Brings Haida culture to life

I bought this beautifully illustrated book for my grandson, who is growing up in the Pacific Northwest surrounded by the art of the region's native people. I've colleced a lot of Haida and Tlingit art over the years and was so pleased to find the book's illustrations were both historically and aesthetically accurate. Between this book and the author's Storm Boy, kids can see Haida button blankets, Chilkat blankets, coppers, wooden chief's masks, the carved and painted interiors of long houses, the woven reed clothing worn in past eras, and of course totem poles. I loved the scale of the illustations in scents in the Frog longhouse, with the little girl so dwarfed by all the big carvings and sculptures. I have to say that these two books are among the best-illustrated kids' books I've seen in years. If I were on the prize committee, I'd award the author/illustrator a Caldecott Medal for sure.

Beautiful! Native wisdom and inspiring artwork.

The story is easy to read aloud and the illustrations are rivetting. I bought this for my three-year-old son, but find myself using it as a teaching tool in my second grade classroom, as well. It is very similar to a story my grandparents (Quinault-Cowlitz/Coast Salish) used to tell me when I was growing up. The message about taking care of all our relations is an important one. The story ignited a new interest in volcanoes and pond-life in my son's imagination. His interest in volcanoes and caves became so keen because of this book that we spent hours in the volcano exhibits at the Natural History Museum and made a special trip to Carlsbad Caverns! Bravo Paul Owen Lewis.

Rivers of Thought

Review Date: 2008-04-17
In order to understand the deep sea of Lewis' thinking and opinions, it is necessary to explore the many streams and rivers of thought, experience and philosophy that contributed to that great ocean of erudition. Lewis was a scholar who read an incredible amount of material in the course of his life. Throughout his writings one finds continuous references to ideas and observations that he picked up from the great writers of the ancient and medieval world, as well as his own great contemporaries. Lewis debts to these writers inevitably leads one to seek out and explore them as well.
In my own case, I discovered two of my favorite writer/thinkers, G. K. Chesterton and George MacDonald, through my reading of C. S. Lewis. The book under review gives one an expanded opportunity to discover and enjoy the reading heritage that was so important to Lewis and to the development of his theology and philosophy. Even more, it allows children of a desicated age to experience and drink in some of the great thinkers and writers of our Western heritage. Writers who, alas, are no longer shared with students as a part of what we used to call a higher education.
Therefore, if you love C. S. Lewis, Western Civilization, or just reading, get this book, read it, think it and treasure it. It will be one of the best investments that you have ever made.

C.S. Lewis is one of this centuries most influential writers/thinkers. This book does an excellent job of giving us deep insight into the writings which had a profound influence on Lewis' own spiritual pilgrimage. Even if you have only a remote interest in his writings or thought, get this book. If I could give higher than 5 stars I would. Great!!

As possibly the most popular and influential Christian intellectual of the 20th century, Lewis has generated great interest in his literary and spiritual influences. As one looks further and further into the subject, there is an impossible desire to read every book that Lewis loved. This book (the most fascinating "Lewis-related" book I've seen) collects short excerpts (most are a single page) from writers who influenced Lewis, thus giving the reader a taste of many fascinating writers and making it possible for one to focus in on a few avenues for further exploration in the future. Looking through the book, it's just hard to believe that no one ever thought of doing this before.

I purchased this book because of the beautiful, eye appealing cover. The purchase was made two week after a life threatening heart infection. This book along with that experience has help me realize what is really important in this life. It was used of God to heal old wounds and renew my relationship with Him. Reading this book will be one of the most memorable times in my spiritual walk. It is wonderful. A must to read. njk.

This book is very inspirational. It points out that God gave us our 'self' and we must take care of our 'self' because some day we are going to be givng our self back to Him. And every decision we make, even the smallest, most unimportant decision makes up what and who we become and is what we present to God when he calls us home. This book is very well written and easy to read, but really makes the reader stop and think. It is a very powerful, thought provoking book and one that I will be reading over and over again.

Flowers and Bushes

Review Date: 2000-11-12
I truly enjoyed this book as it unfolds a story that deals with what one would think is the "afterlife". This is centered around a garden that has been maintained throughout the life time of the author. From one flower comes either a scent or a color that represents something that has occurred in life, either good or bad. There are bushes and trees that have been chosen to show how a behavoir, belief, word, act or deed was dealt with while on earth.

