Although much of the information covered here is available in the more easily found Spirit of St Andrews, this original work is far more profound in the impact it has on the reader.
Inside is an overview of Mackenzie's views on golf architecture, mostly drawing on his experience while in the UK. It was after this book was published that he found his way to the Americas and left a lasting mark on the profession.
By reading and rereading this book, much of what was upheld by the classic architects not only becomes clearer, but it also shows us quickly how course construction has strayed from its early ideals.
The renewed interest in golf architecture, and Mackenzie in particular, will hopefully spawn a new age of course construction. This book, one of the best of its kind, should be read by the student in whatever edition he can find.

To clarify a detail or two, the book was first published in hardback in 1960 by the copyright owners NICHOLSON KAY LTD,194-200 BISHOPSGATE, LONDON EC2 and was printed in England by Adlard & Son Ltd, of London and Dorking.
The book is extensively illustrated by GRAHAM with all the quips and complaints used by modern golfers.
The book is full of light hearted humour about a very serious game and has several anecdotes that apply to many situations other than golf.

A flower of consciousness appears among us

As heralded by such masters as Eckhart Tolle and Don Ruiz the earth at this time is graced by a number of awakened divine flowers of consciousness which grace us with their tremendous healing power and gentility. Marshall Ball is no doubt one such light in our world. His healing gift is through the power of his words. In this important document of our time [A Good Kiss] Marshall Ball uses his gentle and seemingly simple use of the English language to incite a healing effect that evokes deep emotions and directly effects the heart. Short of a miracle, both of Marshall Ball's books are a collection of communications poetically expressed and clearly echo teachings from A Course in Miracles, Eckhart Tolle's Power of Now and Stillness Speaks, and the Conversations with God books, none of which have been a source of study for this young man of 17. It seems Truth is spoken again by another source of pure love, but here, with heavenly gentleness and a poetic voice that can lift and heal the coldest of hearts. I highly recommend reading and studying both "A Good Kiss" and "Kiss of God" as material for spiritual study and personal growth. May this gentle heavenly force continue to grace us with his divine wisdom and healing voice.

John Marshall [1755-1835] was Chief Justice of the United States for the last 34 years of his life. During his long tenure, he turned the Supreme Court from an afterthought into a primary tool for the centralization of federal power; he defined America, though we can still debate whether he got the definition right. This book details how Marshall went about his task.....
This is NOT a biography of John Marshall [see my other reviews]; it is a series of case studies which trace the expanding power of the Federal Judiciary...Marbury v. Madison established the principle of Judicial review of legislative decisions...Virginia v. Cohens asserted federal authority in state affairs...the National Bank...land titles...Indian treaties......there is still disagreement over some of Marshall's decisions, and there was hell to pay over some of them at the time. "John Marshall has made his decision; now let's see him enforce it"...the various ramifications of that statement {which Andrew Jackson MAY not have ever made} are mind boggling....
Charles Hobson is editor of The John Marshall Papers, one of the 2 or 3 greatest living Marshall scholars, and a nice guy [as was Marshall]; he has written a five star book. Do I actually recommend it? Maybe. If you are an attorney or historian with an interest in the topic, it is an absolutely essential volume. Well written, well organized; for me, it was a page turner. For the casual reader, don't waste your money, or insult Mr. Hobson. You will need a good background in either Law [not me], or history [me] to understand it.

For me, this book, along with Radermacher's other recent publications, is an essential part of the bunch of keys humanity needs if it would respond to the current developmental and environmental crisis.
