When I picked it up I didnt know it was written written by the boys themselves. This made it very original. It makes me realize that every piece of food I put into my mouth has a value X times greater to a starving child.

Written from the heart.

My favorite little independent bookshop, Latitude 33, recommended I read this when they found out I was interested in African Affairs. Melanie, the manager, said that she and several of her book club customers read the book and loved it. That was encourgement enough for me.

I was completely caught off guard.

"They Poured Fire on us From the Sky" changed my life in a profound way.
After reading this book about the Civil War in Southern Sudan, I felt compelled to do something on behalf of Darfur. The story told by Benjamin and his brothers is now tragically repeating itself with devastating consequences to the Fur.

Thankfully, the editor used at light hand so that it retained the Dinka voice, which is the
heart and soul of the story tellers.
You will fall in love with these boys. You will pray for these boys, and you will thank the IRC for bringing them hope in the form of a mentor and friend, Judy Bernstein. READ THIS BOOK!

It is hard to believe that in this 21st century, the atrocities that take place in Sudan are still happening and the rest of the world is blind to them. My heart goes to these strong boys that survive. I cannot imagine my own small son having to endure even a fraction of what Benson, Ben, Alphonso and so many other children had to live during their perilous journey.
I hope many read this book and open their eyes to what goes on in other countries. Let's not be quiet about it... This is a must read for our own leaders in hopes they get some perspective of what international conflicts are really important to stop.

Harrowing. Intense. Disturbing. Raw. Emotional. True. Tragically hopeful. A must read among the well-to-do. This will put anyone's life and problems into proper perspective. It is a tale of survival in the midst of the worst affliction that any child could endure imaginable.

From the heart - and that's where it will hit you

Anyone who saw "Junior Bonner", and was entranced by Barbara Leigh's performance as Charmagne, cannot help but find this partial autobiography absorbing and rewarding reading. Similarly, anyone who saw and enjoyed the best of Elvis and Steve McQueen will be immediately attracted.

This book is written from the heart; it is devoid of both the taint of the popular media and casual hype. The style is almost conversational, as the writer follows different related paths in recounting her various adventures with the three titular protagonists. From her tough childhood to the loss of her son, and the failure of her marriages, you cannot help but respond; if you can keep that lump out of your throat you are a better man than I, Gunga Din.

It provides new insights into the worlds of movie-making and top-class entertainment; legendary director Sam Peckinpah needed a lot of convincing that Barbara was right for the role of Charmagne, and treated her abysmally , whilst Elvis' treatment of his lady friends and his entourage will no doubt surprise many of his fans.

As a London-based Francophile, I would have been interested to hear more of her life in Paris with Roger Vadim, and in London with her husband, but these were all incidental to the title of the book.

But be warned - this is no kiss-and-tell lurid account of an aspiring actress/model's encounters with three of America's successful men. As I said earlier, it is a candid review of part of Barbara's life which will provoke a response in the heart and spirit of any reader. I want to read it again, but my eldest daughter, a devoted Elvis fan, decided she wanted to read it first. OK, I can wait.

Thank you, Barbara Leigh, for sharing your experiences with us.

Fans of Mcqueen and Elvis- Get An Insider View Unlike Any Others

Review Date: 2008-06-17
I recently finished Barbara Leigh's book The King, Mcqueen and the Love Machine. As an enthusiastic fan of Elvis and Mcqueen, her book was utterly fascinating.

There are rare, vivid insights into how Elvis lived in Vegas in the early 70s...how he demanded a very regimented world of nightly shows, post-show dressing room audiences with worshipers, late night parties back in his suite with the Memphis Mafia, a bevy of beauties, and one special girl each night ...who he took behind closed doors at the end of the night.

You'll enjoy a strange, enticing glance behind those bedroom doors: how he was a child, a rock star, a manipulator, a gentleman, an addict, a friend, and a deeply talented but utterly-flawed human. How obtusely insecure he was...and how he couldn't be left alone...insisting his woman sit next to him until he went to bed. How he doled out pills. And shower her with gifts.

