Sparks fly when an acclaimed French actress meets an English lord, who must chaperone her stay in England while she performs. Colette, a complex heroine, learns more about English aristocracy and passion than she ever dreamed and Lord Thackeray learns about the difference between passion and love. This story makes Victorian England come alive, making this a page-turner that I couldn't put down!

Rich in historical detail

Rich in historical detail, The Courtesan's Daughter immerses the reader in the ambiance of Victorian England. The cast of characters, major and minor, is richly drawn. The hero's complexity matches the heroine's complexity, which is not always the case in romance novels. The story explores a timeless human theme: the desire to be part of a loving family and the extraordinary longing to discover abiding love regardless of very real obstacles.

Magical! Loved it!

I could not put this book down! The Courtesan's Daughter is a riveting page-turner filled with secrets, forbidden love, fascinating historical detail and sharp, witty dialogue. The author deftly counterbalances acerbic wit with a heartwarming generosity of spirit for characters who find themselves the victims of a repressive Victorian society.

When dashing Lord Jonathan Thackery becomes the reluctant chaperone of Colette Chartier, a stunning nineteen-year-old French actress, they must overcome a tangled web of secrets and lies before they can find true love. I absolutely adored this book for its literary richness, deep psychological insight... and of course, for its smart, passionate (red hot!) characters. Great book! Beautifully written.

Dr. Lee offers thought provoking insights and recommendations on doing business in Asia, based upon years of personal experience. Interesting contrasts of Asian and Western cultures help to explain the different approaches to business. His advice on the important subjects of negotiation and conflict resolution provide valuable guidance on how to avoid common misunderstandings and achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. This book is great for those interested in doing business in China and is recommended reading by the nation's top business school.

Explaining China is a favorite avocation of many Chinese in the West. They usually state that Chinese and Western values are opposed, and that Chinese values are not only different but superior. This fairly typical book can be straightforward and informative, particularly when the author discusses the decision-making process in China and warns that `yes' and `no' probably don't mean what the average, unsubtle American understands them to mean. But stay skeptical of the author's generalizations about Chinese (Dragon) and Western (Cowboy) motivations. He stresses the supposed "collective" disposition of Chinese, but anyone with China experience will wonder just how "collective" the Chinese really are. In an often-used saying, the Chinese compare themselves to grains of sand - to emphasize their difficulty in getting together and cooperating. Sometimes the book describes fact, and sometimes fantasy that Chinese wish were fact. It can be as useful to know a people's fantasies as it is to know their facts so, properly read, we find this book to be a useful addition to the bibliography on doing business in China. (There are, by the way, some annoying proofreading errors, most egregiously the erroneous pinyin spelling of the Chinese word for face.)

A must read for anyone interested in doing business in China

Dr. Lee covers a lot of subject matter in Cowboys and Dragrons. This is not a travel or "how to" book. This is a hands on reference piece that aims at breaking down cultural myths between the U.S. and China that have historically promulgated misunderstanding between the two countries. Dr. Lee emphasizes the necessity of having a historical and cultural understanding of the United States and China before entering into or embarking on business dealings between the two countries. He poses philisophical questions to the reader in order to uncover fundamental truths about human relationships. Furthermore, he provides practical advice on how to make a U.S./China business deal work to the benefit of BOTH sides.

If you ever wondered why Chinese bow and avoid direct eye contact versus the American norm of firm handshakes and looking someone squarely in the eye or how to better understand the nuances of business language among both cultures, this book will explain it all.

Cowboys and Dragons will surely become a must read among business school students, entrepreneurs, executives, and individuals that plan or or are currently doing business in China. Keep this book handy.

This is actually one of Lee's best books, and it is supposed to be reprinted in hardcover by Necro Press very soon. It's a shame this one is so hard to find when "Messenger" and "Monstrosity" are still in print.

In this one Philip Straker (Lee's pen name for his first two novels) is a down and out cop (the best kind) who leaves the big city to go to a small town police department. He is placed undercover and ends up in a strip bar which features Creeker girls. Creekers, for those that don't know, are rednecks who are inbred to the point that they look like Thalidomide babies. These girls, with their missing and deformed limbs, work at a strip club that doubles for illegal operations that involve higher ups in the community. Straker gets wise, and he is warned to back off. He must now decide whether to back off or to alienate himself with the entire town.

Chock full of the trademark Lee sex and violence, this features names drawn from other Lee works, and references that true Lee fans will appreciate. Hopefully this will be reprinted soon, as the original printing is very scarce.

