This book made me cry.

This book is so amazing. I didn't remember what it was about when I was going to read it to my daughter before bed time. Then I started reading it and when I got to the spot were her Aunt is telling her the story I lost it and starting crying. My daughter is bi-racial and it is hard for me to find books that help her understand how special she is and this book does it. I asked my mom to read it to her and she started crying also. This is a great book and I recomend it to anyone who wants to read a good story.

An excellent storey for ALL in this race conscious country.

Ms. Monk tells a storey (that is beautifully illustrated) about a question that many children ask their parents, relatives, friends and or teachers. What is mixed? She answers it in a positive way fit for 4 to 8 year old readers. The storey might be sweet, sentimental and syrupy to adults; but so what. Adults need to be reminded of the way things SHOULD be. There is no harm in letting a child know (adults most of all)that there is HOPE. FAITH IS THE SUBSTANCE OF THINGS HOPED FOR AND THE EVIDENCE OF THINGS NOT SEEN [Hebrews 11:1].

EVERY CHILD SHOULD HAVE THIS BOOK!

Every single child should have this book-- it teaches about different cultures and race in a positive way. The different language and sayings teaches us that we are all different, yet the same. Whether you have a multi-racial child, or just child, why not buy this book and enjoy something different. while possibly celebrating the differnces we have in culture, language, color, etc.

One reviewer called the language overly dramatic. I think this just shows how different we are with different backgrounds . Although I have never heard anyone actually speak like this, it doesn't mean someone is less intelligent.

Racism is so sublte and rampant in our society...what better way to start an opening than with a story read to a child??

Uplifting message using words fit for Martin Luther King

As the parent of a multirtacial child, this is one of my favorite books about multiracial families. It provides a good children's story as well as a positive multicultural message. I am bored by books that just say the equivalent of "You are special!" "I love you!" with no story behind them. Other reviewers have criticized the book for the larger-than-life language that is used at the end, but I think the words provide more inspiration than everyday words, the same way Martin Luther King and other great speechgivers do.
One minor caveat about the book: several of the characters speak in a more colloquial manner ("Baby, don't pay her no never mind," "She doesn't favor a soul in your family," "mama," "folks.") Since no one in my or my husband's family speaks this way, sometimes it feels stilted rolling off my tongue.
The author of the book is a professional actress in Minneapolis, where I used to live, and this was her first children's book, which may explain the dramatic language. Her second book about the character Hope is called "Family" but isn't nearly as good.

This is a very well written book about the iconic Rockefellers and their family estate. It's interesting how the house seems to act as a metaphor for each of the family member's, their interests, their desires. Kykuit is an amazing set peice and the mixture of Jr.'s Bosworth and Ogden Codman classical estate, Sr's wanting the house to be tasteful and not too grand, and Nelson's avande garde, modern tastes. The estate and it's location are breathtaking and the Codman interiors are exquisite. This is a very well researched and fascinating study of the Rockefellers and their Kykuit. I do recommend getting the Rockefeller Family Home: Kykuit, it's very good.

Excellent Insights into and the history of the family and house

Lee and Robert Dalzell have put together a very fascinating look at both the history of the home that generations the Rockefeller family occupied, how they built it, wrestled over it, disagreed about it and loved it which reflected the complicated relationships of the dynasty. Not unlike many parent and sibling relationships, there were arguments about what their parents' intentions were, Senior's and Junior's, Abby's, etc. and how they lived their lives based on interpretations of their parental affinities. The home (house?) becomes the symbol of the old world of privilege as well as a modern world of the current generation. The house and now the entire estate essentially was cobbled together and pulled apart as each new generation left its own footprints.
I particularly enjoyed trying to separate Lee's from Robert's "story" as well as the intertwining story of the house and the family.

This is much more than a book on the building of a house. It is about three generations of a family, their individual personalities, their character and development over time, all centered around the construction of a house that became a national monument. It is about their time and place in history. It is well written, a delight to read and leaves the reader yearning to know about the succeeding generation.

