I'm not Jewish, but very interested in Judaism. I found this book to be very affirming, offers hope and generally presents a warm, nurturing and spiritual approach to Judaism. Absent is a negative, blaming or punitive perspective. I highly recommend it!

This is a wonderful book that opens your heart and soul to the possibilities of a richer life as a Jew. What is useful in the 21st century, what is authentic Judaism, and how to deepen your relationship with the Eternal (no matter what comes). What is beautiful will not perish if we all hearken to the wisdom of this work.

Wonderful Start to A Fabulous New Series for Young Readers
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-03
When Sam, Jo, Matthew, and Katie find out about their school's volunteer project, they can't wait to get started. And, being the avid animal lovers that they are, the four of them decide to start The Petsitters Club - a club where each member actually watches someone's pet for a few days, or just where they help the owner look after the pet, like walking it for them, and stuff like that. However, when their first job comes along, they're a bit confused, for Mrs. Jones has asked them to watch a kid named Jilly. But they're petsitters, not babysitters. Soon the four youngsters find, however, that Jilly isn't a kid, but rather a goat. A goat who's looking for a lot of trouble.

I adore animals, and I've always thought that it would be fun to have my very own petsitters club, so Tessa Krailing's new series THE PETSITTERS CLUB is right up my alley. Sure it's for younger readers, but the series couldn't be more adorable. The characters are all wonderful, and have their own quirky personalities, while the black and white illustrations by Jan Lewis help your imagination out, in the sense that you get a great picture of what the characters look like. It's wonderful to see an author create a series about children who love animals, and take care of them, as it will teach young readers the responsibilities of pet care. A must have.

My daughter loved this book and finished the book in 4 days. She could not put the book down and immediately asked for the next book in the series. The language is grammatically correct(not based on slang) and age appropriate.

All the known recordings are mentioned, plus the service that via internet updates with new infomation will follow. The writers of this Bible are all experts in Jazz and especialy about John Coltrane. Lewis Porter did the editing.
I am glad to have this book in my collection.

The motherlode of all Coltrane discographies
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-15
There are a handful of Coltrane scholars around the planet who are recognized as the authorities on John Coltrane. Lewis Porter (who is one of them), well-known jazz scholar and jazz artist, gathered most of the true heavyweights together for this definitive guide to Coltrane's life and work.

This book encompasses, updates, expands upon and supersedes Fujioka's "John Coltrane: A Discography And Musical Biography".

If you are simply looking for a biography of Coltrane, I would recommend Porter's "John Coltrane: His Life And Music" [U of Michigan Press].

If, on the other hand, you want every bit of information there is about every recording ever made by Coltrane, including concert recordings that circulate among music traders, this is the book of your dreams. Until (and if) this book is ever updated, it is the definitive guide to Coltrane's work. Nothing else, save the Fujioka, even comes close.

Excellent Reading
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-08
Read right from the journals, alternating between Lewis and Clark (and so designated), their account of discovery, bravery, survival, not to mention sheer luck at times. This book cannot replace the editorials and depth of "Undaunted Courage" by Stephen Ambrose; but it is very enjoyable and informative to read directly from the authors of this historic expedition. I am amazed at everything they accomplished (including finding the time and energy to write journal entries).

John Bakeless takes the journals of both Lewis and Clark and edits them into this fascinating, primary account. He concentrates mainly on thejournal entries for the journey to the Pacific. This is a good, well-priced shortened version of the journals, with only the highlights, for Lewis and Clark fans.

A Jewel of a Historical Account

Review Date: 2006-10-05
I picked this book up over the summer (2006) while traveling through 12 states in 12 days (Western and upper Mid-west)- I think I picked this up while visiting Mount Rushmore. Anyway I started reading this book during some of this trip and I found it so interesting that I could not put it down. After I finished reading this and having told some of my co-workers about several parts of the book while I was reading it one of them asked to borrow it and another one went ahead and bought his own copy. If you love non-fiction, biographical, historical books that have an edge of exitement this one is for you and I highly recommend it. Honestly this is one of the top 10 books I have read and I have read a lot!

