As the child of a teacher of English, I'd been introducted to many of Shakespeare's plays at a very early age. This has lead to two things - a twisted sense of humour and an appreciation of the same. The Reduced Shakespeare Company fits the bill perfectly. Silly, witty, and intelligent, the RSC puts life back into the bard. If you're looking for a serious scholarly thesis on Shakespeare, look elsewhere. If you're looking for somthing that will make you laugh until you cry, the RSC is for you! And hey, you never know - you might learn something too.

Very funny!

A whimsical mixture of slapstick humor and witty parody. Somewhat sophmoric at times, but generally insightful.

The Reduced Shakespeare Company knows their stuff, and are very creative about their presentation.

I've been an RSC fan since their early renfaire days, & their work is as timeless as the Bard's. This is Shakespeare thru the eyes of American pop culture with references to everything from Casablanca to Dr. Ruth to rap music. But it's not Shakespeare for dummies -- the RSC lads know the real texts inside & out. They show Shakespeare's greatness thru their humor -- & they remind us how funny Shakespeare really is. The RSC would be an excellent introduction to Shakespeare for students or anyone who thinks the Bard is stuffy & boring.

Now in a newly revised and expanded edition, Rifts Conversion: Book One by Kevin Siembieda is a straightforward player manual for blending source materials for role-playing games based upon the Palladium Fantasy multiverse, and which includes the rules for combining aspects of game universes such as Heroes Unlimited, Ninjas & Superspies, as well as over 100 monsters, stats for over 40 optional player races from giants to wolfen, and much, much more. Rifts Conversion: Book One is an excellent and highly recommended resource for combining role-gaming campaigns and play styles under a seamless and balanced set of rules.

Dozens of monsters, racial characters, and NPC's for your campaign. Small and Large powerhouses of every shape and size. It gives you alot of decisions when creating your campaign and adds an element of unexpectedness when something suddenly pops up. Provides lots of tables for random percentage role from robot hit tables to energy rifle and pistol availability on the Black Market. Also provides conversions for every major Palladium book on the market!!

The Conversion Book is Essential to Running a Rifts Campaign

This book is aboslutely essential to running a successful Rifts campaign. Don't let the title throw you off. Only a few chapters of the book (less than half of the overall book) actually cover conversion rules from other Palladium systems. The rest of the book is a virtual bestiary, a Monsters Manual for Rifts! The book has a huge assortment of creatures for a GM to use against his players, and the monsters vary wildly in power, from ones perfect as first-level adversaries, to adult horned dragons! Stats are included for all of them, of course. The only reason I give this book a nine instead of a ten is because it failed to provide conversion rules from any other non-Palladium RPG. But overall, I found the book extremely valuable.

This is the story of the famous saint through whom we received the Miraculous Medal. No sacramental since the Rosary has had such an impact on the Church. The author spent 10 years in research, studying many documents never before available. What he has produced is a definitive life of the Saint which is both highly readable and inspiring. You will come to love St. Catherine Laboure, will see in her a woman of incredible strength and character, of unbelievable constancy, of kindness, humility, obedience and self-effacement. Here was a saint who, from her early years was "entirely mystic," to quote her sister; who from age 12 served 10 years as mistress to her father's large household of 17 (five family members and 12 farm hands), who worked 40 years with constant fidelity running an old man's retirement-nursing home for her order; who after the Miraculous Medal apparitions, would speak to the Blessed Mother at any time she chose and be answered by Our Lady; who was a tower of strength to her order during two revolutions; and who made innumerable prophecies that came true. Full of hidden gems. Enthralling story! Full of terrific photos including some of her incorrupt body. 239pp. PB. Imprimatur.

Even though the Miraculous Medal is probably one of the most popular sacramnetals, up there with the Rosary and the Brown Scapular, most people do not really know the visionary, St. Catherine Laboure. For some strange reason she's not a well-known as St. Bernadette ( Lourdes ) or San Juan Diego ( Guadalupe ), two other saints our Lady has revealed her Immaculate Conception. I bought this book with some reserve because most books I have read about saints have been so overly dramatic that it's almost hard to believe that the saint was also a human being. This book was a surpise, Father Dirvin did such a good job of researching and writing , the book is very interesting. You can see the person of St. Catherine as a true saintly person and also a human being. She was a very hard working person, with her family, later with the Sisters of Charity, and in taking care of the old men. She was a very real person, not given to ecstasies, she even took notice of the Blessed Virgin's outfit when she came to see her and how she looks like. Her Guardian Angel have to remind her that " This is the Blessed Virgin ". This book is really wonderful, fast- paced and great reading. As Rev. Skelly wrote in the foreword " This is a book you will find very hard to lay aside until you have read the final sentence on the last page. "

It would be very difficult to read more than a couple of pages without being challenged on your management approach or to be reminded of a proven solution to a problem. Managers of sales and marketing operations will find creative ways to approach their craft as well as those devices and methods that have always worked (and always will). Written in bite-sized chunks, you might find it helpful to simply meditate on one concept per day. They all apply to the successful management of sales and marketing. If you apply these principles, you will be successful. It's as simple as that.

