This is a book that was obviously written by people who live the classroom rather than study it. There were ideas that I could use right away with minimal preparation. Although it is targeted for middle schools, it can easily be adapted to any grade level. It really will get your students to be motivated writers.

Sage Counsel for All Coaches

Review Date: 2007-12-02
If you are a coach, of any kind, "selling" hours and wondering how you ever break out of the rat race (the only way to make more money is to work yet more hours), this book can change your life. For the better!

Since this book was written a couple of years ago, there are other books on creating multiple streams of income that provide more details on each of the streams. Janet Switzer's "Instant Income" and Robert Allen's "Multiple Streams of Internet Income" are two excellent books that come to mind. But, the strength of this book is the author's determination to help coaches discover a means of supporting their coaching mission. And author, Andrea Lee's work with Thomas Leonard, the father of personal coaching as we know it today, makes hers a voice to be listened to, by all coaches.

The logic of the strategy presented is irrefutable. Provide clients with multiple means to absorb your wisdom. And, by doing so, create scalable revenue opportunities that can supplement, if not overtake, chargeable hour revenue.

Side note: I enjoyed the unique writing style of short thoughtful blasts. Some may be put off by it (and one reviewer was), but it worked well for me.

I am especially glad I grabbed this book before a cross-country flight. I devoured the book on the 4+ hour ride and the punchy writing style unleashed within me a torrent of very worthwhile ideas. I landed with over 30 implementable actions written in the back of the book. I am confident these actions will advance my multiple endeavors. For that, I am most grateful to Andrea Lee. As she herself said late in the book "The act of reading fertilizes, moisturizes and exercises my brain, and my clients benefit immeasurably."

Great Ideas for a Bigger Game

Andrea has compiled a lot of great ideas for coaches and other entrepreneurs to capitalize on what they know, based on a myriad of new ways to generate income and create passive income. At the heart of her writing is the idea that we don't need to limit ourselves by earning income solely based on billable hours...and the fact that we can package and re-package our information, processes, and expertise in many different ways for many different audiences. I also appreciated the notion that we can take a "coaching approach" when teaching our content no matter what media we select.

Although I appreciate the benefit of Andrea's ideas and inspiration, I did not like the layout of the book. For example, I didn't like her over-use of one- and two-sentence paragraphs, subpar highly pixelated graphics, and the "thrown together" look and feel of the book. In contrast, the content was fairly well organized and the book was a quick read, which kept me engaged enough to read it from cover to cover.

The different approaches and products discussed in this book are a win-win situation for both clients and coaches. These approaches will benefit the diverse needs of coaching clients too.

I loved this book! It was just what I needed, just when I needed it.

This book was a great wake-up call for me at a time when I was about to re-structure my business. It is too easy to get so wrapped up in your business and all you see everyday are the 'trees'. After reading this book I said "Hey look, a forest".

I have known the concept of multiple streams and the value of group coaching and I have seen the models in action. However, this book resonated with me and I found myself taking notes and journaling new ideas for products and services I will create and implement.

A 300 + page book can seem daunting when you are busy, but the tone and the style the book is written in allows you to sail through the book with ease.

If you are a Coach, you owe it to yourself to read this book!!

He specifies what he does not like

It is difficult nowadays to get an objective, nuanced opinion on Islam, neither flattering nor biased against it. If I were to recommend a way to try and achieve that, I would suggest to read several good books on the matter, including this one among them: I like it because the author is extremely specific, i.e., he goes down to the detail and critizies what he does not like in muslim behaviour or thought. In that way, even if one does not agree with him on all (or part of )what he says, it is to be praised that he gives a fairly opportunity to answer back. Besides, it is very complete (but only as far as Switzerland is concerned) and reasonibly readable book (without being light).

Other books that I would recommend to read would be the following: A) ASSESSMENTS OF ISLAM: 1) The best, impartial, wise: "Islam. History, present, future" by Hans Küng (written in German, already available in Spanish, English translation coming in 2007); 2) Moderate Islam at its best: "The Great Theft : Wrestling Islam from the Extremists" by Khaled M. Abou El Fadl; and 3) Autobiography of a courageous woman: "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. She is a controversial thinker with a very interesting life. B) HISTORY: 4) General: "The Venture of Islam", by Marshall G. S. Hodgson (nowadays a classic included in any bibliography on Islam); 5) Turks: "The Turks in World History" by Carter Vaughn Findley; 6) Political theory: "God's Rule : Government and Islam" by Patricia Crone; and 7) Jihad: "Understanding Jihad" by David Cook (it also seems interesting although I have not read it yet: "Jihad in Islamic History: Doctrines and Practice" by Michael Bonner).