The record of a great American exploration
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-15
This is the record of one of the great exploratory journeys in American history. Following the Louisiana Purchase President Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis to undertake a voyage through the vast newly acquired territory of the West. He invited to join him William Clark and their mission of thirty- three set out on their great adventure. They would in the course of it meet with many dangers and get through them all. Their guide the Indian woman Sacajewa and her husband Charbonneau were important in helping them . They met with many obstacles but displayed inveterate courage . In December 1803 Lewis would write in his journal of 'the joy' of seeing the ocean.
The achievements of their voyage according to Wikipedia of great historical significance.

"The U.S. gained an extensive knowledge of the geography of the American West in the form of maps of major rivers and mountain ranges
Discovered and described 178 new plants and 122 species and subspecies of animals (see List of species described by the Lewis and Clark Expedition)
Opened American fur trade in the West
Paved the way for peaceful relations with the Indians
Established a precedent for Army exploration of the West
Strengthened the U.S. claim to Oregon Territory
Focused U.S. and media attention on the West
Produced the first literature about the West (the Lewis and Clark diaries)
Made themselves heroes throughout the country and big names in Early American History
Helped show pioneers some of the Oregon Trail."

Their diaries are a record of the journey and a classic document of the great American jouney in opening up a continent.

Nothing Else Comes Close

Review Date: 2001-01-09
The Journals of Lewis and Clark are about as fundamental a Western American treatise as you will find. Tackling this leviathan is a daunting challenge but one with great rewards. Clark copied Lewis word for word on many entries so it takes true dedication to read every word of the text. Throw in the maps, the preparatory work of Lewis and related ephemera for good measure. This will not only require a huge investment in time but several feet of book space. At [the price] per volume you will also limit out your credit card. Is it worth it? No other work can provide the background for understanding the ensuing growth of the West. Every single day of the journey is accounted for and there are tediously detailed accounts of the geography and navigational coordinates. Be prepared for some of the most creative spelling ever recorded. Once read it is an experience never to be forgotten and you will not regret the effort.

This volume details the thoughts of Lewis and Clark, and others as they determine which major waterway to follow to the Great Falls of the Missouri, their first significant obstacle. The portage around the great falls is more than they imagined, and is explained in great detail. It explores the many new discoveries in the interior of what is now central and western Montana. This volume also further expounds the growing problems with the unpredictable 'white bear', and the harshness of spring and summer weather in Montana.

During the period covered by this volume, Lewis and Clark were beyond the portage around Great Falls. During the time described in the subtitle to this volume, July 28 - November 1, 1805, L&C were leaving Three Forks, crossing the continental divide, and meeting the Shoshone Indians, with whom they traded for horses with which to cross the Bitteroot Mountains. The portage around Great Falls is described in Volume 4 of Moulton's edition of the journals.

A new author in the making

I give this book five stars because of the promise it shows. The author has a great ability with language and at telling a story, despite her young age. I'm sure we have not heard the last from her.

Built in a fantasy context, this book is primarily a love story. It concerns two lands in battle and how love brings them together.

The author's greatest success is in her imagery. She knows animals and how they move. She also using language in a fresh and descriptive manner.

For anyone interested in a story about the triumph of good over evil or who would like to see the development of a young author with endless potential, I recommend this book.

Well done!

I don't generally love fantasy books, but this one is great! It is incredibly imaginative and not one of those books that you can just lump into the generic group of "a good fantasy book." The characters are well developed and consistent with their behavior throughout the book, which is something that is important to me as a reader. This book also maintains a certain level of reality that makes the fantasy that much better.

One in a series of 'elfin' books that does one's spirit good. It's just the right size to put in a pocket - a big plus. Just open it at any page and read the thought and look at the adjoining picture and it helps to lighten the moment. Well worth the price.
