I found this marvelous book when my oldest daughter was about 2 years old! I should have bought it then! The story of Fenimore B. Buttercrunch and his efforts to go to market are so funny, it is worth the search that Amazon made to get this wonderful out-of -print book! My daughter has a daughter of her own now and I can hardly wait to read "I Will Not Go To Market Today" to her! It is positively hysterical and I hope someone can get it back into print!

Mr McMurran has written a very thoughtful exposition on the foibles, follies and fools that he encountered in a very successful life. His career was technical but the events and lessons learned are applicable to any business. The lessons he draws from his real life experiences are instructive and insightful. I highly recommend this book to anyone already in, or thinking about entering, management. And it was fun to read! Thomas Cox

Comments on Marshall McMurran's " If It Weren't for People Management Would Be a Science" from a Canadian who has managed successfully to steer clear of technology but gets hooked by books. You have achieved a major triumph here, Mr. McMurran. You have pointed your pen not only for America but for the entire world. You have been closely involved in the American technological revolution and found the courage to tell it like it was, warts and all. "Good rarely happens..." "It was vital that the technical and human elements played in harmony..." Are you listening to this wisdom, you price fixers? you global moguls? "Many changes...were about to bloom along with the California poppy..." Assuming you weren't referring to the new growth industry of opium in your state, Mr. McMurran, it's another example of your wonderful facility to talk facts in metaphors, making this book accessible for all of us who really should know more about technology. Thanks from Sheila Reid in Manitoba Canada.

Since reading Illustrated Guide to Taping Techniques I have learned many different techniques used to tape a wide range of body parts and injuries. The information in this book is far more valuable then the money I payed for it. In addition to being very indepth with the tapings it also has sections that describe on what injuries the taping should be used and how to tell which taping to do before you apply any tape.

Illustrated guide to Taping Techniques gets thumbs up

Illustrated Guide To Taping Techniques is a very thorough and complete sports taping manual. It covers all taping, from the basic preventative taping to the more advanced injury specific taping. What I like about the book is that while it is concise, you do not have to be a physiotherapist to understand it. It gives easy to follow instructions along with labelled pictures of the techniques. This book is a must for anybody working as a sports trainer or remedial therapist and is very reasonably priced. I give this book my thumbs up and it certainly goes into the most used book pile in my collection.

Great Book! Deals with Domestic Violence for Christian Women

Review Date: 1999-05-02
This is the first book with a Christian perspective that I read which gave me a basis for ending my abusive marriage. It was the first book that told me that God loves BOTH partners in a marriage- and that it was NOT OKAY for my husband to be abusive. It states that SUBMISSION IS NOT SLAVERY OR BEING A DOORMAT! THIS WAS THE FIRST BOOK THAT GAVE ME PERMISSION TO QUESTION HIS AUTHORITY OVER ME AS THE HEAD OF OUR HOME! Unfortunately, it took me 10 more years to finally be free of his contol and abuse, but I credit this book with giving me the freedom to survive! A MUST for ANY WOMAN WHO QUESTIONS HER HUSBAND'S CONTROLLING, ISOLATING OR ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR- ESPECIALLY IF SHE IS A CHRISTIAN AND BELIEVES IN THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE.

