I like Meg Daniels even more in Kelly's second book. I can relate to a woman who chooses to spend a winter weekend in Cape May. The quirky black humor is great; Kelly is kind of a Carl Hiaasen north. Keep 'em coming!

I highly recommend "Cape Mayhem" for any mystery reader whether they have ever been to Cape May or not. I particularly loved this book because it's about one of my favorite places, Cape May, NJ. and because of the character Meg Daniels, who first appeared in "Killing Time in Ocean City." Meg is an amateur sleuth who is witty, fun and manages to get herself into and out of all kinds of predicaments. Meg and an odd assortment of characters spend a winter week-end in a bed and breakfast only to find themselves involved in a murder. Meg sets out to solve the case along with a new romantic interest. This mystery includes suspense, humor, romance and surprises. What more could one want for some summer beach reading?

I bought this book initially because I grew up in Cape May. Am I glad I did. Not only is Ms. Kelly true to the Locale,I was pleasently suprised at the great mystery novel I landed on as well. Meg Daniels has become one of my favoite characters. Very sharp, witty, Combined smarty pants, with humor and morality, I look forward to reading the rest of Ms. Kellys offerings.A book chock full of great characters with excellent dialogue. This Travis McGee and Matthew Scudder fan has discovered another favorite. Read this book, You won't regret it.

Well, what a gem this turned out to be. I almost passed over it in the bookstore because the cover art seemed a little blah. Turns out you really CAN'T judge a book by it's cover! I actually didn't notice that this book was the second in a series until I was at home and settling down to read it. Fortunately, this book can be read just fine as a stand alone.

I am very impressed with the quality of writing. Good suspense is so hard to find...especially in the Christian market...so it was with great joy that I read well past my bedtime (and all common sense) to finish it up. The characters are likable and the spiritual message is conveyed with care and conviction.

My only complaint (and it's a small one) is that it takes Dani a ridiculously long time to figure out Will isn't the reporter he claims to be. That got on my nerves after a while but not enough to ruin the book....or even lower my rating.

Pick this one up right away, you won't regret it. Now, I'm off to buy the first in the series...

Simply amazing!

I loved the first book in this series and this one did not let me down! This was a wonderful, romantic Christian suspense novel.

Will and Dani are great characters that you truly want to get to know. I really like how Will developed and thought that was a great addition to this book. Definitely a close look at how to develop into a Christian.

Take the time to read this entire series - you will be glad you did!

Loved it!

Couldn't put it down! I have a love/hate relationship with writers that get you so into the story that you panic when the characters panic, etc. Worse yet is when you cannot put it down...you try to rationalize with yourself that it will still be there in the morning (it's 3am and you have to get up at 6am) and that it won't change if you close the book for a few hours of shut eye.

Loved it! I own/have read every book Susan has written. I have loaned several out and have had to purchace replacements because no one wants to give them back!

Escape To Morning is a wonderful book full of intrigue and danger and romance. Living on the Canadian border as I do, brought this book to life for me.......I could picture Fadima running though the woods with Will and Dannette tracking her!
What a wonderful story. It is a must read! Way to go Susan.

Dannette (Dani) Lundeen is a Search and Rescue worker who is more than capable of handling herself in difficult situations. Will Masterson, Homeland Security agent currently undercover as a reporter, is immediately impressed by her.

Dani however, does not think very highly of reporters, so Will has an uphill battle on his hands to get past Dani's defenses. But when Dani begins an independent search for a missing teenage girl in the woods near the Canadian border and runs into Will, also looking for the same girl, she wonders why a reporter is so determined to help with the search. And Will is bound to keep the truth from her.

Dani & Will quickly found a special place in my heart. Their personal & spiritual journey's were ones I recognized in my own life. Will is trying so hard to learn how to be "God's man." And Dani thinks she has a solid relationship with the Lord, until she begins to realize that there are some areas of her life she has not really trusted Him with.

Susan does a wonderful job weaving spiritual truths into a suspenseful storyline.

This book was very easy to use. It was just like vocabulary books you had in middle school. You start off learning things like prefixes, root words, suffixes etc. Then they start putting words together. It will help you understand medical terms when you break them down. The flash cards also help.