The most signficant memory I have is that we have been given everything we need to be successful here on earth. It is how we chose to use each gift that we have which determines our "afterlife". God gave us our "will" and by doing so we have "choices". We need to be conscience everyday of the choices we make. ...because it may bring up a foul smelling flower or discolored bush or tree. Reading this book allowed me to reflect on my "limitations" and see why I must do all I can to do His "will".

My daughter, Lena, 3 years old, loves this book. The title first caught her interest but she also enjoys the story. Gardens are intriguing to her and this story centered around a garden brings so many other positive lessons to light including cooperation, sharing, community spirit, family. I highly recommend this book to be included in any children's collection at home or teacher's collection at school.

Grandma Lena's Big Ol' Turnip is a soul-food picturebook adaptation of an old Russian folktale which is wonderfully illustrated by the fetching artwork of Jackie Urbanovic. A grand tall tail about woman who takes good care of her garden; the biggest turnip in it is so humongous that Grandma Lena, Uncle Isadore, Aunt Netty, and the dog can't make it budge! Who will make the difference? Exuberant color pictures add a whimsical touch to this cheerful tale with a positive message: "Anything worth doing is worth doing right".

Review Date: 2006-10-16
Grasper is a young crab who says he ''feels as though he is going to burst''. The other crabs tell him he is going through the process of molting for the first time. ''Be careful Grasper,'' they tell him ''for when your shell is soft, so is your heart, and that is a dangerous life''. Grasper ventures above the rocks of his home and into a lush coral reef where he discovers a world full of hidden wonders. Lewis's intricately detailed illustrations are enough to take one's breath away. They capture that ''underwater feel'' reminiscent of Grame Base's classic picture book THE SIGHN OF THE SEA HORSE. GRASPER is a beautiful parable about how an open mind can achieve miracles.

I love both of these books. I wish they would hurry up and translate some more, already!! I discovered them by accident and am finding myself giving them to all my friends. They are funny, silly, and wonderfully surreal, and totally satisfying. I keep reading them over again.

In Harum Scarum, I am reminded of Blood Music, the book where some strange scientific experiment goes waaaay out of control. Except this is much less nihilistic, and in fact the story goes totally over the top in just the right way. It's a kind of anti-Scooby Doo thing: instead of pulling the mask off of old man Carlson -- aw, you gotta read it yourself. I loved it. It was hilarious, a total find.

What makes a comic book a chef-d'oeuvre ? Suspense ? Action ? Humour ? Pretty pictures ? Witty dialogues ? Well, everything and much more appears in Harum Scarum, by one of the best European cartoonists. - The scene takes place in France at the beginning of the century. The someday-famous McConey, a naive student, is unwillingly attracted in zillions of adventures : he'll meet a mad scientist, an ambitious journalist, a rather curious police officer, as well as burglars, snipers, lizard-looking monsters, time-travel machines, terrorists and so on. Amazingly enough, this all makes sense in Trondheim's World, where characters never lose neither their self-control nor their sense of humour. This book may please children of every age, and also adults (even more, maybe) : there's MUCH more in this comic book than in an usual cartoon. You'll be amazed !

Neither rain nor snow can slow the Expedition
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-01
The narrative picks up in June 1805, after a night of rain "but it cleared off and became a fine day." By the end of that year when the expedition next wintered near modern day Astoria, OR, the expedition would face rains almost constantly, having a dozen or so dry days all winter, and of those only half provided sunshine.

This year is the most difficult of the expedition (or rather the period covered by this volume). The team meets its greatest hardships, not least of which is choosing the best overland route when the Missouri is no longer navigable. The correct choice (and the correct choice was made) is vital to preserving the goodwill of the men and the success of the expedition. Grizzly bears continue to harass the men (many hunters are treed), the mosquitoes become horribly bothersome, and when game becomes scarce, they trade for horses, sometimes killing the colts for food; elsewhere they trade to feed upon dogs, at first a meat loathsome to the men, but after adaptation and long usage, it becomes a favorite food, as the expedition trades for that article particularly. Many times plant roots and dried fish served as the only food for days on end, which made the men sick, who were so drenched with rain (they built their winter cabins in the rain), that many were too sick to participate in the necessary subsistence.

Here Sacajawea and her husband are saved from drowning by the vigilance of Captain Clark.

This volume provides many instances of bighorn and behavior, pronghorn antelope and behavior, and of course grizzly bears. This wonderful volume of harrowing escapes, exciting scenes of the endurance of man, and the wonderful rewards from severe hardships ends in March 1806, just before the expedition evacuates Fort Clatsop on the Pacific Coast.

