One of the MOST useful guides to SPPS and statistical procedures

This book has been a life-saver. Its clear and concise about most of the main techniques you might need for analyzing your data. Its written as a practical guide to help you understand which statistical procedure to use. I'm a PhD student in Epidemiology and this is the book that really helped clear my concepts about the various statistical techniques and most importantly how and when to use them. All the classes I took in advanced mathematical statistics were full of jargon and theoretical stuff. This book is what helped me really understand the various techniques. Consider it a like a Dummies Guide to Practical Statistics..... I hope the author writes another book called SPSS for Advanced Statistics.

I found this book to be very helpful in understanding the output from the SPSS statistical software. I would recommend it to anyone using this software. This book was listed as a recommended book for a class I am taking in intermediate statistics. Normally I do not buy those books listed for my classes as "recommended". This book has been so helpful in understanding the data output from the statistical software, I would definitely recommend anyone using this software to purchase this book. I especially like the tips for writing that is given in each section. these tips make your write-up of the data look and sound very professional as well as making it easy to understand the write-ups in the professional journals.

I was lucky enough to have had one of Dr. Robbins classes at Michigan State University. His work is great because it is scholarly yet anyone can read it and understand it. His ability to make archaeology approachable to the masses is what makes this book so special. I highly reccomend it.

Great Morale Boost

Review Date: 2003-01-06
Having spent 27 years with Cincinnati PD and now a Sheriff's Office, I can not recommend this book highly enough for every law enforcement officer in the country. Even though this book seems geared toward the public on understanding their relationship with law enforcement, it does an excellent job of cheerleading those in law enforcement who are still committed to doing police work. Every city manager, county commissioner, council member, etc. should read this book to see why they should stand behind their law enforcement agencies if they want to improve them. It's hard to hit a home run if the home team fans keep 'booing.' As Americans we need to cheer the everyday heroic acts of law enforcement officers, not just when it's politically correct. Dr. Blum explains why the 'occuptaional bigotry' against police by some in the media creates a lack of spirit in officers that causes them to hesitate to do their jobs, which may cost them or other innocent people their lives. Stoning the Keepers at the Gate is a great morale booster for anyone in law enforcement.

This book was so accurate to what happens in the real life of what happens to an officer under duress from the police environemnt as well as the public's view of law enforcement. This book was a mental saver for me as I had to endure nearly four years of public and departmental scrutiny for my actions with a life or death lethal encounter with a suspect. I have had 7 years of law enforcement experience with the Chandler PD in Arizona and was the first officer charged since Wyatt Earp in the state of Arizona with an on duty shooting. I was crucified in the media, by my department and city and was laid the blame for all that was wrong with law enforcement in the state. A jury trial and acquital as well as a state police board review proved that the only wrong doing was actually from my peers in the department, city as well as the county attorney who made my case a platform for political endeavors as well as media's facination with categorizing which case they will champion and who they will make a scape goat. In Arizona, a good cop is a dead cop, which makes for good press. I have suffered tremendously and have found little support in attempts to get a law enforcement career again due to the politics. Lawrence Blum's books (Force Under Pressure and Stoning the Keepers Gates) have been a blessing only second to reading my Bible that have helped me make sense of my emotions, tribulations and my future. I use his material when I speak to other officers, church groups and even prisoners to help them understand the same things I now do. Good book, good reading, and a good way to save your sanity and possiblily the sanity and life of a fellow officer in need.

A Moving Memoir From a "Mud Marine"
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-16
During World War II, thousands of young men fought and died in the steaming jungles of the Pacific islands. Many of these men were only teenagers. Some used false birth certificates so they could join the armed forces early. Despite their age, these men developed a bond among themselves unlike any other. These men trained and fought together side by side, each willing to give up his life for a fellow Marine without questions asked. Lawrence F. Kirby was one of these men, and he re-creates his wartime experiences in this excellent collection of personal memoirs.

Kirby joined the Marines at age eighteen and trained at Parris Island, South Carolina. After surviving the rigors of boot camp, he then transferred to Camp LeJeune for advanced infantry training. The next stop was Omaha, Nebraska and finally on to California. During these stops, Kirby polished his fighting skills until, in his own words, he could kill a man with his bare hands. Friendships were developed along the way that lasted for many years.

Kirby served in three island campaigns during the Pacific war: Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima. Each presented different challenges, but Kirby managed to survive and return home after the war. Kirby's job was as an infantry scout. He was charged with listening for enemy movement and blazing trails for other groups to follow. He was wounded several times, but he somehow managed to survive.

In his book, Kirby describes several moments; some funny, others poignant. For instance, an entire chapter is devoted to a conversation he held with another Marine whose name Kirby didn't even know. The Marine ended up dying in Kirby's arms later in the battle. Another chapter describes Kirby's first encounter with an enemy soldier. Kirby ended up killing him, but his reaction was one of grief and sorrow. He ended up cradling the dead Japanese soldier in his arms, weeping for him and his family. Some of the lighter moments consisted of booby-trapping a latrine and carousing with his friends

One common theme expressed throughout the book is the unique bond shared by the Marines. Each man was willing to die for his buddies, and the friendship formed between these men was deeper than most other kinds of friendship. There were times when a young soldier threw himself on a live hand grenade to save his fellow comrades, or risk saving a wounded comrade under heavy enemy fire. These men never questioned their actions, they simply reacted, and knew that others would do the same for them. In Kirby's words, he saw each Marine as a brother in a common struggle, and each man was dedicated to helping every other man to survive.

