Hmmmm .... I'm all for first loves finally getting it right the second time around after time apart provided both are free to be together in every which way. It was a happy ending for Donna Hanover ... I mean after all ... her second husband "saw her first" as teenagers. Just like the fictional characters Thomas and Linda in Anita Shreve's "The Last Time They Met" and TV sweethearts Joey and Caitlin from the Canadian teen drama DeGrassi: The Next Generation ... it's more true to life than one would believe that reunions can be this thrilling. That said, on the flip side of such wonderful love tales, is if you read this you might (A) seek out your high school sweetheart despite being partnered; (B) worry that your partner might do the same and leave you with the raw end of the deal. And even more freaky a thought is for all the people who believe in past lives... what if you or your significant other ends up searching for their past life sweetheart? We can all conjure up more scary scenarios. Nonetheless, if you need a great dose of pure unrestrained true life love stories to get you misty-eyed ... read on and dream on from cover to cover! Just excercise good judgement should you decide to hire a private detective who specializes in being a "Finder of Lost Loves".

Navajo Long Walk is an exciting book about an Indian family who is forced to go to camps and live the white sholdiers' way. The main characters are Kee, Hasba, Gentle Woman, the mother, Strong Man, the father, and Wise One, the grandfather. This family, like all the other Navajo families, have to move to different for-away camps that are called forts. Some of the forts they go to are Fort Defiance and Fort Summer.

Kee learns that you can be friends with white soldiers like when he neets a white soldier, his horse and his son.

The reader will enjoy this book becasue it is very detailed and you can picture every word in your mind. You will have a great experience reading about the Navajo way of life.

I found the book to be excellent in the amount of information given and the format. The black and white pictures sometimes failed to show those who are just learning the art a detailed view of the stitch. This would make a great bible of needlepoint for those who want to expand their craft beyond the basketweave and continental stitches. It is a tremendous reference tool for beginners as well as experienced stitchers in that it gives indepth descriptions of the materials used, including advatages and disadvantages of each kind. Materials covered include: canvases, fibers, colors etc. The only such book I have found so far!

The absolute best book on needlepoint stitches

In print for almost twenty yesrs, The Needlepoint Book is by far the best and most useful book on needlepoint. Stitches are divided into chapters according to type (cross stitches, straight stitches). Each stitch has a diagram and a clear black and white picture. But my favorite tool in the book is the stitch tables which begin each chapter. Using these tables you can find great new stitches for backgrounds, heavily textured stitches, easy stitches, and so on. This kind of information is tremendously useful, but I've never seen another book which had it. If you never buy another needlepoint book -- buy this one

Anchor for families

There is no mistaking that shocked, disappointed, guilty, forlorn facial expression of a loved one visiting, and realizing for the first time that their family member is a nursing home resident. They say things like "I didn't know she'd be living this way", or "I hope I did the right thing." How comforting and reassuring it can be for them to have this wonderful tool to review the work they did. The book is awesomely user-friendly! Because of the simple language and extreme practicality of the content, anyone using it will experience a sense of satisfaction with the job well done. Family members will be able to objectify and regain perspective by reviewing what they have written. When details get foggy, as they often do when emotions surface, instead of being tossed about and doubting their decision, an anchor will be there for those who have done their homework. These authors have made the homework easy by providing the worksheets right here in the text.
I am delighted that someone has made a difficult task more palatable and praise-worthy. Now decision-makers will be able to elevate finding the right nursing home for loved one to it's true status-a loving, unselfish and noble act. The joy of doing what is right will make the decision easier. I have not found a text that so superbly and minutely details HOW to do the job.
Nursing-home employees, family members, and residents would all benefit from the content, and enjoy reading this book. I have worked in long-term care for over 15 years, and believe this book to be an answer to many prayers!

Nursing homes are expensive. They also come in three general categories: good, bad, and mediocre. In The New Nursing Homes: A 20-Minute Way To Find Great Long-Term Care, Marilyn Rantz, RN, PhD; Lori Popejoy, RN, GCNS; and Mary Zwygart-Stauffacher, RN, PhD effectively collaborate to help the reader with identifying and securing high-quality, personalized care oriented, long-term nursing home placement for their loved one. All aspects of the evaluation and securement process are covered in authoritative, practical, "user friendly" detail. If you are given the responsibility for the nursing home placement of a family member, begin with a careful reading of The New Nursing Homes. It will save you an immense amount of time, aggravation, confusion, misunderstanding, expense, and disappointment -- and insure your loved one the best possible care their resources (personal and governmental) can afford them.

Written and designed by Warren Lehrer (not Jim Lehrer) this is a really great read and a great gift. Designed like a 'person' this book reads like a person talking. Really fun. Great insight into some New York history and neighborhood feeling. Warren Lehrer is a unique designer who was able to put a 'personality' on the page with photographs, and typography.

