The Flat Earth comes of age...

The "Flat Earth" series as a whole is definitely my all-time desert island pick. I've never read anything as incredibly beautiful and magical as these books, and I read a LOT. This book has all of the lush eroticism, shimmering enchantment, and fey loveliness of the previous two books, told in the same intricate, lapidary prose, and adds the powerful themes of growth and change. _Delirium's Mistress_ is the story of Sovaz (at first), the offspring of that union between Azhrarn the Prince of Demons and the priestess Dunizel which was a major part of _Delusion's Master_. Throughout this book, there is a sense of the weight of the ages that have passed on the Flat Earth. Much of the action is the result of long-past intrigues of the various Lords of Darkness. Shades of the past appear to advise characters at key junctures. The book begins with the love affair between Chuz, Prince Madness, and Sovaz/Azhriaz/Atmeh, which is quickly interrupted by the revenge Azhrarn takes as a result ov Chuz's actions in _Delusion's Master_. The remainder of the book concerns the heroine's search for her true self- is she Sovaz, the child of Dunizel, the Moon's Soul and embodiment of good? Is she Azhriaz, the merciless, all-powerful daughter of wicked Azhrarn? Or is she something more? Azhriaz's journey of self-discovery also becomes a force for the transformation of other characters. By the book's end, Azhrarn has been forever changed by the love of Dunizel and her daughter. The cruel Zhirek of _Death's Master_ is reborn as a gentle healer and teacher through his association with Azhriaz. And a much-mellowed Chuz is eventually reunited with his beloved, who finally knows who she is and what she must do. This is a truly wonderful book... it continues all of the exotic magic and mystery of the first two books, and adds some real wisdom and humanity, too.

Tannith Lee takes us back to the flat earth to continue her tale with Azriaz, the prince of demons daughter. her fated love of chuz, the demon of wickedness and her inner light from her mother, dunizel, make this book incredible in both its narrative and descriptions. Tannith Lee is a master of words and takes you so deep into her world you may never be able to leave.

Overall this is a great book with high quality COLOR images and information on placental pathology. I make this comment because I found that the rival book by Blaustein does not have the same quality pictures (they are in black and white) and I don't recall much info in placental path. I would recommend this book to any pathologist wanting a good OB/GYN path reference book.

Crum has some different ideas about cervical neoplasia from most folks (at least in the places I've trained and practiced), but this text, purchased as an alternative to Kurman's Blaustein book (which I've never thought was a good read), has been a really pleasant suprise!!! The coverage of ovarian neoplasia and benign endometrium are very nice. Illustrations are wonderful and numerous---there is also a CD ROM, but I just haven't used it. A bargain for what you get!!!

My 2 year old LOVES this book!!! We "tone down" the fact that some Dinosaurs eat others, but she loves the realistic pictures, loves hearing the names, and learned to identify and pronounce all the Dinosaurs in this book the second day we had it... this book is fantastic! The ONLY drawback is that now our daughter wants more books just like this, and we've not been able to find anything else quite like it.

Great for kids

I was a big fan of the Eyewitness books when I was a kid, and so I decided to buy this for my Dino loving cousin. He loved it. Just like all the other Eyewitness books it was filled with big interesting pictures, and was understandable for all ages and reading levels. I recomend this to anyone searching for an informational dinosaur book to give to the little ones. Worth every cent.

Ideal Student Edition by a Leading Authority on Calhoun

Review Date: 2007-09-20
Dr. H. Lee Cheek and St. Augustine's Press should be commended for making Calhoun's "Disquisition" available in an inexpensive edition that is ideal for students. The "Disquisition" is one of the most important and original contributions to American political thought. It is essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand American history and government. Though there are other editions of Calhoun's treatise, the introduction by Cheek, who established himself as his generation's leading authority on the "Disquisition" with Calhoun and Popular Rule: The Political Theory of the Disquisition and Discourse, sets this one apart.

Recovering the Concurrent Republic

Review Date: 2007-12-18
~A Disquisition on Government~ deserves a renewed hearing among students of political science. Calhoun's Disquisition was a profoundly reflective parcel of American political thought that typifies what historians characterize as the South Atlantic Republicanism. Calhoun's concept of concurrent majorities and his understanding of the American federal system are deeply reflective. This masterful work was part of a reactionary imperative against the consolidating tendencies of the Jacksonian era. Britain had its Burke. America had its Calhoun.

