Although this book is geared toward young teens, adult readers will be enchanted with it as well.

The confusion and fears of the main character, 13-year-old Marilyn, are clearly presented and the way that Marilyn deals with them creates an entirely believable story. At times, Marilyn acts much older than her age and at other times, she seems much younger. Exactly as real-life teens do!

In "Discovering the Long Way Home", Julie Larose has created an exceptionally well-written account of how parental emotional abandonment feels from the child's perspective. This issue alone could have made this book depressing for the reader but Julie has filled the pages with hope, caring and understanding. Then, she continues the action to bring the whole issue to a most satisfying resolution.

Young teens will enjoy reading this book for Marilyn encounters many situations that they will be able to relate to but for parents everywhere, this book is a "must read" for it is truly enlightening!

Marilyn's life is not as fun and exciting as you might think. Sure, her mom and dad are famous actors, and they're rich, and she's traveled all over the world -- how could that not be amazing? Well, mostly because both of her parents are so busy working, getting randomly married and divorced, and maintaining their "images" that they're too busy to be interested in Marilyn. The reason she's seen so much of the world is because she keeps getting shipped from parent to parent, based on whose life she'll interfere with the least, or who's tired of having her around. She's had a ton of different half- and step-siblings, but never a family, and never any real friends.

Marilyn has had enough. She's taking charge this time. She's going to run away. Better yet, she's going to make it look like she's been abducted. Then her parents will have to pay attention to her. And when the press gets a hold of the story, they'll have to at least pretend that they care.

Needless to say, things don't quite work out as planned. The first person she hitches a ride with sees through some of her stories. He doesn't know who she is, or why she's running, but he takes her to a place he knows is safe. The small town he drops her off in is completely different than anywhere she's ever lived. And the people... They are unlike anyone in Marilyn's memory. They seem genuinely good and caring. It's almost too bad she'll have to leave and go back to her real world. Speaking of her world, why hasn't there been any mention of her disappearance in any paper?

Marilyn is forced to take a good look at her ideas of life and people. She eventually forges her own path to a life she almost lost, but not before she gets herself into some trouble, meets some people with much bigger problems, and finds exactly what she wasn't looking for.

This is an interesting look at the darker side of Hollywood life, as well as a view of the brighter side of humanity. It's pretty hard to find yourself when there is no one to guide you.

The book is told by Marilyn, with regular trips into her memories. She is a very real and developed character, as are most of the characters. Her history is disturbingly believable. The public knowledge of her parents is a great touch, and done very nicely. I found the very end to be a bit abrupt, but it doesn't really detract from the story itself. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by this book.

A glimpse into London and human nature

I really enjoyed this collection of short stories. Often I would stop reading and think to myself, "Why is this so familiar?". This book was actually published in the US under the title London Transport....and I had read it! In this collection Maeve Binchy looks into the lives of the many people who come and go on London's underground every day. This book offers up a wonderful cross section of society and engaging characters. Binchey is at her best describing people and their frailities. There are no clear cut heros or villians, rather the people are infused with a humanity and humor that carry you along. If you're a Binchy fan this is a must add to your colection (unless you already have London Transport). A treat to read and to reread.

Excellent, but published in America under another name.

This is a great book of short stories. If you like Maeve Binchy's short stories you will have a wonderful time. But be warned, this book has been published in the United States as "London Transports." If you've read one, you've read the other

One of our family's favorite picture books

Our younger daughter picked this one above all for one of us to read aloud to her first grade class. The silly verse("There once was a dog who was a bit of a clot, he'd buried his bone and forgotten the spot") and the outrageously detailed Korky Paul illustrations are a delight (somewhat like those of Steven Kellogg, kids find something new every reading). A subterranean search by the persistent pup leads through a labyrinth of obstacles with pesky cats at every turn. Highly recommended.

