I really enjoyed this book for a lot of reasons. First, it is a book about the practical aspects of running an ever-changing, always evolving business. Ed fills the pages with his own insights and his take on the advice of business gurus, almost always positive. Next, the book is an intriguing commentary on the history of Gensler, a world class architecture firm.

Well worth it if you are a fan of business books, a must if you are interested in the business of architecture.

The author takes a journey through his experience as a team-member, and ultimately leader of what would become the largest architecture and design firm in the world.
Great lessons on transparency and effective methods for dealing with the 'soft' issues which ultimately help support the foundation of true long-cycle-oriented organizations.
Great take-aways for implementation elsewhere.

This book is the best local history book I have seen yet on San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly - it is the only one I have ever found on Cal Poly. I was surprised to learn that there was an auto race track in the county, and that Cal Poly was originally a high school! Those and many other things about the area are in Maxwell Long's book. I had bought another picture history book on San Luis Obispo at a used book store - by Loren Nichols, and it is not even half as good as this one in terms of content, number of pictures, quality of pictures, and format. I graduated some time ago from Cal Poly, and I really loved my years there, and this book is really good for Cal Poly Alumni, and San Luis Obispo-ites. The author also goes beyond the city limits of San Luis Obispo, there is a bunch on Santa Margarita and other parts of the county - like the National Guard Camp, and Pismo Beach.

Awsome Cal Poly pictures!

My cousin showed me this book, and I just ordered a copy. We are both Cal Poly Alums, and Maxwell-Long has really put together a really interesting pictoral history of the Cal Poly, and SLO. The pictures are really cool - and the captions tell each of their stories. What I really got into with this book was how much SLO, Cal Poly and the people have changed over the past 100 years. And I think that this is the 100 year aniv. of Cal Poly. I recommend that if you are a Cal Poly Alum that you might want to buy this book. I had no idea before I read this book that Cal Poly had started out as a high school, then junior college, and then a real university. Anyone who lives in SLO today will probably be surprised at what it looked like 100 years ago, and there is a bunch on it in this book.

Best collection of Cal Poly and SLO pictures ever!

I am an alumni of Cal Poly, and I have been searching for a book like this for some time. Thomas Maxwell-Long has assembled the most fantastic array of pictures of Cal Poly during its initial decade that I have ever come across. I can't believe how awsome these images are, not only of Cal Poly, but of San Luis Obispo too. And along with each picture is a superb caption. This is a must for any Cal Poly alumni or student, and for anyone who is interested in San Luis Obispo.

Through this great read, Maxwell Long did an excellent job of documenting and illustrating the diverse history of Cal Poly. The impressive photos and unique perspective allows the reader to get a feel for my favorite Central Coast town and University! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in San Luis Obispo and require that loyal Alums buy it today.

I'm a reader from Germany and I've met Richard Hinrichs a few times. He actually gives some of my friends lessons and I think he's one of the greatest horseman of the 21st century. His book is well-structured and easy to understand and you can almost "feel" the sensitiveness in his way to train horses, but it's necessary that everybody who want to go "his" way with horses had lessons in the past and experiences with this kind of classical dressage.
So is this book really great for professionals and for look up in connection with a professional training but bad to get completely new in this science!!!!!!!!!!!

Lovely pictures and fires the ambition!

This isn't really a beginner's book - except as an example of something to aspire to, as it contains page after page of the most delicious equine eye-candy.
However, I disagree with another reviewer that this book is only for the professional. As well as being to some extent a 'scholarly tome', it contains some delightful anecdotes and pictures of goats, dogs, ponies and horses not of 'classical' type performing "haute ecole" movements.
In addition, it contains some simple exercises to maximise athleticism and suppleness that any eager horseman could try, whether their equine be a Shetland pony or a Baroque stallion.
Well worth reading!

Gina wrote an easy-to-read, complete and inspiring book about the importance of learning from failures and merely treating them as feedback - not a reason to quit. I think this should be a required textbook for every graduating high school Senior and a gift for every person who starts a new job or begins a new business. Failures must occur in order for Success to be experienced. Great book!

