I picked this up at a book party last week and absolutely love it. My 3 yo son loves anything to do with pirates so this has been a big hit. This tells the story of a young boy in pirate school who goes on an adventure with his uncle (who happens to be a pirate). Each double page spread has a maze or puzzle to complete, items to seek and find, and furthers the adventure toward the hidden treasure.
We read this at bed time and only do a page or 2 per night. Last night, my son (who usually fights me at bedtime) volunteered to get ready for bed an hour early just to get extra time with this book. I'm telling you, I sometimes tire of reading the same stories over and over (most parents can I'm sure relate). This one actually holds my interest too. Since my son is only 3, this book is a little old for him and there are some puzzles he's just too young for. but the seek and find items are enough on some pages to keep him busy and there are new things to notice each time.
This is a fantastic gift item. I got this with "Pirate Jigsaw Book" (also by Usborne books). The 2 together make a great gift item. see my other review if you're interested in learning more about that book too.

This book is about Katy and Tim and how they have to find the Puzzle Town party. They have to solve many puzzles to get there.
I liked this book because I liked finding my through the mazes and getting to the party and finding out who the balloon thief was. I have almost all the Puzzle books, and this one was the best! It was harder than Puzzle Mountain, Ocean, Planet and Jungle. Signed, SYDNEY

This is our first encounter with the Puzzle Series. My 3.5 year old loves it. It really builds up an awareness to problem-solving and teaches one to pay close attention to detail.
As a parent educator, and former elementary school teacher, I think this book is exciting, with good illustrations, and most importantly gets kids interested in reading...over and over and over in our household.

Puzzle World is a collection of 3 of the Puzzle book series by Susannah Leigh: Puzzle Island, Puzzle Town, and Puzzle Farm. Each story tells an adventure while encorporating mazes, puzzles, seek and find, and a number of other interactive games that are suitable for kids ages 3 and up.
In Puzzle Island, junior pirate Sam Swashbuckle and his pet parrot Percy are off to find a pirate badge so he can become a real pirate. The badge is hidden on Pirate Island. Sam and Percy need to follow the clues and solve the puzzles to lead him to the badge. There are many hidden objects to spot along the way.
In Puzzle Town, Katy and Tim are invited to a party but they can't find their way. As they follow the clues that will lead them to the party, they need to watch out for the balloon thief who is trying to steal all the balloons.
In Puzzle Farm, the farmers have gone away, leaving Beth and Harry to get the farm ready for the big Farm Fair.
My son is only 3, so some of these puzzles are a little too old for him. But we read these stories together at bed time and have a lot of fun. This is a great book to grow into, and you can read it over and over and spot something new each time.
I love to give these puzzle book series as gifts or favors for kids parties.

Trained as a reading specialist in the 80s, I have always worked as a classroom teacher. This year I am at a school that has no reading speicialist. I panicked at first trying to interpret numbers from standardized tests. The scores did little except to confirm that there was in fact a reading problem. Then I found Reading Diagnosis for Teachers: An Instructional Approach. It is a user-friendly guide for informally diagnosing and treating reading difficulties. It gave me just the boost I needed to organize and plan instructional programs for students who are struggling in social studies because of reading problems. Through oral reading and comprehension questions, which are part of most lessons I teach, I was able to zero in on a student's area of difficulty. His vocabulary knowledge was more than adequate and his comprehension seemed adequate when someone else did the reading. The informal evaluation led to the conclusion that his problem was with print skill, or what we used to call decoding. The book is filled with a wide variety of case studies on students of all ages. Several times I found myself seeing my students! As money for spcecialists seems to be dissipating, it is imperative that classroom teachers be able to diagnose and provide for the needs of all students. In many middle schools reading is no longer taught. This is unfortunate because the demand in the content area subjects requires proficient readers. This book is a valuable resource for classroom teachers and is filled with suggestions that can be implememted today!

Often Ignored Historical Event

Leigh Greenwood proves his mettle as a historical fiction writer by writing `Rebel Enchantress'. I had automatically assumed it was set in the Civil War. Instead I was pleasantly surprised to find that he had chosen a little talked about era in US History: reconstruction after the Revolutionary War, and Shay's Rebellion. The events outside of the world created by Delilah Stowbridge and Nathan Trent are based on the build up and reasons for Shay's Rebellion.
Shackled by high taxes, Delilah Stowbridge runs to one person who her family owes a great sum of money by post-Revolutionary War standards. She is nothing but a farmer's daughter living on her brother's farm with his small family and she offers her limited but proper services to Nathan Trent's family. Nathan Trent is British born and suffers the wrath of his aunt's and many other local townspeople's dislike simply because he is British. A secret he keeps even closer to his breast is that he is as poor as Delilah. When Delilah lets her brother Rueben know of her plan to help their family, Rueben presses Delilah into spying on Nathan Trent, certain that he is helping the British make their lives as members of a new country worse with uncontrolled taxes and a desire to once again quell the insurrection that had happened only a few short years before. Their relationship grows steadily, and does not instantly give into their slowly budding realization of attraction. The cast of support characters Serna Noys (Nathan's aunt), Lester (a black servant), Pricilla (Nathan's cousin and Serena's daughter), Mrs. Stebbins (the cook) all contribute adding support to Delilah's passage from the farmer's existence to that of the grander company Nathan's world of an early American land owner.
