Lewis Mumford was one of the 20th century's most important philosophers, and the two-volume set Myth of the Machine (Volume 1 is Technics and Human Development; and Volume 2 is The Pentagon of Power) are probably his most important books: the summation of his life's work. In writing as elegant as it is clear, Mumford makes plain the death urge that has always underlain civilization, which Mumford calls "the machine," and later "the megamachine." This is a social structure organized not around any organic human needs, but around the "needs" of the machines that have come to characterize and control our lives. These are crucial, incisive, devastating books. I cannot praise them highly enough.

Nobody writes like this anymore. I hadn't expected the eminent urban historian to write such a brilliant paranoiac tract against the System and Established Order. Although often redundant, Mumford makes a heroic attempt at explaining the current problems of our times, with roots in the Middle Ages, and perhaps even the Age of the Pyramids. He echoes contempories like Herbert Marcuse, Erich Fromm and Marshall McLuhan, but instead of taking a Marxist, psychological or media perspective, he takes the more general view of an urbanist. The arguments are quite paralell, although considerably more holistic at times. One recognizes critiques that were earlier or later articulated by not only Marxists, but also feminists, environmentalists, and anti-Imperialists. There are also anticipations of the New Age Movement! (See Fitjof Capra's "the Turning Point.")In short, this massive volume impressively combines much historical and cultural material in its critique of Modern Western Civilization. Although the tone of the book is quite bleak -- we would all appear to be trapped in this Megamachine, the High Technology of the Power Elites -- one also senses a hope towards last chapters that an alternative is possible. He seems to suggest a New Age style withdrawal, rather than any kind of organized resistance. Draw your own conclusions.

The book contains fourteen short stories and each one is riveting with a fabulous plot. The red brick cover and the lady in the window captures your imagination and makes you wonder what the title "The Naked Girl" means, and then you read the back cover and it gives you a description. You open the book and read the table of content and see that the title is also the name of one of the short stories. It's a story in the middle of the book and if you turn to it, you find a thrilling romance about a young woman, Preventa Nelson, who (due to the trickery and evil of her father) has lived her entire life naked of a real existence.

The Naked Girl: This book had me glued to it. Out of all the fourteen short romantic tails, I couldn't pull myself away from any of them. The stories that really stuck out the most were: The Triplets, Bare Innocence, The Big Payback, The Girl Across The Creek, Pretty Boy, The Wild Rocker & The Farmer's Daughter. The three brothers, Marvel, Kevin and Melvin Russell in The Triplets were very believable 19-year-olds. They were the good looking, rich, spoiled type that thought they could have whatever they wanted. In the process of thinking they were every girl's dream, they destroyed the dreams of two of their classmates.

Beverly Lewis' Summerhill Secrets, Night of the Fireflies is good for teenagers. Merry Hanson's Amish neighbor's daughter, Susie Zook, is thrown into a coma when she and Merry go collecting fireflies in the darkness. Can Merry, with God's help, bring Susie back to life? A great page-turner.

We love this book because the story covers a little girl who is sure she can trick her mom into giving her just "one more cookie." I like that the mom doesn't give in but instead comes up with an alternative treat. But it is fun for kids to read about the creative pretend play the character uses. Is a little bit longer, my 4 yr old has loved it for about 2 yrs, but my 2 1/2 yr old doesn't quite sit still through it yet.

This story will remind you of the cookie monster that resides in all of us. Florence and her monkey friend, Arnold, have eaten all of the cookies and consequently their mom tells them they may have no more cookies for a week! Florence and Arnold go through several plans to try and get mom to change her mind so they can get just 'one' cookie! They learn some fun lessons along the way (apples are good for teeth and bandages are good for wounds). And in the end they get to make something even yummier than cookies and we get to have the recipe too so we can make our own Magic Monkey Bananas! Every young child will love this story and the illustrations!

Florence is delightful. I loved watching her doggedly pursue her goal of "More Cookies" with her sidekick, Arnold, a stuffed monkey. Her determination and singlemindedness remind me of every stubborn five-year-old I've known. "No More Cookies" is a book children will want reread again and again.

NO MORE COOKIES is the perfect book for young cookie lovers! Florence, a young girl, and Arnold, a stuffed monkey, are friends who share a great passion: eating cookies. But when Florence's mother sees that her daughter has eaten ALL the cookies in the cookie tin, she says "No More Cookies!" for an entire week. Florence and Arnold's response, "No cookies for a week. That's forever." So they team up and use their imaginations to find creative ways to change her mom's mind. The plans range from Florence and Arnold dressing up as the tooth fairy and fairy monkey who need a cookie so they can fly home to Florence dressing as a nurse and splashing red paint on Arnold--Arnold of course needs an emergency cookie to make him feel better. But none of their plans--as creative as they are--works. But Florence's mother is not completely unfeeling, the book ends with everyone in the kitchen making Magic Monkey Bananas (chocolate-covered frozen bananas with sprinkles).