This is an excellent book. Lawrence Kirby does a wonderful job of describing what life was like as a Marine fighting in the Pacific. He covers the full spectrum; from funny pranks on fellow Marines to holding a buddy in his arms and watching him die. There is great humor, but there is also great terror. Kirby experienced both, and he does a masterful job of describing each emotion in his book.

I give this fine book my highest recommendation. Marines shared a unique bond, and Lawrence Kirby describes that bond. The love for one another and the mutual support and inspiration were what enabled these brave men to sustain during the horrible campaigns of the Pacific war.

Not your typical war book

The is a really a lovely collection of short stories told by a real "mud marine". Each stories covers part of Mr. Kirby's war-time experience, from hilarious incidents to heartbreaking events. Finish one chapter laughing, the next with tears in your eyes. Moreover, the tone of this book is less gung-ho shoot 'em up story telling, but more of a tribute to fallen brothers, and the transformation of a young wise-cracking kid into a man sickened to this day by the concept of war. Terrific details of life during the battles on Iwo Gima and Guam.

Great Systematic Study of the Supreme Court
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-29
Of the three branches of government, it is the Supreme Court that remains a mystery to most Americans. As the author points out, most Americans are unable to name a significant number of sitting Justices, let alone understand the many nuances of the US judicial system. However, in The Supreme Court, Dr. Baum attempts to clarify the structures and processes of the Court, as well as explain its effect on the formation of public policy.

Dr. Baum separates the book in to sections, each addressing the major components of the Court: the Justices, the selection of cases, the decision making process, the policy outputs, and lastly, the impact of the Court on the other branches of government and society as a whole.

Aside from discussing the mechanics of the Court, Baum delves into its broader impact on both the executive and legislative branch, the creation of public policy, and the shaping of America.

In conclusion, Baum's book is an excellent work covering the many aspects of the Supreme Court, written in a clear and interesting manner.

Journal of Vascular Surgery Review
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-01
Aortic surgery, territory that until recently was only explored by surgical specialists, has rapidly evolved into an area traversed by multiple competing specialties. To stay the course and steer clear of danger, Gewertz and Schwartz have edited a timely monograph on the subject that functions as a review of where we've been, as well as a perspective on where we've going. These editors have enlisted an outstanding group of authors to guide interested readers through up﷓to﷓date information on aortic surgery, while maintaining appropriate balance in the vital area of reconstructive vascular surgery.

Section editors selected coauthors from their own institutions so that consistent thought prevails throughout the sections of the book. Developmental anomalies of the aorta and basic principles of aortic surgery nicely complement more clinically oriented chapters that fully cover the current practice of aortic and visceral artery surgery. Two sections in particular (thoracoabdominal and pararenal aortic aneurysms and renovascular disease) are extremely well written. They provide depth that the trainee will find in few other texts and that will enlighten even the most experienced vascular surgeon. Photographic images are sharp, and artwork is well done. A series of color plates is provided at the beginning of the text to enhance corresponding black-and-white images in some of the chapters.

Thanks to diligent editing, the volume maintains uniformity of style and content despite representation from six major university medical centers. Even the reference lists are relatively current, which is a feat in itself. This monograph will appeal to all clinicians interested in aortic surgery. It is affordably priced, full of technical pearls, and well-written. I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to comment on a book that really meets its mark.

Treatment of the aorta and its branch vessels is one of the major areas of interest for vascular surgeons. As stated in the foreword of Surgery of the Aorta and Its Branches, the last decade has seen tremendous advances in this field, including improvements in operative results for thoracoabdominal and visceral reconstruction, detection and management of perioperative complications, and the development of endovascular interventional techniques. In the preface, Dr Gewertz states that the purpose of this text is to address the "full range of aortic surgery" and provide "up-to-date data, along with those personal insights that enhance judgment in difficult situations." He and his coeditors have succeeded admirably.

The text is thoughtfully organized into 9 sections, including "Developmental Anomalies of the Aorta," "Basic Principles of Aortic Surgery," "Infrarenal Aortic Aneurysms," "Thoracoabdominal and Pararenal Aneurysms," "Aortoiliac Occlusive Disease," "Renovascular Disease," "Mesenteric Disease," "Aortic Graft Infection," and "Endovascular Surgery." The chapters in these sections are almost without exception excellent, and there is little redundancy in the material covered. Historical perspective is provided in many areas, along with accurate and readable descriptions of current concepts in the pathophysiology of the disease processes discussed. There are also several excellent chapters that provide a critical discussion of imaging modalities in aortic disease, anesthetic options, preoperative evaluation, and management of postoperative complications.

However, the chapters on operative technique were of greatest interest in this text. These are full of personal insights and preferences that can only come from surgeons with extensive experience. Many of these insights are rarely mentioned in texts or articles, and they have clear practical value. The usefulness of these chapters is uniform throughout the text, and while it may be unfair to single out specific sections, I found the chapters on developmental anomalies, thoracoabdominal and infrarenal techniques, and renovascular disease to be especially useful. Indeed, the detail present in the section on renovascular disease is rarely presented in such a concise and easy-to-read format.

The section on endovascular techniques may not be as extensive as one might wish, although the depth of coverage is probably appropriate for a technique still in rapid evolution. There are short but unbiased comparisons of the results using different endografts, a readable and useful discussion of preoperative imaging and planning for endografting, and an honest discussion of the problems associated with the development of this field. The text is nicely bound and clearly illustrated. It is a bit cumbersome to have all the color photographs placed in the front of the book, but this is a small criticism. On balance, the thoroughness, objectivity, and clarity of each chapter far outweigh any shortcomings. In summary, this is one of the best reference books on this subject that I have read. It is a "must buy" for the practicing vascular surgeon and surgical fellow.
