Satan RevealedReview Date: 2005-05-28
A must have for your library!Review Date: 2002-10-18
It provides the reader with a concise portrait of God's "covering cherub", from his creation to his fall, to his demise. It details his purpose, as well as his "motives and methods" of operation.
There is an index of Scripture allowing the reader to not only verify the author's information, but also to mark them in their own Bibles for further study and reference.
It is a work of theological art; a masterpiece; a substantial piece of spiritual meat that equips the reader with marvelous weaponry with which to "stand, and having done all stand".
A definite "must have" for the library of every Christian.

THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS by C. S. LewisReview Date: 2008-01-27
Lewis does not propose any concrete doctrine on devils here, and this is not his point. Rather he focuses on highlighting the ways, both large and small, that Christians are distracted from God. Lewis explores the dangers of not being purposeful toward God and life, as well as what happens to people when they give in to temptation.
The book is presented as a collection of letters, all from Screwtape to Wormwood. But Lewis does a good job of making the conversation not feel one-sided, and he does a fantastic job with the devils' personalities. In fact the book is rather deeper than this, as there are two other plots going on. First is the fate of Wormwood's man. Second is the relationship between the devils, and the fate of Wormwood.
The Screwtape Letters is deeper than it appears, and is thoroughly thought-provoking. Most every reader will find elements in it to which he or she can relate. Christians of all maturity levels can benefit from this book.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Poking fun at the Devil!Review Date: 2007-07-22
"The devill... that prowde spirite... cannot endure to be mocked." -- Thomas More
Here Lewis does his best to make fun of the devil by means of an imagined exchange of letters between an "apprentice" devil and his mentor, an old seasoned demon named Screwtape. The letters tell as much about human beings as they do about the wiles of the devil, and have been justly famous and loved by Christians since their first publication in 1943.

Here's a balanced, no-agenda look at an unusual organizationReview Date: 1998-10-22
What I appreciated was learning of the long and deep spiritual roots of the practices presented through MSIA, and the history of the organization that seemed to me to neither play up or play down any part of the story. It is a fascinating objective academic study, not a tabloid tell-all.
Pick apart the book on its literary merits. Leave the personalities and the politics out of it.
I liked the book. I found value in it. I think people who are interested in non-traditional religions - or just in an interesting story of a contemporary spiritual movement will like it too. It's readable. The author is well versed in both the field of spirituality/religion and the specifics of this organization. He presents the story with taste, humor and clarity. What more can one ask of any book?
A lucid, scholarly, imminently readable and useful study.Review Date: 1998-11-30
If you are at all curious about what all the talk about John-Roger has been about, or if you are looking for an experience-based, genuine teaching to "lean into" but are wary of hucksters, ego-maniacs, and others scary points of call, I highly recommend Dr. Lewis's book as a good starting point. If you are doing research on the various so-called new religious movements of the latter 20th Century, you couldn't find a better mentor or example to emulate. And if you are a parent or member of the clergy (I am both), whose child or parishoner has pursued an interest in MSIA, this book should do much to allay your fears and perhaps offer some reassurance.
With his impeccable credentials and breadth and depth of study in both Western and Eastern practices, Jim Lewis is someone who can tell you what some of us have known for many years but could not put so well on paper for a general readership. Here is a scholar not afraid to immerse himself in his subject, allow himself to actually experience what he studies, and then stand back and faithfully report his findings in an appropriately objective way that also expresses great humanity.
As a fellow educator, researcher, and writer with a 30-year background in "New Age" and esoteric/mystical practices here in the West, I take my hat off to Dr. Lewis. Jim, you set a high standard for all of us, and I am especially grateful as a student in MSIA to be able to encounter this subject area through a more objective viewpoint. This book is a great gift and makes a great gift. Thank you.

The Poet Finds His VoiceReview Date: 2006-07-10
"Shades of Love" is a multifaceted offering; it perhaps serves best as an expression of warmth and devotion to be shared with a loved one, particularly another who values family and a personal relationship with God. This uninhibited poetry clearly reveals in love's light what many feel and have not yet found a way to say with their own words.
One comes away feeling that Mr. Lewis has more verse inside than he can easily place on paper. As I reflected on some of these poems, I found myself thinking of E. B. Browning's work. It will be most interesting to watch the course of his writing endeavors.
Filled with emotions that accompany loveReview Date: 2007-06-15
When you are in love, your emotions run the gamut, from delight to deep pain. David A. Lewis expresses all this and much, much more in his book "Shades of Love." The love he speaks of varies from mate, to family, to God.
When we first fall in love we are giddy with excitement. We want to run through the streets singing and shouting out our loved one's name, declaring our love where everyone can hear. In "I sing to you," Mr. Lewis expresses just that feeling, "Even standing in a crowd." Our love matures with time, "Growing with each passing day." "Ultimate Paradise" paints a picture of the desire we have for our lover; our hearts pound, our bodies bond. Lewis describes the pain of loss and how it lessens with time. Our darkness turns to sunshine in "As the Darkness Falls." "What is Love?" describes love as more than a giddy feeling "Love is a menace, for it hurts when it's lost."
David A. Lewis is a tremendously gifted poet. I found his work moving. "Ultimate Paradise" is one of the most expressive poems I've ever read. The passion that lies beneath the words is evident. I was greatly touched by several of the poems that speak of the great pain of losing someone you love but also of the wonder and joy of knowing that person is "In Heaven's Arms." I was impressed with the way David A. Lewis expressed his beliefs. He speaks with reverence of a personal relationship with God. "He Blessed Me" speaks in wonder of the way we have been blessed. The title of this book is very appropriate for Mr. Lewis eloquently describes the many emotions that attend love. I want share these poems with someone I love, curled up in front of a fire on a winter's eve. "Shades of Love" would make a wonderful gift.
