"Can't Wait For The Next Book!"Review Date: 2008-07-19
is a place of intrigue, dark alley ways and strange people lurking around every corner. The author
of this book makes you feel like you are right in the room with each character - and when the
"Evil One" is watching the main people in the story - you feel you are standing beside him
watching their every move too. You want to yell: 'This is him, he's over here!! Be careful, don't
trust him!!' The author has a way of drawing you into the lives of each person, from the clothes
they wear, the look of the estates, the way they feel in their hearts, how they worry about their
husbands until they return home safely each night from their many outings and rendezvous
with their friends as they try to solve the case. I could actually feel the warmth and glow of the
fires in the hearth at their homes when they came in from the dampness and cold to discuss
their findings each night. The story is one I shall read again - I might have missed something
the first time around, as I couldn't put the book down. I felt I should stay with these 'new'
friends I met in 'Under His Wings,' just in case I could help them or warn them in some way.
Yet, I need not worry, because God is watching over all of them, but still they must go through
many trials and testings.
It was especially eery when the 'Evil One' was watching the main characters, or had some of
his men watching them. I felt like I was standing right beside him - watching his prey, wishing
there were some way I could help them!
Don't want to mention too many things that go on in this great book, don't want to give the
story away because everyone needs to read it for themselves.
This is a wonderful Christian Fiction book, full of suspense, mystery and most of all how
much Jesus loves each one of us and wants us to ask him to come into our lives.

However, someone else has returned from the war as well, Edison's nemesis and a traitor to the crown known only as Apollyon. When evidence crops up that Apollyon has come to London, Edison is once more pulled into a dangerous game of cat and mouse that guarantees casualties.
As Edison and Ellen draw closer to one another, Apollyon's wrath and hatred grows only stronger. Only the Lord Jesus can protect them under the shadow of His wings...
Since I'm the author, I can't be anything but biased. ha. However, if you like mystery and suspense. If you love reading books where the Lord Jesus is glorified then you will like this novel. The theme throughout this series is this: No matter where you are, no matter what you've done, no matter who you are, you can always find redemption at the foot of the cross through the blood of Jesus and the Grace He has provided.

Riveting, Nail-biting, Suspensful, Intellectual Read Review Date: 2007-07-25
Once I started to read MacArthur's book, I was hard-pressed to put it down. His characterizations are really fabulous. Using quick-paced, hard-hitting dialogue, much in the genre of Robert B. Parker, he provides readers with real-life characters, in real-life situations, without any simple, easy solutions.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes a suspenseful read with twists, turns, and surprise endings.

Four stars
William Snow would be supremely interesting to chat with over a nice dinner. or perhaps to take a cruise with out on the open sea. As presented by MacArthur, he's got a smart-as-a-whip mind, yet hardly wears it on his sleeve. Snow is also touched with a peculiar and spectacular psychic gift that seems so pure and so unique in its manifestation that it's arguably a miracle that he puts it to such unfailing good use as a private detective, for he could just as easily use it to promote evil. No, he's a good guy, and if you got him going, he'd likely regale you with tales of his adventures, some more believable than others.
The dynamic central character in Losing Amber-Lee, however, suffers from unrelenting demons; this is the personality element that distinguishes him--and this novel--from other private eyes and mystery capers. The roots of Snow's demons can be traced back 30 years to the murder of his younger sister, and his inability in that moment to do anything about it. Deeply haunted and having never fully shaken off his shame, this is why Snow is persistently, almost fanatically, devoted to solving crimes involving missing children. And it is why, when his phone rings one day and a little girl named Amber-Lee tenderly asks if he can locate her real daddy, Snow is quick to set out on another adventure. This time, though, if he solves the mystery of Amber-Lee's real father--which will probably entail having to save Amber-Lee's life--it may come at the expense of his own.
Beautifully structured and styled with startling economy, MacArthur has been careful not to overload Losing Amber-Lee with incidental characters; everyone appearing in the story is there for a specific reason. This would include Snow's sweet but physically deformed dog, Bradley, and his sweet but distant lady-love Paula--who adds a veneer of humanity to the book as well as a nice breather from the clue-gathering and information-synthesizing one expects from crime fiction. Several other characters are malicious malcontents, and there are several scenes of unusual violence. Yet because these are relatively rare, they don't alienate the reader. Instead, they earn your admiration for Snow's intensity--his willingness to do what he must to help young Amber-Lee.
One of the novel's great virtues is that each time you're convinced Snow couldn't move any further toward his goal, the author deploys some hitherto unseen tactic that somehow pushes things ahead. It's a thrilling skill, especially as no event ever feels shoehorned into the story. Perhaps MacArthur should be most applauded for the restraint he shows in his use of Snow's alluring psychic powers. Waiting for them to be used builds a hardy sense of suspense into the tale, and it's almost always worth the payoff.