Mcqueen meets Barbara at a casting and later lands her a part in his film Junior Bonner, where they begin an affair under the Arizona sky and the disdain of Martin Ritt. Mcqueenloves her in many ways (asking her to move in with him as his marriage to Neil collapsed), and again, Barbara sincerely tells it how it was with a "supe". While Elvis insisted on dresses, Mcqueen chugged brews and loved her in blue jeans. He was raw, and unpolished...but always running from his childhood of abandonment and poverty. Barbara even played a captivating role as messenger between Ali Mcgraw and Mcqueen, until she no longer wanted part of the deception.

There are thrilling moments in LA bars, Palm Springs, New York, on commercial shoots, in France, Mexico at Sinatra's...and much much more.

Also fascinating...all three men knew of each others involvement with Barbara, and were drawn to her, not only because she was stunningly beautiful, but because she was honest with them...and had her choice of the cream of the A-listers. They saw her as a sincere friend, who wouldn't settle down. She was in ways, like they were...living larger than life.

The photos of Barbara illustrate why these men were so captivated by her...she was the embodiment of raven-haired, flower-child beauty. Couple that with her sincerity and hunger for adventure and she was the angel so many men create in their mind.

Finally, Barbara saw all three men once more, near the ends of their lives. Each of these men had fallen tragically towards the end...hard for us to imagine since they are forever burned in our minds as legends. Nonetheless, this book offers unique insights into their outlooks near the end.

I highly recommend this fresh and revealing look at some of the greatest stars. Honest. Romantic. Sexy. Sad. it's all in here.

And her new 2008 audio biography is just as amazing with real people playing the parts. Check it out here on amazon!!!

If anyone ever lived a fast-paced and adventurous lifestyle it was Barbara Leigh during the 1970's. Her story is unique, one-of-a-kind and will never be duplicated. I wanted to read her book because I was always a big fan of Steve McQueen, and on that score, her chapters on Steve are informative, exciting and moving. Although these men are some of the most charismatic and powerful people of their time, it is Barbara Leigh who leaves the most lasting impression. Fame and fortune cannot compete with her kindess, inner-beauty and loving nature. Her story is well-told and is a real "page turner".

As a die-hard Elvis fan for the last 40 years, I bought Barbara's book solely to read about her relationship with him. But I was quickly captured with her entire life story, from her first recollections of her traumatic childhood, to the death of her beloved son, through her overcoming spirit of today.

I easily have 30+ books on Elvis and without a doubt, this is in the top two or three. I was riveted by her memories of Elvis and her relationship with him. Barbara was blessed to know him and she often speaks of what a good heart he had. She writes about Elvis with love, loyalty and admiration. At the same time, she does not sugar-coat the drug use, mood swings and other human frailties.

Beyond her physical beauty, one can readily see why Elvis was attracted to Barbara. One comes away with the clear sense that she is a loving, kind and nurturing person. The fact that Elvis kept in touch with her through the years is a testament to that fact. There are undoubtedly only a handful of women in his life who can make that statement.

As the title of my review states, I bought this book because of Elvis but ended up loving the entire story. I invite all Elvis fans to do likewise. Barbara writes with candor, emotion and detail, the good and the bad, the bitter and the sweet. But she is never bitter. I felt as if I were right there with her through her entire story.

Revealing, but with class: a well-written story from one of the most beautiful women of all time!

As the other reviewers noted, this book focuses on a few years in Barbara's life in the 1970's when she was a young Hollywood starlet making movies with actors such as Rock Hudson, Steve McQueen, and Tom Selleck. and modeling for all the big companies. She tells of her fast-paced work and romantic life involving some of the most powerful men in the entertainment business: Elvis Presley, Steve McQueen, and Jim Aubrey.

While she shared with the public a side of all three men that was unique to the public hungry for personal information about celebrities, she did so in a way that I found to be respectful and loving to these men, without intent to trash their memories. I came away with the feeling that she still cherishes each one and her time with them. I'd bet she's a classy lady.

I remembered watching Barbara in movies in the early '70's simply because of her stunning beauty. I was happy to read her book and learn more about her and her life. There were some beautiful photos of her in this book, and I'd love to see a book published of nothing but photos of her, in larger sizes. (For the record, don't take this wrong--I like men!!)

When I started reading this book I could hardly put it down. It was well-written, as well has having interesting subject material. I highly recommend it, even if you don't generally read books of this type.

