Essentials for the Activity Professional in Long Term Care turned out to be much more than just the essentials. The book is well thought out, and goes into detail when it is needed. I believe that it would be valuable to both the seasoned long term care manager, as well as those new to the field. I particularly liked the "Key Terms" and "Objectives" at the beginning of each chapter, which was great for quickly seeing what REALLY is included in a chapter, which is often difficult to tell in textbooks just from the chapter title. The book also includes facsimiles of actual forms in the documentation section, and there is nothing quite like seeing the real thing. A very well rounded look at long term care. Lots of pictures and charts keep things moving along, and there are self-assessment exams. I would recommend this book to anyone in long term care, regardless of their position.

I read "Long Day's Journey into Night" as a prelude to seeing the current Broadway production, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Brian Dennehy (and I am now really looking forward to seeing the stage production!) and I purchased this downloadable guide for further literary depth. It certainly provided me with that!

I would recommend this guide to students of all ages. I graduated from college 14 years ago and I still found the biographical information, plot summary, character descriptions, themes, style, historical content, critical overview and criticisms enlightening.

All the thrill of paleontological research!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-30
In spite of its title, this is neither your run-of-the-mill account of life's history nor a low-profile, swift treatise on the theoretics of macroevolution, natural selection and the like... It's a much more original collection of highly informative essays about some advancements made in selected issues of palaeobiology. The book is really not for just a curious layreader though, for plenty of technicalities do turn out all over, and some good foundations in general biology and sedimentary geology are needed to fully appreciate its contents.. The style is pleasantly informal and I think the figure caption on page 52 makes for a great example of what the right attitude to making science should be sometimes: casual and humorous! It can be a lot of fun!! (Okay, this would still be hard in polymer technology, I know...) If this is the spirit of aussie scientifical research, then we've all got a lot to learn from those down under on how to be serious without becoming overly pompous and bookish!
Additional merits of the book are a refreshing focus on the paleontological treasures of Australia and the Southern hemisphere in general, rarely mentioned elsewhere in literature, and a juicy list of references, even if mainly just from the late 80's and the 90's, for those who wish more insight on the biology of squishy cambrian organisms!!
Only a few quibbling criticisms... The origin of life should have been discussed in depth or skipped altogether, 'cause just the three pages it gets leave it badly maimed.. Also, I'd have liked one less chapter on dinosaurs, making room instead for the permo-triassic radiation of mammal-like reptiles... Then again, about the origin of pterosaurs, "Thecodonts" no longer exists as a proper taxon: they were just a paraphyletic assemblage that more recent systematics had already revised at the time the book was written. Last, the serious letdown is that the evolution of plants is overlooked altogether, just one chapter out of 19.....?? And still, it's not clear whether that chapter wanted to be about botany or about the evolutionary palaeoecology of insects! Well anyhow... Just ignore my nagging!! The book was real fun to read and spills out most of the savour by which paleontologists view their objects of research, so buy it right off!! And since a few years have already passed from its publication date, an updated edition wouldn't be bad to get a taste of the latest intelligence on those same topics...

Great book, though not for the novice

If you're a student of paleontology, an avid amateur, or -- of course -- a professional, then this is a great book! It provides two very useful services. First, it captures the developments in paleontology (and evolution sciences in general) that have occured over the past ten or so year. Secondly, it focuses a bright light on developments in the southern hemisphere, where an awful lot of the action is now taking place. The book starts at the beginning (origins of life) and moves through various levels of development to human evolution in succint and easy-reading chapters (though the authors might have done a little more deciphering of the jawbreaking scientific terms they sprinkle about). There's an attempt at humor, but maybe Australian humor is differently evolved than American... it seems a little too chummy and not terribly funny. Perhaps the only serious problem with the book is inadequate illustrations. While there is usually one illustration per chapter, they are only moderately informative. Many more would be useful, as would be maps. As the authors are constantly refering to the breakup of the early southern hemisphere, a map or two would be very appreciated. All in all, a terrific book.

I found this book to be an excellent source of information on the subject.

Where can you find a native cactus? When do the alewives run? What carnivorous plant grows wild in Quogue? John Turner's book is a wonderful guide to the delights of Long Island. The hiker, cyclist, birdwatcher or kayaker will all find this book insightful and informative. This is an excellent gift for yourself or a friend.

John Turner is the most informed Naturalist I've had the priviledge to be acquainted with. He shares with the reader a lifetime of adventure and exploration through all the seasons on Long Island, and, supplies so much explicit information within the 190 plus pages of this book it is almost overwhelming. Accompanying John on one of his many treks into the true wilds of this mostly Suburban environment is the only way to obtain a better understanding of nature.

