I haven't read the book. But I know of Henry Gross. My uncle Bill hired Henry to find water on his farm in New Hampshire. No problem. Henry went to the property found the spot, told him how deep to dig and what the flow rate would be. He was right. Then my uncle hired him to find water on the property of a dry ranch outside Loveland, CO; where despite years of previous drilling, no water could be found. Henry dowsed over a MAP of the CO property while in Kennebunkport, ME. He found exactly seven, yes SEVEN wells on the map. Through dowsing Henry was able to locate the wells, precisely determine the depth and the flow rates. Those wells were found in the 1960's. At least five are still flowing today. I know because I lived on that ranch.

Toward the end of his life, Kenneth Roberts became acquainted with a Maine game warden, Henry Gross, who claimed to be able to find water with only his hands, mind and a piece of wood. Encountering some skepticism from others, but undaunted, Roberts went on a crusade, writing three books on dowsing; this one, "The Seventh Sense," and "Water Unlimited." He even formed a corporation to find water thru paranormal means and charged a fee for Henry's services as he traveled around the world.
Roberts is an engaging tale-teller, but no scientist. If these books are the only thing you read on the subject, you might be convinced there is something to the paranormal. But consider what Roberts & Gross are claiming -- that, at a distance of thousands of miles from the desired location, a human can speak to a wooden stick and get a reply from that stick that tells him where to find water! If you believe in witchcraft, not geology, and use dried bat wings in tea instead of excavation to learn about what makes the earth tick, then this is your book.
It's also a good exercise in psychology, the mind of the believer, how NOT to test the paranormal, and how we can fool ourselves with little effort. For that reason, I gave it five stars as a glorious example of delusion.
Chronologically, the three books are preceded by an article in the "Kenneth Roberts Reader" where Henry Gross is first introduced. If you really want to delve into the subject, I recommend reading the Roberts article & books in order to better understand them (I didn't, and couldn't understand just how Henry was communicating with the rod until I read the first book).

Beautifully illustrated poems about the real heroes and she-roes you meet in life; past, present and inspiring for the future. The poems are lighthearted and the illustrations have an everyday twist. A good way to inspire children to emulate qualities heroes and she-roes possess.

I was delighted to come across Heroes and She-roes. This book cleverly introduces children to many of the most inspiring characters from history and today using poetry to tell their stories. Greats like Joan of Arc, Gandhi, and Rosa Parks are covered along with heroes and she-roes children will recognize from today such as firemen and teachers. The beautiful illustrations throughout make these figures come alive, and the poetry format is an excellent tool for helping kids learn and remember the significance of the characters. This book would be a great addition to any home or classroom.

This is a real gem as it details countless little known newspaper articles on all-things weird in the state of Texas from the latter part of the 19th Century to the early years of the 20th Century.
I wrote the Foreword to the book and - living in Dallas, Texas myself - I can safely say that if you are even remotely interested in the historical weirdness of the Lone Star State, then this is a book you will most definitely not want to miss - packed as it is with tales of ghosts, UFOs, bizarre looking people and much more.
As for my favorite topics of cryptozoology and weird animals specifically, how you can resist learning about the mystery puma of Whitewright; the story of the seven-legged calf; the 40-foot-long tapeworm that was removed from a child's stomach; the shaggy Wildman of the San Antonio River; giant eagles; a ten-horned cow; and the Lovecraftian pig-baby of Groesbeck.

This is a excellent and concise summary of a wide spectrum of subjects that probably goes far beyond what is taught in many high school classrooms today. In all probability, after reading this book one would have a far better understanding of the areas presented than what most students obtain from a "liberal arts" education at a junior college. It is well structured with a logical format to both the information presented and how best to attack each area. Although ambitious in the spectrum of areas covered, especially considering the book's moderate size, I felt it gave a very good, reasonably detailed review of each one. I used it as the springboard for a more in-depth study of those areas I found particularly interesting. As an example, the section on ancient, medieval and modern history was quite good as an overview but, being a history buff, I used "History of the World" by J.M. Roberts for a more detailed reading of some of these areas. My only critisism, if it could be called that, is with the name. This could easily have been named "An overview of basic and essential knowledge" (or "what should be taught in high school and post graduate school but many times isn't").

This beautiful book is a product of the Chicago History Museum, showcasing many excellent pictures from throughout Chicago's history. The pictures are arranged chronologically, all of them black-and-white, and all of them sharp and interesting to look at. Every subject is covered here - Chicago statesmen and famous celebrities, great disasters (the Great Fire and the Eastland disaster), famous landmarks, and even common people.
This is a great book, one that I am really glad to have found. The pictures are all crystal clear, and have short and well-written captions. I am a fan of history and genealogy, and as such, I love seeing the sites that were looked upon by my parents, and their parents, and their parents before them. I love this book, and give it my highest recommendations!

This is a museum in hardback! This beautifully put together collection of photos and captions span the life of this vital and popular city. This title begins before the Great Fire of Chicago, detailing various elements and people. From there the lucky reader is transported to different time periods through the beautifully taken photos of buildings and places unique and popular for this city. It details the changes Chicago has undergone as well as immortalizing historic buildings that no longer exist.
Mr. Lewis has done an amazing job telling the story of Chicago through these wonderful photos and captions. For the bibliophile this is a must have book you'll want to add to your library. This could also be used as a reference book. This is one title I have no trouble recommending.

I studied this book for my college anatomy and physiology class. Of course, you need this book to study--without it I would have been lost. There is so much information in this book, makes anatomy and physiology a little easier to learn.
Other recommenations:
I also used Martini's Anatomy and Physiology Textbook as an additonal source. This book filled in the gaps, pictures/digarams were excellent.
Also, Leonardi's, "Anatomy and Phsiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations volumes 1, 2 & 3. The question were comparable to the kind I saw on my college exams...

I was assigned this book for my A and P classes at my university. I found it to be quite complete as the previous reviewer said. I also liked the writing style since it was not in hard language. Although some anatomy words are hard at first to learn like styloid and mastoid, I found the text to be easy to learn the information from. I also found two great study guides which really helped me get the grades I wanted. I discovered them from a classmate of mine. They are:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Volume 1 and Volume 2 by Patrick Leonardi. These showed me what I needed to know for my A and P tests. The questions were very good in the study guides because they were asked in the format of how my teacher would ask them. Hole's textbooks is also an excellent textbook--highly recommended.

This is an excellent textbook for first year nursing, allied health, or biology students in college. The material is organized and well-written; concepts are so easy to follow and understand. Very little, if any, background knowledge is required to follow the concepts in each chapter. Overall, an excellent textbook for learning the complexities of the human body, and it will also provide any student with a solid foundation in anatomy & physiology for graduate studies. Marvelous book!