I offer many praises to Dr. Sami Aldeeb Abu-Salieh for writing this book and Dr. Sheldon Gosline for translating it into English. They have provided us with the first clear picture of Muslims in the West. Although much of the research is specific to Islam in Europe and Switzerland in particular, the conclusions are universal to all western nations. Dr. Aldeeb spent a lifetime studying this subject and his knowledge is totally evident. The translation into English of the original French and Arabic text was a massive task. It was undertaken with great care. If you are at all interested in the subject of Islam you must see this work!

Translated into English by Sheldon Lee Gosline, Muslims In The West: Redefining The Separation Of Church And State is accessibly written by Sami A. Aldeeb Abu-Sahlieh (Director of Islamic Law, Swiss Institute of Comparative Law, Lausanne) who drew upon his more than twenty years of personal and professional experience to examine the cultural, social, and political interactions of Muslims in Switzerland. Individual chapters address everything from conflicts of religion and the right to worship, to issues involving religious cemeteries and burial grounds. A very thoughtful and insightful work offering principles and wisdom that can be generalized to the Western world as a whole, Muslims In The West is an original and welcome contribution to Islamic Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

I love My Even Day! It's so much fun.

It's a strange, one could say, odd day for a young boy who awakes to find that everything in his life is even. There were eight beds, six closets and Mom had two heads and she made four flapjacks and there were two shoes and a field trip lunch of soup and ten watermelons. Oh, my!

The field trip to the zoo becomes even zanier with kangaroos for zoo guides, elephants with four trunks, lions and... so much more. And there are hidden objects for the reader to find on the pages. The story is in rhyme and is a fast-paced read that is tons of fun for children and adults. And the illustrations are quirky and eye-catching with lots of action to keep readers mesmerized.

And there's more. The ending is a clue for the next book in the series. You'll have to read it to find out what it is. And when the reader is finished, turn the page for more fun facts for Creative Minds. It's all about even numbers.

Armchair Interviews says: My Even Day is a wild, wacky, fun-filled story for children from four to eight.

This delightful book continues where "One Odd Day" left off in this sequel written and illustrated by the same award-winning team. Our boy wakes up to discover that life is back on an "even" keel. Mom has two heads; he sees eight beds; he's served four flapjacks; he's got two left shoes; all this before he even gets to school! The class is off to the zoo for a field trip and must pair up with a buddy for the day. In their tight lyrical format, authors Doris and Dani keep the reader laughing with the outrageous text, illustrated to thigh-slapping humorous perfection by the very comical Karen Lee. The zoo trip is a definite page-turner for the reader - you can hardly wait to see what happens next! The boy is anxious to get home and go to sleep. What will happen to him the next day? The end of the book leads the reader right into what will be a terrific sequel to My Even Day!

My Even Day and One Odd Day (as a combo) were one of Learning Magazine's 2008 Teachers' Choice Awards for Children's Books winners.

One of my favorite things in this book was the penguins in the illustrations. Ms. Lee had me anxious to see what the pair of penguins would do next! I was delighted by the outcome!

As with all Sylvan Dell books, the end of this book has an educational section "For Creative Minds" that includes: "Even Numbers Have A Match"; "Zero: An Even Number?"; "Square Numbers: Odd or Even?"; "Creative Sparks (Pairs)"; and "Defenders Of The Truth: Math Riddles".

If you read My Odd Day and enjoyed it, you will also delight in this companion book, My Even Day. Authors Doris Fisher and Dani Sneed have continued showing math concepts in a wonderful, zany story. It's zany in an irresistible imaginative way guaranteed to catch the attention of the reader who will be drawn into counting the six wings on a trio of lions or the Scramblesaurus with ten eyes! What is a Scramblesaurus? Read the book to discover it and its number of features. Like in the first book, the writing is in rhyme that flows easily, and the even numbers are in bold type for beginning readers.

Illustrator Karen Lee nicely integrates all of the numeric concepts in fanciful paintings with movement, rhythm, and humor! The activities at the back challenge children to count, multiply, and solve riddles. Children from Kindergarten to Second Grade will take to this book, not only for math, but also for beginning reading skills and enjoyment above all. Highly recommended.

