This is a disturbing, but eye opening book. I knew there has been much corporate crime, but I was not aware of the extent of it nor of the many forms it takes. With the rapidly growing power and wealth of corporations in the world today, public awareness of this large scale hanky panky is essentail. All responsible citizens of modern democracies should be aware of what is so well presented in this book.

Joretta Marshall writes this book not only for pastoral caregivers, but also for the general public. She clearly defines words such as lesbian, homosexuality, heterosexism, sexism and identity. This book is a wonderful introduction for how the wider public can best relate to and affirm women who are in covenantal partnerships with other women. She also emphasizes the crucial importance of the role that pastoral caregivers play in counseling women in lesbian relationships. It is imperative, she says, that pastoral caregivers affirm lesbians in their relationships as well as challenge institutions, such as the church, to accept and affirm the relationships that women have with women.

Georges Sadoul is the father of film critics. Here he collects the classics of cinema, with utter sensitivity and complete knowledge. If you have ever felt lost in the video store, looking for a classic or foreign film, then let Sadoul be your guide. As more and more early and obscure films are released on video, you will find them hard to locate in some Maltin or (blech) Blockbuster guide. This book, alongside the even more informative, Dictionary of Filmmakers, is mandatory for any film connoisseur trying to get a grip of film history

"The book is very thorough, and covers every aspect of self-publishing, from the reasons for self-publishing to online resources, software to use, the development of your book, putting together a promotional list, setting up communications systems, book production, websites, promotion and legalities. As Creative Self-Publishing in the World Marketplaceis also self-published, it serves as an example of a finished product, whose format can be copied. Chamberlain doesn't hold back on any area either. He includes his own personal systems, cost estimates, and a range of tips and hints. This is not a book you can easily skim, however. The type is small, and there is little white space and no sidebars to break up the text. Chamberlain rarely repeats himself, and there are no lighthearted quips and few anecdotes. None of these are major criticisms, but it does make for a fairly heavy read. Clinard and Quinny examine crime and develop a typology for it that is a little at variance with popular ideas, but they defend their typology well, and it makes sense. They classify crime in 9 categories, among them: conventional crime; occasional property crime; violent personal crime; organized crime; public order crime; corporate crime; professional crime; occupational crime; and political crime. In each category they examine the same features pertinent to all criminal behavior. They examine the criminal career of the offender in each category, public and legal attitudes toward these individuals, support systems they may have, attitudes of the offenders, and other features. Their discussion of each category of crime is thorough and enlightening. A reading of this work will take the reader far in understanding the huge problem of crime, establishing intelligent definitions, and even making him or her aware of crime of great consequence that law enforcement has no legal tools to deal with and that is often actually opaque to both law enforcement, to the judicial system, and to the public. As far as I know, this work is a classic in criminology, familiar to all criminologists, and is often a text for university level courses in criminology.

For lay people and civilians, this is a great insight into one of police work's most critical functions. As a journalist and author, I recently found myself referring to Dr. MacDonald's book (and others on forensic matters) for a very complex tale of rape and murder. His grasp of police processes and rape issues, their underpinnings and their ultimate effects is eloquently stated and well organized in this text. His experience in forensic psychiatry, supplemented by his advisory work for the Denver Police Department and consultation status for the courts, is a valuable resource. I recommend this text as a good civilian reference.

The majority of Marshall's books are written after interviewing soldiers who just got out of combat. He served as an official historian for the Pacific and European Theaters of Operations in World War II, Korea, and went to Vietnam as both an observer and an advisor. For obvious reasons, he could not question veterans of the Great Plaines Indian Wars. This book, therefore, is somewhat of a departure for Marshall.

The main purpose of "Crimson Prairie" is to show what tactic worked and which did not. Discussing several battles, Marshall demonstrates that the United States Army was not prepared to engage in the gorilla-like fighting that the specialty of Native-Americans. Indeed, he shows that the white soldiers failed time and again in the face of superior tactics because they constantly underestimated their opponents and their training had not prepared them for fighting Native-Americans.

Another aspect of "Crimson Prairie" concerns the idea that the white people were the sole aggressor in the Indian Wars. Marshall demonstrates that on a number of occasions Native-Americans acted as savagely and aggressively against non-threatening outposts. The author shows that the bloodshed was not as one-sided as many people believe. Marshall does not support or side with either side. Instead he uses an analytic and objective style that shows that both sides committed atrocities, although the Americans proved more aggressive and their abhorrent actions proved far more brutal than the Native-American's.

For those who enjoy Marshall's work, this book is a must have. His expertise in dissecting operations is apparent throughout the pages and his prose, as always, is impeccable.

A Cry In The Wilderness is not, and was not meant to be a graphic crime scene account of the Texas Seven, but is more of a biographical account of the life of one man that was doomed to failure from the start. In his direct and conversational manner, Joseph will take you through his life, introducing you to the friends and family that molded him from his youngest years, until the time of his incarceration in the Connally Unit of TX. While a history of abuse is never an excuse for the commission of crime, it does demonstrate how some culpability should be borne by those who commit this abuse on children and leaves one to wonder what if things had been different. A great read for those interested in criminal psychology, child psychology, or non-sensational accounts of human behavior.

I am an elementary school teacher and I really enjoyed reading this book and believe my student would enjoy the story as well. It was a very quick read and I would recommend it to any young reader. It has a great message for children in the book. The main character, Sarah, is not happy with anything in her life, she is jealous of the girl next door, Mercedes, because she has prettier hair, earrings, and Sarah's pigeons build a nest on Mercedes' window sill. The two end up bonding over two sets of pigeons and the Sarah learns a lesson in friendship.