I've been a believer since I was a small child. I have struggled 24 years and endured much anguish, disappointment, emotional, and physical pain in regard to my marriage relationship. For all those years I excused my husband's behaviors (verbal and emotional abuse, escalating to physical the past 6 years...). In the past 2 years the verbal and emotional reached an excruciating level, and I was totally oblivious to the covert ways my husband CHOSE to try and manipulate me. (He didn't even realize it was abuse! He did it to "help" me or "for your own good".) I realized if he didn't choose to do it, he'd do it to everyone, not just me! OUCH! That took me a week to accept! And longer to "sink in"! I always excused these unloving behaviors as the result of growing up in a dysfunctional family with an alcoholic father who physically and emotionally abused my husband throughout his childhood. Being a Christian with a strong personal relationship, I dilligently tried to be a submissive, godly wife - even took mentoring/advice from women who seemed "wise" which actually encouraged further abuse! IT WAS THIS PARTICULAR BOOK WHICH pointed me to various scriptures and clearly discussed the topics related to submission (like separation) I had been misled into what submission was (I fervently had been studying the subject as DAILY life was SOOO stressful and I saw the effects of my husband's no longer hiding his cruel words, scoldings, criticism, etc. from the children... and how THEY were beginning to receive the verbal abuse!) I was teaching a group of women on marriage, and the upcoming chapter was on submission, and I just HAD to study the topic more deeply as I had no peace on the whole submission topic in marriage. It sure didn't "work" for our family. IT WAS THIS book which gave me the eye-opening knowledge and the necessary peace and confidence to take action just a few days later when an insignificant incident in 5 min. escalated into my husband's assaulting me - leaving evidence - I was knowledgeable enough THEN to realize, that THIS was not submission as God desires. This book clearly led me through the scriptures on the topic. Using this new biblical based knowledge, I humbled myself and with God's peace (spoken of in Phillipians Ch.4), took the steps necessary to help my husband and our family... Including filing a protective order - this was the third incident I had WARNED him "I'll turn you in if you touch me" and he did. I had requested 6 times in the past 18 months that he get help (that' not counting scattered requests over the first 20+ yrs.), and I took steps to submit my family's future and his/our recovery to the eldership and local court system. It was not easy, nor painless, but was incredibly exhilarating to know I was no longer trapped in submission, but was able to see that our home life was grieving the Holy Spirit. It's been only 8 wks., but reviewing my prayerfully taken steps, inspired by this book, after all these years, the kids and I are feeling great relief. As well-meaning Christians try to "help" with advice - naive to what verbal and emotional abuse are, I return to my highlights in this book and the referenced scriptures and assure myself that despite outsider's opinions, advice and sometimes judgement... the decisions I have made were done in love, and are pleasing to our Lord. With all the abuse done privately at home or in the car, my fine, highly educated, white collar, upstanding citizen, husband would never have been recognized as an abuser. Easy to make the necessary decisions, no! But renewed hope for reconcilliation and healing with the wisdom and scripture based advice found in this book. He has NOW been willing to get counseling from a professional (kids and I are also, too). He just recently realized he has been abusive... still a looonnnggg way to go, but a breakthrough! Because we are separated I have had many fingers of judgement pointed at me that I am not being a submissive wife! "You're taking control...calling the shots... didn't submit to him... should not be apart, should study God's word, you didn't wait on God long enough!" (Wish they could just have spent ONE day in my shoes at home and they'd think differently!) I assure those "uneducated in abuse" persons I've done my homework BOTH in the Bible and many books. THIS BOOK was the MOST helpful, clear, and detailed on the subject of submission and abuse! IT HELPED ME SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN Biblical submission and ABUSE! I am buying more copies to share, one for the local abuse shelter and ESPECIALLY to educate the judgemental, well-meaning Christian friends - people whom if they were to read this book would most likely see how UNsupportive and misguided they are on this subject - at a time, when my family members need support, not more injuries! THIS BOOK gave me the realization that separation with the intent to heal and reconcile IS acceptable to God! Read it! I recall reading another book which would have had me continue to "take" whatever he dished out as godly submission! I already battled anxiety, depression and other physical ailments the past 6 yrs.- not to mention the physical bruises and a crushed arch!(He shoves hard!) That book didn't reference scriptures nearly as much! MY THANK YOU goes to the only other reviewer... thanks for your caring to take the time to write your review! Your review caused me to order this book through Amazon.... you've been a blessing! May this one also encourage others that this is a very worthwhile book!

This is William Marshall at the top of his form, writing once again about the police officers of Yellowthread Street in British Hong Kong. Chief Inspector Pfeiffer, Inspector O'Yee, and Auden and Spencer are challenged this time by a locked room mystery, a mysterious assignment for O'Yee "from Headquarters", and by a congenial set of brothers who are into fantasy fulfillment as psychotherapy. Marshall skilfully weaves the three stories together; all 3 denouements are superbly done.
I can regularly be seen on the D.C. Metro, when reading a Marshall book, with my eyebrows way up my forehead, as Marshall either turns the tension up yet another notch, or describes some of the most bizarre scenes in crime fiction. This time, my facial muscles hurt from the scene with Spencer and the seagulls. Not to be missed!
Marshall is one part Ed McBain's 87th Street police procedurals, one part Janwillem van de Wetering's Gripstra/De Gijr existential police procedures in Holland and elsewhere, and one part Frederick Forsyth, in terms of the suspense involved. With ingredients like that, how can you miss?

EVERYONE Should Read This Book!

There is nearly as much economic inequality among brothers raised in the same home as in the general population. Further, there is almost as much economic inequality among those who score high on standardized tests as in the general population. Equalizing everyone's reading scores would not appreciably reduce the number of economic "failures." In addition, there is no evidence that school reform can substantially reduce the extent of cognitive inequality, as measured by tests of verbal fluency, reading comprehension, or mathematical skill - school resources does not have an appreciable effect on either test scores or educational attainment. Finally, people who define a good school in terms of its student body are probably wiser than those who define it in terms of its budget.

The "bottom line" is a confirmation of James Coleman's "Equality in Educational Opportunity" conclusion that school expenditures don't matter. Thus, our steadily increasing inflation-adjusted per/pupil education expenditures since then have been wasted.