This is a great way to learn medical terminology. It's easy to understand, interesting and presented in a way that makes it easier to learn than just straight memorization. She was ten when she received it and it is age appropriate through 13 or so.

My daughter received this as a birthday gift and the most amazing thing happened. She stopped opening gifts and all of the girls sat right down and filled out this book. They spent almost an hour focused on this fantastic book....talking, comparing stories and ideas, laughing, teasing one another and sharing thoughts. It was wonderful.

I can't promise that everyone will get that reaction, but it's worth the chance; I give it to every 9-12 year old girl I need to buy a gift for.

A conversational, accessible perspective on orthodox Christianity
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-07
The authors use the framework of the Apostles' Creed to provide a helpful description of the Christian story and some of it's implications for the way we might live today.

This book is an especially good first step for those who are becoming disillusioned with an exclusively "head-based" evangelical perspective on faith. (IE - Christianity is about holding the right ideas.) It offers a simple invitation to begin to "try on" the idea that doubt is an essential part of faith.

Per James Pond's review (below), the authors clearly wrestle with these questions in the context of orthodox Christianity, and do not engage with a larger, global perspective on Spirituality.

Living the Questions

Review Date: 2006-03-08
I am one of the skeptics this book was written for. I also happen to be a Christian. The authors of this book not only understand, but promote, the idea that the two can coexist. As they quote from Dostoyevsky: "Sometimes the greatest act of faith is in the doubting."

What a gift it is to go on this 30-day journey with people who readiily acknowledge how fragile faith can often feel. Larson and Mitchell are refreshingly honest about their own doubts and questions, which is probably why so much of it resonates with me. They actually encourage us to be skeptics, in the healthiest sense of the word, leaving room for the mystery that is God. If you're looking for answers, look elsewhere. If you're open to the value of living with questions, you will probably appreciate, as I did, what this book has to offer. An excellent choice for devotional reading and meditation, regardless of where you are in your journey.

I found this book to be a wonderful tool to share with friends who are asking questions about God and looking for something to help them along. I like the conversational approach, the 30 day format, the way it breaks down the Apostle's Creed and helps the reader understand what it is all about. I have given numerous copies to friends who are at various places in their spiritual journey, some just starting out, others further along, and all have remarked that this book was very helpful to them.

What a great little book! The authors take the time to explore spiritual questions, rather than simply rushing to answers; and each writes with a humor, honesty and humility that I enjoyed and appreciated.

The daily readings are refreshing and challenging - providing a unique and interesting mix of scripture, creed and thoughts on faith. I used the book as devotional reading and have returned several times to chapters like "What About When Doubt Overshadows Belief?" and "Will Life Ever Be the Way It's Supposed to Be?"

I'm grateful to have this book - and have already given copies to friends

Thankful for "A Place for Skeptics"

After reading A Place for Skeptics...I could have entitled it "A Place for my Friends and I". All my life I have heard the Apostles Creed, and this book helped me to take the next step in understanding my faith and belief in God. More than that, this book has been a helpful tool for me to give to friends as they try to understand their own beliefs in God, and how those beliefs make it into their everyday lives.

A Place for Skeptics is an excellent resource for making the bridge between God...Religion...and your everyday common life. It invites you to explore the reality that God does bring Real Answers to Real Life.....

This book was the best romance I have read in a long time. You cared about the characters, you wanted to know more about them... all of them from the two butlers Daniel & Philip to the family of Lord North. Fine job by the author. I was engrossed in the story at the end and didn't want it to end. I wanted to know more about the dashing earl's family and past, and more about Rebecca's newfound family.
I look forward to discovering her other books.

In escaping a lecherous employer in the dark of night, with pursuers hot on her heels, a spunky but penniless teenager was almost run down by a speeding carriage. Fate lent Rebecca Neville a hand when the fleeing occupant in the carriage, the Countess Of Stanmore who was bound for the colonies took her along - together with the Countess's newborn babe.

When the young mother died during the ocean crossing, Rebecca took the infant into her care and raised him as her own. Swearing never to return to her homeland, Rebecca strived to make a new life for herself and the child in the new country.

Yet ten years later when the Earl Of Stanmore tracked down his missing son and heir, Rebecca had no choice but to accompany her boy back to England to ensure his well-being.