Psychological Thriller that Transcends its GenreReview Date: 2007-05-09
William Snow is a man haunted by the death of his baby sister, a death he believes he might have prevented had he told his parents of his dream foretelling her kidnapping and murder. Tortured by this early percieved failure, as an adult Snow uses his gift of precognition to help save missing and abused children. In Losing Amber-Lee, Snow embarks on a race against time to find a little girl and save her from almost certain death. The narrative takes us from coastal Rhode Island to Miami Vice-era Florida, and mixes up the cast of characters with drug dealers, money-launderers and corrupt FBI officials.
The writing is gorgeous and the characterization of the tortured William Snow complex. As well as an unflinching depiction of child abuse, this book raises existential questions of how much we can and cannot control life's outcomes. A thoroughly enriching read.

An excellent book - especially for the kids!Review Date: 2002-10-02
I read this book while staying in a ranch outside Yellowstone National Park. As luck would have it, our first day of "touring" the park via automobile closely paralleled Truman's path, and I managed to read this story aloud to the kids later that night, in front of a big cast iron stove, while Clark's Fork gurgled 30 feet from the door. I'm not sure if it was the story or the setting, but they were captivated! They were able to tie Truman's adventures in with many of the places we had been earlier that day, and it gave them an entirely different perspective of the park. In addition to bringing the book to life (again - what a story!), it contributed immensely to their appreciation of Truman's ordeal, the magnitude of the park and the wilderness that lies 100 yards off the main roads... Highly recommended.

My Favorite "Conard County" so farReview Date: 2004-05-04
My only complaint with this book was that it hinted at problems between Nate and Marge Tate who seem to be recurring characters throughout the series, but never gives any explanation or resolution. Since the heroine of this book was their eldest daughter, and it appears another daughter will star in "Destination",perhaps that plot line will get picked back up. If so, then I hope it is'nt the last book. I'd love to see more featuring "Cowboy" and some of Yuma's other friends and lost warriors from this book.
Oh yeah, it was pretty cool having a tough guy hero named Billie Joe.
A Hero Walks Alone......Review Date: 2007-09-16
REVIEW: Reading this book made me step back into my own past. Having friends and family members in the Vietnam conflict, I can assure you that the problems that Billy Joe Yuma and his mountain companions faced are very, very real. Rachel Lee approached these problems with honesty and grace, and through the characters of Billy Joe and Wendy, we get a glimpse of the real hell that war can be--and of the home front casualties as well. This was an exceptionally good book--one that I read over and over. It is tender and it is hard, and it's treatment of war veterans in a fictional setting is one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of reading.

A New, Fresh Batch of PoetryReview Date: 2008-03-14
THOSE WORDS "HITS MY HEART !" Review Date: 2005-03-07
For this book the author writes poems in a style similar to Hughes' - - each being biographical. These are followed by three pages of helpful notes. Some of the dates make for surprises: In 1914 Hughes protested against "JIM CROW SEATING" in his 7th grade! In 1923 he began an odyssey to learn about the world firsthand, starting with Africa: "going around the world digging life, . . mining for riches" by observing people.
His poetry was influenced by Walt Whitman and Carl Sandburg, but also by the rhythms of jazz. "Jazz makes me sing - - the blues makes me feel . . . a whole lot better . . . hits my heart in the funny bone." The bold colorful illustrations by Gregory Christie are a happy choice and complement Medina's hopeful text. This happened, too, with the 1982 "Langston, A Play by Ossie Davis" for which Jerry Pinkney illustrated the cover.
In the 1950s the specter of Senator Joseph McCarthy threatened Hughes' ability to earn a living. He was quite ill in 1967 when "dear sweet Alice (Walker)" one of the young authors inspired by his works, visited him: " ... she brings me oranges like a bag of sun." The sun can also shine into your heart through reading Langston Hughes' poetry, suggests REVIEWER mcHAIKU.

Love and Care for Our Mamas . . .Review Date: 2001-07-28
Clearly, the poet-anthologist selected the poems with great care. (I suppose the labor was something like finding the beads to make the necklace, the glowing pearl necklace.) Mora's selection demonstrates her keen insight when it comes to the diversity of U.S. Latinas/os. The poems speak to the strength of our mothers and grandmothers and their amazing wonderfulness. Daily, as these poems describe, our Mamas surprise us with their love.
The poem "Abuelita Wears a Dress" by award-winning poet Rigoberto Gonzalez merits re-reading for its imagery, lyricism, and tickle.
This was one of the most wonderful gifts I received upon graduation in May, 2001. I hug this book after I read it to the little ones. And adults, too. Thank you, Pat Mora.
A warm celebration of mamas y abuelasReview Date: 2001-08-18
These poems celebrate relationships, food, bilingualism, and family history. Some of my favorite selections include Cristina Muniz Mutchler's "Mi abuela" ("Many grandmothers like to bake cookies and cakes / mi abuela likes to make tortillas y empenadas"), Rane Arroyo's "My Tongue is Like a Map" ("Sometimes I dream in English and Spanish"), and Mimi Chapra's "Mi mama cubana" ("When mi mama cubana cooks arroz con pollo, / her smile is wider than a slice of watermelon"). Many other authors are featured, including Judith Ortiz Cofer and Francisco X. Alarcon.
This book is an excellent tribute to both Latino cultures and to mothers and grandmothers. Barragan's richly colored illustrations crackle with energy, and can also be very tender. Highly recommended to anyone with fond memories of a mother and/or grandmother, regardless of the reader's own cultural heritage.
