Great book, very funny and whitty. It feels like you know "Number Three" halfway through the book and, despite his politically incorrect views and simplicity (or maybe because of it), he endears himself to the reader in double quick time!

I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys the sport of flyfishing and the characters that go with it - Robert Lee penned a little gem!

If after reading this book, you don't find yourself playing mental gymnastics with the rye-humored-memories imprinted on your brain - YOU'RE DEAD!

This is one of the funniest and more intriguing books I've ever read. You can't help wanting to deck a number of characters in this book - but just as surely, you'd deck anyone who would try! It's that kind of dichotemy that makes for one memorable book!

I've developed an entire list of "Elliott Notions" and "Donnyisms". Nearly every day since reading this book (which BTW I've done 4 times in as many months!).. I find myself laughing - many times fully out-loud - at situations which in my daily life mirror conditions from this book: not even related to fishing, guiding or the West. They are just the human condition - full, raw and life-on-the-limb.

Read the book. Experience the uncanny humor Robert Lee has brought to life in this whimsical tale. And answer this: "How many times did you say you'd like to 'see the movie'?"

Enjoy ...

Finished this book in one night. Actually got it for my husband, but got hooked after the first 2 pages of "browsing". "Number Three" is a funny, yet realistic representation of some of our most interesting characters here in Montana. I laughed out loud while digesting Number Three's philosophies on fishing, women, hobbies and life here in God's "last best place". I also am hoping for a sequel to follow Number Three's continued growing pains. Thank you Mr. Lee!!

I loved every minute of this book. I read it while I was fly fishing in Montana for rainbow. It was the perfect book to settle into every night before getting up early to fish again the next day. The characters are wonderful. I felt like I knew them personally. The author has a great sense of humor. Even though this book was very funny, it has a moral to the story. I hope Lee writes another one.

This novel at times places you in a beautiful Montana river delicately presenting your fly, then again in the dimly lit Muddler tavern with a cold Pabst Blue Ribbon in hand. All with the hilarity of the "Three Stooges". The Characters are all real people, with a truly believable story line. My only disappointment was finding the final page. The ending is wide open for a sequel and I urge Mr. Lee to do so. Perhaps even a series.

If you want to know "how a haiku means" in English (as the poet John Ciardi might have said), buy this book.

Haiku, A Poet's Guide is a concise introduction to the art, craft, and aesthetics of haiku in English. The example haiku alone, selected by Gurga from poems that were suggested by many poets, are worth the price of the book. Gurga's illuminating comments on individual poems and on haiku in general are even more valuable.

An excellent book for the advanced writer of haiku as well as the beginner. You will find yourself referring to it over and over and re-reading it for the sheer pleasure of it. The only error is in the title - I have recommended this wonderful book to many non-poet friends and discovered to my delight that they enjoyed it as much as I. Truly, a treat!

An Excellent and Enriching Book!

This is a very informative book about haiku -- what it is and what it is not.

The author's writing is unambiguous and insightful.

He places examples of failed haiku beside successful ones to illustrate the difficulties and subtleties of technique.

***

I was very pleased to find a point addressed that I had always wondered about concerning whether it is better to use the present-tense or participle form for verbs in haiku -- or whether it matters at all.

A haiku almost always will present a moment in the present. That means that the verbs used are likely to be in the form of either the simple present-tense (e.g. runs, paints, fishes, etc.) or participle (e.g. running, painting, fishing, etc).

Well, apparently there is no set rule about which to use, but here is an example of what the use of the participle will allow:

One of my own haiku used as an example:

a garden pond
drawing the moon out
from behind a cloud

The use of drawing allows that it can be read as any of these: "a garden pond [is] drawing" or "...[was] drawing," or even "...[will be] drawing."
Using the participial form provides the haiku with a versatility or flexibility with regard to the dimension of time.

Here's what it would be using the simple present tense form:

a garden pond
draws the moon out
from behind a cloud

The versatility that the participle provided is gone, but it also may be true that this version rings more pleasurably to the ear.

Well, anyway he speaks about that in his book and I just appreciated that he addressed that point; no other haiku book that I have ever read had ever done so.

(By the way, if you are interested in reading about this particular point for yourself it is to be found starting on page 79 in the "Haiku Grammar" section.)

***
In conclusion:

The author thoroughly fills you in about haiku's origins, evolution and its future.

There are many examples of successful haiku from many of today's practicing haiku poets included with valuable analysis for each.

This is a very worthwhile book for becoming acquainted with the haiku verse form and I could find no fault with it.

I heartily recommend it to you.