I read this book from an architect's viewpoint, and it squares with my experience that there is something about homebuilding that is intensely personal. Much has been written about visionary Designers. In fact, it is the clients who hire and steer those designers who are writing their world views large. I visited Kykuit once and thought the design was quirky for a pile from the mansion age...quirky but with vim & vigor, bold but not bombastic. Now I know how it got to be that way.

I can't imagine someone NOT being willing to part with six dollars to help themselves master a fear as debilitating as the fear of rejection. Lee is a successful business man who has confronted his own fears and coached many others to do the same. He walks his talk, and his tape is down to earth, practical, and very helpful. When I was researching for my book, "Starting from No, Ten Strategies to Overcome Your Fear of Rejection and Succeed in Business" I found very few resources on the topic that were right on the money. This is one of them - invest in yourself by buying this tape.

A superb, must have tool for any network marketer!

I had the good fortune to get my hands on this tape. After listening, I immediately gave it to everyone in my downline. This is an incredibly motivational and inspirational tape that empowers it's listeners to persevere thru inevitable rejections, in the course of building their businesses. I make sure that every new representative in my organization is armed with this tape. While it is a MUST have tool for network marketers, the tape has broad appeal and is filled with interesting true stories that will inspire anyone to keep working toward their personal goals.

Have you been rejected? Do you will feel frustrated when loved one's don't understand your vision? Do you understand the power of turning negatives into positive? If you answered yes, then you need to listen to this tape, not once, but over and over again.

You mean it wasn't me. I wasn't the only one on the block getting no for an answer. You mean getting no is actually being successful. You mean to say all these great people actually weren't born famous or successful. They had to be rejected first. Boy, I wish I had bought this tape in High School. I would have asked out the prettiest girl in the class. Why didn't they teach me these lessons of life?

But it's never to late to learn and the vaccination tape will exhilerate your day. It makes for an excellent gift. No matter what profession you are pursuing, if you desire to be better, if you desire to help other's better themselves, this tape is a must in the basic curriculum of life.

Buy one today for yourself and a fellow traveler and see how the world opens before you.

Being the author of several books on the martial arts and fighting, I am always looking for books of exceptional quality to add to my library. If I have a book in my library, it's definitely worth owning. One such book is Joo Bang Lee's, "The Ancient Martial Art of Hwarang Do; Volume One." This volume along with its two companion volumes are the first books that I am aware of that were written on this Korean martial art.

This volume, like the other two in the series, starts out with an outstanding section that gives you a detailed look at the history of Hwarang Do and its progression over the centuries from ancient times to the present day. You are then presented with the theory and internal dynamics which make up this very impressive art. The basic principles of training sections were also very good and offered excellent advice that should be implemented during training. The following is a brief overview of each chapter in the book and what it contains.

1. Way of Controlling the Mind and Body:

a. This section includes a very detailed description on training methods you can use in order to learn how to breathe properly and to harness that breath into the body's epi-center or Dan Jun in order to develop your ki or internal energy. This is also known as chi in Chinese.

b. There is also a section included here that details various techniques and training methods you can use to enhance your mental concentration and development of your ki to enhance your physical and mental well being.

2. Basic Stances:

a. This section goes over the basic principles behind each stance or posture that is demonstrated. You are then shown 14 different stances that are used in this art form.

3. Falling Techniques:

a. In this section you are given the six basic principles that should be used during the execution of any type of roll or fall. You are then shown 3 falls, 2 rolls, and 3 flips that are used in this art form.

4. Fists:

a. This section is rather brief to my liking, and focuses mainly on the various hand positions and types of strikes that are used in this art form. They range from classical punches to various open handed striking techniques including elbow strikes. There is a brief description provided on how to form your hand for each technique and also the preferred vital points that you should target with each particular strike.

5. Kicking Techniques:

a. This section although brief, is really well done. It starts off by explaining to you the basic principles involved in kicking correctly and how to breath correctly when kicking. It also gives a brief explanation into the different types of kicks. Very sound and solid information.

b. This is followed by a fairly good description of over 20 different kicks and their possible applications as well as the vital points that you would want to try and target when kicking. A rather brief example is then given of using multiple kicks on one or more opponents at one time.

c. This section finishes off with another brief section on specialty kicks, which focus on four different jumping and flying kicks.