If film shooting is interesting to you (and you should; I'm 26 and grew up with cameras, then I move to digital, and recentlly, I discovered the wonders of a darkroom and BW prints) then this book is a MUST Well, the whole series)!!! there aren't enough words to emphasize my feelings over the 3 books of Ansel Adams (camera, negative & print)

If you don't believe me, then please take a deep look at Ansel's master BW work... that should convince you!!!

a great classic, one little remark for the publisher.

This is an excellent book that will help experienced and newcomers in photography. Pay attention to the Zone system that Adams has devised. It will realy help you take total control over your pictures with a helpfull and very creative perspective. The last part of the book (developing negatives) might be ommited by the person who is into digital, although it helped me comprehend a lot about the various Adobe Photoshop features and relate them to classic photography.

One little remark I have to make is for the publisher. The book is printed into gloss paper (all the three books in the series) with a high reflectance index. This results in dificulty reading the book at certain angles.

Outstanding companion to The Camera

A must read. The explanation of the zone system is outstanding. I had taken a number of skyline photographs of Austin which when reviewed by professional photographers got 2 thumbs up. After looking at them with a critical eye on exposure and armed with my new understanding of the zone - I retook those same pictures and WOW. What an amazing ability to move your camera off of matrixed metering and know how to really set the exposure for what you want to show. Also helps you understand the tradeoffs the camera is making in it's exposure settings so you can be more purposeful in changes you might make. A critical read if you also intend to ever move into large format photography.

Ansel Adams was a master of photography but not the most exciting storyteller , in my opinion.

This book is one that you should read as part of a complete education in photography, but there are some long sections in it. The parts of the book explaining Adams' zone system are very worthwhile and great stuff. Much of the rest of the book is only interesting if you are shooting film (not digital), as it deals specifically with darkroom processing.

Read about the zone system here or somewhere else, but learn it. If you are a film photog, read this whole book. For digital shooters, you might want to read only the sections of interest.

I absolutely loved this book. Jenna and Clint set the pages on fire with their passion and the storyline kept me turning the pages. The way Clint
helped Jenna overcome the brutality of her past was wonderful. He was so amazingly tender with her while still sexy and passionate. Jenna's willingness to trust Clint after everything she had been through with her abusive husband and father was the one element of the book that made the characters real. If you like your historical romances hot, sexy and complex, this is the book for you.

In my opinion, Promises Prevail was the best book in the promises series and Clint McKinnley was super hot.

Clint has always wanted Jenna, even when she was married to her abusive husband, Jack. When their house caught on fire, Clint ran in and saved Jenna and later to help her get back on her feet, financed the small bakery the now widowed Jenna runs. Clint knows it is time for him to marry and even though he has dated several of the town's eligible ladies he can't help but want Jenna. Jenna is terrified of Clint, he is overpowering in his size and masculinity. In her experience, all men are dominant and abusive to women, so even though he is always helping her she still fears him. When someone leaves a newborn half Indian baby girl on her doorstep, Jenna claims her but knows the town will not let her keep the baby without a husband. Clint steps up and offers to marry Jenna and she accepts knowing she'll never let the baby go. Clint finds out his new wife has been sexually and physically traumatized and he is determined to show her the good side of sex and that not all men are abusive. In short, he vows to spoil Jenna rotten. Jenna is shocked to find out she actually likes sex, with Clint anyway but she still is terrified of other men including Clint's two best friends. She is afraid to let Clint know everything that's happened because she wants him to love her. Clint is floored by the emotions of having a wife and daughter and is afraid that if Jenna finds out the secrets he is keeping, she will leave him.

I really, really liked this book. It was an emotional roller coaster ride, but soooo sensual it sizzles. By far, the best of the three.

I'll skip the synopsis as others have done it before me. I don't care for westerns, I don't care for historical romances, and I don't care for rough sex. This book falls into all 3 catagories but I still gave it 5 stars. Almost against my will I loved this book. Aspects of the sex were graphic and made me squeamish but the story was so excellent I just skipped over the parts that got to be too much for me. I loved the characters: how considerate, loving, and passionate the Alpha male was; how strong and proud the Heroine was, despite her very damaged psyche. It's probably not PC but I gotta tell you, the hero fighting so fiercely for the heroine just turned me to mush and that is definitely not me! If you can handle the graphic sex description, I would highly recommend the book. It's definitely got a place on my "keeper" shelf.