. . . but anyone serious about writing haiku in English (or any language, if they read English) will find *Haiku: A Poet's Guide* invaluable. Unlike other books on haiku which make your head spin with lists and rules for beginners, this one helps beginners get off the ground and soon reach the point where they can evaluate their own work. Coming as it does from the editor of the premiere English-language haiku magazine and a fine poet (get his *Fresh Scent*, while you're at it), this book goes into more depth, yields more insight, than anything else available in the field so far. This is the one to keep on your desk or in your backpack.

So, you may be hesitating over the price. Don't! Lee Gurga's, Haiku a Poet's Guide, is a MUST have. (Yes, Jane Reichhold's, Writing and Enjoying Haiku, and William J Higginson's, The Haiku Handbook ARE necessary) But this book completes the triumvirate. Gurga's clear, engaging writing style, explanation and example illuminate the path to haiku. If you want to try to write your own or have lingering unanswered questions, this book will dispel any doubts. It's exactly what it says it is, "Haiku: a Poet's Guide", and worth every penny.

Since my trauma-related dreams surfaced three years ago, I've been to three counselors who welcomed trauma patients. After reading this book, I realize they knew little of the territory. And of the several books on trauma I've read, none came close to this thorough one in its scope and supportiveness. I hadn't realized my easily triggered nervous system, allergies, extreme sensitivity, and difficulty in planning, organizing and moving ahead with my life were trauma-related. In fact, I was about to embark on expensive allergy desensitization work, but after reading this, decided to get at the deeper causes instead. I'm already noticing an improvement in symptoms, just having worked through the book. And I wouldn't have made it through the book - it's been such an emotionally charged mirror for me - if Cori were not so encouraging. A golden strength seemed to be transmitted through her words, almost like a healing voice in my head as I read.

Cori writes as a fellow traveler. She presents up-to-date information on physiology, psychology, and spirituality. Then skillfully and gently guides you through the landscape, asking you questions about you, including exercises to help you identity your symptoms and your needs. Like a good friend, she shares what has worked well for her. Many books make you feel like a statistic or one of a herd of patients. Not this one.

This book has been pivotal, transforming the way I sense my inertia, vulnerability, and frustration. It's given me a glimpse that it's possible to fully heal, and what that might look like.

Start here. The focus is on you, not on a theory or technique, although you'll get an insightful, comprehensive overview of the best therapies for trauma, both professional and self-help.

You can experience HEALING FROM TRAUMA! I'm in therapy with a trauma therapist. I've been in therapy before but never with a therapist who specializes in treating people dealing with trauma. There is a difference! Recently, I started reading this book. My therapist and the author are on the same page when it comes to helping me learn to thrive and not just survive.
Chapters It's a Body Thing and The Footprints of Trauma explain in an easy to read manner how and why your thinking and feelings got so distorted. Now I know why I get so confused in certain stressful situations.
The author writes, "I believe the ideal therapist for working with trauma is one who has personal experience with trauma, has been in trauma therapy of his or her own, has trained in one or more of the trauma therapies, is in peer or clinical supervision (which helps with blind spots), and can describe to you in simple language the methods and goals of therapy." I totally agree. Please, do not get a regular therapist! Get only a trauma specialist. Mine knows me better than I know me.
The chapter on Tools For Living discusses objectivity and looking at evidence and consequences. Byron Katie's The Work is an excellent example of a process that will help keep you from "a victim stance, a self-protective armoring, an attitude of defeat." I included that last sentence because I held on to my victim story for a long time. You don't have to do that.
Jasmin Lee Cori is a very insightful writer. In the chapter on Spiritual Issues she writes, "It is a trap when we get so intoxicated by transcendent states that we want to stay there and not deal with our real problems in the world." I think "intoxicated" is the right word for all the different things I did to try to feel okay.
I can't recommend enough: Read this book! Get sober if you've been self-medicating with alcohol, drugs, food, shopping, religion, etc. Get a trauma specialist therapist and talk to them if the urge to run comes up. These are my recommendations because they are working for me.
Begin the journey. It will be painful at times but it's worth it. By the way, the trauma I experienced was sexual abuse. There is HEALING FROM TRAUMA!!!!

A Wonderful Resource for Those Affected by Trauma

If you are a trauma survivor -- especially if you are just beginning to deal with your trauma and symptoms -- please read this book.

This is, finally, the book I've been looking for and really needed a year or two ago when I first started dealing directly with my trauma history and its affects on my life! I recommend this whole heartedly as a great resource for survivors and their loved ones. It is the best general guide to the subject that I have read.

