MANI ... It is not for nothing that Patrick Leigh Fermor is generally considered the greatest living travel writer in English. Reading any one of his books, always a smooth, elegant and intellectually exciting undertaking, is to accept an invitation to the private world of a master observer of places and manners who is also pretty sharp in such areas of human endeavor as history, architecture, music, theology, psychology, mythology, and languages both classical and modern. He is extremely erudite - an autodidact, he says - and his approach to travel writing is strictly literary and sometimes sublimely so. This book, doubtless conceived as a companion volume to ROUMELI, which deals with Northern Greece, takes us to the southernmost part of the Peloponnesus. Unfortunately, the world of rocks and rustics and supreme beauty it describes is now largely vanished, so it is therefore of great value to have a traveler's vision and memory of it as it was about sixty years ago. Always subtle and elegant, the story takes on a heightened aesthetic and intellectual intensity at certain points and in particular locales. For example, the opening paragraph of the book's final chapter describes the writer's arrival at Gytheio by means of an extended metaphor comparing entrance into a city with the act of coitus, and if any reader should miss this metaphor let me point out the author's use of such words as maidenhead and deflower. A further adornment of the metaphor, conceptual and literary, is provided by the revelation that the little island a few yards off the coast, now named Marathonisi and now connected to Gytheio by a causeway, but called Kranae by Homer, is in fact the island where Paris and Helen spent their fist night after the famous elopement. At another point the reader is invited to watch the dolphins scull down at exactly the imaginary line in the Adriatic where the filioque drops out of the creed. We are allowed to eavesdrop on a group of centaurs on the Pelion Peninsula, and a passing reference to Henry Miller and George Katsimbalis develops into a chain reaction of crowing roosters around the world and back again. There s an excellent chapter on the peculiar little village of Areopolis, the gateway to the Inner Mani, where the author attempts an interpretation of the ancient carvings on churches and houses. This marvelous book will be of interest to anyone who feels attracted to the beauties of Greece and its people, but also to those who enjoy supremely well-written prose.
Great Read, but dated.

Patrick Fermor writes about the section of Greece called the Mani (both Inner and Outer) in great detail. There is no better reference for the Mani between the time of the second world war and about 1968. His mastery of both the culture and history of the Mani is second to none.
He is a wonderfull writer, with a story telling style that makes it hard to put the book down. He has a love of the area that shows thorugh in all he writes. (He has now, by the way, made the area his permanent home.)
If you want background on the Mani, this book is a "must have".

The Power of Words might be a short devotional but it is power packed with awareness of the blessings and dangers from our small but powerful tongue. Nancy Leigh DeMoss does a wonderful job of communicating from God's word how impactful our words can be.
This book has changed me and helped to begin taming my tongue.
Thanks to Nancy and God's word.

This user-friendly 4 week study looks at the verses on the tongue/speech in Proverbs. Each day can be completed in 10-15 minutes. Nancy counters the age-old problem of gossip, and passing along too much information, with graceful truth. She offers solid scriptural advice that's sprinkled with personal examples and application. I've almost completed the second week and am loving it!

Beware of buying this book used, without the cd-rom included. You need the cd-rom more than the book itself. Without the cd-rom you will be unable to complete any assignments because the tests and quizzes are in the disc.

This book provides hours of creative enjoyment and is just plain fun for the child, and everybody else too. All will enjoy these books. Puzzle Island is about " Sam" who is junior pirate, and must find a skull and crossbones badge in a hidden chest full of treasure which is somewhere on Puzzle island. "Horatio " wants to beat Sam to the treasure and he is hidden on all the double pages, but you don't know where and must find him! Puzzle Island is also home of the " pink elephants " and you must locate these and how many also on each double pages, with the BEST illustrations! Then in each of the double pages you need to find items from the "Pirate Kit ". These items range from all the stuff, which make a great pirate. A compass, Eye patch, hook, gold earring, hat, telescope and so much more. You don't know what page which item is on so you must remember these items. This fun adventure takes you around the island, across the leafy lake, across a safe bridge, the place where you spot animals and many more. Each set of double pictures also has a puzzle, full of mazes, searches, matching, and spotting. This really is great fun, and the reading level is pretty simple but these puzzles were great for all ages and really great for a group or just some great family fun using creative memory, problem solving and a great eye!

