The Authors Passionate Conviction for A&P Shows
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-11
Living Anatomy is a different kind of A&P text, one which focuses on understanding A&P and not memorizing an enormous amount of information. If I had used this text for my undergraduate text in A&P I would have LEARNED MUCH MORE ANATOMY AND, MORE IMPORTANT WOULD HAVE ENJOYED THE COURSE MORE. The book I used was King and Showers,5th edition, a text that has been around for many years but uses the facts and more facts approach and in my experience tended to turn off students (fortunately my love for biology and science was such that nothing turned me off). The book reads like a story book and will appeal to general readers. The author is a professor of anatomy at the University of Melbourne and has a long string of publications under his belt. I noted some mistakes, such as the claim, commonly repeated, but now shown to be in error by several studies, that we share 99 percent of our DNA with gorillas (actually chimps), a number that came from early hybridization studies. One comment I found interesting, which was found on page 424, was human anatomy is "certainly vastly more complex than the ticking watch cited in chapter 1, which by its very existence seemed to demand the presence of a watchmaker" an admission that I have seen more often in science books as of late. This may say something about the success of the Intelligent Design movement in reaching professional scientists. This text certainly supports the view that the body is marvelously designed, as are the bodies of all life. A study of A&P vividly confirms this conclusion

A comprehensive steam engine reference.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-13
In 1903, when railroads were the only way to transport people and products long distances, thousands of steam locomotives moved the population and the commerce of America. This book details, with hundreds of illustrations and articles, the ingenious devices, some of which will be new to you, that made those locomotives work. Lamps, stokers, air pumps, brakes, gauges, valves, and all the bells and whistles of such magnificent and robust design are shown and explained.

If you like steam locomotives, you will love this book-- and find it endlessly informative and entertaining. It is such a comprehensive work that it is used by the Grand Canyon Railway in their fireman training classes.

Filled with gorgeous full color photography, Professor Marshall Craigmyle's The Long-Flowering Garden is an impressive and superbly illustrated encyclopedic listing of more than 500 plants of all types, with each entry offering a given flower's common name, height, spread, aspect, preferred soil type, hardiness, means of propagation, flowering time, short description, and perhaps most useful, a listing of the pros and cons for choosing that specific flower for one's garden. An index makes looking up basic information on any flower a snap. The Long-Flowering Garden is excellent as a quick reference, and simply wondrous to page through to admire the brilliant horticultural photographs on every page.

Action-packed Cattle Drive Adventure
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-12
This cattle drive adventure is excellent due to its plot and historical accuracy. Most cattle drive stories are set much later after the railroads were built. This one is set before the railroads came. In fact, it is a fictionalized account of the first cattle drive from Texas to Montana by Nelson Story in 1866. A man had to be crazy to even think of it - pushing a thousand head of mean-spirited Longhorns through 2000 miles of unconquered Native American territory. When the main character Whit Moody, a "galvanized" Yankee, sets to "wetback" his cattle north through American country to the otherside into U.S. army-controlled Montana territory, he must avoid Native Americans doing Homeland Security since 1492. That and crossing swollen rivers - the Red River, the Cimarron, the Ar-Kansas, Smoky Hill River, Republican River, and Platte River. On top of that, Kansas Yankees ignorant of Texas fever made them go clear around Kansas. Then the Army at Fort Kearny prohibited them from going on because they might provoke the Native Americans. But Whit Moody does it. And with a little luck he makes it. Along the way, the reader learns alot about Longhorns and the 1860s out West.

Longman Crossword Key - invaluable

This is an excellent book for assisting in solving all types of crosswords. It is a must have. I have an old, rather sad looking copy of this (due to lots & lots of use!). I am looking for a hardcopy which I am hoping will last better (or a better condition soft copy).

I do not know why they have discontinued this publication - I am sure it is/was well used.

My kid's favorite alphabet book!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-29
My 3 1/2 year old daughter checked this book out from the library, and then begged me to read it over and over and didn't want to take it back. My 5 1/2 year old son liked it equally as well. They would take turns saying the letter, and guessing the picture on the next page. They would fight over who's turn it was. I was, quite frankly, surprised that they liked it so much, and that's why I'm writing this review, because it was quite a hit!

High-Stakes Royal Intrigue and Spiritual Enlightenment.
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-05
Intrigue at the highest levels of royalty...a ghost story set in the burial chambers of a pharaoh's pyramid...a mystery to test the mind and loyalty of a hero and determine the fate of Egypt herself - these are the stakes at risk in the twin books EYES OF HORUS and LORD OF THE HORIZON, by Joan Grant.

These two books were written to be published as one, but: The year was 1942 and author and publisher were in wartime England, where there was a severe paper shortage.  So, the book was made into two, with one published in 1942 and the second in 1944.  Each is complete and easy to read, but to experience the vast sweep of historical significance in the events of the stories, one should read first HORUS and then HORIZON.

Both are recommended for all who are interested in spiritual enlightenment, ancient Egypt, and grand writing by an author with a sweeping command of language, history and imagery.

Dr. Marshall does a great job of explaining the water problems and the grass roots efforts of activists within the Appalachian region. Though the price is kinda steep, I'd recommend this book to anyone who is interested in environmental activism.
