I could not put this book down until I read it from cover to cover! Judith Lopez has been able to describe through her own story what it is like for many of us who suffer from immune dysfunction of one kind or another. Even though her story is her own, it is representative of my own and of many others I know who suffer from immune illnesses. For example the ups and downs of the illness, how severe they can be, and that it is often difficult to identify what brings on the illness as it can change each time. I recommend this to those who suffer, to their friends and family for a perspective into the world of immune dysfunction. Judith has given us all a great gift!

What a God-send this book has been to me! Although I could not relate to every symptom the author experienced during her long, long battle with Immune Dysfunction, I could certainly relate to the heartbreak and isolation that she felt. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has suffered the immeasurable pain of being so sick that you cannot function and yet having people doubt the validity of the illness from which you suffer on a daily basis. It is an unbelievable phenomenon for those of us who KNOW that something is physically WRONG with us; reading "Immune Dysfunction" will show you that YOU and I are NOT ALONE. Please buy this book, you'll feel better!

Immune Dysfunction: Winning My Battle Against Toxins, Illness & The Medical Establishment is the personal and compelling story of Judith Lopez and her experiences with medical mismanagement and malpractice. Judith documents her struggle with a mystery malady that was life threatening. All the while her doctors sought to discount chronic fatigue syndrome, yeast syndrome, and environmental illnesses as merely sociogenic problems, the result of a mass hysteria or psychosomatic illness. After a twenty year battle with an illness the medical community proclaimed to be non-existent, Judith finally connected with Doctor Vincent Marinkovich, a Stanford professor and authority on clinical immunology and allergy, who was able to understand and treat her symptoms. Immune Dysfunction is a powerful and engaging medical memoir and highly recommended reading for anyone suffering from any form of environmentally generated illness whose physicians are trying to palm off as a form of hysteria or mental illness, as well as medical students, health workers, and practicing physicians concerned with the proper diagnosis and treatment of the rapidly growing numbers of men, women, and children who are experiencing environmentally driven immune system dysfunctions.

What a great surprise this artist is for me! Being predominantly a Marvel fan, there are a number of great DC artists over the years that I've had very little exposure to. In this case, I bought this interview on the strength of the brilliant cover art alone. I'm happy to say the interior work is every bit as good. Unlike my other 2 favorites in the series, this interview includes some color work along with the many pieces of black & white artwork sprinkled throughout. Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez is highly praised with reason: just check out the picture of Superman & Lois flying high over a cityscape complete with rainbow (p.117) to see what I mean. Truly fantastic pencils throughout!

My other current favorites in the series include Modern Masters, Vol. 7: John Byrne (Modern Masters), and Modern Masters Volume 2: George Perez. Yet they keep on releasing great interviews!

Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez is one of comics most under-rated artists. His art is beautiful, graceful and powerful without losing the clear storytelling that makes a good artist great. Just ask almost anyone in the business, Garcia-Lopez is a class act and the only thing wrong with this book is it could be longer, packed with even more art.

Eric Nolen-Weathington has made a great career of insightful interviews with his Modern Masters series, and I'd recommend, even if your not a big fan of the artist, Eric always brings out a side you'd never suspect. He does his homework and lets the artists speak, Nice job.

I guess the two words that come to mind when I think about comic book artist Jose Luis Garcia Lopez are consistent and underrated. Those two words seem to best describe the career of a man who rarely has gotten the accolades he deserves as one of the great artists of the last 25 years. After reading the lengthy interview with him in this volume five of the Modern Masters series from TwoMorrows Publishing, certainly Jose's humble and quiet nature seems to be one of the reasons he is so underrated. He's clearly a guy who isn't looking for the spotlight. He hasn't tried to match the younger artists of the day by doing books filled with nothing but splash pages and poor anatomy. He's just been content to be a dependent workhorse for DC comics. While Jose may not have achieved the level of stardom that other artists have, you get the feeling that it really doesn't matter to him. There's a lot of laughter throughout the interview and Jose seems very happy with his career.

Jose was born in Spain but moved to Argentina with his family when he was very young. He would get his America comic book start with Charlton on mainly romance titles. Jose's many eclectic influences are certainly a factor behind his level of professionalism. From old masters Alex Raymond and Hal Foster, to modern artists like Moebius and Ross Andru, and to great illustrators like Norman Rockwell, Jose relates just how each of these men as influenced his work through the years.

Jose would start at DC in the late 1970's and worked on a variety of projects. Jose did much of the art for DC's merchandising and marketing campaigns including their "Got Milk?" ad featuring Superman. Jose was also the artist who worked on DC's first graphic novel Star Raiders. Interviewer Eric Nolen-Weathington does a wonderful job covering Jose's very diverse career in comics, even getting into the mediums in which Jose likes to work in and his preferred types of tools which is invaluable advice for aspiring comic artists. My personal favorite was the work he did on the Deadman limited series and kudos to TwoMorrows for reprinting some of the work inside this book.

