There IS a Movie Version!!

There is a movie of this real life event.

"Quattro giornate di Napoli" was made in 1962

Getting a copy of it however is the hard part. It does occasionally play on Turner Classic Movies which is how I knew that there was a film version.

FYI!

Terrific action/coming-of-age for young kids in WWII

I first read this book many years ago as a child and fell in love with it's inspirational young characters. It trully is a terrific story of what one man can do regardless of size or age. Four Days of Napels is a true story of four boys, ages 18, 17, 13 and 12 years old who defeat the German Army in Naples in only four days. Afterwards, and for their incredible courage, each boy was awarded the Italian equivalent of the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor, the Medaglia d'Oro. You can't beat this story for action, drama, and spirit. It's great to finaly have these cassettes available as the book has been out of print for many years. Now, if only someone would turn this incredible story into a movie for all the kids of today, what a childhood dream come true it would be.

The Flower and Fairy Alphabet Coloring Book by Darcy May is a very neat, interesting, fun-filled, and educational book. It can be enjoyed by gardeners, children who like to color, and other people just looking for a good way to spend their free time. I originally bought the coloring book for my seven year old daughter, but it turned out my teenagers (ages fourteen and seventeen) enjoyed it just as much, if not more. After I found out how much fun the Flower and Fairy Alphabet Coloring Book was, I got back on Amazon.com and ordered more for me and for gifts. The pictures in the coloring book are very intricate and well drawn. Therefore, it's lots of fun to color, but also may take some time. Overall, this low priced book is lots of fun and will provide a good time for people of all ages.

I read Garland for Girls last summer for the first time, once again enjoying another one of LMA's books! Each chapter is a different story, filled with good old-fashioned piety and lovely story lines so absent from modern books for girls. As a young adult, as well as a teacher and mentor of young girls, I highly recommend LMA's Garland for Girls.

I read this book as a child in the 1970s. It was one of my favorites...Then, a few months ago I saw an old copy at a flea market and couldn't resist looking for a better copy. I highly recommend it; even though it was written in 1965 the setting is still neutral enough for todays kids...this is a good book for a child you're trying to get interested in reading.

My husband and I both remember reading this book as children. Many a time, we have sat around campfires with our children trying to retell this story from our memories. We have searched many libraries, but never found this book. Now we can read this wonderful tale to them.

What is really unique about this book is that the Psychic Medium author describes what he felt when he encountered the ghosts of Cape May. Not being especially psychic, I have always been curious about what psychic ghost investigators feel when they encounter the paranormal. If you are interested in ghost investigations, I really recommend that you read this book and I am looking forward to Ghosts Of Cape May, part 2, due out next spring.

The Ghosts of Cape May is SPOOKTACULAR!

If you are someone who gravitates to tv programs, movies or books about ghosts, you are going to LOVE this book. It is filled from cover to cover with indepth stories about the ghosts that haunt the hotels, b&b's, and restaurants of Cape May, New Jersey. Craig McManus - who truly is the unofficial Mayor of the spirit world of Cape May, New Jersey - has written this book from his own first-hand experiences with the ghosts of Cape May. Craig has had a lifelong fascination with ghosts. This fascination has inspired him to use his truly amazing psychic mediumship abilities to communicate with people from the "other side". As Craig shares in his book, Cape May is a paranomal hotspot and this may be due to this adorable community being surrounded on three sides by water. The water connection supplies an abundant energy force field that enables ghosts to freely travel into our reality from the spiritual world. Vacationers planning a trip to Cape May, NJ should treat themselves to this book prior to their visit. It opens up a whole new dimension of experience for Cape May visitors. Plus, it's a must-read for all ghost story, ghost-hunter enthusiasts.

Delightful and elegant coffee table book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-12
This is a delightful and elegant coffee table book for glass artists and enthusiasts. Its small size makes it a versatile accent piece that can be used almost anywhere and the spiral binding makes in easy to leaf through.

The book starts out with an overview of glass including history and a summary of how various types of glass are made. A variety of glass decoration techniques are then explained including glazing, painting, staining, sandblasting, acid etching, fusing, slumping, casting and bonding. These are not intended as instruction, rather as a general guide to glassmaking methodology.

A beautiful and varied showcase of over 30 pieces of glass artwork follows. Each piece is displayed by itself on a single page. On the opposite page, along with the artwork title, size and date completed, there is background information on and a quote from the artist.

There is a great glossary, index and list of artists with contact information. This book is fascinating for casual browsing and will inspire any glassmaker for years to come.

this book is beautifully bound. contains bright colorful photography and a quick narrative on different techniques of art glass. it doesn't go into blowing very much, but it does provide some examples on techniques that may not be know as widely to the layman. it's not a how-to on the techniques, but more of a catalog on them. i got it as a gift and i really love it.

