I chose this book to read to my preschool class during our water theme, and they just love it.
The cute pictures and fun rhymes draws them in. But beware, they'll want you to read it again and again and again!

S.L.A. Marshall was an official historian for the Army during World War II, Korea and served as an advisor in Vietnam. Most of his work deals with the mental, physical, and emotional problems men faced in combat. He always wanted to show what did not work and why tactics failed in the hopes that people would learn from past mistakes. With that goal, Marshall tends to focus on the "bad" side of combat -- men dying needlessly and commanders who botched operations. Battle at Best is not one of his normal books. Marshall culled his interviews (all his research was carried out in the field with combatants who had just finished an action) and came up with examples that show great heroics. Instead of focusing on what went wrong, SLAM delves into what went right and how officers and men came to make the correct decisions. I am a great fan of Marshall's work and this, along with Men Again Fire, is the most enjoyable and enlightening books that I have read.

Inspiring transgenerational vision

Review Date: 2008-06-10
This book sat in our home barely read (had babies and family responsibilities) for 12 years. It was given to me by a person who helped raise funds for the ministry.

This book first summarizes how God works and triumphs in every major events in history; how God works in every major people in history; and how any believing family in Christ can be used by God in the same fashion. The promise only holds true if that family or person is faithful in following God's commands.

I almost regretted I could only give it sparse attention for 12 years (as it sat in my children's homeschool library and moved around several times). Imagine the lost time I had in not implementing the principles taught right away....but one day I just sped read it along with other related books and once I got to it, I could not put it down. It is very inspirational. If you are a Christ believer and you have a vision for how you could influence your child with an eternal outlook, this book will do that. (I am glad this is not one of the books I sold in my yard sale or donated to the library).

Good books to read as well are " Kingdom Education" and "Teaching our Covenant Children."

those of us who were there know what it like to be in combat in the central highlands. If you weren't there Marshall's realistic writting will put you there. His words are as close as you want to be. Life and death small unit engagements in the jungle and on the artillery firebases. The gripping sacrifices of soldiers facing death is all to personal. Marshall puts names on faces and their faces stare out at you from the numerous photographs. A must read book concentrating on the actual small units under fire in 1966 Viet-Nam

One of the best military history books ever written
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Excellent illustrations, descriptions and text related to 20 of the most important battles ever fought and its corresponding generals (both winners and lossers). This book takes the reader from Alexander the great to Moshe Dayan not only explaining the battles themselves but also the causes, aftermaths and interesting factors related to them. In conclusion, one of the best military history books that I have ever read (If not the best)

I really enjoyed this book. My favorite part is when Hattie goes to the old mine and sees all of the bats flying out. It proves that peoples ideas and personalities can change. I would recommend reading it if you have some free time. Overall I would rate this book EXCELLENT!

Louisiana Comes Alive in this Book
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

This was a wonderful romance. The world of bayou Louisiana comes to life under the skillful prose of Sarah Storme. She creates more than a setting; she creates how people think and act in the bayou. Daniel Griffin is the new minister, an outsider sent to this out-of-the-way church. He is doubting his faith in his choice of ministry and regards this assignment as a stopover until he can return to the city. Mae Strickler also intends to return to the city after she spends two weeks watching her younger sister while her parents travel to Ohio to care for another daughter who is dying. Neither Mae nor Daniel want a relationship to interfere with their plans, but the heart has its own agenda. Mae is a modern girl of the 1920's who chafes at the restrictions imposed upon women--especially in the bayou. Yet Daniel accepts her for who she is and such acceptance is too heady for her to resist. She challenges Daniel and in her challenge, Daniel finds his faith rekindled. He needs her and God to continue.

This being a Louisiana story, there is a hurricane which I read with great absorption--especially after Katrina. I liked the bayou atmosphere and the romance. If you want to experience another time and place, you won't go wrong with Bayou Rhapsody.