I have read most of the other books folks typically recommend, and usually found them interesting and helpful. At the same time, I felt like they were either to detailed and technical (Levine, Herman, Rothschild, etc.) to really be practical. Or, they had too many exercises, reflections, and inspirational quotes for me (The Courage to Heal and its kindred) and I found them a bit too sappy and off-putting for where I was in my process.

In this book, Cori strikes just the right balance of information, suggestions, and tone. She also does a wonderful job of summarizing what trauma is, how it affects the body and mind, what therapeutic methods can be helpful, and how to generally care for oneself through the healing process. She also provides tools for self-reflection, and intersperses stories from other survivors that make the data relevant and come to life.

If this book had been available when I started dealing with my trauma, I think I would have understood the situation better and would have been more equipped to make good choices and deal with things in a caring and effective way.

While this is clearly a sort of overview or handbook, Cori provides plenty of additional references and resources so you can do further investigating on your own.

My one small quibble (and it's is very small), is that she only mentions meditation and mindfulness practices in passing. I have found these practices to be essential to my healing. But I recognize that they are a bit outside the mainstream, and certainly aren't for everyone.

Overall, a wonderful resource!

I teach a group of inmates at a local detention center. Most of them are there for alcohol and drug abuse. However, this book aptly points out that we are all addicted to something, whether it be material things, or even relationships. Dr. Jampolsky explains in a caring, loving manner how to overcome our addictions. His thoughts are based on "A Course in Miracles." I also recommend his father's book called, "Love is Letting Go of Fear." (Gerald Jampolsky)

This book is not just for those plagued with obvious addiction, it is a call to reflect upon the mind and uncover the barriers that don't allow us to experience real love, which everyone is struggling with at some extent. The foundation for the book is within it's preface: Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all of the barriers within yourself that you have built against it. (A Course in Miracles)

Jampolsky uses personal stories and stories of real people who suffer from the ability to feel love and assists the mind in considering a different perspective, which allows love to flow in. I believe the question isn't; Are we addicted, but, which of my addictions are causing me the most pain?

As a Life Coach using the modality of Rapid Eye Technology, I assist many suffering from addiction in being able to feel "real love" which is where Jampolsky directs his audience. Real love is found within, not from some other external entity. The more we begin to feel real love, the less we become dependent on the false hit we get from addiction in any form.

I recommend this book to all who struggle with addiction, all who care about one who is addicted, and all who attempt to assist others in breaking free from the grasp of addiction. Did I miss anyone?

The entire group received so much insight into their own addictive patterns and many were able to release so much to the Light and Love of God.

I read an excerpt from this book at an on-line site. I ordered the book. I started reading it the same night I received it. I thought I would only read a few pages. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. The questions/situations Dr. Jampolsky posed was me. It was like looking in a mirror. The book offers lots of life situations/problems, and wonderful suggestions to solve them. This book was a "mind" saver for me. And I like the other reviewer, use it as my Bible.

It amazes me that a great karaoke book took this long to come out. As a seasoned karaokian(?), I can say that there really is no stone left unturned in this book. Song lists, drink recipes, karaoke history, a glossary - everyone has something to gain from the pages of this book.

Other bonuses: nice paper stock, funny pictures, and super-happy artwork. But my favorite? Its size. Small enough to carry as a guide or give as a gift, yet bold enough to claim real estate on my coffee table.

I almost feel bad for only paying eight bucks for it...

I love to sing karaoke even though I'm not very good, and this book is a boon to me! Author Raina Lee does an excellent job of researching the origins of this performative pastime as well as uncovering some of the lesser known and arcane chapters in its ongoing history. An exhaustive yet fun exegesis on all things karaoke related, it includes great photos, hilarious themed songlists and even reviews and rundowns of the best and most unique karaoke venues in the country. This book is absolutely necessary for anyone interested in karaoke, from the casual I'll-only-sing-if-I'm-drunk dipper to the serious American Idol wannabe. Plus the author is cute. I love this book!!!

Ms. Lee truly has proven herself to be THE karaoke queen with Hit Me With Your Best Shot! In it, she reveals many karaoke secrets and tips sure to enlighten all levels of public crooners, from the practiced pro to the ingenue. A mid-level performer myself, I especially enjoyed reading about the karaoke singer "types". Hilarious and all true!! The suggested song lists were helpful too.

Since I'm not big on reading, I liked how the book was broken up into manageable chunks, with funny drawings and quotations throughout. Also, I'm a huge fan of quizzes, and apparently Ms. Lee is too because she had one in the book!

