Long Books

When I started to experience severe panic & anxiety attacks 3 years ago I went and bought myself a dozen of books on this topic (anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD) and through the years they all helped me in one way or another, but two stand out and I honestly think I could not do without them. They are Overcoming Anxiety, by Reneau and The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook, by Edmund J. Bourne. As other reviewer mentioned, this book focuses inclusively on cognitive-behavioral treatment of anxiety disorders, which is a highly effective method for medium- to long- term recovery but it does not address the short- term control of anxiety symptoms in as much depth as Bourne's does. Still, I highly recommend it.

This is the perfect companion volume to Peurifoy's previous book: "Anxiety, Phobias and Panic". This book deals with achieving long term recovery, which does not mean the complete absence of anxiety symptoms but the successful management of them. The concern is not just temporary relief or superficial "band-aid" solutions. It describes anxiety as being a "messenger", telling you that you have a problem or life issue that needs to be resolved. The focus is entirely on cognitive-behavioral therapy, NOT medication. It details three levels of recovery: Level 1: Basic Symptom Control, Level 2: Advanced Symptom Control, Level 3: Long Term Recovery. By examining childhood issues and the "roots" of the highly anxious personality, one develops their answer for "why" they suffer from the disorder. The book then guides you through a program for developing skills to manage distressing bodily symptoms, changing distorted thinking patterns which contribute to anxious feelings, progressive desensitzation for phobic sitautions, and changing and enhancing self-image. Attention is given to the detours and setbacks that are often a part of the road to recovery. This approach to the treatment of anxiety is not new, but the book is very well mapped out and provides a comprehensive program that can be utilized by individuals, therapists or groups. It is one of the best books on the cognitive-behavioral treatment of anxiety disorders that I have encountered.

Great book to read to better understand options available for working parents. The chapter discussing legal issues relating to part-time/full-time is especially helpful. Plan to keep as a reference.

As a former Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Assistant Director of the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment,I have long been conversant with the issues addressed in Dr. Atkinson's book. I find myself in complete agreement with his basic thesis and believe he has articulated it so effectively and done such a prodigious job in assembling evidence from so many disparate sources, while delineating specific actions to promote productivity growth for a more humane economy, that I consider it a classic guide for America's 21st Century.

One of the best explanations of the New Economy I've read. Dr. Atkinson has written a readable economics book (no mean feat!) which explains and applies the work of Joseph Schumpeter, an economist people talk about but do not read.

As a professional in public policy, I find his recommendations innovative and challenging, and, above all, his explication of the New Economy clarifies why the 21st Century presents great progressive opportunities

I was looking for a good book to learn concepts on patent-searching, and this book--after a long search--satisfied my need. This book explains theoretical concepts behind patent searching and analytics, tells how to extract ideas from forward and backward citation, and pros-and-cons of online databases. I have read some books from NOLO, but they teach about online tools only, and such tools are obsolete by the time of finishing reading the book. This is the only book to go for as of March 2008.

I bought this book on a whim, thinking that as an experienced patent searcher for over 10 years, it wouldn't teach me anything. I WAS WRONG! This book is very well organized and will be useful to the novice as well as the experiences searcher. I actually learned a number of useful techniques and tools and am recommending this book to my colleagues. Finally, a book that has pertinent complex information in one place for easy reference. Mr. Hunt is to be congratulated for his unambiguous writing style and format. Kudos to Amazon for letting me know it was available. Thanks.

Patients Pain & Politics: Nursing Home Inspector's Shocking True Story & Expert Advice for You and Your Family

Having gone through a Nursing Home death recently I wish I had read this book earlier.

In my case it was not as horrible as what the author had seen but it would have helped me to be more aware of situations which I saw and dismissed. I was too trusting.

I recommend this book highly for anyone who has family in a Nursing Home or is in the process of having someone moving to one. The issues the author covers could save the life of your loved one..You will know what to look for.

Unfortunately, the horrors described were all too common in many Homes and God only knows what is going on now..

This is truly a lesson in what to expect should you become a patient in a nursing home. The truth is painful but better than ignorance. A great fast reading expose.

If you are interested in cats, previously had Persians, have Persians now or are thinking about getting a Persian cat this is the book for you.

This is the absolute best book on Persian cats out there. Unsurpassed in its wealth of information - especially about breeding and colors. Hundreds of lovely pictures (both color and black/white). Anything you want to know about Persian cats is in here.

Jeanne Ramsdale bred chinchilla Persians (also called silver Persians) under the prefix - or cattery name - 'Dearheart'. Her cats were magnificent and to this day stand out for their exceptional beauty. Just to see the photos of these cats - the book is well worth buying.

