Joel Long is an amazing writer. His work avoids the didactic traps into which too many authors and poets fall, focusing instead on real images that carry their own emotional weight. After reading the book, or even one poem for that matter, the reader is held in awe by a man whose talent and insight far exceed that typically seen on today's literary scene. Long's poems are written in a way that make them accessible to the beginner without destroying the art of the poem. In fact, the talent with which this book was written far exceeds that which I have seen recently. He follows on the footsteps of poets such as Roethke, masterfully using language to show and not tell. He offers us in this volume a living testimony that good poetry is alive and well. From the helplessness inspired by "Beating the Shark" to the simple joy of "Slow," all of the poems in this work are sure to inspire a heavy emotional response from the reader. Simply put, it is poetry like this that teaches us what it is to live. Long has the vitality and exuberance of Whitman and the literary prowess to convey that love of life to the reader. If this book is any indication of things to come, we will be hearing from Joel Long for quite some time. Speaking for myself, I earnestly hope that that is the case.

Joel Long is an excellent writer. I am one of his creative writing students, and I never realized how talented he was until I read this book. I started reading the title page and couldn't put it down until I was finished with his "about the author" page in the back. When I was finished reading it, I was emotionally drained because of all the emotion he put into his poems. His writing is full of concrete languge and imagery. This is writing that anyone can appriciate and enjoy. Joel Long has created real-life scenes that are easy to relate to and feel strong emotion to. The poems are very personal and direct. You will enjoy reading this book!

This is the easiest way to find linear, non-linear, integer and non-integer solutions to sticky business problems. This makes Excel look very compicated in comparison. I recommend this to anyone with multiple business constraint situations. Just lock, load, and solve.

This book is a treasure! Any woman lucky enough to come into contact with it will marvel at its simple innocence and undoubted validity. Murray Oxman addresses the whole spectrum of one's life -- social, psychological and spiritual -- straight on, in plain words and vivid glimpses of reality. Yet all so charmingly!
It's short, simple, right to the point, practical, fun! Mr. Oxman sure has a unique and authentically helpful viewpoint on so many different aspects of life, relationships and spiritual psychology.
The book spans the difference in ages. Revealing for the younger woman, healing for the older one. (Men, too!) Every item on every page has the power to encourage, redeem and transform.
Good, light humor comes up in these marvelous little guideposts for happy relationships and a happy life. Yet it is always pointing at truths we usually overlook in ourselves and others.
This book reveals so much. The right order in the universe, the right basis for enjoying life and other people. The right way to break the cycle of pain and heartache. The right time to live and love -- Right Now!
Ah! Here's the last of the over one hundred healthy guides -- so inspiring. Time to start reading the book all over again. Happily it is the right size to fit in my purse.
Please treat yourself to this little handbook -- a marvelous lifetime friend!

Wonderful Wisdom In A Nutshell

I first came upon this booklet in the Phoenix Store at the Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur, California. I bought two copies, one for my lady traveling companion and one for myself. I read it that evening before going to sleep. The booklet comprises over a hundred numbered statements which I found to be extraordinarily and profoundly wise. You may not agree with every statement but they will give you pause and they will make you think. The booklet is not politically correct (as the author states) and I agree, but the thoughts expressed are closer to the bone and to the truth than a lot of other books that are far longer and much denser, and that purport to be received wisdom. Mr. Oxman is an advocate of the lean writing school, so he is easy to read. I am not sure how he was able to write such a wonderful booklet but I am glad he has. This booklet should be read widely by men and women of all ages and backgrounds. The author has something to say to everyone. I have bought and given away almost seventy copies to friends and acquaintances. I have it as a personal goal to read it once or twice a month.

Yesterday or Long Ago
Poems by Wiley Clements

Illustrations by Jeanette Sloan Campbell

Design and Typography by Robert Ward
Published by Clock and Rose Press

When a deeply respected poet publishes an anthology late in life
one hopes for something as wise, human and unpretentious as this collection of poems by Wiley Clements. The poems are without exception musical and economical. His deep scholarship and wide experience are evident but never flaunted. He combines a lightness of touch with a real depth of understanding. He never wastes words but finds the right ones. He is humorous, tragic and philosophical. Even those who seldom read poetry would find delight and entertainment in this collection of poems.

There is no orating or moralising but respect for life's beauty, cruelty and idiosyncracy. He writes from experience of the mindlessness of war and with restrained poignancy of his wife's loss of memory. He frequently recalls friends and foreign places that have marked him in some way.

The theme of a longer poem in memory of a friend, "Gordon Dunham" might recall some tragedy by E. A Robinson.

Some poems are collaborations with his friend, the Irish poet Jim Hayes.

Wiley Clements's enjoyment of poetic form is always subordinate to the poem's content. His historical imagination is as vivid as his boyhood memories.

To read the poems of Wiley Clements is to savor the pleasure of words and to meet a mind we would be poorer to have missed. Better than a good poetry book--it is a good book.

An extra pleasure is Robert Ward's fine design and layout which enable the reader to glide through the poems with no impediment and a great deal of pleasure.

I have now carefully read through Yesterday, or Long Ago, and I cannot commend it highly enough. Understand this is Wiley Clements, and that you will be stepping back into a sequence of lyrics which celebrate traditional values, redolant at times of magnolias, poems which employ inversion and the subjunctive with equal ease. I am struck by how many of these verses were written recently. Mr. Clements is 78, and the winged chariot is hurrying nearer Wiley than most of us. I occasionally have the sense that some of the newest poems were committed to flesh out this large book with undue haste. But 35 years his junior, I have world enough and time. The overwhelming sense of the book, though, reflects Dick Davis' comment on Cavafy where he talks about the sweetest poetic sensibility among modern masters. Wiley's book can be infinitely hard-nosed, but it evokes with heart-rending accuracy a civility whose passing he laments in the high, elegiac fashion this lifelong student of poetry has made his own.

This commentary is so much easier to read than most I have come across. Dr. Long focuses on the literary dimension of 1&2 Kings in a way that brings the entire story to life! I am using this book in my Old Testament Historical Literature class, and it is incredible! It is so exciting to read the connections between the stories in Kings and other stories in the rest of the OT; you will see Bible characters in ways you never have before! If you would like to start reading in the Old Testament and would like a commentary you can understand to help guide you through the stories - this is the book for you!

Like many people I saw a movie first. Naturally due to media constraints, you expect certain amount of the book to be homogenized. So I wanted to read what was missing. To my amazement very little was missing or modified. I don't normally read this sort of book. So I was surprised at finding myself wanting more when it finished.

Also until I read the book I did not realize that Charing Cross Road was a real place. The whole book is based on a collection of correspondence between Helene Hanff, an avid book reader, and Frank Doel an agent for British bookseller.

My wife has taken this one step further and is collecting all the books that were mentioned in the correspondence. Some of these books appear to have been reprinted due to this publication.

If you can find it there is a book called "The Library of Helene Hanff."
I wonder what became of all the other people described in the correspondents after the book.