This book is a gem. It tells the history of what Schmidt calls the "liberal" religious tradition in America. It shows us the golden kernel at the heart of what today is often diluted. Kickboxing yoga enthusiasts no more invalidate Emerson and Whitman, than the Inquisition invalidates Jesus of Nazareth. The book is largely about some wonderful people little known today but influential in their time. These fine folks carried the torch from Emerson and Whitman to the mid-20th century. Schmidt tells their stories beautifully, and reading about them is a joy. I can't think of a better use of our time than reading about great souls like Thomas Kelly, Max Ehrmann, and Sarah Farmer.

This is what this book has done for me. I have attended Unitarian churches but never understood how "liberal" ... a political term, it seemed to me ... related to religion. Now I get it. If I were still teaching graduate psychology courses to health and rehabilitation practitioners, I'd include this book as required reading for a course designed to help them deal with the DEEP problems of people with illnesses and disabilities without getting into religious proselyting.

We bought this book when my son was 1 1/2. We all fall in love with this book. The colorful pictures really draw his attention. He especially loves the pages with planes, boats and construction equipment. My son is now 2 1/2 and still enjoys the book. However I would hope the publisher would have the board book verion. The thin pages would be torn easily because we read it everyday. I highly recommend this book to all parents.

Wow....powerful book and a quick read. As a man we sometimes need to step back and take a look at how our actions, reactions or lack of emotional stability affects the people we love. Like a childs mobile hanging over a crib---touch one part and the entire thing moves. That is how we affect others.......

'This Child's Eyes' is a moving testimony of a woman's struggle to find her true self amid the clutter of an unrequited life. Sometimes brutal, sometimes warm, the memoir reveals much about unfinished business and self-reconciliation. Kudos to Leigh for this moving send-up.

Original sales info fails to mention lavish, pertinent, colorful clever, detailed illustrations on every facing page which move right in step with the story. The kids spent much time picking the details of the illustrations and identifying the book's characters.
Ostensibly a Christmas story, I found it more universal because the problem to be solved can occur at any time, and the solution shows that where there is a will there is a way to accomplish things.
The children asked several times if and how Gustav would solve his dilemma.

A Warrior's Heart has sparked my interest in the lives of the Native Americans. I was drawn into this love story between a heroic Indian and a timid widowed pioneer lady. Leigh Ann Roberts does an excellent job of revealing the hearts of her characters, as they struggle to have a life together in a time of hate-filled discrimination. I found that the book touched all of my emotions. It made me smile, it made me angry, and it made me cry. This well written Christian romance would make an excellent movie!

This book is the second by this author that I've read, and it is an awesome blend of history and romance! Set during the westward expansion era, the characters of Caroline and Clay Horse simply leap off of the page and into your heart as you follow not only their romance, but also their trials, their courage, and their devotion to each other and to God. If you enjoy Christian romance with just the right amount of exciting twists, sprinkled with a little history and a lot of heart, then you'll love "A WARRIOR'S HEART"! This one is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This book is about the movement west and the misconception that people had back then that all Native Americans were savages. The book starts out with Caroline and her husband heading west. They had to stop for awhile because Caroline was due to have her baby and the weather was worsening. It is in the opening that Caroline's husband is murdered by cruel thieves and she is saved by a Native American who goes by the name of Clay Horse. He is injured by a thief while saving Caroline, so she feels obligated to nurse him back to health. It is during this time that they get to know each other and she shares the Gospel with him. Of course, this wouldn't be a romance if they didn't fall in love and Mrs. Roberts did a wonderful job showing all the prejudice that couples back then who were caucasion and Native American suffered. She also did a great job working our history as a country into this.
This book is so good that I can't say enough good things about it. It is so well written and is such a page turner that I recommend that all readers of Christian fiction read this.
