Rice makes reading an ethnography a pleasure. All ethnomusicologists seeking to undertake their own writing project ought to read this book first. His accounts about studying with Kostadin make you feel like you were there learning the gaida, too. Rice's model makes a good case for learning an instrument while conducting fieldwork. Particulary insightful is the author's interpretation of the emic/etic distinction as it relates to the ethnomusicologist.

If you have the slightest interest in music, Eastern Europe in transition, and intellectual thought, then you owe it to yourself to read this book. Proper obeisance is made to the academic gods - Ricoeur, Clifford, Bourdieu, Geertz, Gadamer and the rest - and the references are sincere and thoughtful. But most of all you will be enthralled by Rice's personal account of his discovery of Bulgarian music, and of the lives of a wonderful couple who perform that music and became not just his 'informants' but his friends, indeed his family. The book is personal, revelatory, and stimulating. If only all musical scholarship were this good!

"May Maisey Moo's Cowllection of Moo Tales" is such a wonderful story. It entertains the reader! In addition, it speaks to us about overcoming our differences and uniting in friendship and cooperation to reach a common goal. As a New Jersey elementary school Teacher of Reading, I am constantly searching for literature that not only an "avid reader" can explore but the "reluctant reader" as well. "May Maisey Moo" fits both categories! Students as well as parents will love the richness of the language, especially the cleverness of the "moo-words". For instance, May Maisey Moo and her cow friends dance in a "cow-ga line" to "moo-sic." The illustrations draw you into them; you will actually find yourself studying the features given to each whimsical cow drawing. Both educators and those interested in the uniqueness of our nations dairylands, will find this "tail" a delightful one. Children will love it and so will you.

May O'Donnell: Modern Dance Pioneer is a biography of May O'Donnell (1906-2004), one of the Martha Graham Contemporary Dance Company's most successful soloists during its early days. O'Donnell's skill, self-confidence, and choreography technique enabled her to create her own roles in such well-known Graham works as "Appalachian Spring" and "Herodidade". She was the first American to create dances of musical abstraction, a prestigious teacher, and had an eventful sixty-year career. This true-life story of O'Donnell's extraordinary accomplishments is supplemented with black-and-white photographs, as well as the first available intermediate-class syllabus of O'Donnell's technique. An eye-opening look into dance through the decades and the life story of a talented professional.

Never Surrender! The Anecdote That Defined May

Review Date: 2005-10-19
When the late, great May Sarton was still with us...perhaps we had a treasure many took for granted. Here was a warrior woman from the early 20th century and throughout its many generations-of-changes, who made up her mind to go-it-alone as a literary artist helping to define for millions of people world-wide - what it means to be truly courageous and never surrender. We waited for each extraordinarily unique new journal to help us make it day to day. Not like many junk journals today but a true artistic genre ("Journal of a Solitude") in the tradition of the great Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, and Dorothy Wordsworth. While critics disagreed as to the merit of her poetry, and novels, the people loved them - and like the spectacular Opera singer Andrea Bocelli - one cannot argue with demand that exceeds supply on a scale that skews the formulas and confounds the brains of bean counters everywhere. I, for one, hope and pray that May Sarton's incredible body of work will never be forgotten, and this astonishingly gorgeous book is a testament to her life and work and will stand as a great work of art to either start or end...in remembering that it is always worth the price to be valiant, true, passsionate and NEVER SURRENDER!

The subjects are covered in a direct, goal oriented manner. This book will tell you the precise facts and points needed to pass your ABIM exam. Best of all, is the way letters are printed, good size, good space, it won't tire you when you read it.
It is not a textbook, but a rapid resource of review, needs to be complemented with other books on IM.
Good set of questions similar in format to those on ABIM exam

If you are taking the ABIM certification or recertification exam, or you are just reviewing internal medicine, this is the definitive review book to get. It is concise, organized and very well written by the Mayo Clinic authors. I have personally gone to the course twice in Rochester, Minnesota. There were other attendees who have made it an annual pilgrimage. There are review questions and answers after the end of every chapter. There are pearls in every page that you can use in daily medicine practice. I give this book 5 stars, the highest rating.

This is a book about the magickal use of the Medicine Wheel, or Circle Magick as it's sometimes called. It is centered not only on the common type of Medicine Wheel--the one we make and hang up--but also on creating a ceremonial space using a medicine wheel circle. In addition to the clear and easy-to-follow information, the authors have included a packet of Medicine Wheel cards with every book. It's a must-have for every magickal library

Medicine Wheel Ceramonies is a great introduction to the ancient Medicine Wheel Circle. The authors have done their homework here, and I was able to set up and execute my own circle very quickly while maintaining an understanding and appreciation for the traditional Medicine Circle. I immediatly felt the effects of this powerful medium. I use it weekly, and have expanded it to include family members. It is truly good medicine. The energy that that one can use for good is really powerful, and I recommend it to all those who wish to bring good medicine to their own lives, and this world in general.

