As everyone knows, the fundamental problem with contemporary poetry is the complete absence of any shared criterion for judgment. DARE SAY, Tod Marshall's astounding debut collection, calls glaring attention to this deficiency. Here is poetry that declares without qualification or snickering inside-information its generous humanity, its verbal dexterity, its beauty and inventiveness and wisdom and sheer overwhelming emotional force. Begin with Whitman, run through Stevens, Williams, and Pound, and detour through Revell and Levine, and you begin to locate where Marshall resides: namely, in the absolute center of the primary tradition of American poetry in this century. From the daring updating of modernism that is "After Kandinsky," to the heartbreaking urban-sprawl confessional "Metaphyisc, with Applebys," and all the way to the unapologetic hymn to our divine carnality, "Choir," a poem that I have permanently hanging on my wall in my office to remind me of the core of my existence, this is a collection that makes mincemeat of most of the competition.

Uncommon spirit

Roscoe Pound was Carter Professor of Jurisprudence at Harvard University in the first half of the twentieth century. This text, derived from a series of lectures given in the 1910s, has held up over time (its initial publication was in 1921, and has been reissued periodically ever since) as a touchstone of historical and theoretical explorations of what common law is and how it operates, both in the British and American contexts.

Unlike constitutional law and other kinds of codified law from legislative bodies, the common law is more of a development from the masses, at least insofar as it connects with the judicial aspects of government which in turn recognises certain things as legal or illegal. Indeed, Pound sees the triumph of the idea of the supremacy of law over authority to be a victory of the spirit of the common law (specifically, he refers to the supremacy of the law over the Stuart monarchs in Britain, but also that common law practice has survived Renaissance, Reformation and the institution of Roman law).

Pound looks at the common law in different phases - feudal underpinnings, Puritan influences, relationship between judiciary and the Crown/executive authority, philosophers such as Locke, and growing judicial practice in the trans-Atlantic context during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Pound does have a distaste of law for law's sake, and warns against attitudes that are 'a natural result of measuring the law solely by standards drawn from the law itself.' He is strongly concerned with the idea that the law be accessible to all, regardless of background, education, or ability to pay - there should not be one law for the rich and another for the poor.

Law is for the betterment of society, and the spirit of the common law has this at heart, according to Pound. This text of Pound's, an enduring favourite, is a good exposition of how and why the law is important for a well-regulated society, and how the spirit of the common law needs to be cherished, preserved and strengthened by the legal profession for the sake of whole community.

I selected this book as a gift for my mom, and she loved it. So did I. THere are intersting photographs of Catherine and her family, pictures of old letters, stories, and, what I enjoyed most of all, quotes from Mrs. Marshall, Peter Marshall, and from "Christy". We keep this book on our coffee table where it's always handy to flip through. I highly reccomend.

Nice synthesis of decision making problems in a triadic framework of data collection, forecasting and decision making. The tools for decision making such as influence diagrams, decision trees, and analytical hierarchy process discussed with rich examples. The book title is a misnomer as far as forecasting techniques since it lacks any discussion of any forecasting techniques. Otherwise, it is a novel presentation on decision analysis. The forecasting aspect refers to the forecast information that will reduce uncertainty in the decision making situation. Forecasting is, thus, an information acquisition decision, the soundness of which depends on the "value of information," a recurring theme in this book.

A must for all management scientists and decision analysis professionals with an inquiring mind. This book is one of my prized possessions.

Best Guide for Gardening in North Florida

Review Date: 2000-09-27
Mr. Marshall has written an excellent book in easy to understand terminology, organized by what to do each month. It is the most concise and accurate book I have found for the south Georgia and Alabama, north Florida area. The photos are great and the information is based upon over 20 years of his experience with the University of Florida Horticulture Center in Tallahassee.

If you want the best information, buy this book. Hopefully it will be back in print soon.

This book is an exceptionally rare commodity, a tome written by perhaps the world's foremost expert on the design and construction of welded tubular connections. It offers a concise synopsis of the history and rationale of the provisions in the AWS D1.1 code that deal with this unique kind of welded joint. I have had the honor of working with the author, Dr. Marshall, and can truly say that 90% of the current clauses on this subject in the AWS code were written by him.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about wanting to change their life for the better. I am a true believer in the power of the Releasing Strategy. I have had a weight problem all of my life. About 10 months ago, I got my hands on a self-help cassette series entitled Permanent Weight Loss by Dr.Clark Cameron. This tape series covers the Releasing Strategy developed by Dr. Clark Cameron and Sharon Marshall Cameron. After listening to the tapes, I was highly motiviated to change my life and my health. I tracked down Clark and Sharon and went to see Sharon for some counciling. I have slowly but surely been shedding the pounds ever since. Quiet effortlessly. I bought a copy of this book and have read it several times since then. It helps keep me focused on where I am going.

The Releasing Strategy is simple and no matter what your problem is, it will help you change for the better!

This dictionary, offers a comprehensive guide to more than 1,550 of his characters & to the works in which they appear. From the early "Sketches by Boz" to the unfinished "Edwin Drood", no character is forgotten, even the most minor. Every entry contains a brief description of the person and references to all the chapters & important incidents in which he or she appears. For the major characters there are also appropriate quotations from the original works. An additional 200 entries deal with imaginary places, societies, and allusions. Philip has also included a fascinating index providing the originals and prototypes of characters & places in the works of Charles Dickens...
