useful, the editing is superb, and Sarton shines through as a rare, passionate, and exacting friend and lover. My only complaint is that this volume is "selected," not "complete." I'm looking forward to Susan Sherman's next presentation of the gentle art to which Sarton stayed dedicated throughout her life.

An exquisite, artbook presenting the life and works of artist, poet, teacher, and activist May Stevens
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-11
May Stevens is an exquisite, artbook presenting the life and works of artist, poet, teacher, and activist May Stevens, whose prestigious paintings are among the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Brooklyn Museum, and many more. Presenting a matter-of-fact "conversation" with May Stevens that reveals at length her history, motivations, styles, motifs, and other nuances side-by-side with a breathtaking gallery of black-and-white photographs and full-color plates, May Stevens thoroughly explores both the visual originality and the philosophical subtext of Stevens' art. Highly recommended!

Blending Cultures

Titles can be misleading. "May the Angels Watch Over You" is not a bunch of little old lady poems. It is a collection of free verse reflecting the experiences and thoughts of a vibrant, young author with one foot in Africa, one in America and her head in the Baha'i Faith. This American Baha'i author married a man from Sierra Leone, and both cultures have become a part of her life seen from her Baha'i perspective of the unity of all humanity. Long before Doris' Lessing's plea for books for Africa in her Nobel prize acceptance speech, McMains had established a foundation to get books to Sierra Leone, her action, like Lessing's, fueled by compassion born of participating with Africans in Africa.
Each poem portrays a moment or an impression. Some we recognize from our own lives, as I recognize my own childhood in "A Perfect House." Some of the African poems like "Child Soldiers in Northern Uganda" and "A Raid in Sierra Leone" give a taste of something most of us have not experienced, bittersweet impressions of life in a war-torn African country. Some of the reflective poetry like "Quantum Mechanics" and "World Peace" ruminate on thoughts like how can a perfect virtue, which is a reflection of God, be found in our imperfect world. Some like "Teenage Man" and "Teenage Pregnancy" reflect on growing pains universal to all humanity. Many like "Answers" are informed by her faith that all the founders of major world religions had a true message from God.
The poems are not arranged in any specific order, which gives me a sense of moving back and forth weaving together American-ness, African-ness, and Baha'i-ness into a rich tapestry of experience as the author does each day of her life.

The church was booked, the flowers arranged- and the groom was AWOL! Finding her fiance was one more item on no-nonsense Savannah Sweetwater's to do list. Entertaining the best man- her fiance's roguish brother- was not! ** Cash Walker radiated a heat that burned up Savannah's cool control. He was arrogant, insufferable- and totally irresistible. As the clock ticked down the days to her wedding, it was Cash who stayed by her side, strong and true. Against all logic and the order she held dear, Savannah found herself falling for a white knight in black-sheep's clothing- a man who would never betray his missing brother...