Moberg's novel, although geared towards the "tween" set, is inspiring for readers of all ages. It reminded me a bit of the "American Girls" series (which I love) because of the historical setting, but this book is much more richly developed. The characters are also all well developed -- I was pleased to discover that Cornelia, who at first appears to be cast as simply "the rich snob," has in fact a much more complex background. All of the characters are engaging, and this book is definitely a wonderful way to learn about a little-known aspect of American history while enjoying a memorable story. Highly recommended.

A must for teens, librarians, & teachers

Julia Moberg's debut novel completely transported me to another world where I got an emotional story and a better understanding of WWII. Eighteen-year-old Byrd Thompson is a great character--a real girl with fears and boy interests, as well as a heroine her country barely recognizes. I love her nemesis, the prissy, Cornelia, another pilot in the program. The secondary characters are unusually well-developed and the action is dead-on. The climaxes are awesome and the ending is extremely satisfying as well as unpredictable. This is a must for any young reader.

A wonderful story

This book, about a little known event in the history of women pilots is a must read for kids and families interested in both history and pioneering women aviators. Beautifully written it held my attention on each page, and I read it from start to finish in record time. This is a "do not miss" read for young women whose aspirations may be somewhat out of the ordinary. The experience (based on true events) of these women aviators is truely inspirational, and Moberg's accessible style and elegant prose makes this a title that will be read and reread for many years to come!

Byrd's father loved flying and spreading the joy of flying. When he died in a flying accident, Byrd's mother refused to talk about airplanes or even let her daughter near one. Byrd disobeyed, and found herself when she flew. Soon she obtained a pilot's license and gave lessons.

During WWII, she heard about a special school for women pilots to aid the war effort. She immediately took the entrance exam, never dreaming that she'd be accepted.

Byrd leaves small town life and travels across the country by train to attend WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) training school. Here, the girls sleep on cots, share a bathroom with twelve other women, perform calisthenics, and enjoy excellent food during a time where rationing food swept the nation.

Then the real day begins when they attend flying lessons with men who want them to fail.

Bi-weekly tests secure a girl's place at the school, and if performances are not acceptable, girls wash out and go home. Byrd and her friends are determined not to let that happen to their squad. For these girls, flying is in their blood, and they feel at home in the air.

Julia Moberg writes about a little known fact in American history when the women ruled the skies, testing airplanes for the Air Force, ferrying planes for male pilots, and doing their part for the war effort.

In Dusty Sturm, W.H. Guthrie has created a most memorable Las Vegas character, akin to Walter Huston dancing in the movie "The
Treasure of the Sierra Madre," though the likeness ends there. While reading it, I found myself with tears in my eyes one moment and laughing out loud the next. The characters remind me of those created by Damon Runyon, though the style of the writing is Guthrie's alone and is of prodigious quality. The outrageous people, the time span from Las Vegas as a little town to a big city and the hints of Godfather control of the casinos is intriguing. I can't wait to see Guthrie's next book, which, if he's smart, will give me more Dusty Sturm. Heck, I'll go meet Dusty if his lady doesn't. What fun!

If you enjoy fun reading, "So Long Las Vegas" is your opportunity to relax and enjoy the wry humor of W.H. Guthrie. The author has taken a multitude of short stories and woven each with a blend of humor as well as a touch of "tounge in cheek" realizm into his characters. If you have ever spent any time in the real Las Vegas or known anyone from there, you will easily relate to many of the Authors "freinds".

It has been quite sometime since I have enjoyed any book this much. It is easy reading and gives one a sense of urgency to finish one story and move on to the next, while the Author is writing of the fast paced life and times of an unsure young writer always on the verge of leaving his beloved Las Vegas.

"So Long Las Vegas" is a fun, quick, must read book written by one that has lived the "Las Vegas experience" and has been able to relate this knowledge to his readers. Well done Mr. Guthrie, when can we expect your next series of life experiences?

As a longtime Las Vegan, I continually found myself trying to identify the real names of the characters W.H. Guthrie's protagonist encountered during his adventures in this book. Though I wasn't always successful in that attempt, I thoroughly enjoyed Guthrie's writing style, remniscent as it is of that master of the short story, Damon Runyon. Guthrie has written a series of stories that are alternately funny and sad, but always thought-provoking.

I loved it!

Finally, a book that I can share with my friends!