As Lee Cheek notes, "In articulating the inherited understanding of properly constituted popular rule for his political situation, Calhoun may be called the last of the Founders." Undoubtedly, if we are to ever initiate a meaningful renaissance of federalism and implement needed constitutional reforms within the United States, such a move necessitates the revival of the statesmanship of John Calhoun. So, Dr. Cheek's books are a good place to start.

In the years ahead, as political science advances, and the judgment of history takes hold against the American slip into consolidation, Calhoun will likely receive a renewed hearing. H.L. Cheek, Jr. is to be commended for his scholarship on Calhoun's ideas. Invigorating the body politic entails the rediscovery and subsequent application of Calhoun's statesmanship. Apart from Calhoun's own books, Cheek's scholarship is definitive on the subject.

I highly recommend reading this book in tandem with _Calhoun and Popular Rule: The Political Theory of the Disquisition and Discourse_ by H.L. Cheek, Jr. as well. It is one of the most erudite and illuminating books on the mind of one John C. Calhoun. You can also find his online article, "Calhoun, Sectional Conflict, and Modern America," through the Journal of Libertarian Studies, which is affiliated with the Mises Institute.

A Great American Classic of Political Philosophy
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-25
John C. Calhoun's _A Disquisition on Government_ is a virtually unanswerable response to social compact theory. American political philosophy in the Early Republic vacillated between Lockean theories such as the one found in the Declaration of Independence and historical accounts such as in Richard Bland's 1766 "An Inquiry into the Rights of the British Colonies" and Thomas Jefferson's 1774 "A Summary View of the Rights of British America." What Calhoun does in this book is to demonstrate that the Lockean position is ultimately insupportable, because there never was a state of nature, a newborn is not "equal" to his parents at birth but subject to them, etc. For Calhoun, as for Bland and Jefferson (1774), history is the only legitimate guide to the nature of our rights and the proper limitations on the powers of government. Calhoun considers all of these issues in the clear, cogent prose for which he was famous in his day. Not for nothing is he known, along with John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison, as one of America's few great philosopher-statesmen.

Readers of this edition of Calhoun's classic work will have the benefit of a new introduction by noted Calhoun scholar H. Lee Cheek, Jr. Dr. Cheek's book on Calhoun's two great works of political philosophy and history has set the standard for a new generation, and he does a fine job here of contextualizing the _Disquisition_ and explaining its significance -- both in its own day and in ours. This is the best edition of the _Disquisition_ available.

Zoe feels helpless when her parents announce they must move. Everything Zoe has ever loved is left behind, friends, her town, the redwoods, her secret room. She vows, no matter what, she'll return. Thus begins the tale of a brave young girls as she faces the prospect of being homeless, a new friend who she can't trust with the truth, and a family she loves, but who don't seem to understand how she feels. As things whirl out of control, Zoe decides to do something drastic, something daring, something that will rock everyone's life and change things forever.

Carey is a master wordsmith. She has created an imperfect character that I fell in love with immediately. The ending gave me chills as the threads that had been woven so materfully throughout the story came together in a satisfying way.

If you haven't read one of Carey's other books, then you are missing a rare treat.

This is a lovely novel about a feisty eleven year old whose family loses their home and moves to Oregon from California, where they live in a van while Zoe goes to school, and tries very hard to keep her friends from finding out this fact.

The premise is touching, heart-breaking at times, but perhaps the best part of the novel is the lyricism of Carey's voice, her sensitivity to a 11 year old's hopes and fears, her use of language, her attention to tension and resolution.

Homeless Story is Rich In Writing and Emotion

Zoe Flynn has a secret. She and her family are homeless, living in the family van since her father lost his bookstore and his job. Zoe is successful at keeping her family's plight a secret from her new friend Aliya, police officer Bergstrom and everyone else in Scout River, Oregon, where her father finally finds work. But Zoe misses her big old house in California with its creaky floors, leaky toilet and her own closet hide-away. After a desperate attempt to go back and regain her home fails, Zoe finally discovers that the elusive "door" her grandmother advised her to find is not in her old house but right in the backyard of the trailer she and her family move into. By opening this new door, Zoe opens up her life once again to the joys of friendship, family and her own artistic spririt. Janet Lee Carey's story is well crafted and her writing lyrical. Zoe's character is alive with all the dreams, fears, and yearnings of a young girl struggling to understand and overcome such a dismal situation. This contemporary story of homelessness is ageless in its expression of the love of a place called home.