Creekers is some of Lee's best work

Edward Lee is one of my favorite Horror Writer's. I haven't read a book of his yet that I have not loved, and Creekers has to be one of his best stories to date.

Creekers are a family of outcasts that live in the woods outside the small town of Crick City. They are a mysterious clan that has been inbreeding for centuries. They are hideously deformed with blood red eyes.

Phil Straker a homicide cop has come back to the town of his childhood in hopes of solving a bunch of gruesome murders that have been taken place in Crick City. There are rumors flying around that the Creekers are the ones responsible, and he is determined to bring them to justice. He has no idea what he about to get himself into.

I could not put Creekers down. I was glued to it the moment I started. I devoured it in two nights, and hated to see it end. It is an original story full of Blood, Guts, and Sex. There are scenes that will have your stomach churning, and heart racing.

Creekers is a must read for any fan of Lee's work. I was happy to see that it is reprint. Now more people will get a chance to read one of the best stories Lee has ever written.

This is another awesome book put out by Tokyo Pop! The panels are open and clear so you don't have to go over the book trying to figure out the story, though the characters sometimes use words in another language and it's annoying going back and forth to the Dictionary in the back but that doesn't take away from the great work of Toshihiro Ono, Aya Yoshinaga and the original story writer Hiroyuki Morioka!

What I love about this book is that it's not girls in the kitchen cooking and Daddy praying. Both men and women in the book (sometimes) wear kippot. Oddly the rabbi seems to be wearing his tallis to dinner, but I'll trade that for the usual gender-biased books.

This is a delightful book! A must-buy for the Hanukkah season. The rhyme is clever and the vocabulary simple enough for small children. The book introduces kids to this special holiday and to the alphabet at the same time. There is a real need for a book like this that conveys the warmth of Hanukkah to pre-school children.

Great book for beginning bakers

Review Date: 2007-03-08
I must say this is my first review. This book is really a great book for someone who has never baked or has not been that good at it. The only reason I bought this book to begin with was because I was shopping at a store in Savannah, GA and the gentleman who helped me find a good knife for cooking happened to be the author. Well I must say after getting it home I decided to scan for a few good recipes. I didn't even get to any recipes that night because I was learning about the ingredients that go into baking. I now know why I was never any good at baking. Mr. Fowler's instructions are very detailed and he gives wonderful histories of ingredients. I loved this book so much that I went straight to Amazon and looked for more books that he has written and have bought a couple of them. All of them that I have gotten are equal in quality. I really never read cookbooks, I just used them for recipes but this one is worth reading. Just a note, he is wonderful person if you ever get to meet him and very knowledgeable on all things culinary.

From cornbread to sweet potato breads and cakes, Southern baking holds a wide reputation - and there's no better place to learn the basics than from Damon Lee Fowler's New Southern Baking, celebrating traditional baking techniques but updating dishes for modern times. New Southern Baking will appeal to all levels of cook with easy recipes and plenty of tips - and it'll even appeal to advanced cooks who want different twists to dishes, such as a Chocolate Chip Pecan Wedding Shortbread or Sweet Potato Griddlecakes. Recommended above other more general Southern cookbooks, with its focus on baking and the wonderful blend of tradition vs. innovation.

Southern cookbook writers are almost as prolific as its novelists. Just when we think there is nothing else to be said, another great book with new, untried recipes gets published; and we know we cannot live without it. Damon Lee Fowler has written just such a book.

Mr. Fowler in his introduction gives a brief history of Southern cooking, tracing its roots primarily to the African American and European tradition. He reminds us that there is no need to publish yet another lemon meringue pie recipe as there are dozens floating around. It also "pains" him that he cannot print again his fruitcake recipe (I for one feel no pain since I've never met a fruitcake, the accordion of desserts, I liked although I've neither cooked nor tasted his recipe). He also discusses fully ingredients and equipment in a chapter called "Southern Baking Essentials." There are chapters on quickbreads, stove-top baking, cookies, cakes, pies and pastries, and yeast baking. Finally there is an exhaustive biibliography and reading list.

I'm easy on cookbook writers. They must only print one outrageously good recipe in order for their book to be a success. Bubber's Key Lime Cake (pp. 184-185) makes the cut. This divine cake is a beauty to behold (all white layers and icing); is easy for the most part to assemble although sifting almost five cups of confectioners' sugar for the icing will not make your day; the key lime cream cheese buttercream icing, however, is as good as I have ever eaten; and finally the aroma of lime when you present your cake to your guests will make them smile. I guarantee it.

