Carol MacGregor did an excellent job of presenting Gass's writings. Gass appeared to clarify several situations that I had difficulty with in Lewis & Clark's writings in Thwaites edition. It is a strong addition to Coues edition and provides insite not evident in Ambrose's Undaunted Courage. I'm anxious to read writings of Ordway and Whitehouse even tho I understand that some of the writings of the enlisted men may be duplications of each other.

As a descendent of Patrick I found this book wonderful

Carol MacGregor has done a wonderful job. She has taken the original Lewis & Clark Journals and footnoted the Gass Journal. Where Gass said men went out to hunt she names the hunters ect,. His account book told me when my g,g,g, grandmother died and what was bought day by day. I was surprised that so much fish was eaten. On behalf of the Gass family, Thank you for a job well done.

Sergeant Gass was one of the few members of the Corp of Discovery to keep a consistent log of the journey. His journal style makes his account interesting and very readable. Gass's log of daily activities shows the optomistic spirit of the corp and makes this an important contribution to the study of the expedition. The inclusion of Gass's newly discovered personal account ledger is facinating!

More readable than Lewis & Clark

Patrick Gass's journal is much more readable than that of Lewis & Clark - for a start, his spelling is better; he doesn't resort to overblown, flowery descriptions (the notable and ludicrous exceptions are those added by his first editor); and Ms McGregor's wonderful notes flesh out this rivetting story.

Reading this after the better-publicised Lewis & Clark journals makes you wonder if they were on the same expedition - the Captains' journal is more concerned with who they met, making maps and taking measurements - whereas Gass's journal is full of description of the surrounding country and wildlife (interestingly, Gass rarely mentions anyone but the Captains by name).

The newly-included account-book is very interesting and the list of animals killed for food gives one some idea of the calorie requirements demanded by the intense labour these men went through each day, and also making you wonder if there was anything left for the poor natives after they'd passed through their territory!

The definitive edition of the Gass journal.

Mrs. MacGregor gives a salient introduction to the story of Patrick Gass. His life and his own account of his trip with Lewis & Clark make for a remarkable read as we approach the bicentenial of the Corps of Discovery. A wonderful footnote to the personal history of this intrepid explorer is available in the detailed account books of Patrick Gass found only in this edition. For any student of the L&C expedition and the early history of the opening of the west, I highly recommend this book.

Great variety - especially in the art styles, tone and energy - will keep you looking forward to each story. The stories themselves are very interesting. Whether it's epic battle, insightful character work, humorous genre pieces, or even abstracted explorations, these artists did a wonderful job. I can't wait for the sequel!

A fun book. Lots of sillyness, a little romance, a little drama, all from a fan based perspective.
The high point was the film noir/50's sci-fi murder mystery, "Hazzard Von Braun, Astronaut Detective". Purposfully campy, definitely fun.
It's a thick book and a good read. Highly recommended!

I really liked this book. It was a chance for me to see more than one aspect of anime. It also gave me a taste of what each of the artists can do. I look forward to seeing more from each artist. I gave the book to friends and family to read and they too seem to have enjoyed it. Most of them didn't know what anime was, so this was a great introduction for them.

Cheap and disposable, but filling.

There truly is something here for everyone. From the short, wordless giant monster story to the sentai parody that takes itself seriously (Dairooster) and everything in between, you'll get your money's worth of solid black and white entertainment.

You can get a whole lot less for your money from some of the big-name publishers, that's for sure. You'll be reading JUKU for well over an hour!

A lot of love went into this, and the result is charming!

This collaborative work by five longtime manga artists and fans shows that hard work and patience does indeed pay off in the end. This book is a collection of eight separate stories by five artists. There's a little something for everyone here: action, tongue-in-cheek humor, romance, and more!

The gems of this collection are Shaindle Minuk's "Holly's Father," a holiday story that takes a peek into the private lives of a fifties' Hollywood family, and Bruce Lewis' "It Happened in Seventh Grade." Lewis' recollection of a cherished event in his childhood is made more heartfelt by his simple-but-fully-recognizable drawing style.

The other stories included are an exciting detective story...IN SPACE...by David Merrill, quick cute textless vignettes from Ed Hill, a surprisingly twisted parody of two popular Japanese icons by Dan Baker, and one of Bruce Lewis' epic war stories, "Dairooster 5!"

Definitely recommended!

This book was very helpful to me as I explained to my daughter about being a good person of service. The project ideas seem to relate well to the interest of kids and many can be done by the kids themselves. Other projects will require adult help.

I think this book is very good. As we read through the book, my daughter had many questions, as well as suggestions and modifications for certain projects. It was very thought provoking and inspiring.

This is an excellent resource for anyone working with youth and young adults, especially those in the non-profit field. The book provides ideas, helpful hints, and most importantly empowers youth to help their community.

All of the ideas are well thought out. Many of the activities can be altered, simplifed, or enhanced depending on your goals.

There are very helpful hints on how to create press releases, flyers, public service announcements, etc. This is a helpful guide for youth and a great resource for adults.

I recommend this book to anyone who works with youth and young adults that are committed to helping others.

