Bottom Line: It's easy reading, it's practical, it's useful. It's not fluff or hype, but it's written by a realist who knows what it takes to be a leader and what it takes to succeed greatly. Not only would I recommend this book, but if I was in charge of things, I would make this a required text for all executives.

hey. i have not read this guide, but i have played and beaten the game. EXTREMELY fun, and pretty challenging. enemy ai isnt enviously great, but it is pretty good. the last, oh, 3 or 4 levels get really HARD so i would recommend this guide. it took me a while to finally get past the last few levels, and i was wishing the whole time for a prima's guide. didnt have one; i really recommend it if u plan on trying to beat this game in a record time or even if you do it in your spare time.
thanx 4 readin this.

Comprehensive review of a misjudged era

This book reveals that the middle ages were not dead time as most think but the beginning of a transition from self sufficiency to taking advantage of comparative advantage by trading with others. Lopez starts out with a review of the Roman world and its commerce, transitions to the impact of the barbarian invasions, and only then turns to the takeoff of commercial growth. He describes key factors in the takeoff as creation of an agricultural surplus, the business acumen of the Jews, the adventurousness of the Italians, the role of coins and credit, the value of contracts, and developments in transportation. Of particular interest to me were his comments on the objects and patterns of trade, the pre-Columbus Italian explorations for trade, and the role of guilds in furthering and hindering economic growth. The book is well written and easy to read. Readers of this book might also want to look at The Medieval Machine by Gimpel; Cathedral, Forge, and Waterwheel by the Gies as well as Life in a Medieval City. Sacred Trust by Ekelund et al economically analyzes the medieval church as a business firm which also illustrates the commercial flavor of the times. slim volume is thick with honesty

For those seeking polished prose or self-referential muck, look elsewhere. 'Constant Reminder' is the anti-pretense. A collection of poems and vignettes written by a Puerto Rican woman (mostly) between her early and late teens, it offers a rare insight into the loves, fears, hates and challenges of a generation we're often only too-willing to relegate to the Generation X dust bin. This is not the whining narrative of suburban angst, but the often ignored, sometimes oppressed voice of a representative of one of the most marginalized sectors of American society, the voice of a young, inner-city (New Haven) woman of color from a single-parent home caught between two cultures (Puerto-Rican and United Statesian).

The shootings, crack-dealers, single mothers and frozen-to-death homeless people who inhabit the opening work, 'The News In Brief,' seem to haunt the rest of the collection, hanging over the world of personal anguish, child-like wonderment and gradual triumph which the author describes like a mini-odyssey. In varied ways, we get to see the author slowly come to understand and conquer herself and her world, and for readers willing to take Ms. Lopez's words at their full value, this trip is as enlightening for those of us on this side of the pen as it so apparently was for the growing woman on the other (albeit certainly in different ways). Dark though some of the works are, they are like pressure valves for the inner city, and we would do well to listen to their whistling.

The works collected in CR are not bleak, but simply unafraid to observe. And herein lies the collection's greatest strength: it's unflinching honesty. Whatever the topic - education, social ills, or her own obituary - the author opens up her gut and shows you what's inside, at times to such an extent that one suspects they might be reading her personal journal. But this, of course, is all to the good, making for an at times ad-hoc but never uninteresting and always disequilibriating collection. Mainstream America needs more of this stuff.

Ms. Lopez (in this, her first of many works to come, we're told in the introduction) hasn't always clearly found her voice, so let the Harold Blooms of this world dismiss CR as they wish, but that's to ignore the point entirely - CR is ABOUT not have a voice, ABOUT growing up lost and being smart enough to understand one's marginalization, but not being entirely sure what to do about it.

If you're interested in something rare, insightful and refreshing, order a copy before it's out of print. CR is worth the wait.

Professor O'Brien must surely be making valuable contributions with his numerous works, and this one should have been most helpful to me. But he or his publisher have opted for pretty, pale grey print -- almost impossible for middle-aged eyes to read without strain. I had ordered five of his books from Amazon and reluctantly returned them all.

This report begins to look at strategies for raising the educational attainment of Latinos in California. The purpose of this paper is not to provide a comprehensive treatise on a particular issue, but rather to get the reader to start thinking about linkages that can occur across the different sectors. We need to not only consider the K-12 and higher education systems, but we must also look to preschools, economic development agencies, the private sector, community based organizations, and any other organization that can work with the community. This paper has 11 different sections and 33 contributors. Some sections include options for further consideration.

I found Bettinger-Lopez's work very impressive, especially considering that the vast majority of her research was conducted for an undergraduate thesis. Bettinger-Lopez clearly spent a great deal of time conducting personal interviews and was able to get "inside" the Cuban-Jewish community. As the daughter of a Cuban-Jewish emigre to the U.S. (to New York) who still has many Cuban-Jewish friends and family members in Miami, I truly enjoyed the author's vivid, detailed portraits of the community. Bettinger-Lopez also provided interesting anthropologic and feminist analysis of the Cuban-Jewish community. I did, however, find one aspect of the book troubling, and that is Bettinger-Lopez's tendency to frequently inject herself and her personal issues into the analysis of the people that she interviews. While this technique is interesting at times, it comes off as mildly self-centered and lacks the detachment required of a primary source researcher. Overall, I recommend the book and especially recommend it to Cuban-Jews and their descendants.