6. Defensive Techniques:

a. This final section goes over the hard and soft blocks and parries that are incorporated in this art form. Demonstrations are given against an attack by both the hands and feet.

One of the things that I particularly liked about this book, and the others in the series, is the fact that there are no "sport" techniques in these books. All of the techniques shown are meant to be used in actual combat and self-defense situations. When you look at the art of Hwarang Do, you could make the comparison that this art form includes not only the strikes and kicks of Tae Kwon Do, but also the throwing and grappling techniques of Judo and the joint techniques of Aikido. Hwarang Do is truly a well-rounded and complete martial art.

This and its two companion volumes were some of the first books that I ever purchased years ago when I was in high school and starting to learn about the martial arts. These books give a very good overview on the art of Hwarang Do and are very informative. If you are interested in this art form, or any of the Korean arts, I would definitely put these books on your too buy list.

Originally published in 1978 by Ohara and since reprinted privately by JL Publications (and thus somewhat harder to obtain), this is the first in a three volume series by Master Teacher Joo-Bang Lee. This first volume of three covers history, Theory, Stances, Falling, Striking/punching, Kicking, and blocking. Included is a complete catalog of techniques from basic to advanced. The sequences of photographs are particularely good, with four to nine clear photos per technique. Volume Two covers joint locks, throws, sweeps and counters, defense from disadvataged positions (sitting, etc). Volume Three covers throwing, defense against weapons, striking vital points, a few cane and baton techniques, choking, opponent control, and defense against more than one opponent.

Although there is some debate as to the historicity of Hwarang-Do as an "ancient" martial art separate from Hapkido and Taekwondo --Lee claims Hwarang Do has a completely separate native Korean origin despite its remarkable similarity to other forms of Korean martial art such as Hapkido and Kuk Sool-- this debate does nothing to detract from the technical expertise evident in the presentation of this book and the two which follow it. Author Lee Joo-Bang was at one time a direct (and senior) student of Hapkido founder Choi Yong-sul, and part of an original core group of dedicated martial arts men in Korea who traded techniques with one another in a progressive and friendly manner. Eventually due to competition these bonds of brotherhood dissolved, and today there is a lot of mystery and quarreling over what happened in those early days to cause so much dissention. A special attraction of this series of books is that most of the techniques are demonstrated by Master Joo-Bang Lee himself, and not younger students, the rare exception being a series of spectacular flying/jumping kicks shown by his eldest son, Henry Lee.

Among the few faults I can find with this series of books is the format of the book itself (not the actual layout). I believe Lee's work would benefit greatly by being reintroduced in a larger format, and certainly a reworking of the section on history could include a number of the photos from his collection and personal recollections of the "early years" which impacted so much on Korea's modern martial arts. Hwarang-Do is certainly worthy of a nice large, hardcover volume built to last. Then again, these paperback editions offer affordability and easy access to the general public. For that reason and for the quality and scope of technique presented, Lee's three volume collection is absolutely worthwhile including in any martial arts collection.

This book was excellent, dojang nim joobang lee left out nothing that the beginning student wants to know. It was written in such a way that I felt like I am actually there with dojang nim joobang lee training. It has been a dream of mine to train in hwarang do since I was 8, and now at 23 I'm getting my chance.Of course no book should ideally substitute a actual human being in front of you instructing, but this is all I have because I live in cleveland, oh and there is not a single hwarang do school here. Lee joobang dojang nim, I give you a full salute and thank you for the knowledge you have shared with me and all the future hwarang warriors with this book.

This is a sweet rendition from a favorite song of mine. The song is something I wanted to tell all my children...it just fit as something a parent would like to pass on to those they love the most. The book does have a little bit of conflict as to what age it should be given to. But, of course, the song is geared to an older person...teen and up, so having the book for a younger age group made it a little difficult to really address either age group perfectly. But, this Christmas, I bought the older age group version for all the older females on my list and was happy to find this younger child's version for some of the younger ones. Both books has the CD single "I Hope You Dance". I would recommend it for kids maybe 8 to 12.