"Dusty Sturm" caught my interest immediately and reminded me of someone very special in my life. I could not put it down and read it in its entirety in one day. (Needless to say my house and office work suffered until I finished the book.) W.H. Guthrie managed to keep me constantly interested without using indecent language, etc. as a crutch. I followed his trail of stories with a smug smile on my face as I thoroughly enjoyed myself and was immersed in his world.

This author has an honest talent and can tell a story with the best of them. He does not need a gimic! What a pleasure! Bravo!

I was totally surprised and extremely pleased with the ending of the book, but sad to see it end. I expected something entirely different and not nearly as good as the actual ending. I hope that there will be another book soon. I can't wait!

Please consider me a charter W. H. Guthrie #1 fan!

I was very leery for a while to buy this product after the LUG debacle but was was very glad I did afterwards. Decipher put together a great psuedo-d20 d6 sytem RPG that is easy to play with tons of Star Trek backround in it that will please gamers and fans alike I think. In fact only a non-trekkie would be crippled when reading the many in rule Star Trek references from all the series except Enterprise. As other reviewers have stated, this book focuses on character creation and has little in the way of Narrator tools and it is best used with the Narrators guide. Fan books, maps, galaxy guides, technical manuals, creature guides etc. from Star Trek all are very useful one might say essential to this game as well. In short the pictures, backround, rules, and system are all excellent with this Star Trek license game and I give it my highest marks.

Great buy for this collector

First, let me say that I bought this for the Trek content and for inspiration as a writer and may never play the game. I have played some previous RPGs (none Trek) so I can still evaluate it as one - I hope. Anyway, this appears to be a complete player's guide. Unlike some games, everything you need is here, and sourcebooks are extras not essentials. There are ten starting species to play: Humans, Bajorans, Betazoids, Cardassians, Klingons, Ferengi, Trill, Vulcans, Talaxians and Ocampans. Each matches what we have seen in the show in their attribute modifiers and special abilities, although Vulcans have so many that some were cut. The action is done by rolling dice once, adding your character's skill score, bonuses and penalties and then comparing the result to the number needed for success. Everything your characters can do is expressed in a skill, and the range of skill coverage is very good. Characters also have edges and flaws, character traits that help define their personalities and affect their skills. Finally, each character also has Courage points. These represent heroic action and you use them to add to your rolls, either to prevent failure or boost the level of your success. (I would love this feature as a player.) There are seven basic professions: Diplomat, Merchant, Mystic, Rogue, Scientist, Soldier and Starship Officer. There are elite starship officer professions for every one we have seen in the shows. There are other elite professions that can be entered by anyone meeting their prerequisites. This system manages transfers like Spock from Science Officer to Commander to Ambassador and then probably either Envoy or Spy, all as a Starship Officer. All in all, the system really captures the feel of Star Trek characters.

The guide has a number of flaws. Least annoying first, there are a number of canon errors, which is surprising considering how much trivia the Decipher staff know about Star Trek. It was enough to bother me a little, so some fellow Trek reviewers may be driven crazy by it. As has been mentioned in most reviews (such as on rpg.net) the chapter and section order is really bad. The sections on character mechanics and level advancement should have been consolidated and in front. Character Development should probably have been in front of Professions, since you would use them in that order, and the non-starship elite professions should have followed the basic professions. The worst flaws are outright errors in presenting the mechanics of the game. There are edges listed in training that were renamed or eliminated by the time the Traits chapter was written. There are errors in the examples supposed to clarify how the game works. The level advancement rules are sometimes unclear. The Starship Duty ability is, according to the FAQ on the web, importantly more limited than it reads in the Guide. This needed a much more thorough editing before printing.

These problems are irritating, but they are fortunately simple to resolve. The character generation system and the skill test system are solid and very simple to implement. The guide also explicitly states that the players can create their own skills and edges, and even rules for doing so, and that the Narrator can change the type of skill test as he sees fit, if necessary. Should I ever choose to play, I would be very happy to use this system. As a collector, the insight into the skills and abilities of the character types, especially the elite professions, was worth the price. Also, nearly a third of the guide is given to chapters on equipment, starships, the galaxy and the Federation. Those sections were really interesting and informative. As a player I would give this a four for the errors, but as a collector I give it five stars.

Very high quality...