God already knows, but you have to find it out and then be willing to change. After doing this study God began a work in me and brought me to such a higher place in Him. I did this study about 2 years ago and am still reaping the fruit of it. I praise Him for this book and highly recommend it.

A mystery, a love story, a classic work of literature.

After many years, Peter and Harriet marry. Those who have loved them are overjoyed (a feeling readers of earlier Sayers novels share). But murder follows the detective and his author bride-- a body is found on their honeymoon.

I love this book because of what Dorothy Sayers has to say about love between friends and equals. You will care about every character in this wonderful book and appreciate her portrait of life in pre-World War II England.

Sayers' third-best mystery

Others have covered the ground of the story itself pretty well so I'll try to add something new.
I liked "The Unpleasantness at the Belonna Club" and "Whose Body?" somewhat better than this title.... BUT this one is really still just a SUPER classic English murder mystery. The inclusion of Harriet Vane (mystery-writing wife of Lord Peter Wimsey), into the Wimsey series was, in my opinion, a big plus. She really gives Wimsey someone to play off of, in addition to the ever-present and loyal Bunter, Wimsey's astute right-hand man.
This work precedes "Thrones, Dominations," which was an incomplete manuscript by Sayers at the time of her death and was finished by Jill Paton Walsh, who did a superb job of tying up this worthwhile project. (I recommend that you read the two works sequentially!)
So, I highly recommend this fine mystery to all fans of the genre -- it's at least equivalent in pleasure value to Christie's "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd."

Worth your time.

This entry in the Lord Peter Whimsey/Harriet Vane series is a little unusual because it has more humor than usual. You get to see a more light hearted Lord Peter, at least until the murder. Agatha Christi concentrates a little more on the relations between Lord Peter and Harriet, starting just after thier engagement and continuing through the honeymoon. You will have to sit through a lot of letter and journal reading in the beginning, but it is worth wading through for the background. A delightful story.

Lord Peter and Harriet Vane are married. In a series of letters we learn the details of the wedding and honeymoon. Due to the malicious meddling of Lord Peter's sister-in-law and the hounding of the press, the bride and groom decide at the last minute to be married in a small chapel in Oxford. Harriet has asked Lord Peter to buy her a beautiful and ancient farmhouse in the country where they decide to go for their honeymoon.

The adjustment to marring someone with money is a hurdle for Harriet. She buys him an expensive wedding gift that is just right, and with the last of her money she buys a gold designer wedding dress from Worth which suits her dark beauty perfectly. Lord Peter has made her independently wealthy but she has difficulty understanding the details. All that matters is that she has completely given her heart to Peter.

However, the honeymoon is not the quiet country idyll the Wimseys were longing for. The discovery of a body in the basement of their new home causes Lord Peter and Harriet to be swept up in a murder investigation and the press are once again at their door. While distracting, the investigation does not keep them from sharing many deep passionate moments. It does, however, cause them to confront difficulties in their personalities and temperaments.

Sayers writes with her usual wonderful characterizations and evocative style. The reader is transported to 1930's England, a simpler more elegant time. The intricacies of a grisly murder investigation throw into relief the charm of the simple life. Yet somehow this story has a more somber tone than the other Lord Peter mysteries, perhaps because it is the last book of the series. At any rate, once again Sayers delivers prime entertainment and an enchanting detective mystery, only this time Lord Peter is finally in a settled relationship with his beloved.

Okay,This is this best book I have EVER read! I could relate so well to this book because I grew up poor myself. My mom and I actually had to sleep in a car because we had no where to go.I read this book a few years ago and I still think of this book all the time.I had to struggle with buying it because when you grow up poor, you cant fathom spending money on something like a book.I may be 33 yrs old now and not the poor teenager I once was but my poor conscience kept telling me "25.00$ for a book? you could buy 3 days of food for that" Well the adult me won out in the end and it was the best 25.00$ I ever spent on myself.I would rush through my job just to get home a little earlier,to have more time to read this wonderful book.I cant recommend it enough.I cannot wait for more books by this talented storyteller and author, hopefully I wont have to wait for long!

