I picked this up in Louisiana, to dull the 6 hours of fly time back home to Wasington DC. Wow! Frankly, I read it twice, and have passed it on to a friend, and he'd better take good care of it. A great story, with details, intriguing situations, and thorough emotional context. A really great book. I highly recommend it.

It could have happened. Edwin Rommel meets William Faulkner for a pre - WWII romp through North Mississippi in search of Nathan Bedford Forrest's war waging strategy. What fun and what a great means of absorbing history in this delighful work of fiction...or did it happen?

Museums in Crisis

Review Date: 2006-05-02
In the present volume, an attempt is made to deal with the relationship between art and society today in one of its most important aspects - the museum. Critical examinations of the museum's past, present, and future range over such problems as a mass audience and democratic objectives; the functions of the director, curator and trustees; the museums relationship to the university and education, and its role in defining art. The contributors are well known British and American art critics and historians - people involved professionally with the very institutionsa they are criticixing: John E. Bowlt, Edward F. Fry, Grace Glueck, Ernest van den Haag, Hugh Kenner, Max Kozloff, Thomas W. Leavitt, Linda Nochlin, John R. Spencer, and Bryan Robertson.

It has been an exemplary sample of my belief system as a designer. I was a student when I learned of Halprin's work, and have, always had a sense of affinity for the philosophic approach he has been able to publish. I am thankful that individuals, like Mr. & Mrs. Halprin have been able to promote a conscientious process for decision-making. I think I lent my book to someone and now I am unable to find it in my library. Either I must stop lending books, or

This is a book that can be read over and over. Both my 3 and 6 year olds fell in love with the superbly imaginative and textured illustrations and the fun tabs to pull and make things move. It's a book which leads to discussions, art projects and giggles. It's also so interactive that it feels like more than a book. It makes a great gift for all the birthdays you have this year.

Genious book!

Larry Wonderling writes a moving story about the very real people who live in San Francisco's sometimes infamous "Tenderloin." This should be a television series!

A Most Memorable book, one you'll never forget.

Reading this book was an intensely human experience that I'll
never forget...all of the stories were deeply human, stranger than fiction and moved me to tears and laughter.
I couldn't set the book aside until finished.

Seductive Illusions made me think about what our institutions aren't doing for individuals.... and what needs to be done to help us help others. Fascinating reading that changed my concepts of truth and reality.

I Want to Be Marilyn Hacker When I Grow Up!

I suspect she can rattle off blank verse in iambic pentameter without thinking about it. She can be as earthy as Sharon Olds ("Mother II"), self-deprecating as Philip Larkin ("Riposte") or amusingly Byronic ("Ballade of Ladies Lost & Found.") I appreciate her older poetry, but my admiration increases as I read the newer work, particularly the poems from the most recent collection in this book, Going Back to the River; I would mention "April Interval," "Nights of 1964-1966: the Old Reliable," "Elevens" and `Against Silence" as being particularly striking. She is a diva at my favorite forms: the sonnet and the sestina, and now, thanks to her I have found a new one, the canzone.

Truly Deserving of its National Book Award

Hacker is a master of the sonnet, sestina, and villanelle. I'm always amazed when I arrive at the end of one of her poems and discover that elegant and natural words are arranged in one of these structured ways. Her words and images pull you into the poems and into Hacker's mind. Elegant. Beautiful.

The second part of the series concentrates on shorter distances (800m to 5,000m/5miles). Along with general information and discussions the most useful part of the book are the practical day-by-day 10-week schedules. The schedules are very specific - depending on time goals, initial preparation and the distance. Excellent book!

This book gives you everything you want and more! I followed this closely when I had a crummy track coach in high school and my times ended up being exactly at the race pace I was training for. I have used these workouts in coaching as well and have seen great success with them. A lot of the books that come out nowadays are just commentaries on runners--this one gives you the year-round training schedules you've been looking for.

