The Girlhood Journeys series, written in the late '90's, is something that I've long wanted to see -- a series of books about kids in different historical periods, that talks about what their life was really like. This book fits the bill perfectly: Juliet is a freeman's daughter in medieval England, and her friend is the manor-holder's daughter. There is an excellent contrast shown between Juliet's lifestyle and that of her friend Marguerite. The book also has an excellent lesson about honesty ... teaching the importance of this value without preaching about it is perfectly executed here.
I'm a reenactor by hobby, and wish that books like this had been available to me when I was a young girl growing up. Parents who want their daughters to have a sense of history while still being entertained by good story lines should definitely investigate the Girlhood Journeys books.

Unfolding Yoga from the Inside

Review Date: 2007-12-04
Of the many translations and commentaries of this classical text of Yoga, this is the one I chose for my students to work with for its accuracy, for its readability and for its practicality. Each sutra includes an exercise to bring the teaching home to as lived experience, rather than just as an intellectual exercise. The continuous translation at the back makes it possible to feel the flow of the text without the intervening commentaries. The translation, of Sutra 1.2, the defining orientation of the whole text, states that it is the cessation of the identification with the fluctuations of consciousness that matters, not the cessation of the fluctuations. Just this perspective is worth the whole book. I highly recommend The Kriya Yoga Sutras of Patanjali to all levels of students and practitioners.

This is a very practical and useful translation of Patanjali. It's thorough in it's analysis of the original text and is extremely helpful in instructing the reader on how to implement and practice the teachings.
If you are a student of Patanjali, this is a "Must Read."

Marshall Govindan's careful translation and commentary takes this book far beyond being just a collection of inspirational and interesting Eastern philosophy. His deep understanding of the yogic techniques intimated by the original text allows him to present this in its proper form: a key to liberating techniques as documented by Patanjali in the Golden Age of Yoga. Careful indexing in English and Sanskrit allows the modern student of Yoga to quickly access passages dealing with specific yogic concepts in English and in Sanskrit. Passages are also indexed to the secret teachings of Babaji Nagaraj (the Great "Babaji of the Himalayas" discussed in Autobiography of a Yogi), making this book a must for students of Kriya Yoga.

"We use Kriya Yoga Sutras of Patanjali as our main source book in our popular Yoga teacher training program.

This type of Yoga Sutras is accessible with a clear translation of sanskrit words with a clear interpretation for the modern student of Yoga. The first book for your study of Yoga is the Yoga Sutras. This book will guide you on a journey that authenticates a Yoga practice amidst a Western cultural boom that largely equates Yoga with stretching exercise only. There is so much more to learn from Yoga and this version of The Yoga Sutras is one good place to guide your journey.

A sweeping overview of Napoleon's Army
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-08
There are many books about Napoleon Bonaparte, and probably even more about his campaigns. "La Grande Armee" is set apart from those works since it focuses on the men who fought and died for Napoleon. Blond makes this apparent from the start and it is an objective that he rarely strays from throughout the book.

The book covers the campaigns of the Grand Army from the thwarted attempt to invade England (1805) to Waterloo (1815.) "La Grande Armee" does an excellent job of delving into the life of the average grunt: the disease, the pillaging, the marches, even the horde of prostitutes that followed in the army's wake. Blond gives due consideration to the many non-French foreigners that filled the Army's ranks, and he gives particular interest to the budding medical corps of the Army.

'La Grande Armee"'s greatest strength are the details it presents: from the tactic of Russian playing dead on the battlefield and then getting up to shoot the advancing French in the backs is hard to ignore. To American readers, the chapters on the Spanish insurgency will be particular interest. Many other books of the era gloss over the Iberian campaign, especially after Napoleon himself later refused to enter Spain in an attempt to rescue the situation. That slow, tortorous defeat experienced by the Grand Army will make any reader wonder if the United States is headed down the same disastorous road in Iraq.

Of course, the famous retreat from Moscow is covered in all of its tragic detail, as is the Battle of Nations, and Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo.

Overall, "La Grande Armee" is an excellent book and one that remains very relevant right to this day!

An outstanding narrative of the Napoleonic era.

Georges Blond takes the reader with Napoleon and his men as they march from Boulogne to Waterloo with a completeness that one would expect from an autobiography. The book describes the day-to-day life and death in the army of the Emperor with all the detail of a conversation with a grizzled veteran at a Parisian café. Mr. Blond provides character sketches of some of the leading historical figures of the time that illustrate motive, desire and fault. His descriptions of the Peninsular War and the retreat from Moscow vividly illustrate the suffering and horrors of war in the Napoleonic era. The author's in depth treatment of the medical services is most enlightening, describing the frightful lot of the wounded in gory detail. The reader cannot avoid having an increased respect for the physicians Rene Desgenettes and Jean Larrey. Touching on the political, personal and military histories of the period, the book provides the reader with a unique vantage point from which they may view battles like Austerlitz and Waterloo in a new light. The descriptions of the campaigns and battles avoid tactical details while providing sweeping descriptions that answer many of the how's and why's of the conflicts events. With the chronology, maps and statistics included in the appendixes, this book will become a valued addition to the library of any student of the Napoleonic era.