When the smiling younger woman in my porcelain doll making class answered my question, "I'm a writer," I already wanted to read whatever she had written. I was not disappointed. The third doll-maker was Sandy's mom who figures strongly in the book. The family dysfunction painted in the book is familiar, although it will enlighten anyone who still isn't clear on codependency and what children do to be perfect and thereby smooth out family trouble. I wanted to lay the book down when it seemed they had to move yet again, or when the father was particularly cruel. I wondered how on earth the mom kept them all in clean clothes or fed, considering the dramatic ups and downs. The papa was a seeker of instant riches, pie in the sky schemes. Evidently he was also a charmer. Mom and kids followed. At one point they drive off into the sunset to pursue an unlikely plan; hours later they have returned to the home they had abandoned, finding the dog hungry and watching for them. Sandy interweaves great beauty with the difficult passages. She paints the natural scenery, idyllic summer afternoons, love among siblings and mom -- and even the dad at times. They were dreaming such elegant dreams and a few mistakes pushed them into humiliating squalor more than once. There's a hilarious passage involving a snake that the editors wanted cut from the book. I was very glad for the laugh. This isn't just a "how I found my lost sister" story; it's a pithy growing up story about a girl who had stars in her eyes -- and still does. The other reviewers have said it for me, but I wanted to add 5 more stars and say I look forward to whatever this talented writer does next.

Leigh's book is simply put, a long vibrant poem. She brings the hills of West Virginia and the housing of Northern California to life in a way that puts the smells in your nostrils and an empathy for the people in your hear. The characters she creates sourround you and for a moment become your family. I say creates because, though they are born out of reality, Leigh breathes new life into the ghosts of the past allowing all of us a glimpse into her unusually large heart.

She writes in the present, a task that many authors attempt but few succeed, which draws the reader into the story and makes them grow with Sandra and her siblings. Her diction is astounding as she recreates the voice of a young girl. In fact, her words grow with the character and by the time Sandra is a teenager, Leigh no longer uses heck and darn but hell and damn.

One truly astounding realization is that this book is for all people. It is not the cryings of one person for their hard life but a look into human nature and the awsome power that is born out of adversity. We all have ghosts in our past, this book allows us to look back with a fresh perspective and see our own lives for what they are.

I'm American-born Vietnamese, and my parents came to the U.S. in 1975 at the tailend of the war. I have been searching for a thorough Vietnamese cookbook for quite some time. My mom sifted through the book in great detail and compared it to her set of Vietnamese recipes that have been passed down through generations. She kept commenting how thorough the recipes were and how authentic.

What I love about this book is:
1. Vietnamese cooking is difficult, meticulous, and takes patience. What I love what the author does is simplifies these recipes to make them adaptable to American kitchen equipment, while still keeping authentic flavor. Yes, you may have gotten there differently, but you end up in the same place.

2. The intro and appendix chapters to teach you about the foundations of Vietnamese cooking and explaining the different ingredients (how to store them, how to cut them, where to find them)

3. The equivalent Vietnamese names and pictures help me associate the dishes to the botched English translations. Any Vietnamese person will say that the English translations do not translate directly to what the author has named them in this book, but having the exact Vietnamese name helps me recall what the recipe is...and for anyone else, helps you recognize it on a menu to order at a restaurant later!

4. The group of recipes provided really encompass end-to-end Vietnamese cuisine that consist of classic dishes and "Dac Biet" dishes (fancy dishes usually saved for special occasions). From crab asparagus soup to Moon Cakes, each dish brings back all of my childhood memories of my favorite dishes that my mom is now too tired to cook herself.

Bottom line, the recipes are simplified - it's no 30-minute meal - but instead of brewing pho broth for a full day, she gives alternatives of how to shorten it....but also still providing the recipe for the all-day broth.

What a wonderful cookbook!

Andrea Nguyen has written a wonderful, easy to use cookbook on Vietnamese cooking. We just returned from Vietnam in April (2008) and Ms Nguyen has put together a wonderful, comprehensive book that sums up the wonderful cuisine of Vietnam. We traveled from Hanoi to Saigon and never had a bad meal. Ms Nguyen recreated our experience 100 times!!! She recounts the evacuation of her family from Saigon in 1975 and relocation in San Jose. How her family became accustomed to their new life, but continued to cook wonderful Vietnamese food. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Vietnamese cooking...I have made a number of the recipes and they have turned out fabulously. Every dish I make reminds me of our wonderful trip to Vietnam.