The interview runs through the first three-quarters of the book. The last part is dedicated to a Jose Luis Garcia Lopez art gallery displaying numerous sketches, finished works, covers, and pages from throughout his distinguished career. There's a fantastic drawing of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark sitting on Santa's lap, sketches and color guides from the Cinder & Ashe limited series and two brilliant illustrations, one featuring Wonder Woman and another with Superman and Lois Lane.

Hats off to TwoMorrows Publishing for aiming the spotlight on this humble, under-appreciated talent!

Giong Deeper into the Pain through WInter to Spring

This book is a psalter for anyone who has ever experienced chronic pain and a metaphor for transformation for those who have not. Lopez, desperate for relief from pain following surgery that would not heal, sought the advice of a body-centered healer, who told her the only way he knew to relieve pain was by going deeper into it. Reading, browsing and rereading Lopez' book takes us to the place where boundaries merge and the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies are one. Thus, it reminds us that WE are ONE and describes for us in poetry and metaphor, the mystical and ecstatic experience of atonement (at-one-ment) and healing. The book is beautifully written and elegantly illustrated. Like pain itself, it can become a companion to trust and walk with upon occasion for there is much to learn in these liminal lands.

I don't normally take the time to write reviews - but there are so many reasons I could have for loving this book!

The thing which hit me first was the incredible quality of the illustrations. They are simply beautiful (stunningly so), yet they also capture something of the Artist's unique insight into symbolism and colour theory.

As for the poetry itself, it is of the highest quality. Having spent the last year studying various mythological traditions (I am an English student at the University of Sydney) I enjoyed seeing how the author was able to build upon the tradition of the psalms as well as a wealth of other signs and symbols (helpfully explained in an appendix). Yet more than that, I appreciated how much of her soul the author leaves vulnerable in the process - this is art of the best kind: honest, beautiful and clear.

The Once and Future Blacksmith Warrior
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-27
Part of the Elseworlds series that D.C. began as a way to keep interest in their comics, SUPERMAN: KAL imagines a world where Kal-el (aka Superman) crash lands in the Dark Ages of Europe instead of 20th Century America. Adopted by two childless farming peasants, it is apparent from an early age that Kal has super abilities. His adopted father fears possible burning for witchcraft and has Kal promise that he will hide his abilities from others. Yet, the brute strength of the boy cannot be ignored and when Kal is a young man he is recruited by the local blacksmith to work in his forge. Kal immediately finds the city life in Lexford to be very different from life in the country. But Kal seems to adjust well and prospers under the tutelage of blacksmith Olls. However, Kal's life changes forever when he sees the fair Lady Loisse at a tournament held by Baron Luthor. Kal sets forth to win Lady Loisse's heart and hand, even if means fighting against the evil Baron Luthor and his eerily green gem necklace.

SUPERMAN: KAL doesn't unfold the way one might expect. Instead the story follows the pattern of classic romance literature, e.g. Morte D'Arthur or Ivanhoe. The story is well-crafted by the pen of Dave Gibbons (artist of WATCHMEN) and beautifully illustrated by the hand of Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez. The story is told by Kal's old friend and even includes an ending that ties the tale to other famous romantic stories.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of the Elseworlds stories, I do enjoy the occasional "what if" yarn. Among the Superman Elseworlds stories, KAL is one of the better ones around. It's a great item for Superman fans and especially for Superman fans who have any interest in medieval/fantasy literature.

Kal, A Love Story of Kal and Loisse
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-12
Set in feudal England (it's an Elseworld book), Kal's love, Loisse, is claimed by Baron Luthor as lord's first night privilege (I felt you should know this is a wrenching story for people who are too young). It is a beautiful story until then, set in a magical time. And it is told and drawn and colored beautifully throughout.

The story mirrors the traditional Superman story in several ways. Baby Kal was found by a farming couple, in a silver rocket pod. The childless woman cooed over the baby, "fresh laid by 'Eaven ... in a silver egg." As you would expect, Kal grew to a fine manhood, stronger than a bull (as can be attested to by the bull), and true of heart. When his heart is twined with the lovely Lady Loisse's, the baron's "ward" (but in reality his captive ever since her father, the town's Protector Lord Layne, was murdered), the stage is set for a wrenching final act.

The story is written very touchingly by Dave Gibbons. It is a wonderful tale, told in remembrance by Kal's friend. The story does not pound ahead pell-mell, skipping about in jarring scene changes, as some do. It gives you time to know the people and savor the story as it is laid out, but it does not lag; it gripped my attention without a thought of pausing part-way. Will Kal the farmer's son make a good blacksmith? What will happen when Lord Luthor demands armor from Kal, still an apprentice, that cannot be pierced by ANYTHING? For you fight-scene addicts, there are tournaments of jousting and strength, and clashes with the Baron's armored men, and finally it is Kal vs Luthor. And for you romanticists, there is the classic fall-in-love-at-first-sight story: Kal and Loisse are meant for each other.