NO MORE COOKIES is a participatory picture book with a familiar refrain that cookie lovers everywhere will join in on, "It's not fair! All we want is a cookie--just one."

The illustrations are great. An assortment of cookies decorate the green end papers. I love how Florence is portrayed throughout the illustrations. Florence is first shown sitting down holding Arnold, her monkey, on her lap, and one cookie in each hand. Beneath her is a cookie tin holding mainly--if not exclusively--crumbs or broken cookies. The colors are bright and vibrant, red, green, yellow, and purple. Although the reader first sees Florence wearing a red hat, in later illustrations she's shown with black hair that is very tangled. (It looks like she has either given herself her own hair do, or else she won't let her mom near her with a brush!) My favorite illustration of Florence is when she is sitting with Arnold on the front porch. Both are wearing chef's hats. Both have their arms crossed on their chest. Florence has this pouty face, and of course, Arnold's expression hasn't changed any. But I love the fact that Florence has placed Arnold into the same position as herself. But what I especially love are the "drawings" made by Florence throughout the book. (Kid-drawn art is so fun!) Highlights of some of Florence's art include: on green construction paper a self portrait done in blue crayon showing her fierce monster teeth. Her face is surrounded by a circle of seven cookies. Each cookie has an arrow pointing in the direction of her mouth. The caption of her picture: cookie monster! Another great kid-drawn portrait is done on yellow construction paper. Again Florence has drawn herself with blue crayon. The picture shows herself with a ring of chocolate around her face and a bright red tongue sticking out. The caption reads: "For the most chocolate just lick in a circle." Although I won't take the time to describe them individually, each of Florence and Arnold's plans for obtaining cookies is illustrated in one or more plans done on various colors of construction paper.

The sixth Vickery novel is a victory for series fans

Review Date: 1998-12-03

Cutler, Colorado is a small town where everyone knows each other. Seventy-three years old Fred Vickery has lived most of his life in the town. Since his beloved spouse Phoebe passed away five years ago, Fred spends most of his time successfully investigating, albeit mostly by accident, unsolved murders. When LeGrande Macafee speaks poorly about Phoebe at their fifty-fifth high school reunion, Fred defends his cherished wife by slugging it out with the man.

LeGrande has a history of obnoxious behavior that has led to many people despising him. Even his own son loathes him. When Fred steps outside to get a breath of fresh air, he discovers LeGrande's dead body. His widow accuses Fred of being the murderer and her consistent outbursts soon has most of the townsfolk convinced that he did kill the man. Fred starts to snoop in order to prove his own innocence.

The sixth entry in the Fred Vickery mysteries is the best one of what is already an excellent series because of the deep insights into Fred and his deceased spouse. This turns NO PLACE FOR MEMORIES into a more personal novel constructed around a great who-done-it. The ending is a shocker that seems to be out of Character for Fred, but stupendous Sherry Lewis makes the climax and, for that matter, the entire book succeed beyond exceptions.

This was the first Fred Vickery sleuth novel I have read. I've greatly enjoyed the romances written by Sherry Lewis, so I decided to try this book and am glad I did.

As usual for Ms. Lewis, she creates a main character with dimension. I felt as if Fred were an old friend after just a few chapters. She gives insight into the little, seemingly inconsequential details that really bring her character to life.

I don't want to give away to much, but suffice it to say that I couldn't guess who-dun-it. And was surprised who did and for what reasons.

The story also has a moral theme running through it. Without sounding as if she is stepping away from the story line, Ms. Lewis imparts a bit of wisdom to her readers. I have read other of her works where she manages to weave such things in without it seeming inappropriate. This really makes for fun reading.

I didn't realize it, but there are other Fred Vickery sleuth novels that come before this one. One such is "No Place For Tears", which I am reading now. I have found that there are bits that I can guess what is coming because I read this book first, although it isn't detracting from the story. I suggest checking the issue date of the books first if you plan to buy more than one of the Fred Vickery sleuth novels and start with the earliest.

Enjoy!