This book is a true work of art in which humanity is reflected in each of its subjects, in every image and in every word. It reads like life: the stories of these women, both simple and complex, are a celebration of the soul; the poetry flows like a stream of consciousness wandering of the brain; the imagery captures the details of the people and places we often overlook and take for granted. Reading this book reminded me how important it is to pay attention to and appreciate everything in life, as seen through the feminine eye of the author.

Strength Training without Weights

If you have been exercising for a few years, you know that your own body weight can at times be enough to create resistance. This seems especially relevant when doing Pilates or when working with a trainer who can apply pressure as you are exercising. The idea of Human Resistance Training seems to have evolved out of a situation where you are working out with a personal trainer, however, with this book you can workout at home with a partner and see the same results.

While you don't need extra equipment, you do need a partner to complete the exercises in this book. This could be a great way to get your partner involved in working out with you or it could be fun to spend time with a friend while you both get fit. This book will also be appreciated by anyone studying to become a personal trainer. There are pictures for every exercise and detailed information explaining the movement and trainer/participant position. This is a very hands-on approach to exercise and both participants should read the book before starting any exercise program. While weights are not necessary, there are times when a bar is helpful. There is also a section on how to prevent injury.

The exercises in this book help to encourage cooperation and communication. No machines or additional weight equipment is required. Just a bar and a mat are needed. New Workout Human Resistance Training will help you understand the muscles you are exercising and the exercises are fun to do with a workout partner.

Amazing!! A Revolutionary Concept In Fitness Training!!!

Review Date: 2004-04-28
This book, with it's underlying philosophy, the sheer effectiveness of the methods which are graphically illustrated, simply yet thoroughly explained, and desribed in such minute detail will revolutionise the fitness industry in a very, very short time! Never has a book of this caliber been published in the field of strength and personal fitness traing!

The book contains no hype, no disinformation, no movie strars or celebrites attempting to use their name and face recognition in order to mmove this book to the top of the best-seller-lists. Never the less, the top-seler-list is exactly where this book should be.

The authors demonstrate a thorough, exhaustive, and complete knowledge of the workings of the humn body. They are able to instantly understand exactly where each person is in their present physical condtion and then proceed to design exercise programs which are maximized in a way that will bring people to their personall fitness goals in the shortest, most efficient manner possible.

The real beauty of this book and the exercise regimens they entail are the complete and utter doing-away with the standard, time-consuming, and virtually no-results attaining standard fitness programs. This is no run-of-the-mill exercise book!

Whether your goals are to lose unwanted body fat, increse muscle mass, become a healthier and more lively human being, or simply to look better in your swimming suit this summer, this book is for you - like no other exercise book has ever been!

And the real beauty of this system is that no exercise equipment is needed whatsoever! All you need is a willing partner who also wants to get into shape or, at the very least, is willing to devote several hours per week in order to help you attain your goals. The size and/or muscular differences between yourself and yout workout partner is never a factor in the satisfatcion you will receive from each workout. Because of the constant, moment-by-momet ability of your workout partner to vary the resistance with each and every repetition that you perform, each mucle group can be easily worked to a point of complete muscular failure, if that is what you wish. And the sytem is easily geared toward creating exactly the kind of body and fitness goals any person wishes to aspire to. For the first time in history, this is now not only possible, but easily within reach - for everyone, regardless of your present physical condition.

Speaking as a personal trainer with seven years experience and the former owner of a physical fitness company, I can say without hesitation that this book offers a completely revolutionary breakthrough in the application of exercise science. Now, for the first time, spouses can train each other, friends can train each other, and all in the privacy of their own homes and with out the expenditure of large sums of money for vastly over-priced peices of exercise equipment that never deliver on their soaring promises. In this way, Human resistance training serves as an excellent tool for bringing families and friends closer together as you help each other grow more strong and fit, more energetice, with higher levels of self esteem, more streamlined, and ready to tackle the challenges of every day life.

For the personal trainers out there - there is not a better book on the market that will teach you the mechanics of how the human body functions. Human Resistance Training will teach you exactly how each muscle is effected by every single exercise, as well as the entire body. It will enable you to work with your clients in a much more focused, more involved way. You will be an integral part of each and every exercise, feeling your clients effort and pain, and concentration within yourself - and all in a way that training with free weights or machines can never hope to emulate.