amazing book- even for a non vietnamese

When I got this book I had very limited knowledge on Vietnamese food. There is a striking difference in ingredients, spices and herbs used in the Vietnamese cuisine compared to western cooking and the author takes the time to explain all the different ingredients used, how and where to purchase them and how to store them. I found that very helpful! All the recipes in the book are explained in detail and often take more than one page. The ingredients are also very well listed and the dishes are very well organized in chapters. The recipes are very easy to follow and I have been really satisfied from everything I have cooked until now! The author also tells a few words about each dish and its origin and characteristics making the book a true journey into the Vietnamese kitchen (and culinary culture) rather than a mere cookbook. I have a much better understanding and appreciation of Vietnamese food now and a lot of it is due to Andrea Nguen's book.

Excellent for replicating that great Vietnames food.

I was just mentioning to someone that what I like about this cookbook is that it has recipes in it for everyday type of food. Not fancy. Easy ingredients, and very good. Too often cookbooks only have those recipes that would be intended for banquets or special occasions and take hours to make with lots of ingredients. This cookbook has an excellent assortment of easy/good vietnamese food with some good descriptive reading to go along with it. I'd recommend it to anyone.

One of the best!

After reading so many bad Vietnamese cook book- This is an extreme pleasure.

The book was well organized with separated chapter for sauce and ingredient glossary.

I try out some, they all have very intelligent twist that make the original food very flavor full.

My dogs, cats and my family are so happy about this book because it teaches using natural remedies to cure common ailments in pets. I mean, we don't want to use flea/tick repellents that can harm us... so using aromatherapy (in right doses) is so much safer. Besides, like lavender and ylang ylang aromatherapy--going natural smells so much better!

I was very impressed with the information and the format of the book. I don't necessarily totally agree with all the information presented, but it was very well done and I would recommend this book to anyone interested in using essential oils on their animals.

If I were stranded on a island, this book better be stranded with me. You can never feel alone when reading this book. Tara Leigh's distinct tone screams and whispers with a voice and spirit that is contagious! Here's to Hindsight is a full of personality galore. Tara Leigh Cobble's take on life embodies emotion, wisdom and halarity. Her incredible heart seems to "tell it like it is", exposing truth in a genuine and unique way. There is something fearlessly fun about this book, and many times I had to stop myself from making conversation with the pages as I turned. Tara Leigh's words push me to look back on my own journey thru this crazy world, with a eagerness to see the details of God in my life.

Encouraging Read :-)

A friend gave me this book several months ago. I'm just sorry that I didn't read it sooner than July/August. Here's to Hindsight is a great read as the author honestly represents herself as a Christian and details her path. Tara is both encouraging and inspiring. A good reminder that we are never alone.

Here's to Hindsight is one woman's refreshingly honest look at herself and Christian life. In reflecting on her music career so far, Tara doesn't shy away from difficult subjects, which makes her book all the more valuable. It is also super funny - she's got a great sense of humor and irony. If you're looking for a good read and an inspiring story that will make you laugh and cry but still never gets too sappy, go for it. Here's to Hindsight is really fabulous! And so is Tara Leigh. :)

Simply a must ! You will be blessed

Awesome!! This book touch my spirit in a profound way because Tara Leigh is refreshingly honest and her wonderful sense of humor will make you laugh out loud. This book has so much to offer for everyone because so many people can relate in one way or another. Have you ever been in love? Have you ever had a broken heart or faced with trials that you did not think you were going to survive or challenged physically, mentally and spiritually? Then You can relate!! It is a great "MYTHBUSTER" to what some think that the "perfect" christian walk is like, circumstances are not always pleasant however with God by your side you are never alone and He always makes a way through when there is no other way when you trust in Him and this book brings that point home quite nicely.

You will walk with Tara Leigh through times of great happiness in life to being stretched through painful trials, it will touch every emotion that you have but more importantly it will minister to your spirit. It will cause you to think about your own life and leaves you with a question, are you trusting God? When times are great or not so great God is always there and He will never leave you. I strongly recommend not only the book but the CD's as well You will be blessed immensely. Tara Leigh, what an awesome woman of God and you will be blessed through her sincerity, humor and her faith in Christ. If you ever get the chance to meet her at one of her concerts your life will be changed!!