I read this book when it first came out some time ago and wrote a very strong recommendation for the book for the publisher to use. It's an excellent book. It's well written, flowing, and well targeted at the issues that affect couples moving into the second half of life together. If you are moving into that time of life or know someone who is, I highly recommend this book.

The Arps must have been secretly watching our home when they wrote this book. Their comments on the changes in relationships and priorities were right on the mark. My wife and I have applied several of their "challenges" and the positive difference has been very noticeable. I enjoyed the book so much, it's become the background for a popular class I teach to "empty nesters" in our church.

If your "nest" is empty now, or will be in the near future, you owe it to yourself and your marriage to read "The Second Half of Marriage". I doubt there is a better book on the subject available today.

This is a well written, informative book on the biblical view of what a marriage can be if the couple is willing to work together to benefit the other. I found it challenging me to be a better spouse and to learn to live the companionship marriage. I would recommend this book to every couple who wants to enjoy their later years together.

Perhaps this is an 'expert review' because I have just retired from thirty years on the faculty at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Dr. Sewall showed good sense to hire her in those early days. Who today would teach German, French and mathematics. I weep for her adversity, but I rejoice for her courage. How much easier my life has been because of her.

One of my book club friends loaned me this book and it is a marvel! What an amazing man! His descriptions are seductive and his enthusiasm is infectious. I recommend this book to everyone who loves adventure and is interested in history - obviously these are his tales from his perspective but then what history book isn't in the end. It is just so much fun to read! (You don't have to be young boy - I'm an older woman)

Richard Halliburton belongs to a lost generation of adventurer/writers. His books enthralled me sixty years ago and still he does not disappoint. Today it would be politically and geographically impossible to follow in all his footsteps which makes this book (and his others) a modern-day adventure.

Review Date: 2004-01-10
"Shaping the Next One Hundred Years" by Lempert, Popper and Bankes is as an exciting new book on strategic thinking and is comparable in importance to Michael Porter's "Competitive Strategy ". The book describes a methodology that mirrors how successful business leaders think while using novel software to expand and codify the decision making process. Lempert et al accomplish this by using exploratory modeling to evaluate the myriad possible futures a decision maker faces and then comparing different strategies against the desired metrics. The results are new insights and a strategy that works regardless of unpredictable events the future. The methodology is revolutionary and will become the preeminent way important decisions are made.

When I saw the book The Short Book: Tall Stories, Freakish Facts, and the Long and Short of Being Small in a Great Big World by Zachary Kanin, I figured it was a must-read for me. Being a statuesque 5' 4", I would say I resemble this title. Short Book is a fun read that has plenty of laughs while also pointing out that being six feet tall is not a prerequisite for success in today's society.

Contents:
Forward; Shortspective; Smallotry; Profiles in Shortage; Suppshort; A Neat Little Package

This is one of those books that is a mix of off-beat humor, facts, and outright fiction that doesn't give any indicator of where the author might go next. For instance, the reason you're short is that your parents didn't love you and would do anything to make sure you weren't happy in life (fiction!). Job interviews are far different if you're short than if you're tall (humor). There are actual surgical procedures to make you taller (fact), but it doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun to have your legs broken and continually stretched as new bone forms. I'll take my current height, thank you very much... Profiles in Shortage is probably one of the more interesting chapters, where Kanin lists a number of people from various walks of life who are aren't known for their vertical superiority. All in all (which isn't much at our height), you'll find that "being short" is far more normal than the common view that the media leads you to believe.

Other than for the fun of reading the book, this might be a nice choice for someone who is overly fixated on their height. While it doesn't bother me now, I know it was difficult growing up as the shortest person at school. This book wouldn't have changed that, but it would have gone far to give me role models to look up to (or over at)... Then when you finally grow up (or just get old), you can choose to ignore all those giant freaks of nature. :)

Fun!

This book sure isn't "short" on fascinating anecdotes! Or fun!

My wife and I were able to enjoy it even though we are both of average height for our country (the United States). Beat the Christmas rush and buy this book in October!
