This is THE wonderfully written and well researched book from the time of the centennial of what was the largest, though often overlooked, battle of the American Revolution: The Battle of Brooklyn or The Battle of Long Island. From lead-up, the relating of the battle, and the aftermath it is probably the best overall and most readable such book it has been my pleasure to read and own a reprint of. Whilst not perfect, it is close to it, and has been invaluable when it includes the original large maps as a resource for my studies and trips I've guided.

A very complete and accessible guide to cancer

This book tells you what cancer is; what the pros and cons are with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy; what the other new mainstream treatments are; why cancer research is failing and what the alternative therapies are that many people are doing - often with great success: the additional diagnostic tests you might want to consider; the detox regimes; the diets, herbs, vitamins, supplements and other approaches that have helped. And it tells you about the pioneers that have been vilified despite anecdotal reports of success - and so on. This book aims to provide a complete picture of the world of cancer. And it does so without hectoring or vilifying people who hold different opinions. It recognises that we are all different and will make different choices. I should declare my own interest in this book. I am the author and I researched this book as a result of my wife dying from cancer (and from the direct effects of the treatment she submitted to). I vowed that I would not go the same way - but I needed to know what the options were. This book was written above all to inform myself. In the book I tell the stories of over a dozen people who recovered from their cancers using alternative approaches - and they used different approaches so I think it is fair to say there are dozens of cures for cancer - but you can't do them if you don't know what they are. And this book is written to be accessible. One reader wrote to me: " I devoured the entire [book] in one sitting. As I read hope grew and grew. I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. You gave us hope when all we could see was despair and you gave us a path when we thought all was lost. "

I wish I would have known about this book over five years ago when my father first became ill and my mother, then 79, started the long process of taking care of him before he died last August. Not living in the same area I could only imagine how difficult it must have been for her. It would have been reassuring to know that what she was doing to support my father were the right things. Oftentimes the outstanding efforts of those who care for the dying are not appreciated. Instead they frequently feel guilty that they have not done enough. I can honestly say my mother did the best job she (or anyone for that matter) could have done to help her dying husband.
The title of the book is so appropriate too and the respect and sensitivity the author has for the dying cannot be overstated. The chapter titles themselves speak of the rights that dying individuals have such as the Right to Be In Control, The Right to Have a Sense of Purpose, The Right to Know the Truth, The Right to be Comfortable, The Right to Touch and Be Touched, The Right to Laughter, The Right to Cry and Express Anger, The Right to Explore the Spirtual and The Right to Have a Sense of Family.
It is only now, ten months after my father's death, can I deeply appreciate how much my mother respected my own father's rights. For instance, however painful it was for all of us to see my father pass away in a hospital bed in his home, it was HIS wish to die at home surrounded by family members who loved him with all our hearts. Even though he had a "regular job" he held for many years, my father enjoyed painting abstracts in his off time. When EMS delivered him to his home, one of the last times he opened his eyes was to see his canvases surrounding him in his living room. It was one of the last times this gregarious man smiled. (The last time was the following day just four days before he went to be with the Lord. My brother and I had the privilege of seeing his eyes for the last time). In another instance, my mother respected how deeply religious my father was and had a priest come visit him in the hospital to give him last rites. I had been in the hospital before when priests came to visit my father and had seen how comforting that was for him. I knew this final time meant a great deal to him.
I found this book to be written very much in touch with helping caring family members as well as for hospice staff that might visit someone in his home. Many people are not aware that hospice workers do not just take care of dying people in hospice centers. There is home based care available also and these people are like ministering angels. They took such loving care of my father in his final days.
As a social worker of 29 years I would recommend this book not only to family members but to helping professionals who work with the dying such as social workers, nurses, doctors, chaplains, doctors, etc. It is a Godsend!

This is a "Must Have" for any serious Case Classics collector. A separate supplemental Price Guide dated 2001 is also necessary to learn all of the 36 patterns of the Case Classics.
There is no other publication with information about the story of Jim Parker and his dreams that tells the history, birth and the introduction of the Case Classics.
This is a totally comprehensive guide to the world of collecting these beautiful hand made knives with pictures and production quantities, as well as, many prototypes and low run quantities...
Jim Parker, former owner of WR Case & Sons, will be remembered for many great things, but the Case Classics, Best in the Long Haul, will be one of his best...

Two of Erle Stanley Gardner's Best
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-23
Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970) wrote more than one hundred novels over the course of his long career. A trial lawyer himself, Gardner's best known creation was Perry Mason, a flamboyant criminal defense attorney who earns his large fees by virtue of a remarkable talent for using the law to uncover the truth on the witness stand.

Although Gardner's Perry Mason novels were formula, Gardner was at the peak of his powers during the 1950s--and at his best he was able to combine a twisty plot, impressive courtroom scenes, and his tendency to staccato dialogue to tremendous effect. This "double header" volume contains two of his best: the 1957 THE CASE OF THE LONG-LEGGED MODELS and the 1958 THE CASE OF THE FOOT-LOOSE DOLL.

THE LONG-LEGGED MODELS presents us with Stephanie Falkner, an attractive young woman and sometimes model who has inherited a chunk of stock in a small Las Vegas casino from her father--but her father was murdered, the crime was never solved, and now a very unsavory person is after her share of the casino. Could her father's death and this attempted buy-out be connected? Stephanie goes to Mason for help, and it isn't too long before a second murder comes her way.

Like LONG-LEGGED MODELS, THE FOOT-LOOSE DOLL is the story of a woman in trouble--in this case Mildred Crest, an attractive secretary from Oceanside, California who was looking forward to marriage to the town's most eligible bachelor. But when Mildred's boyfriend abandons her under shocking circumstances, she wanders off the beaten track in more ways than one... and
an unforeseen accident offers her the opportunity to escape the past once and for all. But the past has a way of catching up with you--and in Mildred's case it isn't just her own past that she has to worry about. Before too long the question of murder arises, and Mildred finds herself in desperate need of legendary Los Angeles attorney Perry Mason.

Both these novels find Gardner at his best. Written in a workman-like and driving manner, they are fast and furious reads, the perfect way to spend a rainy day. Recommended to fans and newcomers alike.

Jack Long is, for me, a master of horticultural crime, and his latest work, "The Case of the Missing Lettuce" is up there with some of the classics of the genre. I'm talking about such masterpieces as Agatha Christie's "Miss Marple and the Mystery of the Misshapen Marrow", Polanowski's "One of our courgettes is missing", and of course Conan-Doyle's seminal "Sherlock Holmes and the stolen carrots".
In "The Case of the Missing Lettuce" the reader is kept guessing as to the whereabouts of the crispy-leafed vegetable right up until the final page - and the tension that has built up over the previous 8 pages is almost unbearable. Was it Jones, the farmer? Was it Bill Binkley, the loveable greengrocer? Or was it Mrs. Smith, the sprightly, love-lorn pensioner? If you don't buy this marvellous book, those questions will haunt you for the rest of your life. Buy it now. Now!

As a social worker and PWA --I have seen the effects of not planning or even worse not utlizing a benefit wisely.I have benefited not only from the financial planning advice that Ms. Wolk has offered --as well as the peace of mind that maximizing the use of assess such as life insurance to bring joy (a few trips, nice dinners) to the life which is deserved when facing the uncertainties of terminal diseases. the old science writers axiom:There are two headlines in medical reporting, "Drug X found to have highly effective in treating blank disease"and "Drug X found to cause...severe side effects and ....other horrible things. The war is not over why die poorer than you need to.
