I used this book in a college American literature class. It has tons of short stories and full text of a few novels. I forget which are the full text novels aside from "Huck Finn." One thing I like about this book is that it's diverse: it has the "traditional" American literature, but it also includes Richard Wright, Alice Walker, James Baldwin, etc. There are also really helpful footnotes that aide in understanding.

Superstitions in the Middle East
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-12
By Sir Budge, (1857-1934), curator of the Egyptian Antiquities in the British Museum, who also translated the "Egyptian Book of the Dead." From the book's preface: "I have described the principal amulets which were used by the Semitic peoples of Western Asia, Egypt, Nambia and Ethiopia. I have added a series of short chapters in which I have tried to set forth the principal theories about the powers of 'working' amulets, and the meaning of the inscriptions and symbols inscribed on them, and to indicate the beliefs concerning them which were held by the ancient Babylonian and Egyptian magicians, and by the later Kabbalists, Gnostics, both pagan and Christian, and astrologers. And I have incorporated in the many of the views of the astrologers, makers of horoscopes, casters of nativities, diviners, crystal gazers, palmists and fortune-tellers with who I came in contact in Egypt, the Sudan and Mesopotamia." The author discusses: the Evil Eye, and amulets used by: Arabs, Persians, Babylonians, Coptics, Egyptians, Abyssinians, Gnostic, Hebrew, Mandaeen, Phoenician, Samaritan, Syriac; the Ring amulet; beliefs concerning Divination by water or animal's livers or sand; the Hand of Fatima; Babylonian demon Humbaba, god Khepera, Rd, Thoth; the Seven Seals; and much, much more. Many photographs and illustrations. Originally published in 1930; paperback in 1978.

a great summary of the anarchist/limited government debate
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-19
The articles in this book give an up to date summary of the anarchist/limited government debate among libertarians that has been going on since the late 60's.
I found the objectivist oriented articles to be superb, both William R. Thomas's summary and elaboration of Objectivist responses to the anarchist critique and Adam Reed's theoretical and empirical study of market anarchism. Particularly interesting was Reed's history of the Polish/Lithuanian Commonwealth which approximated competing defense agencies, and their inability to protect their clients' rights against infringement by other agencies.
This is a well worth addition to the debate.

Illustrates revolutionary tactics at subverting a democracy
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-04
This political tract book outlines Marxist revolutionary tactics at subverting a democratic parliamentary government. Thus, making a 'legal' change to a social democracy which then erodes into a socialist totalitarian dictatorship. This book illustrates the 'legal' transitional communist takeover of Czechoslavakia without a shot fired. This is strikingly similar to the Hitler-led NSDAP takeover of Germany in the 1930's.

This book should serve as a cautionary warning of how democracy can be subverting and how the constitutional checks and balances of the American Republic serve as a protection against this subversion (assuming that there preserved and not subverted.) Although, it is a little expensive for a book under a 100 pages, it is nonetheless informative.

A perfect follow-up for a visit to Ecuador
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-11
Upon the recommendation of the owner of the mountain lodge where we stayed in Otavalo, Ecuador, I ordered Andean Entrepreneurs following our return home. Lynn Meisch has written a highly readable book about the people and commerce of that region, well-researched and full of interesting detail. It is warm and human, reflecting her love of the OtavaleƱos, with whom she lived for long periods of time. It was fascinating to learn so much about the music, the style of dress, customs, families, entrepreneurial spirit, and long-standing skill with weaving and textiles among these kind people with whom I had enjoyed an interesting visit. This book will be quite valuable for anyone contemplating a visit to Ecuador, or who has returned from time spent there.
