Great, Concise Information On Efective Communication
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-04

This is a great little manual to keep in your briefcase or on your desk! I read it in less than an hour, and now I have gone back through it several times to re-read and grasp the significance of the various points. I especially like the section titled "Hearing is Passive. Listening is Active." Carl Mays writes that according to a major survey, 54% of our communication time is spent in supposedly listening to other people. Yet, this same survey maintains that the average listening retention factor is only 13 to 17%. (This means that we are not really listening to 83-87% of what we hear!)

Mays goes on to write about our "Listening Barriers." One of them is: You are concentrating on what you are going to say when the other person finishes talking (or when he or she pauses to take a breath) rather than concentrating on what the person is saying. In this same section, Mays presents "How To Listen To A Customer" and then deals with listening in other areas of life, such as in the family and in conversational communication.

It's difficult to choose favorites from the dozen or so sections, but I also really like the section titled "Embrace the Value of Feedback." Mays says that feedback is often given and received poorly. Because it is frequently mishandled, people on both the giving and receiving ends tend to shy away from it. They surround it with mystery and see it as a momentous event in which two humans are opponents. It doesn't have to be this way, he explains.

Mays has written a no-nonsense book with a lot of meat, smoothly illustrated with specific points and easy-to-understand examples and applications.

Never a Dull Moment...

You might expect a book full of court transcripts dull; in fact I thought it would be a little dry. But I've been amazed by this book. I picked it up on a sale table in a book store - and came here to see if I could find more in the series - One thing strikes you right away - Supreme Court justices are SMART. The second thing that strikes you is that they have a huge amount of power, but are subject to the same prejudices and personal attachments that affect us all (especially with regards to abortion). You can see them grapple with deeply personal issues. It's fascinating (and sometimes even witty) to read the chronology of court cases before, including and after Roe v Wade. You can clearly see how abortion law has evolved.

The book definitely has a pro-choice slant, so if you're expecting a pro-life diatribe, this isn't your book. The language is clear and easy to read without the kind of legal mumbo-jumbo we're used to hearing in movies. This has been an enriching read, one that makes me feel profoundly human, fallible, and American.

Eagles: One man's 12-year effort to capture on film the parenting cycle of our national symbol yields on impressive collection of rare and exciting photographs.

A Tale of Three Towns: In this state with at least three distinct cultures, three geographic regions, and a multitrack economy, there's no such thing as a typical Arizona small town. Lawrence W. Cheek visits St. David; Chinle; and Lake Havasu City.

Polo, Sport of Princes and Cowboys: At its best, it is much less a brawl than a ballet, choreographed for skilled riders and highly trained horses hurtling along at speeds up to 35 miles an hour.

Bear Fever: What started out as a quiet weekend of angling in Arizona's north country came to an abrupt halt when a determined bruin with a fondness for fresh fish stumbled onto the scene. By Chris Negri.

This inexpensive softcover guide is nicely printed and contains an excellent selection of 256 masterpieces from the AIC. The color reproductions are quite good for a book this modestly sized. Each entry is accompanied by a generous amount of illuminating text. All in all, it's perfect for your next visit to the AIC, or simply for home browsing.

More good stuff by May
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-12
I have read two other books by Rollo May, Addiction and Grace and The Springs of Creative Living (not an easy book to find though). May is the best author I've found so far that helps me spiritually. The only book that compares is "The People of the Lie" by Scott Peck. I am a new reader though, so I'm still searching. I find this book spiritually nourishing. It helps me live my life better by applying some of his principles. May keeps pointing out that I'm the problem and not others. How can I keep improving myself? May doesn't write fluff. He's to the point and practical. I'd recommend any of the three May books I've mentioned. They are all equally enjoyable.

Exceeded my expectations

I really liked this book. It felt groundbreaking to me, in terms of spiritual/religious literature and insight. I hadn't known quite what to expect as I began it. The author blended experiences and stories from his own life, with scriptural passages (which he seemed to always have at the ready,) as he expressed his own philosophical and theological insights. It almost felt like a conversation--with a very bright, engaging Christian man--in my living room, rather than reading a book.
I HIGHLY recommend it.

These are the tests or assessments for those who are using the Home Education Curriculum put out by the samae publisher. Since the Home Education Curriculum doesn't seem to be put out, these assessments are going away. This is unfortunate.

These books are divided into a two page spread every two weeks. Each two pages covers English, math, Social Studies and/or science and a variety of other topics. They are supposed to be used as a review or test to ensure your child has maintained and learned what he or she has been taught during the week.

I have used them with my children to ensure we are staying on task and that they are learning about what they need to be each year. It helps make sure that no topic 'slips through the cracks'. And it ensures that we are about on target with public schools.

My kids love doing these books.

The city of lahhh... in all the great "moments."

Review Date: 2006-05-27
This is a stunning work by a great -- ignored and/or undiscovered -- old school writing talent; who truly was the voice for the city of Los Angeles.

"Cleve Hermann at Large in LA," that was the title of his feature commentary on KFWB and also the title of this book. It was indeed old school, great-school, timeless-school.

The native Los Angelino was beyond "kind of wow," he was beyond "kind of now," he truly was "Charlie."

I often think of his great lyrics in the song, "The Men That My Mother Brought Home."

Why is it I can not cry;
no matter how far I may atone,
the way I was born,
and the way I that scorned
the men that my mother bought home.

The city never atoned for him or the way he was born, and he's gone now. But Cleve Hermann was a writing genius, an ignored and/or undiscovered genius, but a genius who will soon be discovered again.

Nobody got LA like he did.

God how I miss him. I was privileged to read his stuff, I wish I could read more than his first and last work.

Enough said.

Invaluable radiographic reference!
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-19
Although the title of this book sounds extremely dry, unapproachable, and cumbersome, this book is a well-organized compilation of every type of unusual looking radiograph for every part of the human body. In my job as an Army physical therapist, I commonly have to screen plain radiographs. This reference has been invaluable to myself and others that work in my clinic, especially when evaluating foot and ankle films. There are several (more than a dozen) accessory bones that may be present, and these are all very well mapped out, each with a radiographic example, explanation, and key points to consider when evaluating each specific view. Excellent reference text!!