I would hope that every personal trainer reads this book and learns from it. It has changed my training style and taught me how to get spectacular results from my clients with half the normal effort. I've recently had several other trainers ask me, "Just what is it you're doing to get such quick results from youir clients?" I advise them to read this book and to soak up every piece of information from it that they can. All the secrets to becoming a phenomenal, legendary trainer are right there in the book "Human Resistance Traing" - just waiting to be comprehended and then put to work.

Mr. John Laurie, et. al.
Thank you for this wonderful guide to personal training. It has changed my personal training practice forever and has had an undescribly happy influene the lives of my clients.

Next: A Poetic Odyssey, by Lee Frank is an imaginative picaresque romp through a deliciously tongue-in-cheek dreamscape. The Next Bible, an ancient manuscript that is the prized possession(and secret weapon) of the royal Next family, has been misappropriated by the conniving Getavius Medalion and his loyalists. The book, which details many secrets of our universe and its parallels, becomes the target of a wild tug-of-war between the two clans. Those who possess it-and can decode its arcane language-can harness the power of different vibrational frequencies for the evolution of technology and consciousness. Or perhaps for darker purposes...... At once witty and thought-provoking, Next will have you trying to decode those vibrational frequencies yourself. God may be in the details-or in the molecular structure.....

I bought this to use with Tapestry of Grace curriculum, and used it with a 14 yr old fresh out of public school. It was way beyond her vocabulary level and reading skill set. This is a book I have seen used in college classes, and it figures, because much of the poems and plays are written in old or medieval English. We ended up scrapping this book most of the time and reading the same works in modern English online.
Having said that, for a child who is used to a classical education, this collection of works would be a pleasure to read.

As I read the condensed version of this book in Reader's Digest, I was positive that the ending would reveal that Lee was currently happy and healthy and living with his loving family. Lee's mother relayed THAT much hope through her words, that I believed he was still with her on this earth. Apparantly, her pride and love for him transcends the boundaries of life.

Amazing story of a boy which provides proof that there is not an obstacle we cannot overcome. Lee's courage was endless.

Be sure to have a box of kleenex with you!

My grandmother wrote this book about my uncle! He was the best guy ever! Male, female, kid, adult, anybody will be touched by this fabulous book. It showed me what I should value in life and also showed me what a great guy Lee grew up to be. Lee had a disease that you will learn about and relize what he went through throughout his lifetime. You will be truly glad you read this book and will be touched in so many different ways. It could change the way you look at life! This book also appeared in the Dec. 1998 Reader's Digest. Please take the time to read this heart warming book. You will be so glad you did!

I am learning Java and have briefly used two other books that just confused me by trying to explain Object Oriented Programming by showing examples of complex Java code. If you aren't familiar with OOP and want to learn Java, this is a great place to start.

This a very nice book to get your fundamentals and concepts of java. Do not expect to learn java syntax. A little bit of programming experience would be very helpful before buying this

One objective -- OOP ideas and techniques

If you are new to programming, don't buy this book. If, on the other hand, you understand basic programming techniques and ideas and want to enter the utopia of OOP in java, this is a great book! It clearly describes all of the OOP topics - inheritance, polymorphism, etc. It also includes nice discussions on networking with java and graphical interfaces. I also like that this book is to the point. While it is 300 pages, the writers don't go on and on about an idea. Rather, the authors' writing is very dense and requires interpretation and creativity on the reader's part. It will take several months for all of this information to really sink in.

Excellent Coverage of Java and OO Concepts for the Novice

The beauty of this book is not in it's coverage of OO programming or of Java, but how it melds the two together to bring a greater understanding of both to the novice reader. Each new topic covered builds on previous chapters, and the reader never feels like the authors assume any knowledge not covered in the text.

Code snippets are surprisingly concise, and free of annoying syntax errors that could confound the novice developer.

The book begins with several chapters introducing basic OO concepts and gradually introduces and increasing amount of Java code and delving into the Java API.

The middle portion of the book covering the core concepts of OO development (Inheritance, Encapsulation, and Polymorphism.) It then goes on to cover slightly more advanced concepts such as Exception Handing, socket programming with TCP/IP, JDBC, multi-threading.

The book does provide good coverage AWT model and GUI construction. Sadly, the it does not include coverage of Swing.

To date, it's the best ground up coverage I have found for both Java and OO basics. Experienced C/C++ developers may find it a bit slow paced.

For those interested in following up with a more advanced guide for Java 2 certification, I'd consider A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification by Khalid Azim Mughal, Rolf Rasmussen. It's a great certification prep and also a good core language reference.