Not a Tame Biography

This book is a part of the Leaders in Action Series, which contains many biographies of great leaders throughout history, all of which are extremely stellar. Each book is divided into a biography section and an analysis section, the latter of which is always very insightful. The chapters are short, so reading can be spaced throughout a few weeks, which is very helpful.

But beyond the series itself, this book is hands down the best biography I've read on C.S. Lewis, barring his own autobiography. Terry Glaspey traces three main attributes of Lewis throughout his life: imagination, reason, and faith. Threaded all throughout Jack's life, these three things set him apart as a leader, and Glaspey brings them out beautifully. The man had such faith in God that he couldn't help but glory in fantasy and intellect, and after reading this biography I want nothing else but to lay hold on these traits and incorporate them into my own life.

I would first and foremost recommend Lewis' autobiography, _Surprised by Joy_. But for the facts Lewis left out and for a delightful analysis of Lewis' life and writings from an outside stance, this book can't be beat.

A Wonderful Mix

The book is short and so are the sections. And for some reason, it gives the book a certain charm. You can take a minute or two and read the next section, and if you want put it down. There is a lot of information in each section. The first part of the book is biographical in nature. The more interesting part, in my opinion, is the second part. This is where the editor really shined and his admiration and understanding of Lewis shines through. Each section deals with Lewis' thoughts on certain subjects. It is not really biographical...it is picking the brain of a giant. The book is truly wonderful and I suggest it for all Lewis fans, or for those serious about becoming more acquainted with his thoughts. Would make a great gift.

A truly in-depth analysis of a brilliant yet humble man.

Terry Glaspey grasps at many of the unique features of Lewis that other biographers have not done. Lewis and Glaspey in many ways are cut from the same cloth. They both challenge the reader to go into your own resources of a personal walk with God that remind you of other great minds like Rushdoony, Yamauchi, and Francis A. Schaeffer. The book is worth reading more than once!

I had only read the Chronicles of Narnia, which I had found to be very profound, yet I had never really understood the breadth of the contributions of C. S. Lewis before reading this small volume. Mr. Glaspey does not waste words in this interesting biography. I have not read anything else about Lewis, but I feel that I know and understand so much about him because of this book. This book is divided equally between the life of Lewis and His teachings. If anything was a could be improved it would be that much of the teaching is paraphrased and summarized by Glaspey. I am certain that larger excerpts of Lewis own very eloquent words would have been better. I appreciate the small bibliography of other biographies of Lewis included at the end. This book does a wonderful job of highlighting a christian genius.

Like other reviewers I enjoyed the book. Yet I read it quicker than any other. It is not complex. She sees & recognizes the dream guy from her youth. He sees a hot gal with the sexiest butt and licence IM REDY. In coincidental events they meet. Just as she is ready to leave him,his kiss floors her and arouses deep passion. They go out for coffee and wind up making passionate love as he brings her to orgasm more than she ever hoped
for. In doing so he is also taken in by her brazen passion such as getting
whipped cream & chocolate pudding. She tastes the whipped cream on his
breasts. Then they share both ingredients via oralizing. So much focus on sex, where is the dialogue? And after being satisfied more than he ever dreamed up, suddenly the fact she is a bit younger than he thought
makes her less desirable? Most men would welcome the tight youth. He walks out on her verbally but his drives increase as they are split.
She wanted a sexcape but winds up wanting him more and then making a
commitment to marriage.

This is a great sex-romance novel but one wonders what will keep them together after the sheets get a bit thin? The book is hard to put down as one seeks the climax (sic) or inevitable conclusion. I like something
medium rare. Some may find the book well done, others too rare and most
reviewers just as desired. I find it a bit too quick, too rare. More
cooking would have taken me to 5****. The cover is a turn-on but the
book isn't quite there.

At Beckworth Public Relations, the women are drooling over a hunk from Ashton landscaping. They decide to play the straw game with the babe that draws the biggest having to find a way to make the dude drool from desire. Kasey Braddock wins the contest. Although she would prefer to have not entered, her image means everything in the upscale youthful modern PR office; thus, she grabs a bottle of water to introduce herself to the stud as a happening chick "so redy".

Kasey recognizes Sam Ashton, who she had a crush on years ago when he was the friend of her older stepbrother, but he does not recognize the beautiful woman giving him the water. He had noticed her earlier and sees this opportunity to ask her out, which she accepts. Not long afterward, she remains committed to his drooling one time, but he wants her for all time.