Towards the end, there's a surprise secret about Rebecca that'll take your breath away.

This book also introduces characters who'll go on to have their own stories in "THE REBEL" and "BORROWED DREAMS". Make sure you read "THE PROMISE" before reading "THE REBEL" otherwise the surprise will be spoilt.

"THE PROMISE" offers an appealing version from a nine-year old child's viewpoint which is not found in many romance novels. This delightful aspect should be pursued by authors more often.

More than just a guide to the proper care of rats, Nick Mays' excellent book is also a history of human-rat relations, an introduction to rat genetics, and a full color guide to many of the breeds of "fancy" rats. Well-written and logically organized, this is the best kind of reference book: both informative and fun to read. Although the book's historical survey of the "rat fancy" concentrates primarily on the United Kingdom, this fascinating story will surely be appreciated by rat lovers throughout the world.

Mays not only creates an accurate and affectionate portrait of the domesticated rat, but he also creates a comparable portrait of those rat fanciers who have for generations taken these intelligent and personable creatures into our homes and hearts. This book is a tribute to the strength of the bonds that can exist between members of different species.

I have read the book The Proper Care Of Fancy Rats (t.f.h.) - repeatedly - and have found the information to be invaluable. It covers basic care, illnesses, varieties and standards, breeding and some of the basics of rat genetics. It also includes a lot of beautiful full color photos. I've read a few other books on rodent care, none of which were as detailed as this (those books all ended up in a used book store). I would HIGHLY suggest that every rat owner purchase this book and keep it handy. Its easy to follow and covers all the bases!

I have gone so far as to highlight passages and paragraphs that are of significance to me in my life. I have an almost biblical reverence for this book and find it hard to believe that it is NOT true, the introduction by Richard Matheson, captured my imagination, the book captured my soul. I have recomended and urged all my friends who have lost a loved one to read this book and many have expressed to me a deep appreciation, which I can take no credit for. For me, this book has answered so many questions and eased so many of my worries. If the movie can convey half as much as the book did, I predict a bigger box office success than Ghost. (Which by the was I was convinced Richard Matheson wrote!)

This book will open your eyes and heart to deeper truth.

This book has no equal. "What Dreams May Come" will consume you, and take you to a place that you have ONLY "dreamed" of. It touches so many issues that many find so dear to their souls (love, compassion, God, and the power of the spirit). If you read one book this year, make this the one. You will never think the same way about death. A person who is beyond hope because of some dreaded disease or in major depression should "read" and "re-read" this book. You will never look at life or death the same way again. Just like Jewel's song says "Only kindness matters". The movie is also good, but the book has more detailing. Take a look into your soul and find a new piece of mind and a new perspective of yourself! Make every day count towards a new goal and make your life what 'you' want it to be.

This is a testimony to the strength of women and the power of music to soothe the soul. Music is a common ground for all people and this true story illustrates how beautiful sounds calm and restore our spirits and, in this story, that of the oppressors. There must be thousands of heroic folks who lived through this terrible war with strength and dignity. I am always glad to find another inspiring story.

It wasn't long ago that America watched "Paradise Road" in movie theaters across the country. Audiences were captivated with the story of a young girl and her family's struggle to survive imprisonment by the Japanese. Like many moviegoers today, the audience may not have read the inspirational work behind the motion picture. Helen Colijn's Song of Survival is a real story. The experiences that Coljin documents in her work are real. The author gives her readers a glimpse of her life, and that of the other women imprisoned in Southeast Asia by the Japanese during World War II. Readers follow Colijn through the experiences of a shipwreck, being captured, and being imprisoned for three-and-a-half years.

Based on her original manuscript written just after her imprisonment, Colijn's story is one of hope and perseverance. Many other books written by soldiers and survivors of World War II are laden with hardship and sadness especially those books detailing the accounts of brutality of the Japanese during their quest to expand their empire westward through Asia such as The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang. Colijn's story is unique in that it details true survival of not just the body of the imprisoned, but the soul as well. The women of the camp in which Colijn was imprisoned used music to life their spirits and "free their souls" from detainment.