Great African American Plays

Review Date: 2005-04-30
This is a good book to have in your theater library (especially for black actors/thespians). There are some great contemporary pieces and monologues (especially for Black men). I have always been supportive of The Theodore Award winning plays. The characters are real and the language is rich. The writing is great. Most of the plays are short, so these plays would be good for a burgeoning African American theater company or ensemble to produce.

Highly recommended for any theater library

Since the early part of the 20th century, Chicago has been a national leader in the production of black theater. There are currently six black companies, and black productions are regularly featured at the three Tony Award-winning regional theater companies.

Theodore Ward (1902 - 1983) mentored and encouraged many aspiring dramatists in Chicago from 1968 until his death. To honor Ward, and to aid black playwrights in the development and production of scripts, Columbia College Chicago established the Theodore Ward Prize for African American Playwriting in 1985. Only full-length plays addressing the African American are considered, and the playwright must be of African American descent. Since one of the goals is to uncover and identify new works, scripts which have received professional production are not eligible.

This anthology of prize-winning plays is the first in a series to be published every three years. Compiled and edited by Chuck Smith (currently Resident Director at Chicago's Goodman Theater, and affiliated with the prize for fifteen years) it presents seven plays spanning nearly two decades, with diverse subject matter and treatments. Christopher Moore's "The Last Season" (First Prize 1987-88) immerses us in the final days of the Negro Leagues. The most recent offering, Shepsu Aakhu's "Kiwi Black" ( First Prize 2001-02) tells the story of adolescent son coming of age under the watchful eye of a tough-love father.

But my synopses can't possibly do these scripts justice. Highly recommended for any theater library!

Only if You can't get the Poisoning of Eros.

Review Date: 2007-12-29
You may not agree with the conclusions but you can't argue with the church history. It is very plain that the the doctorine on sex that we are taught today is not from the bible but rather from Roman Greco Platonic philosophy that infiltrated the church in the 2nd century. It pained me that the Poisoning of eros was out of print. (Though you can get one easily here or other used book sites) The Poisoning of Eros: Sexual Values in Conflict It enlightens us on what is biblical and what is cultural and anti scripturual dualist philosophy. This new book is just a readers digest version of the Poioning of Eros. I would Hightly recommend that you get that book instead of this one. This one the author starts giving too much liberal opinion rather than letting the history speak for itself. However If you cant get the out of print version it is a good read. Unfortunatly he goes off the liberal deep end when he speaks about the divinity of Jesus. I would recomend Dirt Greed and Sex by Wilianm CountrymanDirt, Greed, and Sex: Sexual Ethics in the New Testament and Their Implications for Today and Divine Sex: Liberating sex from religious tradition by Philo Thelos. Divine Sex: Liberating Sex from Religious TraditionThese are must haves for all serious students of the Bible that want to study the topic of sex and the bible.

Another Sex Scandal Exposed!

Review Date: 2007-03-05
In Sexual Liberation, The Scandal of Christendom, Raymond J. Lawrence, Jr., catches Christianity with its pants down regarding its failure to deliver a positive sex ethic. He traces the roots of sex-negativity in the Greco-Roman culture and how it it was adopted by the early church fathers, then perpetuated over the centuries in both the Catholic and Protestant churches. He also traces the sex positivity of the Jewish culture and how it has been drowned out by the powers that have been, and why. Sexual Liberation is a well-written, well-researched, well-documented re-working of Lawrence's earlier book, The Poisoning of Eros. His new book is loaded with insightful stories that make for thought-provoking and enjoyable reading. I couldn't put it down. The dust-jacket illustration deserves mention as it not only undergirds the central message of the book, but it is also a delightful expression of the beauty of sex. Sexual Liberation offers much-needed balance against the sexual addiction bandwagon that Christendom is currently riding. Every clergyman, indeed, every thinking believer, should read this book and then "declare the year of the Lord's favor" regarding sex.