Jim Lewis is certainly a master of description, a scratcher of psychology and a writer who digs hard at the turf of extraordinary people trying to mundane down their lives. The characters of Walter Selby and his son Frank are deeply connected (as is their pre history), yet they are not even known to each other. This is a story of one's inability to escape their heritage or genetics, even though much credit goes into reinventing themselves. In the skilled writing of Jim Lewis, we see a kiss of Wendell Berry and Robert Penn Warren; simply a tradition of the best. Mr. Lewis will make you see the world in a slightly different manner and will impress upon you the need to think, search and reflect right along with his characters. I plan to read his other books and feel graced that I'm able to enter the world of this author's writings.

This is a difficult book to recommend because as much as I loved it I wouldn't argue with someone who didn't, they'd probably have some valid points. Halfway through I threw it in the trash and woke up a few nights later to dig it out and read at three am. My copy is still stained and smells. Not a perfect book if perfection means universal appeal but if you think quantity has displaced quality both in number of books published and number of pages in each book this is the one for you. Jim Lewis is the best author alive in my opinion and has two things most don't - a real gift and the ability to be concise. Anyone can convey a miserable and interminable experience by creating one for the reader but a precious few can do it, or anything else, in one sentence. If 'I know this much is true' was half as long, twice as good, and a little more brutal it would be 'The King is Dead' on its best day. I agree completely with the reviewer who said Jim Lewis makes him reluctant to write by showing what the best are capable of. Robert Penn Warren, John Steinbeck and Annie Proulx come together in this brilliant author. If you like it read 'why the tree loves the axe' if you can find it.

I wish I'd never read this book so I could go on thinking that I could write a decent novel without "The King is Dead" hanging over my head like the law. This is the best novel I've read in a good while.

I'm 15 and all I can say is this book is really, really cool/excellent/awesome etc...from pre-zeppelin days to post zeppelin solo projects and the reunions, it's totally comprehensive, I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviewers - it's cool if you have even one Zeppelin Bootleg, and it's also interesting to see what they have to say about the shows the newly released live material was taken from. My dad saw Zeppelin twice so it was cool for him to find his shows.

So if you saw Zeppelin live, have any live recordings whatsoever, or are just curious, I highly recommend this book. It'd be nice if they came out with a new version making note of the material that's come out since it's been released, but even if they don't, I still feel it's a totally complete edition.

For anyone who has a modist size Zeppelin collection of live recordings this book is a must, It has an incredible breakdown of hundreds of shows including track lists and commentary on the play quality as well as remarks on Robert Plants witty comentary between songs. I found myself going back and listening to many of my bootlegs to see how the author's opinion of concerts compared to mine. It was also nice because It helped straighten out some of the songs from the compelation discs I have, correcting the perpatraitors generally incorrect slipsheets and liner notes.

The book is full of reports of what, where, and when the band played, how good the concert was, concert facts, and many samples of the wisdom of Robert Plant. They even recommend the best bootlegs, perfect for us die-hard Zepp fans. The authors also include innumerable concert photos, many of which don't appear in other books. Any Zeppelin collection is incomplete without this book.

This book has been on my coffee table for awhile and I have noticed two things. one I always have time to pick it up and strol down the river with both the expedition and the photographer. His presentation makes you able to really "be there". Second, I have noticed when I have guests in town, they invariably pick up this book - out of many I have laying around - and will peruse it over and over again. It is a true pleasure to own! I can not wait for Richard Mack's next book!

Review Date: 2006-07-02
In this book Richard Mack has captured the unbelievable beauty this country has to offer and he has done it with the setting of the Lewis & Clark Trail as its background. While this book gives you a thoroughly new look at the trail and the country as the folks on the expedition might have seen it, it transcends that and goes beyond, to the world as we can see it today, in all of it's natural glory. His photographs are superb, and one can make the claim he is one of the best landscape photographers working today. This book is not just for Lewis & Clark fans, although it is the best book I've seen on the trail, with the journals of Lewis & Clark interspersed with many of the images, it also stands as a testament to our natural resources and why we need to continue to protect them. I highly recommend this book to everyone, Lewis & Clark aficionados, nature lovers, photography buffs, or those just needing a great gift for someone. This is the one!

Richard Mack is clearly a remarkable, talented man. His skill in photography, his love of the widely varied American landscape, and his respect for the members of Lewis and Clark's expedition all shine through in every page of this beautifully crafted book. If you love photography, you need this book. If you love natural beauty, you must buy this book. If you are intrigued by the human stories and the visceral phenomena that make up the fabric of every historical event, get this book right now.

Mack didn't merely travel the trail and take great pictures here and there. He captured moments right out of Lewis and Clark's journals by photographing each spot along trail at the same time of year that the expedition party was there, often presenting the photographs with quotes from the journals themselves. You turn each page and move along the trail with the party, seeing much of what they saw and understanding the wonder and awe they must have felt in the midst of riveting views, often brutal conditions, and seemingly unending newness.

I've shown this book to dozens of people. It draws not merely appreciation, but admiration. It's a book you will find yourself thumbing through again and again.

