Oxford Bible Atlas
Helpful Votes: 85 out of 86 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-26
The Oxford Bible Atlas, edited by Herbert G. May, is a detailed, extremely useful book that will heighten anyone's general understanding of biblical geography. It contains more than maps as it delves into the history behind the maps, and the archaeology behind the history. It cites biblical sources but also cites apocryphal books unfamiliar to most Protestant readers. The end result is a colorful, informative work that helps place both Old and New testaments into perspective.

The book is divided into three sections, the first introducing the ancient world, then the several maps, and concluding with an archaeological overview. Part one blends seemingly incompatible topics of biblical and geologic history. It includes biblical and secular accounts of ancient history. The atlas does not attempt to expound too greatly on the "Holy Land" as being somehow superior in importance. In fact the Holy Land occupies an important crossroads between east and west more so than it stands as a regional religious center of its own merit. Those who held power such as David, Herod, or even Pontius Pilate were rarely more than a regional or even local rulers who paled in stature when compared to Alexander or any of the Roman Emperors.

The map section covers most of the primary locations mentioned in the Bible, and illustrates the vastness of the biblical lands. Many maps retain ancient place names, though the primary focus is on the Near East. There are some areas not covered, such as the city of Tarshish, Jonah's destination when he attempted to flee from his responsibilities, and the route of the Exodus does not take them across either the Red Sea, or either the modern Gulf of Suez or Gulf of Aqaba. But these apparent omissions do little to detract from the overall effectiveness of the maps.

The final section is akin to a primer on biblical archaeology. It introduces Carbon 14 dating, how a site is developed, and a brief history of archaeological efforts in the region. It shows how cultures are understood by what has survived through the ages, and helps fill gaps when written records are not available.

The end result is a very informative atlas that readers of many different backgrounds will appreciate.

Excellent for Divorce Recovery

Loneliness can be devastating until you realize how to use it to your advantage. This book will help keep divorcees from "rebounding" and jumping into another bad relationship. Be aware that it is written from a Christian perspective; I've given it to a lot of friends who are going through a divorce.

Speaking honestly from a sensitive as well as sympathetic heart, Elisabeth Elliot candidly offers her reader a Light at the end of their tunnel. She touches on every circumstance in life that brings us to loneliness and then points us directly to the One who can ultimately and completely fill that void. I love especially the way she brings in her own struggles and experiences. This book reads quickly and is suitable for anyone who may struggle with loneliness. It gave me hope and a renewed confirmation in God's presence and how He works everything, even the bad things, in life for good.

Good Overview

Review Date: 2008-02-21
This book was a good overview of equine photography. I am an intermediate photographer with moderate horse knowledge. It was easy to understand and implement - even with my lower level skills. The pictures in the book were amazing! Most of the book covered photography, but the video part was very informative and simple to understand. I would definitely recommend this book if you are going to photograph or video horses even just for fun.

Great information in this book

I am a fairly experienced photographer who has recently taken up horse show photography. I found this book very, very helpful--especially the sections on the particular phase of each gait which will result in the best photo. I purchased this and Lesli Groves' book, and found them to compliment each other--but if I could only buy one, it would be this one. Specifically, the 'troubleshooting' and 'planning the perfect shot' chapters are excellent; I am equally enthusiastic about the chapters he on computers, printers, and paper. The examples clearly explain the text. I learned a lot from this book, and my first photo practice session showed a significant improvement in my work.

Picasso & American Art - great show, great catalog!

The exhibition was a great survey of the influence that Picasso (and cubist art in general) had on American painters in the early/mid 20th century. A wealth of good reproductions, reproducing many unseen masterpieces.

A catalogue better than the exhibition it illustrates

Review Date: 2007-04-03
The exhibition "Picasso and American Art" was very much criticized because of its tendency to mixing everything that counts in modern American art (or rather, in New York art) and linking it somewhat arbitrarily to Picasso, which, in a way, is stating the obvious.

Now what remains of it is this beautiful book, very well documented and which shows us some works of rarely seen artists alongside others, much more famous ones. The text is lively and informative.

A friend asked me to order the book for him. He collects that series of books. He was in New York City, the beginning of November 2007, and was unable to find the book in the stores he went to check. He told me he was very happy with the book, and also the cost. $23.00 versus $35.00 in the bookstores. He highly recommends the yearbook.

highly recommended for lovers of poetry and art.....

