Suffering and Perplexed?

I've read this book through twice already and every time have been amazed at the wise and discerning way the very difficult book of Job has been explained by its young author. The book has helped to strengthen and restore my faith in the Lord and made me look beyond my circumstances. This book will make your realize, as it did me, that the all important question when besieged with suffering on all sides is to ask Who and not Why.

The author's style is also very riveting and humorous in many places. I loved the nick-names he gives to Job's "so called" friends - Eliphaz the Exterminator, Bildad the Brutal and Zophar the Zealot. You'll find yourself chuckling despite your grief or through your tears. From this book you will also learn what not to say to the suffering and how you can be a means of encouragement instead of a means of further despair. This is a book I would love to present to every suffering Christian of whatever age. And keep it handy at all times on your shelf for your own private profit. You will find yourself reaching out to it again and again.

I appreciated the insight that the author brought to Job's life. I am a seminary student and am preaching a Narrative sermon on Job 1 and 2. This book provided me with a wealth of insightful material, illustrations and wonderful exegetical points in clear, simple language. Thank you for your faithfulness to the text and leading by the Holy Spirit!

Any Portland, Oregon or Pacific Northwest sports fan will dig heavily into Schoneley's story. He's a great bridge between a time when major league sports was still a family operation and now. And it's more than just one man's story: It's a fascinating microcosm of the business in the second half of the century.

This book is a great history lesson not just of baseball but of the times Willie played. There are many memories of the "Giants" of yesterday.

a magical book about a truly great baseball player

"Willie's Time," by Charles Einstein, is a magical read, in my opinion. Einstein basically starts when Willie made it to the "Bigs," and he weaves history into the phenomenal career of Willie Mays, who is arguably the greatest baseball player that ever lived.

I started playing Little League baseball in 1960, and I played center. Willie Mays was my hero. Mays could-and did-do it all: (1)hit for average, (2)hit with power, (3)run the bases, (4)play defense, and (5)win games for his team with intangibles. Many players challenged Willie's arm, and Mays threw the majority of them out.

To attempt to compare drug-enhanced players of today with Willie Mays is ludicrous. They are mere children compared to Willie.

Today (27 May 2005), Major League Baseball no longer exists (to me). But "Willie's Time" was a wonderful reminder of not only a great baseball player, but also a time when Major League Baseball was fun. (RIP, Major League Baseball.)

In my opinion, you will NOT be disappointed if you buy this book.

Excellent Pick-Me-Ups!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-24
This little book is the perfect companion to keep on your desk, in your briefcase or anywhere you can reach for it when you need some solid pick-me-ups. It is based on Carl Mays' larger, hardcover book, A STRATEGY FOR WINNING. Each page of WINNING THOUGHTS is complete within itself, containing its own "thought". For example, one page reads, "Be creative. Take an idea, an object, a group of people, a method, a problem - something that's been around for a while - stand back and look at it with a new perspective (a fresh pair of eyes). Give it a different twist. Do a common thing uncommonly well."

Another page reads, "Don't wait. Most people develop feelings because of happenings; winners develop happenings as a result of feelings. Believe that you can make a positive difference. Work to make it happen. Losers find ways to lose while winners find ways to win!"

WINNING THOUGHTS contains practical, uplifting comfort food for the soul!

This is a book you cannot put down. I have read all of Barbara Elliott-Carpenter's books in the Starlight Trilogy and she just keeps getting better and better. I am saving all the books for my granddaughter. I appreciate the fact that the author's books are the type that I can share with my granddaughter. The books give such a vivid description of life I felt like I was there.

Finding yourself is the greatest endeavor in life. Sometimes it takes great challenges or tragedies to help us to look within. Sometimes we get there through laughter and love. Mostly, it takes a lot of everything, ups and downs, to understand ourselves. In Barbara Elliott Carpenter's novel, "Wish I May, Wish I Might..." readers witness one girl's journey to inner self.

In 1954, Sissy Bannister moves from the place she knew as home in Illinois, to West Virginia. At 14, she isn't happy about leaving behind her world, but she soon finds a brand new one waiting to be explored. Making new friends is just the beginning. Sissy experiences differences in beliefs and attitudes in the people around her and begins to learn what she believes in herself. Desegregation, varying religious beliefs, and class relationships are all part of her lesson plan. Dealing with family trials and tribulations isn't easy either and Sissy learns how important family bonds are, many times over. A schizophrenic uncle, an almost missing sister, and the stories of her parents' lives are woven into her soul's fibers. Her friendships, with other teens and with other adults bring more chances to learn about life, and herself. As the years pass, Sissy grows into a young woman she can be proud of, holding on to her fiery youth but also embracing the heart-touching moments of her life.

Barbara Elliott Carpenter leads readers on a journey of small town America, coal mines, colorful characters, romance and fun, heartbreak and tragedy. "Wish I May, Wish I Might" evokes varying emotions, reaching out through vignettes of life that have a homey familiarity. Sissy is so real she leaps off the pages and into your heart. Watching her come into her own was a pleasure. Carpenter offers a memorable and enjoyable read. I laughed, and I cried, and I loved every minute of it. Well done!

I had the privilege to meet Maria Baker, the author, herself at a convention about 10 years ago. She wrote this cookbook with much thought and from the point of view of someone who loves to cook, and it shows. The recipes are clear and easy to understand, and most of the ingredients are common and easy to find. She includes common equivalents and explanations for herbs and spices. You can tell this was written by someone who LOVES to cook! This little gem is wonderful addition to my bookshelf!

A Hearty Slice of Suburban Americana
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-19
Jan C. Snow has done it. She has captured Midwestern humor without sounding hokey, domestic humor without sounding whiney, and American humor without sounding bitter. A bit like Garrison Keillor, Erma Bombeck, and Will Rogers rolled into one. Tackling topics like junk, pocket lint, Easter eggs, and toothpaste, Snow's wry and witty comments are amusing, nostalgic, and even bittersweet. She really shines when talking about holidays, those paradigms of American psychosis and over-exuberance. "The 12 Months of Christmas" is one of the funniest works I've read about the December season. Snow's humor comes from her keen observations of the paradoxical and often bizarre goings-on of everyday suburban life, things that you wouldn't think of off hand, but once mentioned, they become obvious and rather odd. All in all, Snow's collection of essays is well written, engaging, and funny. It is a book that I turn to again and again when I need a good laugh.

This book rules!!!

Ms. Snow has captured the essence of Ohio humor. We are fortunate to live in a time when such brilliance is displayed. Sardonic, sarcastic, cutting edge all rolled into nifty compartments.