C.S. Lewis was a rare individual. One of the few non-clerics to be recognised as a theologian by the Anglican church, he put forth the case for Christianity in general in ways that many Christians beyond the Anglican world can accept, and a clear description for non-Christians of what Christian faith and practice should be. Indeed, Lewis says in his introduction that this text (or indeed, hardly any other he produced) will help in deciding between Christian denominations. While he describes himself as a 'very ordinary layman' in the Church of England, he looks to the broader picture of Christianity, particularly for those who have little or no background. The discussion of division points rarely wins a convert, Lewis observed, and so he leaves the issues of ecclesiology and high theology differences to 'experts'. Lewis is of course selling himself short in this regard, but it helps to reinforce his point.

The book looks at beliefs, both from a 'natural' standpoint as well as a scripture/tradition/reason standpoint. Lewis looks both at belief and unbelief - for example, he states that Christians do not have to see other religions of the world as thoroughly wrong; on the other hand, to be an atheist requires (in Lewis' estimation) that one view religions, all religions, as founded on a mistake. Lewis probably surprised his listeners by starting a statement, 'When I was an atheist...' Lewis is a late-comer to Christianity (most Anglicans in England were cradle-Anglicans). Thus Lewis can speak with the authority of one having deliberately chosen and found Christianity, rather than one who by accident of birth never knew any other (although the case can be made that Lewis was certainly raised in a culture dominated by Christendom).

Lewis also looks at practice - here we are not talking about liturgical niceties or even general church-y practices, but rather the broad strokes of Christian practice - issues of morality, forgiveness, charity, hope and faith. Faith actually has two chapters - one in the more common use of system of belief, but the other in a more subtle, spiritual way. Lewis states in the second chapter that should readers get lost, they should just skip the chapter - while many parts of Christianity will be accessible and intelligible to non-Christians, some things cannot be understood from the outside. This is the 'leave it to God' sense of faith, that is in many ways more of a gift or grace from God than a skill to be developed.

Finally, Lewis looks at personality, not just in the sense of our individual personality, but our status as persons and of God's own personality. Lewis' conclusion that there is no true personality apart from God's is somewhat disquieting; Lewis contrasts Christianity with itself in saying that it is both easy and hard at the same time. Lewis looks for the 'new man' to be a creature in complete submission and abandonment to God. This is a turn both easy and difficult.

'Mere Christianity' was originally a series of radio talks, published as three separate books - 'The Case for Christianity', 'Christian Behaviour', and 'Beyond Personality'. This book brings together all three texts. Lewis' style is witty and engaging, the kind of writing that indeed lives to be read aloud. Lewis debates whether or not it was a good idea to leave the oral-language aspects in the written text (given that the tools for emphasis in written language are different); I think the correct choice was made.

A resounding, timeless, classic success. A work of genius

Originally a series of radio broadcasts that were transcribed into book form with the author's help, C. S. Lewis' witty and systematically logical defense of Christianity still endures as a favorite today. Although intellectual works of this caliber can seem intimidating, his conversational style of communication makes the book approachable and thoroughly enjoyable. He not only addresses the common sense of Christianity, but also thoughtfully doesn't neglect the practical need, the heartfelt void, that Christ alone can fill. All in all, this book is an all-around, solid work that consistently covers all the bases of thought and makes for a great read.

Mere Christianity is just that - the basics. C. S. Lewis was a man who refused to argue about the details. He placed a great importance on the central beliefs. This book is a collection of various works, and covers the basic elements of the Christian faith. I would highly recommend Mere Christianity for anyone; but especially for young people in their twenties. Some of the most seemingly difficult points of scripture are explained here in plain english. This is the place to start.

I read the book, it is brilliant collection of writings. The editors offer an interesting, sophisticated analysis of the white response to busing. Being a former student of his, I can attest that Matthew D. Lassiter is an incredibly intelligent, dynamic individual. I highly recommend this book, and anxiously await his upcoming works.

A book whose magnitude is monumental.

Matthew Lassiter, editor-in-chief of this seminal collection, sets forth, once again, a fresh standard of scholarly excellence and eloquence. His essay, "A 'Fighting Moderate,'" illustrates one of his innumerable intellectual virtues, the ability to electrify his arduously acquired historian's sobriety with an innate psychological acuity.

A supremely relevant work of scholarship

Matthew D. Lassiter, perhaps the world's pre-eminent scholar of the American South, co-edited this penetrating and resonant collection of essays, to which he has contributed a characteristically elegant and astute study of Benjamin Muse, who figured prominently in the turbulent early years of desegregation in Virginia.

For my senior seminar, I wrote a paper on desegregation/busing in the South. While I was doing research, a librarian found this book for me. I had to wait 2 weeks to get it through interlibrary loan, but it was worth it!! The essays really bring home the complexity of Southern desegregation when viewed through the lens of class issues. I can only aspire to produce such insightful scholarship!

A lot of info in portable form. Better than Bantam or the other lightweight medical dictionaries you find in the health section of regular bookstores. There are some acronyms and abbreviations in the inside covers.