Reading a book such as Song of Survival can open up a new door to the way in which we learn about prisoners of war. Colijn describes disease and starvation leading to the deaths of more than one-third of the population of the camp (Colijn 159-169). "Before our internment was over, twenty-six Dutch children lost their mothers," she says (Colijn 162). But all the while, the women kept their spirits from breaking entirely through singing classical songs and even performing vocal concerts among themselves (Colijn129-146). Colijn gives her readers an idea of the sisterhood within her camp among the prisoners. This feeling of family is often discussed within the realm of the formation of a brotherhood-such as is seen in Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose--of soldiers, but is rarely seen in accounts of imprisonment. The work is so poignant because Colijn is able to draw from true personal experiences.

The author teaches her readers that even during imprisonment, with just a little faith and a little music, souls will have the ability to wander free. By using an effective autobiographical format, Colijn tells her story from a very personal perspective. She recalls the events so vividly that it is impossible for readers not to feel the same emotions that the prisoners felt. Colijn's work is so well crafted that even her feelings of optimism shine through the seemingly unpromising situation. As trite as it may seem, Colijn notes that several women even made "liberation dresses" to wear for the day that their camp was liberated by the Allied forces (Colijn 129).

A book such as Colijn's is an important element in any study of World War II as it not only brings to light the idea of hope in spite of hardship, but it also shows what seems to be a neglected area of war accounts-the struggle of women as prisoners of war. A personal account of the struggles of being imprisoned by the Japanese that is so seasoned with hope is rarely seen. Colijn serves the women of her camp well with Song of Survival. With the work of one author, hundreds of women's stories will live on to be read by future generations who will bear witness to the events taking place-the immense struggle-during World War II. Song of Survival will live on long after the last survivor passes away. It will carry a message of faith and perseverance for the women in Colijn's camp who kept hope alive through their immense personal strength.

Men might not have prevailed like this heroines.

When one reads of the hardships that Colijn and her fellow inmates lived through, one expects that they would have focused on survival, and thrown all other concerns to the wind. There were some who did, but not others. Many strove to keep a modicum of loveliness in their lives. Sometimes, all they could do was escape to memories of their past, either through daydreaming or conversation. There were instances, however, of actual impact on their current situation, including a refusal of some inmates to lick their plates(though food was scarce), struggles to live in peace and harmony with fellow inmates, and, most of all, the musical peformances.

You might imagine that if you were living in a filthy prison camp where people were dropping like flies, you would owe it to yourself to fight for your survival tooth and nail, even against the other inmates, and the furthest thing from your mind would be music. You would need to look out for number one, period. Colijn believes that many more of them might have perished, or, at least, might not have come out as well, had there not been a commitment to community and beauty in that abject misery. In a sense, this book tells about war heroines.

I found it interesting that Julian May viewed her Galactic Milieu Trilogy as her tour de force. She thought about it for years according to her interviews. She wrote the Pliocene Series as a means of introducing the reader to many of the concepts she thought might be difficult to digest without it. According to her, she wrote the first two books of the Pliocene Saga in like two months! Unbelievable!

That being said, I thought Intervention and the Galactic Milieu series were a touch below the Pliocene. There was less of what I loved-- vivid, textured imagery evoked by her silky smooth prose. Despite being set in a 22nd century universe controlled by psychics, the setting of these books were more mundane than the Saga. While some of her descriptive prose was lovely, it didn't dominate as in other books. I almost got the sense that May felt like there was too much to convey, too much to write, without enough space. What was planned as a Trilogy became Intervention plus Galactic Milieu. And even then there was so much to cover.

I also felt that for the events that changed the face of humanity, she could have come up with better antagonists. Pliocene always had an epic sense-- this one didn't even though the fate of humanity was at stake. I still very much enjoyed May's characters-- but somehow they lacked the soul that I was used to from her earlier works. In fact, the only character I felt I knew as well as any of the major protagonists from Pliocene was Uncle Rogi-- and while lovable, he owns a bookstore... he has none of the angst that many of May's characters from Pliocene had that made them so dramatic.

Still, May is one of the best in the business, and she creates a fascinating, creative universe in Intervention-- the beginnings of the Galactic Milieu.

A Pliocene Sequel - A great read for different reasons.