This is the first book of the Star Trek RPG series. In this volume, it gives you the basics of character creation and gameplay from the player's point of view. It's a pretty simple and flexible gameplay system. However, there are a few complaints about this book. First of all, I feel that it wasn't organized very well. There isn't a checklist for character creation (I had to get that from another GM), so at first it's a little confusing. You have to jump around to different chapters to get all the information you need on character creation. Even just adding a checklist would have helped a lot. A second complaint is that a lot of skills, especially racial skills and abilities, are not listed on the character sheet, so again, you'll have to use resourses created by other GMs or make your own.

Even though this book has weak points, they can be overcome with resources available on the internet. Just be warned, this book only presents the game from the standpoint of the player. While the book claims that the game is playable with only this book, it's very difficult because there are no adventure seeds, or even many races or creatures to play with. If you're planning on running a game, you'll definitely need to pick up the Narrator's Book as well.

Through Spiritual Eyes has as many facets as a diamond, and Carole's spirit guides, Cameron and Rachelle, touch on many subjects. For anyone who has known abuse in childhood, Carole's journey offers an awe inspiring story of healing. Under the childhood yuk, we find in Carole, a woman of kindness and love, who tore off the past's unnecessary layers to bathe her soul in the Light. In so doing she was able to forgive. The healing took some inner digging to find her true self, yet the wonder of it all is that we all have that same ability. With the help of her co-author, Cheryl Long Riffle, they have created a "sleeper" of a book that will stay around for a long time.

In Through Spiritual Eyes we are led along with the author, Carole Sletta, on her journey to expanded spiritual awareness. The idea that two spirit guides would choose to speak to Carole and ask her to write a book is most amazing. I would like to be chosen for such a task, but since that is not my path, I am in awe of her persistence in getting this book published and the gentle words of Cameron and Rachelle into print. The simple and beautiful phraes like "rejoice in who you are" and "compare yourself to no one" are like pearl dropped from on high at a time on earth when so many of us want to be someone we are not.

Carole shares her own experiences at the end of each chapter. This gives the reader insight into her growth as she moves from someone with a secret past to an enlightened human being accepting her life for what it is, a truly amazing journey.

Cameron and Rachelle address a great number of subjects and some are so controversial they knock your socks off! Maybe there is truth in what they are saying and it is time to evolve our earth ways. The guides tell us we are complete, whole and perfect as we are. Is that not reason to rejoice? A good read over and over again.

This is not a book for the faint at heart. This is more of a "fasten your seat belt and hang on" kind of book. One that will finally set the records straight and set you free in the process.

Most everything you have ever been taught through your parents, churches, etc., will come apart at the seams. All your questions that you were told not to ask or were given some mumbo jumbo as an answer will unfold in truth, right before your eyes.

And the beauty of it is, you will know it's the truth because, as both Cameron and Rachelle say throughout this book, we all have our own answers and know when the truth is being spoken.

Enjoy, and start living the truth that you knew was there all along.

Coauthors Cheryl and Carole take us on a very calming, spiritually uplifting journey. Though some may dismiss books that bring us messages from places other than earth, Through Spiritual Eyes is a cut above the current crop of inspirational tomes. The words of angels Cameron and Rachelle settle on the mind like a hot cup of tea on a cold winter day. The reader can expect to discover both comfort and thought-altering observations within the pages. My favorite chapter, 21, deals with pets and their "work" in our homes and hearts. An excellent read. Whatever your journey, if this book ( or this review) has crossed your path, then you are meant to read this book and be re-energized by these divine communications.

TOO LONG A SACRIFICE is an admirable model of the editing of literary works of importance. The editors' knowledge of the subjects and their place in history (political, art and otherwise), the care with which they present the text, and the extensive and informative notes which clarify persons and events mentioned, are impressive. However important Quinn may be, my impression of him is not very positive. He seems to be, in spite of his status as a patron, protector and promoter, an opportunistic user of people. He appears to be communicating primarily as an effort to elicit responses that will have future literary value - he is writing with an eye to posterity's perception of him - he is less interested in the person than in the person's observations, statements and assessments. His words seem disassociated from a human, humane interest in his correspondent. While a degree of personal reserve may be expected, his reserve seems cold and calculated. I felt this strongly in the earlier ON POETRY, PAINTING AND POLITICS (The Letters of May Morris and John Quinn) {Janis Londraville's previous work on Quinn}. Mrs. Londraville's scholarly and graceful editing is wonderful. She does not intrude her assessment of the man into the book, making it possible for me to dislike him all on his own! I recommend both these books for all readers interested in the linked worlds of Irish history, literature and tragedy, seen through the filter of a careful, American, would-be Walpole.