A classic portrait of a fascinating New Yorker

Written by Jim Lehrer, who has an interesting way of presenting 'visual literature' (varying font types and other graphic tools), this book is a riveting look at one quintessential New Yorker. Nicky D. Tommaso has lived in the same apartment across the river from the United Nations for over 65 years, and seen life go by with a keen eye, and a charmed smile. This comes across as a series of vignettes, anecdotes, and stories told as only Nicky D can. With an irreverence that is delightful, and an insight that is at times, profound, we are led by the hand to various little corners of his house, his life and his mind. A great read that may be universal in its appeal mainly because its so utterly honest, and drenched in human suffering and joy. All told with a sense of humor that is the most appealing element of this book. Excellent!

historical travel writing at its best
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-24
This book is a joy for the armchair traveler. It takes you back to a place and a time, to a Turkish winter in the waning days of the Ottoman Empire. Burnaby's style is immediate, and compellingly readable. He lets you feel the mud, the cold, the mood of the times -- and the exotic east. It's great stuff. Crossing Anatolia by horseback in the winter, trying to track down rumors then circulating in Europe of anti-Armenian sentiment among the Turks, Burnaby finds the rumors to be baseless. But through every step of his wild goose chase, while we follow him through village after village, Burnaby describes in colorful detail the environment, and the people he meets. The first three-quarters of this book read like fiction, like a good, rollicking adventure story. It doesn't have a crisis near the end, like an adventure novel would, but Burnaby's story is all the better for being true.

Now this is real adventure travel!

Who in their right mind would voluntarily undertake an expedition on horseback thru Asia Minor in winter...Frederick Burnaby did in the year 1876, a time of intrigue in the Ottoman Empire and Russia where the forces that shaped WWI and 20th century alliances took root. This is an opportunity to travel back into time and traverse Asia Minor prior to the invention of the automobile. You will meet people from all classes and cultures; Turkish, Kurdish, Armenian, Persian and more. Burnaby tells of his trip with dry humor and with a suprisingly enlightened view of women, considering the times. This is a good read and worth the price of the book. For adventure travelers with time and money on their hands, retracing Burnaby's route on horseback would be a challenge even today.

In the sky over North Vietnam: A 360-degree account of one day's air battles
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-23
In this highly readable book, Jeffrey Ethell and Alfred Price told the story of the air war over North Vietnam from a fresh and comprehensive perspective.

The air war can be looked at through different lenses. One focus is aircraft (Phantom II, say, or Thud, Corsair, Crusader, or Vigilante). There are the lenses of leadership (Momyer, Black Man and Robin, Manor, Vogt, and Brougham are examples) and heroism (Ritchie, Stockdale, Day, McCain). A third approach is via units (Wolf Pack, Triple Nickel, Misty, Jolly Greens). Tactics is yet one more lens to look at the war (bombing, air-to-air combat, defense suppression, SAM evasion, air control, reconaissance, rescue). There are many books, articles, and web pages that well describe these "parts" of the air war.

What makes "One Day in a Long War" a much different and much better book is that Ethell and Price looked at the air operations over Vietnam on one day -- May 10, 1972 -- and portrayed the "the whole" fast-moving picture.

The main action was the first Operation Linebacker, attacks by the Air Force on targets in the Hanoi area, the Paul Doumer Bridge and the Yen Vien Rail Yard. Navy and Marine aircraft from carriers in the South China Sea attacked Haiphong.

There were dozens of aircraft (Air Force F-4s, Navy and Marine F-4s, A-6s, and A-7s) that penetrated the defenses and delivered bombs to the targets. They were, however, outnumbered by aircraft that cleared their way.

Signals information on the enemy was provided by an RC-135. A U-2 relayed data. An EC-121D "Super Connie" from the College Eye Task Force controlled airspace and directed air intercepts. Preceding the bombers to the target were F-4s that created a corridor of chaff to confuse the North Vietnamese radars. EB-66's blasted the ether with electronic countermeasures. Air Force RF-4s and Navy RF-5s and RF-8s flew reconaissance missions before and after the attacks.

The bombers flying to the target were refueled by KC-135s. Other F-4s flew "MIG Cap" missions, tangling with North Vietnamese fighters in air-to-air combat. "Wild Weasel" F-105Gs from Thailand battled the North Vietnamese antiaircraft guns and surface-to-air missiles with their own radar-homing missiles. Finally, Air Force HH-53D and Navy HH-3A helicopters rescued downed American airmen.

The authors interviewed American aircrew from all the services, some North Vietnamese participants, British diplomats who were serving in North Vietnam, journalists, and American POWs who were listening to the attacks in their cells. They placed Operation Linebacker in the context of the Vietnam war's history and diplomacy. All in all, they told the "whole story" well, making his book a "must read" in the history of air warfare.

This book gives you a very detailed account of May 10, 1972 when the U.S. cranked up the air war machine to send Hanoi a message, that should have been sent many years before. The start of Linebacker I. You will realize the enormous difficulty in mounting raid of this size and the people involved. But there werre no shortages of pilots willing to fly to Hanoi and do what they had wanted to do for years. Gripping detail and human drama.

For a book published over 40 years ago, this read is still relevant and engaging. With snippets of history, humor, science and just plain common sense, it is a good introduction to life in the high desert from a native's perspective. This book was the one that got me hooked on Central Oregon over 25 years ago, enough to live here. People tend to think of the desert as dry and drab, but it is brightly colored by its people and history. A must read for anyone traveling through or moving to the Oregon Outback.

Super book! It really takes you there!

This is an amazing book for anyone who knows, or wants to know anything about Oregon's high desert and the high desert way of life back in the mid 1900's. Many pictures add to the mental pictures your mind conjures up as you read the most amusing stories of old. After reading this book, I even bought the DVD entitled "Indian Fighter" (Kurt Douglas and his then wife both star!), because the author provided the stock for the movie and talks about it a bit in the book. The DVD is a great way to see the high country the book talks about!
