My nine year old daughter virtually consumed this biography. This is the 3rd book she has read in this series, and she has asked for more. I have read them along with her--they are appropriate for 8-10 year olds, interesting, accessible, but never condescending or preachy. Based on my knowledge of the subjects, they are only marginally fictionalized. In a world of pop singers and barely literate actresses, it is a pleaseure to be able to provide real heroes and heroines that modern kids will enjoy and be inspired by.

This is an absolutely breathtaking collection of twenty-nine thrillers from Louisa May Alcott. Each story that I read kept me up until the wee hours of the morning because they were so good! And after I was done reading them, I was still thinking about them for days on end. Powerful women, betrayal, wards/guardians, romance, murder... each plays a delectable part in these brilliant novellettes. You have the masterfully manipulative Jean Muir in the famous story "Behind a Mask: Or a Woman's Power", the admirable villain in "A Nurse's Story", the wonderful Russian/Parisian love story of "Taming a Tartar", the heroic villainess in "The Mysterious Key, and What it Opened", an exquisite character study in "A Marble Woman: or, The Mysterious Model", dark tragedy and hints of incest in "A Whisper in the Dark", and the shockingly villainous hero in "La Jeune; or Actress and Woman" or "A Laugh and A Look". Then there is the delightfully frustrating "My Mysterious Mademoiselle", in which the protagonist is thwarted rather severely in his love interest. Love has a main role in almost all of these stories; usually emphasizing the power balance between the sexes. Alcott has a way of standing things on their heads, and is a master of the surprise ending.

Worth every minute, worth every dollar, this collection includes all of the known thrillers of Alcott, as well as a remarkably throrough and informative introduction by Madeleine Stern.

I have enjoyed Louisa May Alcott's writings for a long time, so I was thrilled to find this book! I was very eager to read it and it did not disappoint me!

If you are a fan of Louisa May Alcott, this book is a MUST! It is packed full of great stuff.

In this anthology you will find four autobiographical stories and essays; a selection of her letters; five poems by L.M.A.; selections from her journals from age 14 to shortly before her death; and four of her short stories.

There is also a section titled "Remembering Louisa May Alcott." This portion includes essays, photographs, drawings and a poem. Fascinating!

Included at the back of the book are suggestions for further reading and a checklist of illustrations. It was very interesting to read about L.M.A and see photos of her and places she had lived.

Another interesting note is that her life was very similar to the March family in "Little Women".

This is a great book! Interesting and factual with much of Louisa's work I have not found anywhere else. Worth buying!

I had to do an research paper on Louisa May Alcott, and I had to basicly base my paper on what influenced her to write, why did she write about the things she did, and that such. I received this book and it was an excellent source, and it had all types of valuable information.

So many Bible commentaries are dry, dull and difficult. You may find the information you're looking for, but you have to wade through an enormous amount of theological verbiage just to find the one statement or thought that could help you to understand a verse.

This commentary (and the other volumes in this series, for that matter) is refreshingly different. R. Kent Hughes has a wonderful ability of teaching the Bible in a practical way that in no way waters down the passage, and this comes through in nearly every page of this book. Whether you're a pastor looking for sermon help, or you're a Bible study leader looking for fresh insights, or a Sunday school teaching looking for stimulating thoughts, this is the book (and series) for you. I have heard it said that R. Kent Hughes' commentaries on the books of the Bible is to the modern day church what Matthew Henry and Barclay's commentaries were to previous generations, and I agree. In fact, I think they are better.

New Book of May Swenson's Prose

May Swenson (1913-1989) has long been a personal favorite of mine. Much of her work is difficult to find, or out of print. Gardner McFall, a poet herself, has done a wonderful job of editing the prose, reviews, introductions and the correspondence between Elizabeth Bishop(1913-1979) and May Swenson, although there is much to be found in the St. Louis's, Washington University Archives, where the bulk of May's papers are housed, this is a generous selection.

I am hoping that the McFall book will set May's publishers to consider a "Complete Works" of the wonderful May Swenson. McFall, however, is to be applauded for her rounding up and editing of these important prose selections. The book, part of the prestigious "Poets on Poetry"series from the University of Michigan Press, is a gift to both fans and scholars alike.

A very fine issue. This easily cracks the mark, having a 3.60 average, which is the second highest American magazine story average this year I think, although only 5 tales here. I would even go to 4.25 for Telefunken Remix if I was doing that, and as the editor's intro says, it is most definitely strange, and worth persevering with, not being what you think it is at the start. So, three 4 out of 5 stories, or 2 and a 4.25. Rather well done.

There is a rather good article on nanotechnology and its various forms, complete with links to lists of stuff, and a debate about the dangers of little robots turning us into grey goo (they don't believe it is likely, at least not soon, apparently.)

Some reviews, the film Children of Men, and also a few books, including another Charlie Huston vampire detective book, apparently.

If an earlier issue was SF-lite, this one and the one before it make up for that, so it seems they are keeping that in mind.

A Student's Perspective

Despite more than 1,000 international legal instruments with at least one significant environmental provision, and environmental law systems in virtually all countries of the world, we are still seeing environmental quality deteriorate, sometimes at a significant rate. Why? Making Law Work: Environmental Compliance & Sustainable Development draws upon the best literature from law, economics, political science, and other disciplines to show that the answer is not always more law, but often more effective law. The book's succinct yet comprehensive approach to domestic and international environmental law and policy makes it a must read for both the environmentally conscious global citizen and the most studied of practitioners and policy makers.

Each Chapter begins with an introduction written by the Editors of Making Law Work, who represent some of the greatest international environmental lawyers and policy makers of our generation. These brief introductions serve to tie together the complex policies and theories examined in the excerpted articles - authored by a collection of the most visionary environmental minds of our day. By providing the reader with the framework within which to understand how the goals of sustainable development and environmental compliance can be achieved, the Editors allow every reader to engage themselves in these great environmental debates.

Making Law Work begins with the widely accepted premise that sustainable development depends upon good governance and that the rule of law is a necessary component. The authors go one step further by arguing that compliance is essential for the rule of law. Pointing out that the role of compliance is often insufficiently appreciated, it calls for strengthening compliance by empowering key actors, including civil society, developing new analytical tools, and building the capacity of both regulators and those they regulate.
The goal is to replace the culture of corruption, empower citizens to participate in governance, and foster the political will needed for reform. Individual chapters highlight the roles and experiences of specific actors and institutions, including Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), regulators, courts, and civil society. In addition, they evaluate various tools and strategies employed by these actors, including inspections, monitoring, sanctions, emissions-trading, public disclosure, and compliance assistance. This discussion concludes with a chapter on how public agencies, with their limited resources, chose between the wide range of tools and strategies available to address an array of environmental problems.

Ultimately, this work's greatest contribution is that it lays the foundation for the emerging field of environmental governance and suggests many important avenues for further research. As the book will likely become the bible for anyone interested in improving the effectiveness of environmental law, this vital and important work is required reading for anyone committed to improving environmental governance and making sustainable development a reality.