What I love about this version of an unforgettable song is that someone had enough sence to realize that there should be a version out in board book form. And what a good idea they had because now is the time that our girls need to hear this song and it's wonderful message while they young and then for the rest of their lives.

While this book does not go through the whole song, but hits the highlights. When you open up this book on the inside cover you'll see the cd single and on the other side there is a place to put a photo of your little girl and a place to write who the book is presented to, who the book is from and the date which I really think adds a beautiful touch.

Now, if you are looking for a simular book for an older child or for a boy there is a book called Wishes for You by Tobi Tobias & is illustrated by Henri Sorensen the ISBN # is 00644437302 and Amazon sells it. It's perfect for when your child is older!

I've been a big fan of Dan Lee's work for quite some time now. His characters in the Pixar films have brought many a smile to my face. This is a fun little book...you get see regular everyday people through his eyes. There is a lot of personality in these pages, and they are all so very simple. I am an artist myself, and "cafe" sketches are not as easy as Mr. Lee makes them look. But he had a gift, and I am gald I was able to enjoy that gift. It's such a shame he had to leave us so soon...the world would benefeit from more people like him. Thank you Dan, and thank you to all who contributed in putting this little gem together. Though the Pixar films and "art of" books will keep his memory alive for generations to come, this book just makes it feel a little more personal.

An inspiring peek through an accomplished artist's eyes.

He has gone a step further still and organized all hieratic signs into a logical reference work, that is easy to use, logical and can be expanded upon. This will prove to be a valuable reference tool for Egyptologists, for many years to come.

Review Date: 1998-11-03
The Jesus Principle combines a biblical theology and an ecclesiology that is helpful in defining and establishing the method of operation for the church. Written by Arlington, Texas pastor, Charles Wade, the work refuses to advocate a singular method of being and doing church. Wade weaves a defining tale of the church with interesting self-disclosure and historical quotations that reinforce and illuminate the principles. This book is not touting a singular, myopic, denominational position - it is much more. Nor is it a handbook on how to be a Baptist. Wade concentrates more on the broader spectrum of "the church" as the gathered and dispersed people of God. In reading this book one is reminded of Thomas Oden's excellent theology of the church in Pastoral Theology. Oden has written relevantly to "the church" from a Methodist home base, even as Wade has done so from a Baptist perspective. Any Christian open enough to open this book can learn and grow in their practice of faith. Perhaps the two most helpful expositions in The Jesus Principle are Wade's outlines of "What is the Church?" and "Functions of the Church". He answers the nature of the church question with several descriptive images, including: People of God, Temple of God, Army of God, Bride of Christ, Ark of God and Body of Christ. His basics in the function of the church are foundational elements in any holistic congregation: worship, evangelize, disciple, minister and create fellowship. Ancient rhetorician Qunitillian said the most basic criteria for judging a speech is a good person speaking well. Although The Jesus Principle is not a spoken word, it is clear from the reading, this is a good person writing well. The Jesus Principle is a "must read." Dan Williams, Pastor of Southland Baptist Church, San Angelo, Texas. From Texas Baptist Committed Newsletter, May, 1998.

In The Jesus Principle, Charles Wade has written a thorough account of how the church can ever more perfectly be made to reflect the character of Christ. I can say from personal experience as a former staff minister of his church that Charles Wade practices what he preaches. His life and his church make you want to cozy up close to learn. This book brings him and the church he serves closer to us all. More important, it brings us closer to the Christ who is the sole authority for all churches. It eloquently portrays the of role of the church in society.

The Jesus Principle helps, pastors, staff ministers, and church lay leaders get beyond rhetoric to what is real. It simply, yet eloquently, addresses the question of what the church is and what the church should be doing to fulfill the great commission and the great commandment of our Lord. Among the many books on church growth in circulation, this one is not merely theoretical, but comes from a practitioner who has tested and lived out its proposals. Many of us can easily relate to this book as we have all been through it one way or another. Funny at times and nostalgic it is a very good job by an author who should feel proud of her heritage and accomplishment. The reader should thank her for sharing these times and insights with her. Mothers and grandmaothers take note of this one. It will make a beautiful gift for any teenager. Thank you, Mary Potts Fluharty

"Jimmie Lee" reminds me of many things in my early years living on a central West Virginia farm. I also did chores morning and evening, carring water to the fields for workers, and later worked with them. The Author captured the spirit of the time during and after the depression. I can relate to some of the trouble in which Jimmie Lee and friends got involved. I recommend the book to those with a like background and to those who want to to get an idea of that period of time and the hardships the people endured.