Review Date: 2008-06-08
Fred Caruso and Burt Kimmelman are two friends who vacation with their families at Cape May Point. Their collaboration on this book, whether it was their intent or not, is a visual and poetic gift to the world. Through his skill with words, Kimmelman blesses readers with tranquil moments, soothing visions, quiet wonders. Caruso's impressionistic whispers speak of wind, grass, trees, water, and sky. Together, they've created a placid oasis where readers can escape the chaos of our modern world.

The very simplicity of Kimmelman's poems is reminiscent of ancient Haiku masters. "Afternoon Haze" transports readers to this quiet moment in time:

Sky a single color --
and below, the trees thick

across water and sun --

shoots of bramble springing
up against the mud shore.

Kimmelman doesn't need a surfeit of words to share his peaceful moments. "Morning Pond" calms and soothes in three lines:

Circles in
the still shine --
wings overhead.

Existing around us, everywhere, are primordial miracles. All we have to do is look and we will find "Something" to awe and inspire us:

The slate rock takes in sunlight
in an endless darkness but
for a white cut line across
its base. Something will grow there.

Hummingbirds, swans, sparrows, geese, and egrets co-exist here with humans and trees, sunshine and stars, storms and squalls. Each variation of light and shadow impacts the Cape May existence. Caruso and Kimmelman have captured this experience beautifully in word and watercolor. For lovers of poetry and art, this book is highly recommended.

Kimmelman and Caruso together have wrought a lyrical splendor. Kimmelman's deft poems - their lightness, their space, their languid-ness - beautifully match Caruso's evocative watercolors. A joy to read and a joy to behold. They have created a gift for the world.

Professional respect by journalists
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-26
Mr. Bill Mitchell and his peers at the Poynter Institute in Florida have created a carefully designed, expertly formatted and cleanly printed book that enables the reader to grieve the loss of "a man whose impact stretched far past the walls of Vatican City" (p. x).

The April 3, 2005 front pages from newspapers around the globe are assembled here to announce the death of John Paul II. A student of journalism will notice a few patterns. First there is the front page from Krakow, Poland that just has a large photo and two words: 'Totus tuus' (p. 131). Some newpapers, such as the Plain Dealer in Cleveland, went with a large photo and a story (p. 64). Other newpaper editors chose to have a photo and text of the Pope fill 2/3 of the front page and placed unrelated stories at the bottom (Cincinnati, p. 62). Lastly, some editors allowed a small photo and small a story of the Pope to fill a tiny portion of the front page and filled the rest of the page with ads and other stories which seems distracting (New Delhi, India, p. 117).

The "Collection" proves that the majority editors chose to annnounce the death of the Pope in powerful, professional and sometimes artistic ways. The painting from the Register in Des Moines, Iowa (p. 31) alone makes the book worth its price.

Best overall tribute ever!

It's incredible to witness all headlines all over the world, how Pope John Paul II trascended language and geographical frontiers to be remembered as the loving "father" of the catholic church. Interesting enough, many of the headlines are from jewish, hindu, and other religion newspapers. For all people who have feelings about the death of the Pope, this is an extraordinary book.

Without entering religious fields, this graphical records from the Poynter Institute encompass important publications from all over the world, that why I called it "overall tribute"

Pray Together Now offers an excellent guide to finding a prayer group or prayer resourse. There is something for everyone here. As a Born Again Christian, I especially appreciate the vast Christian resouces made available. People of all faiths will appreciate the research in their area. The author has lovingly embraced the very core of what prayer is about; touching the heart of God.

This book is both practical and profound.

We are currently in the midst of a revival of interest in prayer and healing. This interest includes healing for psychological, physical and emotional problems. There are many fine books in the field but no one has combined the theoretical with the practical like Cay Randall-May. Rev. May who has been helped innumerable times by prayer, outlines the history of prayer, the importance of group prayer and how to find and/or start a prayer group. She has the most exhausitve list of already existing prayer organizations as well as detailed instructions to forming your own prayer group. This book is an invaluable resource to anyone who might ever need help from the higher power. With the increasing evidence on the efficacy of prayer, this includes most thinking people. Buy it!