The art, by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, is supreme, in what I think of as the classic style for Superman, very fine in execution, not at all cartoonish; leaning toward realism, but not so much as to be a wrong style for a comic book. Kal is appropriately strong and handsome, and you can read expression in his beautiful gray-blue eyes. Loisse, though not having "the look" I expect for Lois, is drawn very nicely, beautiful, but not demure - is she ever? The colors are in tune with what you might expect for that dark period of history, except brighter, not dark and murky; actually just bright enough to be called pretty, but no more than that, which is appropriate, because truly beautiful colors would not suit the story. This is the first book where I've realized how much influence the coloring has on the reader.

This is a wonderful story, where the story and art come together as if from the same hand. I'm sure you will love it.

An aside from the story: this book is listed as having unknown binding; mine has the typical TPB (Trade Paper-Back) square-spine paperback cover.

And now . . back to the story . . what will become of Kal's sword? Oooh - Kal has a sword? Read "Superman: Kal" to find out! I'm sure you will enjoy it, including you ladies. ;)

The best Superman story you've never read

What if young Kal-el landed in England during the Dark Ages instead of 20th century America? That idea is the basis of this Elseworlds one-shot, written by Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons and drawn beautifully by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez. The story unfolds tragically as we see young Kal grow older, discover his otherworldly abilities, fall in love with fair maiden Lady Loisse, and eventually take on Baron Luthor who wields a mysterious green glowing gem around his neck which makes Kal sick anytime he is near it. Gibbons' storytelling is almost mythic, and by the time you get to the final page, everything comes full circle making this one of the finest Superman stories ever told, and one that you've probably never heard of let alone read. If you can find this, pick this up, it's a masterpiece.

Rest easy by the fire, and I'll tell you Kal's story

One of the finest Superman stories ever published. The writing by Dave Gibbons is mythic and the art work and design by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez is magnificent. Even the cover makes it look like a leather-bound illuminated manuscript.

What if Kal-el had landed in England during the Dark Ages instead of America in the 20th century? That is the heart of this tale, as told by James son of Olls. It is the story of a child fallen from heaven and found by simple peasants- peasants that must hide his powers lest there be talk of witchcraft. Then one day, the young Kal would travel to Lexford, stronghold the the black Baron Luthor and his ward, the fair Lady Loisse. The result reads more like a Shakespearian tragedy than a comic book.

It all makes sense really, for who else could drive a sword through a stone with his dieing strength?

How true this writing is. The animals are being forced out of their natural habitat to make room for humans.
I have no doubt that Andrea's experiences go well beyond what she has written about, even as a child. She has made it clear that co-existing is possible without much effort on our part.
BE PREPARED! Where have we all seen those words written before?
Although "common sense" is not all that "common", I think this book makes clear to all of us what we can do to make our lives and the lives of the animals a much safer place.

Ms. Lopez gives us a work that is thorough in its research and skillfully crafted. The reader is unobtrusively drawn in by a warmth that results from the author's personal interviews with many of the informants. The African American athletes and the University of Houston Coaches become so much more than a record of facts about racial integration; each person has a unique story set against a common backdrop of the cultural and historical context of the South. The facts are threaded with stories, thoughts, reports and comments that reveal the humanity, the courage, the tenacity and the passion of all involved. A book that will appeal to many across diverse disciplines and not just sports fanatics ! ASIN:0786437219 Cougars of any Color: The Integration of University of Houston Athletics, 1964-1968]]

This product is fantastic! It's not a book for the light weight as it is physically heavy to hold. However due to its enormous size, it means you get to see all Rivera's amazing detail close up.

The commentary is interesting and informative about the history and politics that influenced Rivera's art. Seeing the vast number of murals he painted in his lifetime in one book, makes one appreciate his skill and patience.

My one criticism - the excessive packaging by Amazon. It arrived in a massive box full of plastic - this really was unnecessary and I hope Amazon will reduce the amount of packaging it uses.

I own several books on Diego Rivera, this new Taschen book is the only one I'd ever need. It's HUGE with to start with, then it has nearly poster sized fold-out illustrations, beautifully crisp close ups of his murals (yes, all of them). The book also includes some of his easel paintings, although the emphasis is on his mural work plus preliminary drawings. If only there was such a book on the rest of my favorite painters, this one is a milestone in art-book publishing, period. Like it's tailor made for artists, and a bargain at the price.

Taschen's XL art series is wonderful in it's own right but this just might be the best they've yet produced. This enormous tome is superb in it's execution. The picture quality is the absolute best and several of the murals are presented as foldouts allowing the rich colorful images to pop off the page. Copious amounts of information, including photos and diagrams are included to give the history and make-up of the pieces even more depth. If you have the money and the space this is the best book on Rivera that you will find.

We are heavy users of our public library, and it is the rare book that my son loves enough for us to buy, but this one qualifies. He absolutely loves this book. We have read it repeatedly. The pictures are great, and text is simple and repetitive enough for young children. We highly recommend this book.

Great book for reading readiness...

This is a great beginning reader for children who have an interest in everyday jobs. Colorful illustrations of various "Matchbox" vehicles in action will keep a child's interest. See snow plows, construction vehicles, truckers, street sweepers and more in action. Simple repitition and a variety of vowel sounds are beneficial.
