Oxford Bible AtlasReview Date: 2001-03-26
The book is divided into three sections, the first introducing the ancient world, then the several maps, and concluding with an archaeological overview. Part one blends seemingly incompatible topics of biblical and geologic history. It includes biblical and secular accounts of ancient history. The atlas does not attempt to expound too greatly on the "Holy Land" as being somehow superior in importance. In fact the Holy Land occupies an important crossroads between east and west more so than it stands as a regional religious center of its own merit. Those who held power such as David, Herod, or even Pontius Pilate were rarely more than a regional or even local rulers who paled in stature when compared to Alexander or any of the Roman Emperors.
The map section covers most of the primary locations mentioned in the Bible, and illustrates the vastness of the biblical lands. Many maps retain ancient place names, though the primary focus is on the Near East. There are some areas not covered, such as the city of Tarshish, Jonah's destination when he attempted to flee from his responsibilities, and the route of the Exodus does not take them across either the Red Sea, or either the modern Gulf of Suez or Gulf of Aqaba. But these apparent omissions do little to detract from the overall effectiveness of the maps.
The final section is akin to a primer on biblical archaeology. It introduces Carbon 14 dating, how a site is developed, and a brief history of archaeological efforts in the region. It shows how cultures are understood by what has survived through the ages, and helps fill gaps when written records are not available.
The end result is a very informative atlas that readers of many different backgrounds will appreciate.

Picasso & American Art - great show, great catalog!Review Date: 2007-02-08
A catalogue better than the exhibition it illustratesReview Date: 2007-04-03
Now what remains of it is this beautiful book, very well documented and which shows us some works of rarely seen artists alongside others, much more famous ones. The text is lively and informative.

highly recommended for lovers of poetry and art.....Review Date: 2008-06-08
The very simplicity of Kimmelman's poems is reminiscent of ancient Haiku masters. "Afternoon Haze" transports readers to this quiet moment in time:
Sky a single color --
and below, the trees thick
across water and sun --
shoots of bramble springing
up against the mud shore.
Kimmelman doesn't need a surfeit of words to share his peaceful moments. "Morning Pond" calms and soothes in three lines:
Circles in
the still shine --
wings overhead.
Existing around us, everywhere, are primordial miracles. All we have to do is look and we will find "Something" to awe and inspire us:
The slate rock takes in sunlight
in an endless darkness but
for a white cut line across
its base. Something will grow there.
Hummingbirds, swans, sparrows, geese, and egrets co-exist here with humans and trees, sunshine and stars, storms and squalls. Each variation of light and shadow impacts the Cape May existence. Caruso and Kimmelman have captured this experience beautifully in word and watercolor. For lovers of poetry and art, this book is highly recommended.

Professional respect by journalistsReview Date: 2006-01-26
The April 3, 2005 front pages from newspapers around the globe are assembled here to announce the death of John Paul II. A student of journalism will notice a few patterns. First there is the front page from Krakow, Poland that just has a large photo and two words: 'Totus tuus' (p. 131). Some newpapers, such as the Plain Dealer in Cleveland, went with a large photo and a story (p. 64). Other newpaper editors chose to have a photo and text of the Pope fill 2/3 of the front page and placed unrelated stories at the bottom (Cincinnati, p. 62). Lastly, some editors allowed a small photo and small a story of the Pope to fill a tiny portion of the front page and filled the rest of the page with ads and other stories which seems distracting (New Delhi, India, p. 117).
The "Collection" proves that the majority editors chose to annnounce the death of the Pope in powerful, professional and sometimes artistic ways. The painting from the Register in Des Moines, Iowa (p. 31) alone makes the book worth its price.