These writers go to the essence of their subjects presenting them as human being not just icons of their time. Please check out the other books by these authors who capture others from the Irish connections

TOO LONG A SACRIFICE is an essential guide to Irish arts and letters as well as an intriguing glimpse into the daily lives of early twentieth century literati. Between the dark wit of Irish American lawyer and art patron John Quinn and the passionate observations of political activist and feminist Maud Gonne, these letters open a window onto a private world where such literary luminaries as Joyce, Pound and Yeats were also friends. Through this collection of correspondence, historian Janis Londraville and SUNY Potsdam Professor Richard Londraville, who both spoke at the W.B. Yeats Society of the Palm Beaches this May (99) in Florida, have offered modern readers a passport into the minds and times of these two influential figures. Whether these letters were written from a train station in Paris, a country house retreat in West Ireland, or a law office in bustling turn of the century New York, I felt as if I was there as Gonne and Quinn corresponded about the effects of war, the possibilities of art, and the hopes of an independent and united Ireland. Since these letters were not penned for personal gain or public perusal, their candor is refreshing, especially as they speak of people who worked only for the blessing of history, not celebrity. That understanding - of how art continues to exist, often at great personal cost, because of some inner dedication instead of adulation - is just one of the many lasting insights from this book. It's an epistolary treat

Because of my interest in early twentieth century art, I have read some of John Quinn's letters before, and I'm familiar with his biography by Benjamin L. Reid. What fascinates me about this new book of letters is that Quinn seems so interested in and concerned about Maud Gonne, her various interests, and her children. He is usually less sensitive. The notes at the end of the text are another book in themselves, and very helpful to me in my own research about several sculptors, including Gaudier-Brzeska and Brancusi. Although Irish history is not my area of expertise, I liked eavesdropping on Maud Gonne when she wrote to Quinn about the Irish political situation and, especially, about the starving Irish children. I never really understood before what England had done.

TOO LONG A SACRAFICE casts light on the world in which Maud Gonne, John Quinn, and W.B. Yeats lived and worked. There has been such a proliferation of material about Yeats and his circle that I didn't expect much that was new in these letters. But as I read Maud Gonne's correspondence with John Quinn, I felt for the first time that she was a special individual and not simply a function of Yeats's verse. She writes frequently about Yeats, his poetry, and their mutual friends; but she also writes of her own life, aand of her own ideas abut art, literature, and politics. I didn't always agree with her views, but I was delighted to know, at last, how SHE felt. The editors claim that "the seriousness of Gonne's views is both diminished and enhanced by [Yeats's] poetry" and that "it has become almost impossible for us to see her other than through the lens of his verse." But these letters allow me to hear Maude Gonnes' own voice. She speaks as a firebrand who hates everything English, and yet is also a healer and a humanitarian. (I learned that she nursed the wounded in France during WWI, and she, with Quinn's financial support, fed starving children in Dublin). Quinn was a powerful man, the patron and friend to many of the important writers and artists of the twentieth century. I'm given the impression that he was acerbic at times, temperamental, and perhaps obsessive compulsive. Still, his letters to Maud Gonne are charming and packed with information about famous people he knwe, from Theodore Roosevelt to james Joyce, from Woodrow Wilson to John Millington Synge, from the entire Yeats family to artist Gwen John and Pablo Picasso. The editors are to be commended for their efforts to keep a balance between meticulous scholarship and concern for the non-specialist. I particularly appreciated the useful introductions to eaach section.

Toy Boat is a simple story enhanced wonderfully by the vibrant illustrations of Loren Long.

My son loved the tale of the boat and was intrigued when it was lost in the churning waters with the big boats. He also loved the conclusion, when the boat returns to the open hands and heart of his young boy. The illustrations take this story to a much higher level. Together, the text and artwork make for pure enchantment.

Toy Boat is a great book for every little boy to own. It is sure to be a favorite of your little guy. It is a wonderful gift to give also. Children need books a lot more than those toys that end up broken and unplayed with. Sign the inside page and he will remember whom it was from forever !