Jeanne Ramsdale's love for the Persian cat is obvious throughout - the book is well written and always interesting. She writes knowingly about all aspects of cat care and breeding.

Most of the photos are from the 1960's and 1970's - so this book is also a great historical record about the Persian cat.

The 1976 edition is recommended - it comes in a revised edition with nice sturdy binding.

The author is my great-auntie on my mother's side. She was a grand woman of her time.She was well known through the cat world. This book was written about most of her own cats and experiences throughout her life as a cat breeder. Her husband, Dr.P.N.ramsdale,was a well known veternarian in Long Beach, CA,also helped to write the 3 books she had published. They were fascinating people. I sure miss them. They both tragedly passed away almost 15 years ago. Great information books...

This book was not required but highly recommended by my professor for my class. It's worth the money. Easy to read and understand. Get this book if you want to learn about nutrition (whether in a nutrition class or not) in a clear and understandable manner!

This book is a must have. It dispells myths and has current up-to-date information on diets, using sugar sweetners (splenda,aspartame etc) great ideas on how to lower cholesterol, foods that are high in carbs, vitamins, fats, minerals etc. Great to use for teaching purposes as well.

This book is especially helpful in concisely explaining what it is we must uphold from the "Three Milestones" of Communist theory- Marx, Lenin, and Mao - while also examining what must be discarded...(and most importantly...why)

A great book that will challenge you to rethink "conventional wisdom" about Socialism/Communism.

Perhaps, in light of the leap in public consciousness of the lies of the government and mainstream media, it is time to deconstruct one of the most pervasive lies of our time: that capitalism is the only viable (and desirable) system and that the implosion of the Soviet Union was proof. Maybe it is time to really dig into the contributions of Marx, Lenin and Mao, look deeply and critically into the experiences of the Paris Commune, the Russian and Chinese revolutions, and think hard about the future. Well, it's been done!

Bob Avakian's book not only vigorously defends Marx's basic analysis of production, class society, and vision of classless society but he expands on it, by analyzing the practice and probing the questions posed by the revolutions so far. Phony Communism is Dead is fundamentally optimistic about the possibilities ahead, and while not resorting to formulaic pat answers, Avakian argues that struggling for the communist goal is THE way to get to a world we would all want to live in.

The Poggendorf File is as much about being "burned out" on the day to day of life and work, and searching for an escape, as it is about mental illness and psychiatry. The story starts out with the narrator lamenting his circumstanes -- something obviously has gone terribly wrong, and danger looms -- and telling us he "never wanted to be a doctor." Subsequent chapters delve into a backstory filled with the narrator's dead-end jobs, and introduce us to an interesting central character -- a psychiatrist with hypochondria.

It's about a quarter of the way through the book -- when the narrator and doctor meet, that things really get interesting. No spoilers here, but the title (drawn from Poggendorf's Illusion - a famous optical trick) hints that things may not be as they seem, and you can't always believe what you see.

Though I was impressed with the detailed descriptions of hospital work, and the vividly drawn images of the mentally ill, I was more moved by the book's central message about the inherent frailty of individual identity -- the biggest illusion of all.

If you liked Fight Club and American Psycho, The Poggendorf File -- best described as a tale of life, death and identity theft -- is for you. This insightful dissection of the human experience is Eccles' first novel. The author's previous work can be found on the popular Websites The Morning News and McSweeney's Internet Tendency. Several of his humor pieces were also published in Mountain Man Dance Moves, released last year by Vintage.

Equal parts dark, disturbing, funny, and true -- The Poggendorf File tells the story of a hypochondriac psychiatrist, a severely disturbed patient, and a meddlesome tenant, as their lives intersect, changing them all. The book flips between two narrators, weaving between fantasy and reality in a series of interconnected plotlines. While telling a compelling story, it also grants the reader an unfiltered look into the "day to day" of hospital life, and illustrates the terrible toll of mental illness on both patient and doctor better than anything I've read.

All in all, The Poggendorf File is a great read, and a great first novel. Looking forward to more from this author!

Ya me había leído este libro en inglés hace unos meses y me encantó. Hay partes que te mueres de la risa, y en otras te dan ganas de llorar con la historia de George. Me volvió a gustar otra vez en español. Está divertido, y muy real, muy del corazón en otras partes. Una buena historia de éxito de un latino en USA. En español lo sientes hasta más genuino que en inglés. Y no tienes que ser un fan de George para que te guste.

I had already read this book in English a few months ago and loved it. And loved it again now in Spanish. It's a lot of fun, moving, inspiring, and a real success story. I compared it to the original and found that the translation faithfully conveys the great feeling, humor and spirit of the English version. You don't have to be a George Lopez's fan to enjoy it in any language.