The author grabs the reader's attention at the very beginning of the book when describing Freeman's daily schedule (typically from 2:30 am - 8:30 pm), a schedule that would tire the typical person after only a few days.

Johnson reveals Freeman's interesting background as the son of a Confederate soldier whose interest in writing about history was conceived at a gathering of Confederate veterans at the Battle of the Crater in Petersburg, Virginia years after the Civil War ended. The author includes the excellent relationships Freeman enjoyed with his family (with the exception of his son), newspaper associates, academic peers, and other areas of his interesting life. These revelations personify the definition of a true Southern gentleman! I might add too - Freeman was also a vocal and determined opponent of racism.

I was particularly inspired by the author's description of Freeman's extremely disciplined (though not necessarily always rigid) life. While Freeman had a fulfilling and extremely busy life and was often away from his family, he did manage to spend time with them when possible.

An excellent and highly enjoyable read of the eminent biographer of Robert E. Lee and George Washington. Highly recommended!

David Johnson has done us all a great favor by finally writing a biography of the most amazing "Doc" Freeman. The son of a Confederate soldier, Douglas Southall Freeman's life is a study in self-discipline and perseverance. Freeman was a man who crammed 4 careers into one life - Pulitzer (One for the biography of General Lee and one post-humously for George Washington) winning author, newspaper editor, teacher and broadcaster. Ever since learning of Freeman many years ago, I'd wondered why no biography had ever been written of him. Freeman was a man that was faithful to his calling, to serving his fellow man and to serving his God. The book should be in every history lover's library. ~ Richard G. Williams, Jr., editor of "The Maxims of Robert E. Lee" to be released in November.

Superb stylist Tanith Lee offers a wry picaresque fable for the young and the young at heart. A children's book peppered with things to entertain the grownups who might be reading along. Sweet and goofy. The characters are delightful and hilarious and always heading in unexpected and wonderful directions. At times laugh out loud funny. It manages to be both a fairy tale quest and a parody of the genre... so that (unlike many books in this vein targeted at little readers) it never dissolves its own goo. My only complaint about the book is that I can't find it in print to give to the kids in my life.

It's always refreshing to read a fantasy that can laugh at itself-- as The Dragon Hoard is constantly doing. Tanith Lee's inventiveness never lags, strolling briskly from talking goats and owls to a witch's unpaid chariot fees to a pair of silly wolves. All traditional characters are in place...with outrageous twists! The prince isn't much for heroics and scarcely knows how to seek his fortune, the princess is cursed with a kindness spell, and everything in general is turned completely upside down. Wonderful book-- pity it's so hard to find.

I first read this book when I was twelve, and remember it impressed me so much that I was inspired to write my own fairytale. Ever since I have been attempting to find my own copy of this timeless story, and thanks to Amazon this has finally become possible. Now at 21 years of age I find this story just as delightful as I had remembered. Tanith Lee has such a clever way of wording her narrative, which at times reminds me of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. Her story, while much more light-hearted and a faster read than The Hobbit, is very imaginative and original, making it a fun read for both children and adults. With its down-to-earth heroes, unforgettable characters, and its many unexpected twists of fate, the Dragon Hoard never has a boring moment. It is my opinion, and also that of my teenage sister and cousins, that this book deserves to be called a classic and should be returned to print! Good luck finding this little treasure!

My child loves to draw, even though admittedly is not yet very good at it. This book has shown the way to better drawing skills in a step-by-step way. There is nothing "cartoon-ish" about the drawings, as they are realistic portayals, which is what my child is striving for. Not too difficult though, for a younger child either. My 8-year-old absolutely loves all the books in this series. They don't involve much reading at all. Each pictures shows many steps from beginning to end, not just a few.

ADF's current Archdruid, Skip Ellison, has done a great favor for those who wish to learn more about the Irish ogham alphabet. This book takes the known scholastic sources concerning the ogham, and lays the information out in a clear and orderly way.

The book begins by presenting the alphabet letter-by-letter, with correspondences for each, and with the commentary and meanings provided from actual Irish sources. It then presents the many different variants of the ogham found in the book of ballymote. Finally, it provides some starting-point ideas about using the ogham for divination and magic, and some useful appendices, including a ready-to-copy set of ogham disks.

Anyone who wants to get a solid understanding of the facts about this mysterious Celtic alphabet should start with this book.