This entertaining contemporary romance starts as a fun read with the office women salivating over visiting hunks while the men are stunned with how far the females will go with the games. When the lead couple begins dating, the plot deftly switches gear so that the audience can see what motivates the protagonists. Of major enjoyment is to watch Sam realize that the woman he is falling in love is not the image of hip that Kasey portrays, but the kindhearted caring soul that she really is though the target of his affection cannot believe he recognized her inner essence. Fans will appreciate this fine tale.

This is a really hot read - good, sizzling hot scenes between Kasey and Sam. She recognizes him as one of her older step-brother's friends, but knows that he doesn't recognize her. He also doesn't realize how old she is - she is only 20 - but managed to graduate college early because she is super smart and skipped grades in school. This doesn't bother her since she plans to leave it at a one night stand, but he has other ideas - forever ideas - until he finds out just how young she really is - then the tables are turned and she has to try to convince him that she is old enough to know what she wants and mature enough to settle down. Another excellent read by Vicki Lewis Thompson.

In the beginning, I sort of worried about Paulene Dawson and wondered would she ever get her guy. She didn't seem talkative or courageous enough to take a stand, but she proved that point not be the case when she went to Ben Drake's job and in so many words asked him out! This book kept me turning the pages and rooting for Paulene and Ben. The two hearts kept running into road blocks, but finally connected in the most heartwarming way! Readers out there, reading this novel will not be a waste of time. I decided to review this book after it was passed along by a friend, because I'm someone who really can't get into reading/or keep reading a book unless it holds my attention. This book will certainly hold your attention from page one to end. I found Paulene Dawson and Ben Drake to be very likeable characters that I could easily get into. At first I thought Paulene was a bit to child like and Ben a bit to standoffish, but connected they were powerfully touching as a couple. This is the most used book in our IT department. Even experienced SQL programmers have found some tricks that were useful.

This is not a SQL tutorial or reference. It is a list of frequently ask questions about Oracle SQL and one or more solutions to the same.

All of the topics are logically grouped and clearly written. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who writes SQL code more than occaisionally.

I love this book, and it's been the source to inspire me on other bios regarding Lewis Carroll. The presentation is beautifully done, fully illustrated in color, thorough, and reads in small sections for breaks. It's a great book for reading at bed-time or on outings. Yes, it's for young people, however it does not disregard some of the more questionable issues between Carroll and Alice. Author simply recommends other reading! And there a pages of maps and reference materials, all of which are excellent. Makes for a considerate gift to any fan of Alice.

A BOOK THAT HAD TO BE WRITTEN

This is about the real life child who inspired the stories:Alice Liddell, and her connections to Charles Dodgson as she and her family then knew him.It also focuses on the Liddells in order to introduce plenty of Victorian history which is presented in a very easy to digest form.
Full of pictures both photos and original art from Inga Karin-Erikkson.
Its where to start if you're new to Alice and it would make anyone want to collect Alice/Lewis Carroll.
The earlier Beyond The Looking Glass by Colin Gordon explores the same subject in minute detail for anyone who wants more
Highly recommended

A childrens' book with great appeal for older readers

This is a book for children (with wonderful illustrations) that attempts to tell the story of the friendship between Alice Liddell and "Lewis Carroll". It is written is a somewhat episodic style. The episodes are chosen, for the most part, due to the bearing that each one has on illuminating characters and situations found in the "Alice" books. The author does not completely avoid the controversial, and this is somewhat of a pleasant surprise. Though originally written in Swedish, it reads very well in translation. I found the book to be both poignant and scholarly (i.e., well-researched), and with great adult appeal for a childrens' book. (Even if the text were less rewarding than it is, the book would be worth keeping for the illustrations alone)

Beautiful telling of the true Alice in Wonderland story

Although The Other Alice is technically a children's book, any fan of Lewis Carroll will find it rewarding. The meticulous art work, showing Alice Liddell and her sisters and Charles Dodgeson [Carroll] and many Oxford settings is superb. The book is also includes many actual photgraphs of Alice, her family and Dodgeson's other child friends. Although this is a book for children, it does not shy away from the rather sad life and obsession which drove Dodgeson, nor does it give an artifically happy ending to the story. If you wonder where many of Dodgeson's plot developments came from [e.g. the Dodo, the wet 'caucus race' you'll find it all here. The author [who also wrote the delightful Linnea in Monet's Garden] and illustrator deserve kudos for this book [translated from the Sweedish, there is apparently a different translation avaiable in England under the title Alice's Oxford Adventure]. Well worth reading in a more adult approach is Staphanie Stoffel's Lewis Carroll in Wonderland [which includes some of the paintings done by Erickson for this book] both are better reads [and far more fun] than Gardner's Carroll biography.