I found this book very provocative. The anecdotal comments throughout the book, personal accounts on each campaign and method which the author introduces character sketches as the applicable historical figures come into context were refreshing and enlightening. Despite references to Maps in the appendixes of the book, I found the author's description of tactics and battle movements to be somewhat confusing at times. I was a little disappointed with the amount of attention given to the last years of Napoleon the 1st's reign. All in all, a good, enjoyable read. DPS

Blonde has written a superb tour de force in a style which makes one think you are reading a novel and transports you to the battlefields of the Napoleonic Wars. One learns a plenty of the lot of the common soldier and meets characters such as Murat, Ney and other lesser knowns. All in all a brilliant history without the boring prose of some better known history books!

Each chapter is short and easy to absorb, but the collection provides a powerful set of ideas about how leaders can make innovation happen in their organization, whether it's a business, a nonprofit, or a government.

Some 23 experts on management from academia and the private sector share their ideas on how you can take that bloated bureaucracy and turn it into a nimble and innovative machine. The book offers no quick fixes, as illustrated by the authors' observation that innovation is a culture, and not an event. Of special interest is the included list of practices that squelch innovation. We [...] recommend this book, which was inspired by management science pioneer Peter F. Drucker, for executives and all devoted students of the management arts.

Most collected volumes have a few good essays and then you can take or leave the rest. But all of the essays in this book are more than worth the price of the whole book. I was blown away by the depth of wisdom and insight in this collection. You get Charles Handy, Margaret Wheatley, Clayton Christensen, Jim Collins, and Rosabeth Moss Kanter.

I'm always pressed for time and I loved how each one of these essays offered me something I could use in my daily work. There are so many things that can get in the way of being an effective leader and this book helped me think in new ways and look at my organization-an myself-in a new way.

I get the Drucker Foundation's journal, Leader to Leader, and always get great stuff out of it. This collection met all of the expectations I had of a book from the Drucker Foundation.

Learning Journeys is such a pleasant book to read. This book is personal. It¹s personal essays by some of the great management and business leaders in the world. In the book, these leaders reveal the life-changing events of their lives. There are some sad stories, some funny stories, and some spiritual stories: some of the stories are business-related and some are totally personal. What struck me so much about this book is that it reveals the human side of business, something that is so often forgotten.

As an internal consultant in a very large organization, I was thrilled to find this book and could not put it down until I finished it. Senior leaders are expected to be the fount of all knowledge, work in a high-pressure environment, never lose composure and NEVER let them see you sweat! It is, of course, rare to devote any part of a business day to asking the kinds of questions posed in this book. We are using it as a pilot program for leaders to discuss and discover who they are, rather than just what they do.It has given us an opportunity to talk about the very personal issues that a leader must address, and they have taken to it with great enthusiasm. Finishing this book, you are not left so much with the impression of the "guru's wisdom" as you are left to reflect upon your own wisdom. Great book.

Brief glimpses into the motivations of great leaders

Review Date: 2004-05-10
This is a wonderful book to read, and can be picked up and read through in a sitting or taken in small sections. The book contains 37 two to three page essays by some of the best and most well known of human resources and organizational leaders and pioneers. From Stephen Cover to Dave Ulrich, from Marshall Goldsmith to Robert Eichenger, these individuals have done much to shape current thought in the areas of organizational development and leadership.

The book is divided into eight different categories, including what were in my opinion the most insightful; "Unlearning what you thought was so", "Pain is a great teacher", and "Seeing yourself as others do". What makes this such an interesting read is that all these short essays within the eight topic areas reflect very personal insights into the people themselves. What events helped them learn and grow, what successes, or failures, helped them become who they are today?

We are given a rare glimpse into some very real personal experiences, in which we all can relate on some level. I was struck time and again at just how "normal" these leaders are, and behind the names, the publications, and the prestige of being well known and a leader in your field, are some remarkable stories of struggle and perseverance.

Highly recommended, but not for the organizational wisdom or business tips, but rather for the humanity and depth of the personal testimonies. We can all benefit from the wisdom of others whose own lessons learned can be encouraging and timely regardless of where you may be on your own journey.

Understanding Copyright Law is a well-organized, well-written, surprisingly (for such a relatively compact volume) thorough treatment of U.S. copyright law. Leaffer has a knack for developing just the right points in order to show how the copyright statutes and regulations apply to real examples. The table of contents and index make for easy access to various issues that might come up in a day-to-day copyright practice. I recommend this book be within easy reach of any IP attorney, copyright manager, or even work-originator.

