Riveting True Story of survival at Sea
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.

The Newfoundlanders in this book show the intelligence, determination, and resourcefulness of these island people. Once you start this book you can't put it down. All those that love the sea will enjoy this book. The North Atlantic can be very unfriendly and you really get to see it first hand here. It is hard to believe that people can over come such hardships and battle 'mother nature,' but step by step we see it here. Great reading.

Fourier transforms and spectroscopy
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-15
This book applies the theory of Fourier transforms to their use in spectroscopy, based on using graphical examples to illustrate the mathematical properties discussed. It is useful for areas of spectroscopy other than those in the titles, since the concepts are applicable to many FT methods of data acquisition. Especially recommended for beginners trying to learn about the implications of FT techniques in their research.

Classic James Marshall

If you have a child between 3 and 8, you should buy this book. The late, great James Marshall (Edward was a pseudonym) had the rare ability to tell a story using easy-to-read words, but still with genuinely surprising and humorous twists. This book's ending is a brilliant twist, which I will not spoil here.

If you don't have a child the right age, you should buy this anyway, but you may have to think of an excuse.

This book ranks with Marshall's best, which also include the sublime "Three By the Sea," as well as the better-known "Miss Nelson" and "George & Martha" books.

A note to the publisher: You really should keep James Marshall's better books available in hardcover library editions. This guy's best works are classics, and they'll continue to sell for at least another century.

As usual with the books of James Marshall, the combinations of the words and the silly pictures make this a very funny book. Fox lose his big part in the class play, is afraid to go down a slide for a fire drill, and is left in charge of the class by Miss Moon.

James Marshall is skilled at writing books to hook low level readers. I use these books in the classroom to get even the most reluctant of readers to devour these stories. If only there were more!!

I never tired of reading the Fox stories with my sons. They're a great laugh, even for parents. So many easy-to-reads are a bit boring, but these are inventive.

Marshall Ketchum's revised, expanded second edition of FREDERICK CARDER'S STEUBEN GLASS: GUIDE TO SHAKES, NUMBERS, COLORS, FINISHES, AND VALUES is a 'must' for any collector, offering a new edition which can be used with other books displaying Carder's Steuben glass productions. A cross referencing system links the line drawings of shapes to be found in Paul Gardner's THE GLASS OF FREDERICK CARDER with auction records and references to photos in the nine books cited here: the result is an invaluable index and cross-linked reference Steuben collectors will find essential.

Incredible Insight and Organization
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-18
I'm an avid reader and have read many, many books, mostly doctrinal. I'd never heard of Tom Marshall until my family and I were serving as missionaries to the former USSR. I picked it up at a seminar we attended in Helsinki, Finland, and I'm sure glad I did.

Tom Marshall's book stands out as one which brings the true message of freedom in Christ to a real-world application level. He provides a fascinating explanation of Romans without being a commentary on Romans.

Moreover, his organization of the book is well thought out and illustrated, rather than being a bunch of scattered thoughts. While the price is high, the book's published in New Zealand, so shipping takes its toll. Even if it were twice the cost, though, it would be worth it. This is hands down one of the best books I've ever read and deserves a place in everyone's library.

more than a cookbook

From a Monastery Kitchen is a cookbook, sure. And it has excellent, practical and simple recipes that I have used again and again.

But it is far more than a cookbook. Surrounding each recipe are the most wonderful prayers, quotes, pictures, stories, etc. They are by turns inspiring, thought-provoking and heart-warming. I really can't recommend this book highly enough.

Please Note: I have been told that the newer edition has far, far fewer of the surrounding text and pictures, so make sure it is the older edition you get if that is what you are interested in.