Very silly illustrations of the dog that keeps pulling out even more outrageous things from the ground. There are extra details in Korky Paul's illustrations that keep you looking at the pictures over and over again. Of all Korky Paul's books I think this is my favorite.

Dorothy Sterling describes the Outer Lands (The Cape, Long Island, Nantucket, etc.) very eloquently, using understandable, interesting language. She adds charming local folklore and local sights, as well as maps and drawings that contribute so much to the book. This book is great for leasure reading as well as a textbook for a marine biology class.

This book was first published the year I was born, in the same province. The verses from "Down by Jim Long's Stage" are among my earliest memories, and I can still rhyme off most of them today, almost 30 years later. I don't know if I can blame the book for my fate, but I've found myself in a career as a fisheries biologist, and I can scarely see a codfish, sculpin of squid without the words coming back to me. I'm no longer a child, and have never been a fish, but thanks Al and Pam! As long as there are copies to be had, this book is going to be a required gift to all the youngsters (and young-at-heart) in my life.

A wonderful and recommended rhyming book for young readers.

Written by Al Pittman, Down By Jim Long's Stage is a justifiably classic picturebook cherished for 25 years, now reprinted in a special collector's edition. The rhymes about various different fish are pleasant, lyrical, and make for excellent reading to young people before bedtime. The charming color illustrations of the various add a special flair, so distinctive that they earned the Canadian Library Association's Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Award for Best Canadian Illustration in 1977. A wonderful rhyming book for young readers, and enhanced with new illustrations by Pam Hall, Down By Jim Long's Stage will continue to be treasured for many more years to come.

The author not only addressed the problem, but also showed how he helps solve it. He shows the pain these youth go through so poignantly. I work with vietnamese refugee youth and this book taught me so much in how the vietnamese family works and how to adress certain problems. this is probably the most down to earth book i've ever read. It's definatly easy to read too.

Long, a counselor at a juvenile detention center in California, discusses the rise of Viet Namese gangs across the US. The book is essentially a lengthy illustration essay that employs narrative accounts of numerous adolescents and their families. Long provides through his firsthand experience, a frightening but sympathetic glimpse at one of the untold results of the war that turned a generation upside down. It is a story filled with cruelty and abandonment on both an individual and a national level. Perhaps the most valuable component of this study is the actual dialogue between Long and his wards. Long is engaging and wise, and the words of his "clients" are often terrifying and explicit.

In a day where to be superficial is the norm, this book is anything but. This book is written in a language simple enough for a child, yet the concepts and emotions are deep enough to touch anyone. Our children are exposed daily to a society which values many of the wrong things, so take a moment and share with them what really matters. One day when they are older and this book helps them through tough times they will thank you; for they will know what is truly important in life.

This easy-read book is one of elegant simplicity and is all-inspiring. Mr. Long's simply written allegory is a "must-read" for anyone who has experienced hardships and wishes to rebound, get on with their lives and put life in true perspective. The brilliance of this book is its simplicity -- it is inspirational, encouraging and sensitive.

Driftwood accomplishes in a comprehensible 50 pages that which academic tomes fail to. It's delightful!

Superbly illustrated by Irving Toddy, Dzani Yazhi Naazbaa': Little Woman Warrior Who Came Home is a bilingual picturebook written in both Navajo and English by Northern Arizona University professor Evangeline Parsons Yazzie. The story follows a young Navajo girl who was forced upon the Long Walk that attempted to resettle the Navajos in a barren land. Illness, famine, and earth that cannot yield healthy crops causes much suffering and death among the people. Yet amid the hardship, the young girl learns the steadfast significance of the clan system, the prayers and songs of her brethren, and the importance of coming together in dark times to help one another. Though many individuals would be lost and mourned, she and her people would survive the ordeal, and through her courage she would earn the name the Little Woman Warrior Who Came Home. The realistic color illustrations make the story come alive, and the text is sufficiently involved to make Dzani Yazhi Naazbaa' ideal for young readers who are just about ready to make the transition from picturebooks to chapter books.