Copyright law, despite the fact that everybody these days claims to understand it and its surrounding issues, is an enormously complex and convoluted subject. You would not be blamed for dreading the study of copyright law, nor any book that claimed to wrap up the topic in one handy volume. It's a rare law book that not only makes use of such an affirmative title, but then actually lives up to it, and Leaffer has provided. After a very well-written introduction, the bulk of this book covers most of the different legal categories included in copyright law, from procedures to remedies to defenses. Leaffer is not afraid to take as much space as necessary to explain some of the law's convoluted provisions, as can be seen in the 100+ page chapter on exclusive rights. Best of all, Leaffer moves beyond the strict letter-of-the-law reductionism of standard law textbooks, and ably introduces many of the social, political, and cultural issues surrounding the modern uses (and misuses) of copyright law. And all of the above is presented in an informative writing style that consciously strives to not be as dry and pedantic as typical law texts. [~doomsdayer520~]

This biography, although scholarly, is entertaining throughout and easily read. Smelser was a life long baseball fan and his love of the game animates every page. As an undergraduate at Notre Dame, I studied under the author. Now deceased, he was a professor of history. Smelser demanded from his students the thorough research he displays in this book. But he was also a wonderful storyteller. Both qualities are apparent in this work. Like the best biographers, the author has only mild affection for his subject. The Babe's qualities and failings get equal attention. But today, when the word "superstar" is wildly overrused, you see the extraordinary level of fame this man achieved. If you really want to understand the Babe's life, read this book.

Some legends are larger than life. Some legends are made up. Then there's Babe Ruth, than man by which all other baseball players are measured, even today. George Herman Ruth comes to life in this riveting, yet easy to read biography by Marshall Smelser.

You follow the bambino from his early days at St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys to his early days with the Boston Red Sox. You read about his turmoil with the fans, his trade to the New York Yankees, that later became the curse of the Bambino.

Smelser's accounts of Ruth's life from his first wife to the run ins with Yankees manager Miller Huggins to the called shot in the 1934 World Series and so many others, will have laughing on minute and on the brink of tears the very next.

I have always been a great Babe Ruth fan; so reviewing this book was a no brainer. Smelser writing style made it easy for me to read along and finally get a true picture of the man so many either loved or hated. I would highly recommend this book to any serious baseball fan!

Like the adult book of the same title, The Light and the Glory for Children examines evidence for America's Christian roots. The authors reveal a past that is not at all smooth. The challenges of settling this land and building a new nation are shown in their harsh reality. Equally, the faith that strengthened the people for these challenges is presented as inspiration for tomorrow's citizens and leaders. Review questions in the back of the book helped my children explore their own values and beliefs about their country. There could be no better way to raise responsible citizens than to have them investigate our Christian heritage through this book.

I thought this book was great, and my mom did also! I told her to read it after I was done, and after she did she said she was glad she did. She said it's good for discussions about God, His plan for our lives, and how we are supposed to live for Him. I liked Cass the best since she's the most like me, but the other characters are great too. What I liked best was that they're just regular kids who are trying to be Christians. They're not perfect and they certainly wouldn't say they're perfect, but they try. My mom likes the mom in the book and says she has good sense!

I would reccomend these books for any teenage girl, probably ages 12-16. The characters are well devoloped and aren't dull but they do tend to act a little bit young for their age

Cassandra Devane's mother had been going out with a former highschool friend, Steve Spencer. Cass' dad had died when she was little and Steve's wife had walked out on him and his daughter Tabitha. Cass and Tabitha did exactly hit it off on good terms and when their parents decided to get married it just made their relationship worse. When Cass found out she had to move to Kwajalien, in the Marshall Islands, she flipped out because she didn't want to leave her friends and family. Steve was a news reporter for the radio company there on the island and had moved there a couple of years eariler. After getting to Kwajalein Tabitha immediately left with her friend Kira. Cass mopped around the house mad at God and her mother and Steve for making her move. Finally after a couple of weeks there, Cass accidentally runs into Tabitha's group of friends. Logan, also a newcomer to Kwajalein, immediately became friends with her. When Cass found out that there wasn't a youth group on the island, her favorite thing back home, she was real upset again. Well, her mom talked to the pastor and got one started. Finally after Tabitha and Cass were both tired of fighting and the power went out they finally spilled why they disliked each other so much. I will let you hang there. I thought this was a really good book because my sister and I fight a lot and it gave me a few tips on how to deal with that. This book can be really funny or it can be serious, but thoughout the book it is a real life situation and has tips about dealing with that kind of stuff.

I found it an enjoyable and thought-provoking read. Jack does a great job of leading readers to reflect on their own lives. Certainly worth the time spent reading it and a must-read for career military officers, active or retired.
