In 1860, 77 Japanese, all anti-foreign and opposed to opening their country to thw world were sent to Washington to spend 10 months with the people they habitually referred to as "the hairy ones" or "the barbarians", the people of the United States. They received a warm welcome. To the Americans, the two-sworded, top-knotted Japanese might easily have been creatures from another planet. This is the story of the wining and dinning of those Japanese visitors as they were paraded through San Francisco, Washington, Baltimore, Philadelpia, and New York. Fantastic happenings, but most people don't even know of them. This book is wonderfully illustrated, however I don't know by whom.

This is a truly beautiful book in every sense of the word. If you have ever admired the Absolut ads in magazines then you will love this book. It includes the best and most creative ads, along with the ones that never made it into magazines. The narrative is just as interesting. This book includes the stories behind the ads including the imaginative people who come up with the designs, the photo shoots, and other fascinating anecdotes. This is a beautiful coffee table book that neither you nor anyone visiting your home will be able to put down.

Familiar songs and some new ones too.

You will immediately recognize songs like The Wheels on the Bus or Row, Row, Row Your Boat, but have you heard of Peter Hammers or I Hear Thunder? I have fun memories of teaching: Six Little Ducks and cutting out little duck visuals in college until late in the night. This book brought back memories of teaching and really will encourage learning.

The book/tape set is nice because children can learn the songs before they can even read. Later, they can read the book and teach their friends the fun rhymes. Children will especially enjoy: She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain. Down by the Station sounded very familiar and I was wondering if my mother might have had fun singing this to me when I was a young child. I thought I heard her voice in the song, well, in the back of my mind while it was playing.

Nice English flavor and accents. The rhymes encourage playfulness and silliness. Oh, to be a kid again! Children are comforted by music and there is no reason you couldn't sing some of these songs to a baby. Some of them are quite funny because the singers improvise a bit. I really don't remember the ending to Row, Row, Row Your Boat and here it has three verses.

The pictures show how to act out the rhymes so this not only becomes an exercise manual for kids ;), it also serves as a babysitter.

You might also enjoy Nursery Rhymes by Debi Gliori and Playtime Rhymes (a similar book/tape set).

The Most Fun in an Historical Novel

Midnight Son leaves the plantation and his family under the cover of night on a horse named Dohomey his Father provided for him for this purpose. The story follows Midnight on his journey to Mexico where he has freedom and then back into America as part of a cattle drive. We follow this 13 years old as he winds up on a ranch and eventually becomming a cowpoke.

We read this story out loud as a family with our 8 and 10 year old grandson and granddaughter. Both loved Midnight's adventures and I loved all it was teaching them about the last years of slavery in America and the life of a cowboy. Midnight is a very brave young man who shows great courage as well as helping so clearly teach children about life in the 1860's as America struggled with the issue of slavery. If you remove all the marvelous history lessons intergrated in the story, you still have a very compelling main character and a great adventure story.

Midnight Son's story is a wonderful book to share with your children.

An informative compilation of ten scholarly essays
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-13
Africa & Africans In Antiquity is a fascinating and informative compilation of ten scholarly essays surveying and showcasing historical research and archaeology currently underway in Egypt, North Africa, the Sudan, and the horn of Africa. The contributors take issue with Afrocentric scholars with regard to the racial makeup of the Egyptian populations of antiquity. What emerges is the picture of a region that was an ethnic and cultural mosaic populated by Phoenicians, Berbers, Greeks, Egyptians, and Nubians. Africa & Africans In Antiquity is an impressive and very highly recommended contribution to Egyptology, archaeology, and antiquarian studies.

AFTER LEWIS & CLARK: THE FORCES OF CHANGE, 1806-1871 may look like another history coverage, but it's much more: it features over sixty drawings, paintings and prints from the Gilcrease Museum in Oklahoma, and the works of artists who accompanied the explorers to capture history in the making. Early landscapes, pivotal moments, and the works of notable American artists are presented in full color to display forts, Native Americans, and countryside alike.