The only downsides to the book were that I wished it included a CD with some of the songs Ms. Lee recommended. Also, the karaoke bars that Ms. Lee reviewed didn't really cover the Pacific Northwest. It would have been nice to have a more comprehensive list.

All in all, a very humorous read and I already have a couple of friends in mind that I might buy it for.

There's also some insider knowledge on where karaoke videos come from, and the origins of the karaoke home machine. Raina breaks down the archetypes of the karaoke singer. I must know someone from EVERY description. It's hilarious...truly great writing! Great gift for any music lover or karaoke freak!

An Unthreatening Approach to a Threatening Subject

It's the rare person who relishes conflict. Most of us live our lives either avoiding it, which never works for long, or expressing it in counter-productive ways. Even those of us who deal with conflict on a professional basis---I'm a divorce lawyer and mediator---are not immune to the physical and emotional toll that it can take on us (not to mention on our clients). With that in mind, I'm happy to report that Lee Raffel's new book, "I Hate Conflict!", is a useful, accessible, and unthreatening approach to a subject that most people dread. Drawing on a lifetime of hard-earned lessons (including an abusive first marriage), and a long career as a social worker and marriage counselor, Ms. Raffel looks at conflict from a variety of angles, but always with a view to offering sensible advice and real-world solutions. My guess is that she's an excellent therapist, because she has a client-centered approach that comes through loud and clear. The reader feels that he's in the same room with her, engaged in conversation with a wise and caring counselor, a counselor who knocks herself out to make her clients' lives more satisfying and less stressful. I recommend the book.

"I Hate Conflict" is rich with information around conflict and the people involved in it. Special care is taken for those of us who tend to avoid conflicts. It is difficult for us, who do not like conflicts to like a book about it or to even spend time with this topic. Lee Raffel tries successfully to make it as easy as possible. "I Hate Conflict" is factual, realistic, clear and to the point.

Lee Raffel ends each Chapter with a small amount of homework. It helps for a deeper understanding and more important to get the connection to ones own life.

I do like that she extensively quotes other important books to the subject and in the vicinity of it. Lee Raffel even encourages her readers to read other peoples work.

I do recommend "I Hate Conflict" for reading, reference and for just spending time with it.

I have added Lee's book to my Master Bibliography for all of my classes - conflict management, emotional intelligence, leadership, coaching and more.
She is so good at making it easy to understand and follow. This is a very valuable book to have around when you know that conflict conversation needs to happen.

I loved this book as a little girl. My brother and I used to make our older sister read it to us over and over. I'm sad to see it's out of print. Much better than The Littles or other stories about tiny dwellers amongst us.

A friend and I were discussing books that we pick up over and over again throughout our lives and of course I thought of this one. I loved this book so much that my copy is falling apart at the seams. What a wonderful story, so descriptive, and so imaginative. I watched my dollhouse like a hawk for years. Anyone would love this story, my brother even loved it. I wish it were in print so I could get a copy for my god daughter.

I'm a 31 yr old mother of two and need to find this book! I can't tell you how often I have thought about this story. When I was a little girl, I would read it over and over again. A little girl discovers a royal family living in her dollhouse! The book is so descriptive when it comes to explaining all the miniature items the King, Queen, and the Peanut Butter babies used in their everyday life. It's been over 20 years and I have not forgotten about this book! I hope my children can one day read it.

This truly is a wonderful book. Although my son is only 19 months old, I am trying to locate a copy to someday share with him. He might not love it the way I have, but I will enjoy re-reading it with him!

Opening sentence: "'Oh, drat!' said the tiniest voice in the world."

Ellie has a dollhouse in her room, but "The house seems real, and the dolls didn't, so I put them away." She awakens one morning to find new tenants, real ones. King Borra Borra, who stands about 6 inches high, has moved in with the 11 royal babies. The Queen is off on adventures, leaving the homebody King to care happily for the babies. Despite the Queen's wandering ways, the King and Queen have a wonderful relationship, and Ellie is delighted to provide the family's daily fare of peanut butter (for the babies), and raisins and cookies (for the royal couple).

It isn't really a doll story, because these are living beings, albeit tiny ones, and the King has some things to teach Ellie, not only about housekeeping ("I happen to enjoy housekeeping, and I like to see it done well") but also about friendship, change, and how to attend to the needs of others. This is an especially strong story for imaginative daughters, loving fathers, and liberated mothers.

A ravenous beastie, technology eats everything it touches. Our daily lives, the way we shop, how we communicate, our work habits, the way we entertain ourselves, and how we exist day by day have all irreversibly transmogrified in the maw of the computer and information age. Now we live like network packets, shooting from node to node with rarely a pause, gathering and transporting information. In degrees of busyness, we've outdone the bees. Such a tsunami of change has to impact the way we govern ourselves. And of course it does. Not even the law escapes technology.

Patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets. Technology has chiseled into each one of these modes of intellectual property protection. But the issues remain complicated and hairy, and this book, with text thick as shag carpet, provides a detailed starting point for exploring the legal implications of technology.

After a thorough introduction to the United States' legal system, some 75 pages worth, the book dives into patent law. Any questions about the nature of patents such as cost, usefulness, novelty, nonobviousness, infringement, or validity receive apt treatment. The book even throws in an overview of the significant Patent Reform Act, not yet passed as of this writing. This Act promises to overhaul the United States patent system, potentially obsoleting some of the information presented. Concerning the patentability of computer programs, the whole drama gets laid out like an adventure tale. Computer programs didn't become patentable overnight. Some even doubted their eligibility for protection.

Trade secrets and their discontents, such as reverse engineering, receive a bulky chapter. These issues affect nearly all technology employees. Use caution, because tricks, shortcuts, or streamlined processes taken from one company to the next could, depending on the circumstances, misappropriate secret information. And when that happens the lawyers come out swinging.

The fuzzy nature of Copyright law receives as much tree bark as patent law. Questions arise on this subject often, especially in regard to the internet. Can I copy an image and put it on my site? Can I legally download digital music? What if a .jpeg doesn't have a copyright notice? The book provides a suitable background to answer these. And, similar to patents, the copyrightablility of computer programs also weaved a loopy route. At first they received overwhelming protection, which disturbed judges, who then abstracted, filtered, and compared protection down to a mere kernal of expression. The entire yarn gets told.

The book ends with chapters on trademarks, domain name issues, tort liability, privacy law, and issues related to contracts, particularly "shrink-wrap" and "click-wrap" licenses. At over 600 pages, the book defies summary. Prepare for a full brain.

Along the way, excerpts from actual court cases, including many Supreme Court decisions, bolster the main text. Not only that, a case study, CoolEdge, runs through the entire length of the book, elucidating murky concepts with comprehensible examples.

This book won't turn readers into lawyers, but it will open up a world of technology law to those with the gusto to brave its dense contents. Some chapters take upwards of two or three hours to complete. But the effort offers great rewards of legal knowledge at a detailed level unobtainable in most survey books or on FAQ websites. Best of all, no legal knowledge is required upon entry. Absolute beginners can comprehend every word in this book. As such it provides a great, but ardous, starting point for technology law.

I bought this book because it was the most recent publication purporting to explain technology law. Although I thought the price was a little high, I sure got more than my money's worth. This book really covers the most important and interesting topics in technology law, and it does so extremely well. Biotech, Internet patents, privacy, obscenity, copyrights, trade secrets, click-wraps, domain names, design protection, strategies for computer programs, the Microsoft Antitrust case-you name it and this book has got it. The book also deals with international matters, such as the WTO, and international strategic considerations. The court case examples are well selected, and the editing is superb. They are not to short to be trivial, but not to long either. I also visited the Web site mentioned on the back cover. It already has a bunch of helpful updates, including the Napster and DVD encryption (DeCSS) debates, among many others. This really is a great book. I recommend it highly.

Call this book Release 2.0! It's a fine upgrade from Prof. Burgunder's prior release.

With the growth in the internet and the advent of business method patents, interest in patent, trademark and copyright issues has surged to new heights. Awareness and integration of these legal aspects into our management of technology is absolutely vital for the future.

I practice law. Specifically, I work on intellectual property matters. I am also building two websites. As a result, I am keen on staying on top of my field. Professor Burgunder's new treatise is an important addition to the literature in this field. He writes in an accessible manner: open to students, interested people and legal practitioners alike. In addition, the arrangement of the book is well thought-out: you don't have to read or study it from the first chapter. Depending on your familiarity with this field, you can select topics and areas to review or you can build a college course around the book.

I was also delighted to see that Dr. Burgunder has been intelligent in the use of a web site to keep the book current.

If you are interested in technology and legal issues, this is a great book to help you! I recommend it heartily.

A splendid piece of work! It is timely and up-to-date with all the most recent & important technological law issues, including the Internet. It contains sophisticated analysis, but in an easy-to-read style. I particularly liked how the Internet is treated in the context of associated technology issues, rather than segregated as a separate unrelated universe. A big plus is the web site connected to the book where Burgunder provides updates about current issues --- such as Napster, Internet linking, and the antitrust case against Microsoft. This will keep the material fresh for years to come! I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about technology law. It's a winner!