One of the BEST books I ever read!!!

Simply Outstanding! This book is a great way to escape from the high-tech world of today and drift back to a time when things were more simple. I sure hope there is a sequel!

I recently bought a copy of this book became an instant fan of the author. Mr. Lee's descriptions, characters and settings are top-notch. This story is written with insight and humor. I recently moved from Washington DC. and am amazed at Mr. Lee's on-point ability to describe the DC-scene is allowing the reader to actually "see" the story unfolding. (The chapter that takes place at the Kennedy center - outstanding!)
This is a book about loving and being loved. It is life at its best and at its worst. Mr. Lee was able to capture not only the heart and soul of his characters, but allowed the reader through his phenomenal writing skills to get to know, love or hate his characters as if they were real. They are everyday people that any reader can relate to. I mean, who doesn't have at least one CHER in their lives?
This is a great read for anyone whose loved, laughed, or just enjoys curling up with a good book. BUT, be prepared. I promise you...you won't be able to put it down.

I have had the chance to meet the author and was given a autographed copy of his book to my Partner and myself and after reading this wonderful novel I was amazed at how this story hit home for me on so many personal levels. I think that we as professional gay men can identify with the main character Mark and his search for love, truth of self, freedom from pain and misery, and most of all emotional healing. We've all have been hurt in some point and we've all dated a "SATAN" in our life...lol. And, we have encountered a "Jared" as well. This story is touching in how we cultivate relationships with our family and sometimes the lack there of. Also the revalation of what was thought to be a strong friendship between Mark and Todd is also a crutial part of Mark's Standing up for himself. This book is a "MUST READ" for those who like to read a good story about gay life and relationships. I would compare J'son as the next E.Lynn Harris in the way he weaves his story and his character's to the point that you dont want to put the book down. You'll laugh out loud, and cry a silent tear; but this story will make you appreciate discovering love, falling in love, and last but not least deserving to be loved.

First time Author J'son M. Lee brings us a novel that reads like an autobiography. The raw emotions in this story seem too real not to be experience first hand. This was a great story to say the least that all can relate to on some level.

Meet Mark a handsome openly gay black male. He has a great job, a nice condo and great friends. So what is lacking you ask? That special man to share his life with. Mark is the son of preacher (His Father) and a English teacher (His mother). Mark has struggled with his sexuality and it didn't help matters that his parents were against homosexuality. As a teenager, he had his first encounter with a man that left him even more confused. When he leaves to go off to collage he finds there are more men like him struggling with their sexuality and finds comfort that he is not alone. In his second year of college he comes to term with his sexuality and comes "out the closet," He tells his gramma whom is his biggest supporter and her words stay with him forever. Gramma responds, "tell me something I don't already know I just want you to be happy." He next tells his parents whom completely disown him and he agonizes over their reacting for years to come.

Fast forward from the history lesson that has shaped Mark to be the man he is. After a nasty break up with Tony, Mark has met someone after taking himself of the market for year and half and is ready to move on with his life. Enter Jared a sexy man who has his eye on Mark. Jared has it going on in every sense of the word and turn the heads of ladies alike but is only interested in Mark. Just when things seem like they going in the right direction enter back into the picture Tony. This is where the story gets very interesting, as we, all know how the story goes as soon as we move on it's like the ex has radar and knows that someone else is interested.

You have to read the book to see the crazy antics that goes on with a cast of supporting characters that will have you cracking up especially Cher. Author J'son does a great job with the twist and turns in this book, and ties all the character together that is almost unbelievable but make perfect sense. J'son Lee is an author to be on the look out for. This is a great story and I look forward to reading more from him in the near future.