Memoirs Of A Psychic Spy: The Remarkable Life Of U.S. Government Remote Viewer 001 tells of the first military recruit for the government to use his abilities as a 'psychic spy' during the Cold War and beyond, following nearly twenty years of psychic spying and reissuing the classic 2002 title The Stargate Chronicles in paper. His predictions and observations were startlingly accurate and his intelligence-gathering results included pinpointing the underground facility used to store Soviet missiles during the Cold War. While the Stargate project was shut down and labeled a failure, it's interesting to note that forty percent of its documents are still classified.

This is the only book in my son's collection that he allows me to read each word on every page. The pages are illustrated with bright colors and cleverly drawn characters, the text rhymes and it offers a quasi-question and answer format. I read the questions, "Mommy may I..." and my son gleefully answers, "No! No! No!" or "Yes! Yes! Yes!" when it's time to answer. The questions presented in the book center around events that happen in or around your home (playing with the fish, helping bake, crossing the street alone, playing outside, etc.) and Mommy's answers clearly explain why the child may or may not do as requested. This is a delightful book with a subtle attempt to keep your child safe.

One of the Very Best Regimental Histories Written

Review Date: 2008-03-14
Mother, May You Never See the Sights I Have Seen covers the relatively short but extremely brutal service of the Fifty-Seventh Massachusetts Veteran Volunteers from initial recruitment in the fall of 1863, through Grant's Overland Campaign, and on to the trenches surrounding Petersburg, Virginia. Of the 900+ members who started with the regiment when it left Worcester, Massachusetts, in early spring 1864, only ten men made it through the last year of the war unscathed. The regiment was one of Fox's famous "300 fighting regiments", having lost 19.1% killed or mortally wounded. Wilkinson disputes this figure, and his calculations raise the total to 20.5% of the total killed or mortally wounded. Regardless of the exact numbers, this regiment suffered appalling casualties in a short amount of time. This story is dramatic enough in the hands of a pedestrian writer. Wilkinson, however, kept me interested sentence by sentence, page by page through 371 total pages of text. Wilkinson describes the experiences of these men, both the good and the bad, in great detail. He doesn't fall prey to idolizing his subject matter. A reader learns that these were men with human failings, but that some were able to rise above these failings to fight resolutely for their cause. The roster located just after the text is amazing as well. Even privates receive quite a lot of attention. The roster runs from page 403 to page 623, and is a valuable reference for genealogists and other researchers. Wilkinson is not finished there, however. His appendices relate even more useful information on the regiment in easily read tables. The first appendix shows regimental strengths and casualties broken down by company for all of the major engagements of the 57th Massachusetts. Wargamers in particular will be interested in this material. If every author of a unit history included this information in as detailed a manner as Wilkinson did, there would be no need for unit strength research in the National Archives. The last two appendices cover statistical summaries of the men in the regiment, and a list of the ten who made it through the war without getting killed or wounded.
In conclusion, I am very glad I picked this particular volume to start seriously reading unit histories. To everyone who recommended that I read the book, I thank you. I truly believe this book would appeal to a wide range of readers, even those who are not necessarily Civil War "buffs". In the same way Glory is an excellent, far-reaching film, Mother, May You Never See The Sights I Have Seen has the ability to reach out to a larger audience. I plan to recommend this book to those that ask me why I'm so interested in the Civil War. It hooks you and doesn't let go, much like a well-written novel. Although I've read only a couple of unit histories, I get the feeling that few I read in the future will be as good as this one. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

This is a comprehensive and authoritative regimental history, and really sets the standard for this genre. What I like most about it, since I research Canadians who served in the Civil War, was the detailed regimental roster that the authors compiled. Unfortunately, this book is out of print and may be difficult and/or costly to track down, but should you get your hands on a copy, you will not be disappointed.

Mujercitas really made me wonder about the opportunity we all have to live a life full of joy. Made me also wonder how come most of us do not apprecite and value this opportunity given. With this book I have decided that I will, even if others don't, that's up to them. In addition, made me think about the family I once had and with a little more forgiveness, It could return to me. Read the book, if you are into the sentimental type, but if you are Stone-Cold don't waste your time!!!.