The Story Behind the Book

It was the first Monday in August 1985. Mondays can either be real good or real bad for pastors depending on the day before Monday-Sunday! Sunday is the day the self-worth and even the calling of the pastor are tested to its limits. An experienced pastor has counseled wisely, "Never resign on a Monday!" On this particular Monday, I walked up to a few pastor friends who were gathered in the parking lot of the Conference center. The annual denominational conference was about to begin. The typical Monday morning pastor's conversation was in full bloom. "So, how many did you have in church yesterday?" was the operating question. Now, we all know that that question is usually asked by pastors who had a "good" Sunday, and this is the way they can let others know how well they did. Actually, it is a very self-serving question. It is not about the questioned; it is about the questioner! The respondent, who usually had a "bad" Sunday responds by shuffling his feet, clearing his throat, and saying something like, "We've had a lot of sickness in our area and seems like so many people were out on vacation. . ." This one-upmanship in the parking lot that Monday morning got the best of me. So, as a junior member of the clergy, I timidly asked, "Do any of you have low Sundays? Do you ever get discouraged? Do you ever feel like giving up? Do you ever wonder if it's worth it?" As soon as the words left my mouth, I knew I had said the wrong thing! Why deal with reality when denial serves us so well? The book in your hands was born on that Monday morning in that parking lot. The accounts in the book finally answer the questions that were asked in the parking lot and remind us that failure is the womb of success. As you read this book, you will laugh and you will weep. You will shake your head in agreement as well as amazement. Failure is not a popular subject. Go to your nearest bookstore and look for the shelf marked FAILURE; that shelf does not exist! Everyone wants to talk about success (it sells), but we all know we fail at more things than we succeed at. So let's talk about it! This book will get you started.

I met Samuel Chand after he spoke at a conference in Los Angeles, and bought his book right off the table. My wife and I had been struggling to plant a church in South Central Los Angeles, and at the time were stinging from several painful setbacks... could we have done anything to avert those disasters? 20-20 hindsight always accuses "Yes!". Chand's book helped us deal with our failure, pick up the pieces (those available to pick up at least) and continue on. Best thing about this book: it is not mere cheerleading or positive-thinking, but honest, bold approach to understanding and redeeming failure so that "all things [really do] work for the good of those who are called according to His purpose". Don't read it when things are going well. Read it when you are angry, despairing, or ready to give up.

Michelle, ma belle!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-31
I couldn't put down the book once I got caught up in the life of little Michelle, the 6 year old, who reminded me of the many children I cared for at the orphanage in Montréal. Her experiences as a child were so similar to theirs, that I wanted to know how her life would turn out despite the lack of love of her father. Her search for a loving "Father-God" was also similar to the God we shared with our orphans, who knew almost nothing of their parents. Connie Lemonde's main character, Michelle, brought back many memories that were true my life experiences as an educators, and I thank her for the opportunity of reliving them. I recommend this novel to all who live children, to all who feel as though life has cheated them a bit because of their difficult or unloving childhood. A very good read not to be put down till the very end.

Who said childhood was fun?

Nowadays, we're led to believe that childhood should be fun, a carefree period in one's life before the difficulties of adulthood hit us. Well, the truth is that the supposed carefree years of a child's life are now so blissful. Michelle, a 6 year old, at the beginning of the novel, immediately brings us face-to-face with the reality of life then and now.
Although society tries to brush aside the fact of INCEST, novels such as THE FAMILY SECRET, forces us to face the truth, the fact that many young children are subjects of parental sexual abuse. Of course, nowadays, we hear about parents, who are convicted of such a crime, years after the fact. But, in the 1950's and for years to come, children suffered in silence because of society's ignorance of the harm that such abuse may have on a child. Secrecy was and still is the password. Such behavior must be THE FAMILY SECRET, not to be divulged to strangers, even though most of one's relatives were and are aware of the situation.
Whether one has been abused or not, THE FAMILY SECRET reveals to the reader the complexities of family relationships. In a few pages, the author helps us identify with Michelle by whetting our curiosity as to whether she'll make it to adulthood with a relatively normal psyche.
I do recommend this novel as a means of brushing the surface of family secrets sufficiently so that we may realize that, in the end, all secrets become known...better sooner than later so as to awaken one's understanding of our parents behavior toward us and toward one another. Understanding may bridge the gap between a child's emotions and fantasies so that reality may be finally perceived before it's too late.

One of the best F&A books written for general managers I have read. Detailed enough to give the reader an excellent grasp of the subject, but doesn't require calculus to understand. If you're a manager who cringes during discussions of cash flow, cost of capital, and discount rates, this book is for you. Can't wait for other titles in the series!
