You Are Mine and If Only I Had a Green Nose (Wemmicks Collection)The kids love anything by Max Lucado who should be considered the "Nora Roberts" of the religous genre. Buy several and give as gifts to any child you know. They will love you for the gift.

From simple to more complicated, this book takes the reader into fine Mexican cooking. I enjoy reading it for the fun of it as well as for finding practical meals.

Fascinating reading, wonderful recipes.

If you think Mexican cooking is all refried beans and tacos, think again. This book will introduce you to the coastal cuisine of Veracruz, where Spanish, Caribbean, and Mediterranean influences all can be found. A long introduction to the region, cooking, and people of Veracruz precede the recipes, which include everything from appetizers and small plates to dessets, beverages, rice and of course seafood and meat.

Some dishes are simplicity themselves, such as the wonderful Peppered Shrimp. Others are much more involved and complicated, such as the Stuffed Boned Chicken Legs. Still, if you are truly interested in learning about a wonderful and often overlooked cuisine, there is no better Mexican cookbook I've found yet that contained so many delicious and different recipes. Highly recommended.

The best of coastal Mexico

Mexican chef and New York restaurateur, Zarela has very decided and exacting ideas about food. She came late to the cuisine of coastal Veracruz, thinking it too touristy and modern for her taste. But she has come to love the place and opens her book with a culinary driving tour of the region, discussing terrain, local ingredients and the best restaurants. The recipes make plentiful use of seafood, various chilies, corn, beans, tomatoes, citrus and avocado.

From Almond Soup to Shrimp Salad to Totonac-Style Beans with Pumpkin Seeds to Shredded Chicken in Blackberry Liqueur Sauce, Zarela insists on fresh herbs, painstaking preparations and the finest ingredients (which she often laments of finding in the U.S.). Dishes range from simple to elaborate (more time-consuming than complicated); the photographs of the region and the food are beautiful, and Zarela's directions are clear. This is Mexican food at its finest.

I truly enjoyed reading through this book. I do have to say though, that it's sad to read about the Centro Cultural de la Raza in San Diego when it was a thriving grassroots Chicano arts and culture venue. Just three years ago, it succumbed to a corporate takeover throwing the original artists/founders out as a result. The place still operates but it's not a true Chicano venue by any means. It's Disney Mexico-Land at best. It's clear the struggle is far from over, and although many think the Chicano Movement is no longer necessary (yeah, believe it or not, I've heard it said!), I beg to differ.

The information in this book could be the news of today, and in some ways, things have gotten worse. This book was written pre-NAFTA, pre-expanded xenophobia since 9/11 and pre-expanded anti-immigrant (Mexican) sentiment in California, so who could have believed things could actually get worse! But they did. Time to rev up the movement again.

include Mexican revolution history as their history? I just started laughing. I said, ay mami! I said, do you consider me Mexican, she said yes, i said do you consider me American, she said yes, I said, do you consider me both, and she said yes, and I said, then both histories are part of my history, except that my history is different that just american history, so this book shows in pictures people I need to learn about, and stories I need to hear. She said, ok mija.... but anyway, this book is great. An old High School Teacher from El Cajon High School in San Bernardino teaches his spanish class with this book. It was $25 dollars back then, but this book is wonderful. It teaches us how we learn most easliy. I mean, most people like me who come from indigenous backgrounds learn orally and visually their traditions, and this book helped me learn about my history visually and literally too because it is bilingual. It has great poems from I am Joaquin to excerpts from Gloria Anzaldua, and of course all your favorite farm labor activists, and chicano activists from the 70's. I love this book. Its definately a must buy for all chicanos who want to teach their kids about their history. z

This book was very eye opening, it opens the minds of people to ideas that are not in the our American "HISTORY" books. Besides reading about the struggles that Chicanos faced, it also has pictures (to visualize). The book is not only informative but empowering. Anyone working for Justice should read this book, because it encourages the reader to fight the fight.

The Walk Through Protocol, along with the structures and processes for teacher collaboration, effectively engages teachers in meaningful examination of student learning in a non-threatening, empowering manner.

Breaking Through to Effective Teaching is aptly titled--the ideas and strategies presented here are simple and yet ground-breaking in effecting systemic change! This elegant little book offers a model that takes the anxiety and sting out of the classroom walk-through and turns it into a source of powerful tools to enrich student learning. Teachers are empowered with new strategies to visit each other's classrooms, searching for those practices that are getting the desired results. Rather than concentrating on "fixing" what's wrong, classroom visitors are urged to focus like a laser on what's working. This releases the potential that exists in every school and builds an enthusiastic community of learners and inquirers. The many examples and case studies will be helpful to administrators, teachers and community members who crave a culture of positive energy, mutual support and impressive results! I highly recommend it.

Martinez adds detail and insight into the stories of families featured on this PBS series. The video available from PBS and his book provide an excellent combination for educators, community leaders, and the general public to better appreciate the strengths and resolve immigrants bring to this country as well as the barriers, obstacles, and prejudices they face from those whose families came to the nation in earlier times.

Nicely illustrated with the photography of Joseph Rodriguez, New Americans by Ruben Martinez recounts the dramatic journeys of seven new immigrant families to America, and their settling in this country; from an Asian couple from the computer industry of India to a Mexican family working meatpacking plants in Kansas. Excellent stories of survival and cultural adjustment evolve.

WOW! Thanks Martin Martinez for having the courage to come forward with this life saving information. I am a patient who uses marijuana to treat my debilitating migraine headaches. I believe marijuana has saved my life. I have also worked with cancer, AIDS and other seriously ill patients whose lives have been saved by this magical medicinal herb. Im so glad to see a book written for the patient population that adequately explains how to heal with marijuana. Finally, we have a book written by a patient for the patients! Lets get this life saving information out there so that other patients lives can be saved by having the tools and information to heal with medical marijuana. Thanks again Martin. You definitely are an ANGEL from heaven.

Finally a concise, articulate and user friendly book on the controversial subject of medicinal Marijuana, available from Quick American Archives Publishing. "The New Prescription-Marijuana As Medicine" by Martin Martinez relies both on anecdotal evidence and scientific study to outline the myriad of positive applications the cannabis plant offers in the treatment and managment of many modern illnesses.

With an insightful forward by Seattle medical marijuana activist Dr.Francis Podrebarec, The New Prescription details the failures of past and current administrations to even allow clinical study of the medicinal properties of the multi-faceted plant, while chronicling it's extensive history dating back thousands of years.

As informative but more user friendly than it's counterpart the "Marijuana Medical Handbook" (Ed Rosenthal, Dale Gieringer, Tod Mikuriya, M.D.), Martinez' work does not limit itself to professing only the positive aspects of the illicit weed. In addition to extolling the virtues of marijuana's effect on illnesses from cancer, multiple sclerosis and even anorexia, there are chapters exploring anxiety attacks, delerium and dependence.

This is a well written, plain english layman's guide to medical cannabis in an easy to read format. Complete with appendices, extensive notes, and bibliography, The New Perscription is a thoughtful, serious work dedicated to informing the inquisitive reader from an unbiased yet accurate perspective. This promises to be a must have for activists, patients and medical professionals.

I used to smoke marijuana when I was at college and recently my dad was diagnosed with MS, I thought marijuana would help him with the pain but he was really against it. I gave him this book and amazingly he read it and after discussing it with his doctor is now eating a cookie once a day. It won't cure him but it really helps him deal with the pain. Thanks for a well researched honest book.