A wonderful read for early American exploration, and an excellent resource for the American wilderness at the beginning of the 19th century.

Should be required reading

Lewis and Clark's descriptions of their epic overland journey is a deserved American classic. So many students must memorize the Gettysburg Address or the Preamble of the Constitution, but too few are ever introduced to this magnificent trilogy, told in Lewis and Clark's own words. They were the first white men to lay eyes on the interior sections of the Unites States, when the land was unspoiled, unpolluted and obviously quite spectacular. In great detail, they relate their indescribable amazement to see giant Sequoia trees, grizzly bears and endless miles of barren desert.

Lewis and Clark's experiences are the stuff of legend, but the question that begs to be answered is: could they write? The answer is a resounding yes! The narrative flows smoothly, the descriptions of the animals and landscape come alive with their vivid use of language and metaphor. Perhaps the most vivid sections of the book revolve around their numerous encounters with Native Americans. This book should be required reading for anyone with an history in the history and exploration of the United States.

Heroes Go Home

Before breaking camp in Fort Clatsop, the expedition had hoped to encounter British traders who ply the coasts, in order to buy provisions and ammunition with "their ample letters of credit." These were drawn on the Executive office of the United States, in other words Jefferson, who after getting $2,500 from Congress to finance, he seemed prepared to bring them back to Washington at any costs, including circumnavigating taxi if need be (this is no joke).

However, the waiting for the traders delays them from their start, and their hopes of returning to St Louis during the season are as warm and finally decisive as their previous push to the West. They break camp, return up the Columbia River, and with Sacajawea's vital help, find their way over the mountains where the snows are so thick that trails are impossible to discover. Thankfully the expedition resumes the Missouri, and after averaging 20 miles a day on the ascent (using oar and sail), they frequently make 80 miles a day on the descent.

After such a long and harrowing journey, full of hardships and decorated with delights, the men are anxious to press for home, sometimes not landing for rest or game during their earnest advance.

This trio of books is among the best reads I've ever had of men journeying into the unknown, discovering the best in themselves, and holding to the notion that perseverance will ultimately endure.

I loved the book, a satisfying completion to a wonderful tale.

I got this book from the library, and I really liked it, but it looked a lot different than on the computer, and anyway, it's called Best Friend, Worst Enemy, not Holly's First Love. The one at the library is, anyway. It's the same book they talk about on here, not a different book in the series. Other series I've read, like The Baby-Sitters Club, have had two different versions of each book, but all they changed on those was the covers, and not the title. They shouldn't sell the same book with two different titles, you just end up with two of the same book.

A youth group at church is going to hold auditions to have someone new in the group. Andie has already been promised to get in and is going to accompany Jared's singing on the piano! But Tom Sly fixes Jared up good trying to get in good with the unexpecting Holly Meredith by telling the school principal that Jared and a few other boys where smoking and when that didn't work,he got dirty and didn't catch Jared as he fell off the tampoline and onto the ground breaking his leg. Holly finds out that her most favorite aunt no her dad's side has cancer that eventually kills her. Everything was happening so fast! And after all these years of her divorsed dad's no letters thing she gets one out of the blue inviting her to go and spend the spring break with him and his family. Her getting in trouble for him didn't seem so worth it right now. So at her birthday, on Valentine's Day, she plots against him at the party which was meant to show Andie that he was such a big cheater. Well, her plan back fires even with her fiends', Billy Hill and Marcia Greene, help. Now Andie is even more mad at her. The only good thing that happens is when a girl from her town Dressel Hills, CO drops out of the youth group and gives her the spot in the group but now she has to tell her dad she see him this spring break because of the trip their going on then. At the trip her dad comes making the night complete. She still can't seem to muster up the courage though to ask The Question about why he left her mom, her sister Carrie, and of course HER! You know when some comes and shows you the way back on the path to God when yo get lost, it feels very good. Her person was the very christion Danny Myers. After quoting a few verses and praying she made it through the rest of the musical. After the play was over they would go on to Disney World. There she got Andie's friendship back when at last she saw Jared with her own eyes, playing footsie with the cutest girl in their class. After telling him off they walked together through the park riding the rides they both wanted to ride on. Holly's nickname was returned to her. Instead of being called Holly-Heartless, her old nickname was back to Holly-Heart. I just love this book!! I really was able to relate to it. I sing, I have a crush, I'm thirteen, and I have had lots of bad experiences with friends. I hope everyone enjoys this book as much as I did.