Inequality : A Reassessment of the Effect of Family and Schooling in America by Christopher Jencks 1972

Leon Todd (leontodd@execpc.com from Milwaukee, WI usa , October 24, 1998

Christopher Jencks, Inequality (1972), noted that it is probably wiser to define a "good" school in terms of student body characteristics than in terms of its budget or school resources. According to Jencks, once a good school starts taking in "undesirable" students (the definition of desirable sometimes pertains to academic, social, or economic attributes), its academic standing automatically declines. He concluded that while an elementary schools' social composition had only a moderate effect on student's cognitive achievement, secondary or high school social composition had a significant effect on achievement. Jencks also concluded that school racial composition had only a small effect on black students' later occupational status. This evidence on racial composition and occupational status is far more convincing than any evidence offered to date supporting the position that expenditures or school resources influence academic achievement.

The type of friends students are likely to make, the values they are exposed to, and satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the school, are all dependent upon the character of the student body. Jencks reanalyzed Coleman's EEOS data, Equality of Educational Opportunity (1966) and also concluded that the achievement of lower class students, both black and white, was fairly strongly related to the socioeconomic level of their classmates as long as the poverty class students were in a significant minority of the school student body. This usually meant that a student's achievement was also related to the race, or more accurately the class, of his classmates, since black classmates tended to be poorer or of a lower SES classmates, and vice versa. Jencks also concluded that when the socioeconomic level of a lower class child's classmates was held constant, however, their race had no relationship to achievement.

This conclusion is consistent with Coleman's argument (1966) that school social class has an effect on academic achievement independent of the individual student's family background. Jencks reported that when race and the economic status of students within schools were controlled for, differences in school policies and resources did Not significantly affect verbal achievement. Black student achievement was found to be even less related to schools' policies and resources than white student achievement. This conclusion was inconsistent with Coleman's findings.

"Family background, "social class," and "economic status" are often used interchangeably by social scientists. This interpretation or confounding of these complex concepts often poses serious problems in terms of the comparability and interpretation of research findings. The term "social class" has been defined in a variety of ways. Disputes about the legitimacy of these term have been many and heated and in the ensuing discourse confounding and confusing.

Some scholars deny the existence of social classes in America. Jencks (1972) stated that: The term family background can itself be somewhat misleading, since differences between families derive not just from differences between neighborhoods, regions, schools, and all other experiences that are the same for children in the same family socioeconomic status. Also, the term family background has various interpretations.

By "family background," Jencks (1972) referred to all the environmental factors that make brothers and sisters more alike than random individuals. "Some of these factors are economic, while some are not." Jencks further stated that there can be great variation in "family background" among children who come from the same social or economic class.

Jencks (1972) estimated that a family's economic status probably correlates about 0.35 with children's test scores. What this means is that the test scores of children whose fathers rank in the top fifth of the occupational hierarchy will on the average be 13 to 15 points higher than children whose fathers rank in the bottom fifth. If family income is used as a measure of SES, the disparity between these two groups will be less than 13 points. Jencks further stated that class differences appear to be greatest for verbal ability and general information. Test of mathematical skills, reading comprehension, and non-verbal ability are less influenced by economic background.

This Bible contains the original Greek text and a literal English translation (with a few paraphrases in parentheses) under the Greek text in the middle column. The New American Standard Bible (NASB) version comprises the left column, and the New International Version (NIV) the right. I have found this text priceless because, if I have a question about what the author meant when he used a specific word, I can see what word(s) another translation, or even the original Greek, uses. Unfortunately, this book contains only the New Testament (not the Old).

Muriel Marshall, long time Colorado Western Slope resident and authoritative author, has done it again. In her incomparable, easy-to-read style, she has written the definitive book about a famous landmark on the Western Slope that the Ute Indians, wise in such matters, called Heaven. Most present day visitors know it a Grand Mesa, reputed to be the world's largest flattop mountain. The book is a well-researched, in-depth look at this 2,000 square mile geological phenomenon. It's all here, the history, the people, the place and events that have made Grand Mesa such a unique place. You will learn there are more than a thousand named places on some 50 U.S. Geological Survey quad maps required to cover its surface. Names such as Condemn It Park, Hell's Kitchen, Dead Man's Gulch and Holy Terror Creek are vividly described and framed in historical perspective. The story of Enos Hotchkiss and his entry into the Uncompahgre Valley is both interesting and factually accurate. The hardships endured by the Utes and early settlers are a reminder of the sometimes unforgiving climate and terrain on this one-of-a-kind treasure. You will visit 300 lakes, walk among the springtime flowers, enjoy summer hiking and fishing, revel in its myriad winter activities, and marvel at its incomparable, colorful autumn. Its all here, the history that is truly sometimes stranger than fiction; the people who struggled to settle, but never really tamed, this formidable obstacle; the vast array of flora and fauna found within its boundaries; and the events that have made Grand Mesa a "heaven" to those fortunate enough to have traversed its terrain. This is destined to be the definitive history of Grand Mesa. It is a comprehensive, well written book that is the hallmark of Marshall. For you readers who have read her earlier works, you know what I mean. For you that have not, well...you are in for a treat. Marshall is as great an asset on the Western Slope as the people and places she writes about. You will never truly know Grand Mesa until you read this book.