Good basic overview of dolphins!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-08
I was lucky enough to stumble across this book at a book sale in Colorado. It's a great introduction to learning about dolphins and similar cetaceans. There is even a helpful taxonomic chart in the appendix. The book is split into 3 basic sections - 'The Nature of Dolphins', species information, and human impacts on dolphins. You would assume from the "Greenpeace" title that the book would be full of subjective descriptions, but surprisingly they stick to just the biological facts during the first 2 sections of the book. That makes it a great choice as a beginning cetacean biology book for anyone.
The first section teaches about Cetacean evolution, dolphin anatomy (including an anatomy diagram), behavior, echolocation, intelligence/communication, and similar dolphin basics. It also dispels and discusses the real facts about some of the popular romantic myths about their intelligence and social behavior.
The second section gives details about each of the species within the Delphinidae family (dolphins, porpoises, and killer whales) worldwide. Like a field guide, it is split up into different categories based on habitat location. For example, all arctic species are presented in one section, all coastal species are in another section, etc. At least one color picture or sketch is given for each species, along with size and color description, habitat description, and a few paragraphs about what makes that species unique. I found this section of the book the most helpful.
The third section of the book covers the impact that humans have had on dolphins. This is the only section with obvious bias and subjective wording. The book was published in 1990, so a couple of the facts may be a little outdated now, but still helpful to know. Most of the human practices mentioned are still going on and thus still relevant. Some of the pictures in this section are very graphic and might disturb children or adults. This section of the book covers hunting practices around the world, secondary dolphin mortality caused by the fishing industry, U.S. and Soviet military use of dolphins, captivity for entertainment purposes (such as Sea World), and finishes with descriptions of dolphin conservation projects worldwide by Greenpeace and scientists.

I am in the process of considering a career in marine biology, and found this book helpful as a beginning point on my quest to learn about dolphins. The wording is easy to understand, so I think even people with just a casual interest in cetaceans would learn a lot from it. If you can find it, I recommend buying this book for a good overview of dolphins/toothed whales.

A thorough appraisal of this popular mammal.

As anyone might expect from the Greenpeace stable, the emphasis here is on conservation - and so it should be! Commencing with a chapter headed "What is a Dolphin?", I cannot think of a better way to start any book on any factual subject than by describing precisely what that subject is. So, having left the reader in no doubt as to what this book is all about, we then go from strength to strength as it describes the creature's; Evolution, Family Tree, Anatomy, Behaviour, Swimming, Relations, Intelligence, Echolocation and instances of Stranding. And that's just from part one entitled "The Nature of Dolphins."

From this point onwards, the reader benefits from having just received a great education into these endearing mammals. It is, therefore, with a greater understanding of the creatures in general that we now move on to learn about, All Ocean Species, Artic Species and Northern Ocean Species. It is here we encounter the Pakistan and Yangtze River Dolphins and the even rarer Vaquita from Mexico (to mention but three). Along the way we are taught of man's threat - both deliberate and accidental, and that threat is quite disturbing.

Altogether, this is a book packed with information supported by outstanding colour photography and diagrams. It is a book which brings home a message loud and clear and is one that should be read by anyone who has ever been thrilled by the sight of Dolphin.

Anthro-political linguistic study of code-switching.

Zentella is an anthro-political linguist describing language use in a New York Puerto Rican neighborhood. She uses rich description and interview transcripts to illustrate the issues surrounding the use of English, Spanish, and "Spanglish" in a group of informants spanning two generations. This book focuses equally well on the anthropological, the political/social, and the linguistic aspects of language use and the decisions the informants make regarding their language use. Growing Up Bilingual is an important book examining some of the complexities of linguistic code-switching in bilingual populations.

A sociolinguistic discussion on child bilingualism

Provides a comprehensive perspective on childhood bilingualism. It is a text for academics, teachers, administrators, sociolinguists, linguists, anthropologists and parents who are interested in learning about life with two languages in a small network within an urban environment.

The text is an excellent source and platform of research as it presents incisive data and colorful narratives of children's speech. Discussions on bilingualism at home and in the community, language loyalty, code-switching are among the many issues covered in the text. It is a must as we enter the millenium with a new perspective on multilingualism and language diversity in the U.S.A. or any part of the world.

Guts is the type of poetry book we have all been looking for. Ms. May, obviously trained in the classics, pushes past the boundary of formal verse to create her own voice. I thank May for branching out of the mire of self-absorbed confessionalism. Her poetry touches on the hidden truths and shames of society, including eating disorders, racism and subtle remarks on classism and a young woman's "place" in modern America. Congratulations to May, and to readers who pick up guts for finding this voice at the beginning of her career.

Memorably crafted verses explore a diversity of issues

Guts is Catherine May's debut collection showcasing her undeniable talents as a poetry. Her memorably crafted verses explore a diversity of issues ranging from gender and class to ethnicity and the human condition. SummerSong: Grandma's been dying for weeks and weeks./You can see drying eyes and she even speaks/with a tone in her voice that is close to dead./But she doesn't know it. She's out of her head/with dry skin and tumors and her Medicaid/and memories like movies of much better days./So she rests on the couch and complains of the cold,/says "A chill in the bones is the curse of the old,"/as her head slowly rocks in my shaky embrace,/only twitches of life still remain in her face.