I enjoyed the Pliocene series very much and although the Milieu series, introduced by the novel Surveillance, is different in tone and texture it is still very good but for different reasons.

The Pliocene series explored, in barbarically delightful drama, all the vagaries and emotional flaws that make us uniquely human. The Milieu series explores the same thing but in high-minded, civilized fashion, with splashes of anachronistic barbarity thrown in. The story is set among the awesome backdrop of rapidly evolving mental and technological power, with all the drama, emotion, and beauty that comes with it.

But what I really like about the Milieu series is the main character, Rogi (a.k.a. Roger). Rogi tells the story in all five Milieu books, but he is also very much a part of all that happens. Indeed, as he long suspects, he is actually much of the cause of all that happens either through delusional perceptions or extraterrestrial manipulation. That is the real gem of the story. Either way it doesn't matter, because he is lovable, annoying, and examplifies all of our humanistically quirky qualities. I have read the Milieu series more times than the Pliocene series because of Rogi.

This is my favorite of the survallence series. Rogi is finally introduced, and is also on of the most important humans ever born (catspaw of the Lymlik). I love the way modern life is blended into the Sci-Fi epic, especially Denis's "60-minutes" interview when he shocks the world with metaphysic power.

I began to think that as the great masters of the Golden Age of Science Fiction began to die off or their work diminshed, that we would not see the combination of plot, character, and scientific thought that characterized so much of that work.

And then I read "Surveillance"...

No one recommended the book to me; it just attracted my attention on the shelf, with it's interesting cover. Then I began to read and it was if I was there. The book described places I knew (I grew up in VT, and lived not that far from Hanover, NH), was filled with ideas that seemed simple and elegant. Evolution takes its next step -- first it builds the body, then it builds the mind.

It's as close as you get to the idea of superheroes and supervillains, without the skin-tight spandex uniforms and stilted expostulation. Seemingly ordinary individuals discover they have incredible powers and then are forced to come to grips with them. Some decide to use the power altruistically, some with malice. And all the while they are being observed...

"Surveillance" touches on so many themes of humanity, our desire to grow together as a species, our mutual distrust, the rise of avarice, coming to grips with forces we barely comprehend, the rush of technology, and the desire to find kindred spirits among the stars. It is a whirlwind read and the best part is that it is only the beginning of a saga that has no equal. If you're looking to be challenged on many levels, this is the kind of literature you seek.

Long before George Lucas thought of making a prequel to Star wars, Julian May revisited the universe of her Pliocene Exile to tell us the origins of the story, though with a time line like this, the word origin is meaningless.

Meet Rogatien Remillard (Rogi for short - pronounced Rogue He) and his twin brother Donatien (Don). Born in late 1945, just months after Hiroshima, the two have a relatively normal childhood. Normal, that is, except for their developing mental powers and Rogi's regular visits from a mysterious, benevolent, invisible entity he dubs Le Phantome Familier - The Family Ghost.

As the twins mature, they take very diferent paths. Rogi, sterilised in his youth by the measels, acts as defacto father for his nephew Denis, raising him with love and teaching him to use his awesome mental gifts. Denis' father Don, scared by his sons potential takes to the bottle, and eventually learns to use his own mental abiliies for personal gain. Then, offended by his brothers "theft" of his firstborn, Don takes over the rearing of his second son Victor, teaching him all the malitious mental tricks he has perfected.

Denis, raised in love by his uncle, protected from his own fathers malice by his indomitable mental strength, becomes a paragon to psychics everywhere, devoting his life to further understanding humanities mental potential. Victor, corrupted from birth by his father, becomes a truly dark individual, wielding his awesome mental coercion for his own benefit, infiltrating the mafia, and eventually threatening the world. The two brothers carry the contrast between Rogi and Don to the next generation, and to the next level of mental ability.

Carefully observing it all, as they have for millenia, the pacifist psychic aliens of the Galactic Milieu await the maturation of the Human Mind, knowing as they do that it will be the most glorious Mind in the Glalaxy, and will enrich the Milieu fantastically. But nothing is certain, and humanity may follow the path of thousands of other races who failed - into self - annihilation.

Mankinds potential for Good, is matched only by its potential for Evil.