There are other recipes I want to try. The Appalachian Stack Cake (pp. 188-189) is close to one my grandmother baked when I was a child and I haven't had since then. The Brown Velvet Cake with Dark Fudge Frosting will probably let you live longer without the poisonous red food coloring we associate with red velvet cake. Mr. Fowler also includes several varieties of poundcakes and apparently has a love-hate relationship with them, noting that if you worry about them they are bound to fall.

There are of course many other recipes that will appeal to the individual baker. Mr. Fowler's directions are clear and easy to follow; to his everlasting credit he always tells the reader where to position the rack in the oven, something that many otherwise good cookbook authors fail to do.

Mr. Fowler writes an often pleasantly chatty introduction on the subject covered in each chapter and includes general information about baking those items. Examples: "The first thing required of biscuit making, as with all pastry, is a light touch." And filtered or bottled water should be used for your bread baking. Finally there are several fine color photographs included. You will find many recipes to try in this delicious book.

I have been using Fred Halsall's book in my computer engineering degree and it has been very useful. This is a dense, fat book that will provide lots of information. It covers the basics, from the essential theory about digital transmission, protocol basics and implementation methods, legacy and wireless LANs, HS LANs, transparent and source routing bridges, packet switching and frame relay networks/protocols, internetworking architectures, protocols and routing algorithms, multiservice broadband networks, TCP/IP and OSI application protocols, data encryption and network security, network management structures like SNMP and CMIP and other stuff. I can complain about some of the excessive use of acronyms that leave some areas of the book much harder to read. I'm talking about hundreds of acronyms here.

Also, Fred's writing is sometimes a bit too dry, sometimes forgetting to give the reader a general idea about the subject, instead of just jumping into all the details. This is something that is better done in other books, especially Andrew Tanenbaum's "Computer Networks". Tanenbaum also shares his sense of humour, which, in a dense volume about telecommunications, ends up refreshing the user. Also, Tanenbaum's dares to share his opinion sometimes, something Halsall seldom does, giving us only the facts and nothing more. But if it's the facts you want, he's good at it.

I found most of the book clear; the section about Huffman data compression for instance, was excellent. I remember having some trouble with the Viterbi EC algorithm, which isn't very well explained. The book also lacks information about some more modern technologies like GSM.

In general, this is a very competent title, and a great resource to the student or the computer professional. Be sure to check Andrew S. Tanenbaum's "Computer Networks", since you might prefer it to this title, or, the perfect choice, get both. (I have them both and some subjects are a lot better in one book, and others are a lot better in the other title).

The "Flat Earth" series as a whole is definitely my all-time desert island pick. I've never read anything as incredibly beautiful and magical as these books, and I read a LOT. This book has all of the lush eroticism, shimmering enchantment, and fey loveliness of the previous two books, told in the same intricate, lapidary prose, and adds the powerful themes of growth and change. _Delirium's Mistress_ is the story of Sovaz (at first), the offspring of that union between Azhrarn the Prince of Demons and the priestess Dunizel which was a major part of _Delusion's Master_. Throughout this book, there is a sense of the weight of the ages that have passed on the Flat Earth. Much of the action is the result of long-past intrigues of the various Lords of Darkness. Shades of the past appear to advise characters at key junctures. The book begins with the love affair between Chuz, Prince Madness, and Sovaz/Azhriaz/Atmeh, which is quickly interrupted by the revenge Azhrarn takes as a result ov Chuz's actions in _Delusion's Master_. The remainder of the book concerns the heroine's search for her true self- is she Sovaz, the child of Dunizel, the Moon's Soul and embodiment of good? Is she Azhriaz, the merciless, all-powerful daughter of wicked Azhrarn? Or is she something more? Azhriaz's journey of self-discovery also becomes a force for the transformation of other characters. By the book's end, Azhrarn has been forever changed by the love of Dunizel and her daughter. The cruel Zhirek of _Death's Master_ is reborn as a gentle healer and teacher through his association with Azhriaz. And a much-mellowed Chuz is eventually reunited with his beloved, who finally knows who she is and what she must do. This is a truly wonderful book... it continues all of the exotic magic and mystery of the first two books, and adds some real wisdom and humanity, too.

Crum has some different ideas about cervical neoplasia from most folks (at least in the places I've trained and practiced), but this text, purchased as an alternative to Kurman's Blaustein book (which I've never thought was a good read), has been a really pleasant suprise!!! The coverage of ovarian neoplasia and benign endometrium are very nice. Illustrations are wonderful and numerous---there is also a CD ROM, but I just haven't used it. A bargain for what you get!!!
