Comprehensive Clinical Work

Review Date: 2001-09-06
This is a seminal text for those clinicians truly wishing to begin to use hypnosis in their practices. It contains all the basic theory, techniques, research, clinical cases and dilemmas of a hypnotherapy practice. His seminars are equally wonderful, with ample theory, practice and case review. Although his style can be initially experienced as intellectual, having trained with him, I find him a brilliant and compassionate clinician. I highly recommend this book to the serious clinician. (Oops! I apologize for having written two reviews of this text, although both are true. I simply forgot I had already written one, due to delay in posting time. However, this is a terrific work, not to be missed. RCK-Psy.D.)

Recognizing and Remembering Who We Are
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-13
I like being surprised and prodded when I read books about spirituality and faith, and "I Am Therefore I Am" took me places I never expected. Having spent my entire life trying to "figure it all out", Doochin's book led me away from my confused mind straight to the place where all the answers lie--my heart.

In a society determined to find truth and meaning through the capabilities of our minds, Larry Doochin's assertion in "I Am Therefore I Am" that "...we are not here to learn" is a startling statement. I found myself asking if spiritual growth isn't about learning, then what IS it all about? Doochin's healing odyssey through what we see, experience, think and feel on this earth revealed to him that our existence is about recognition and remembrance. In a world that constantly bombards us with demands to learn more and "fix" what is wrong with us, Doochin's question "Wouldn't it be great if you didn't have to change anything about yourself? If all you had to do was remember and recognize who you really are?" strikes me deeply. It's a question we all want to answer with a loud and resounding YES.

Doochin freely offers us spiritual seekers respite from the sometimes grueling striving our minds engage in to collect and process the enormous amount of stimuli we are confronted with each day. His book takes us through seeing the world as it is rather than as we see it by encouraging the reader to unclench any beliefs about the nature of the universe and our place in it. "If you release your beliefs, or you at least witness them, then the current carries you along effortlessly. Life becomes easier, much simpler." Doochin tackles our views on faith, reality, emotion, morality and purpose and consistently returns to this: "Love is the essence of all that is." When we remember this as our true nature, he says, we can more frequently experience the presence of God. Throughout the book he suggests ways to simply spark our remembrance rather than reaching for some illusory mental construct of what we should BE or BE DOING. "You are not here to do anything. You are here to be. You are fulfilling your role on Earth just by being an expression of God in form, for this is Creation fulfilled. This is Love."

"I Am, Therefore I Am" is a great reminder, an excellent resource to return to again and again to help quiet those nagging questions we cannot answer with our minds but must access the truth through our hearts. Doochin's book is a guide for all who want to cultivate the natural state of joy and happiness that exists in remembering and relaxing into who we truly are.

Love Resonates Higher than Football
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-30
With its intense and very detailed description of the world of college and professional football, specifically, the life of a young and naïve superstar named Kevin Styles, you would think that "I No Longer Play the Game," a novel by aspiring author, Anthony Lawrence, would merely recount the stories of those few whose childhood dreams of playing football in the pros came true and then crumbled before their very eyes. Had it been so, I can honestly admit, that I would not have lasted more than ten minutes reading it. After all, how many times have we as readers been fooled into reading a book about an athlete who cannot cope with life after the game, when the cheers have died down and he/she has become ordinary. Such books have been written and rewritten before. On the contrary, in Lawrence's novel, although every aspect of the "Game" of football is covered, you might be happily surprised as to what "Game" the characters in the novel are actually playing.

I have always considered the mental "Game" to be tougher to play than the physical "Game". But again, if you think, I am still talking about the game of football, you could not be more further from the reality of this novel. At another level, the book is about love. Specifically, the novel is about the love between protagonist, Kevin Styles, and his not so perfect antagonist-girlfriend, Chantel Dupree, in their struggle to avoid the behaviors that inhibit men and women's ability to have close/committed relationships.

Drawn from his years of experience, both as a committed man and a former football star, Lawrence provides the readers with the right combination of humor and drama in creating this healthy guide for cultivating intimacy. I was very impressed with his style and technique. It was his approach which assisted me in separating inconsequential truth from pointless fiction and allowed me instead to find the important lessons Lawrence is attempting to convey to us: why do relationships go bad? And how do we deal with the openness and vulnerability of our hearts?

The thing I liked the most is that rather than citing cliche affirmations of relationship advice or ambiguous principles of love and war that we can easily locate in any self-help book, Lawrence allows his "players" (or characters) to talk and act out their experiences through liberal dialog, without holding any feelings back. Specifically, as a character, Styles spoke and acted from a mindset, I could honestly understand. Moreover, it was hard not to find ironic the fact that Chantel Dupree reminded me of many a woman I have either dated or met, thus making her in my opinion the true centre of the story. While she essentially longs for true closeness, Ms. Dupree's makeup, without overtly overshadowing Styles', remains the crutch which holds the true underlying theme of the book upright and allows many females, I am sure, an opportunity to relate to her struggles.

I bought the book for my girlfriend, and I ended keeping a copy for myself. You do not need to be an athlete or, for that matter, a sports fan to enjoy this book. All that is required that you be searching for the true factor at the heart of any relationship. Consequently, this book is the perfect novel for anyone who wants to truly understand the "Game" we all play in finding love.

Lawrence is a very inspirational writer. In all respects, his book is magnificent. The only thing that could make this book better is a sequel. Perhaps, if the demand is there, Lawrence will feel it necessary to quench our process of discovery as we reminisce in our own relationships. In the meantime, after you have finished enjoying the book, I suggest that you consider starting a collection of your own Anthony Lawrence novels ("The Ring of Betrayal" and "When Tomorrow Comes"). Most prints are not excessively costly, and the satisfaction they will provide I can proudly foretell will quite literally be astonishing.

Wow! What a great book! Fabulous receipes that belonged to Carol's Italian Mom...we're talking the real stuff...The stuffed artichokes which Carol came up with are a real treat and worth the price alone. Her sauce tastes like my Italian mother in law from Italy used to make...Ahh! Great stories about all of the stars who have feasted at her table. Her warm, gracious style comes through. I have given this book as a gift many times...everyone is delighted with it!

Great, Creative Take on Work in Rhetoric!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-19
In this book, DeLuca says that he aims to "perform a postmodern critical rhetoric" (and he does!) examining "image events" created by environmental activists such as Earth First!, Green Peace, and even more interestingly, anti-pollution activists (very grass roots) in Kentucky. In a nicely scattered array of chapters, DeLuca poses his argument that image events can do things (make change) while also being appropriated and rendered inert in various ways. Reading this book, one can only wonder how it would have been changed if the anti-WTO protests of N30, 1999 would have been considered -- but that is not a shortcoming: the book is thorough and very well written. Great scholarship!

Great work of profound importance (for enviros & academics)

Review Date: 2000-04-27
Through a plethora of filters including cultural studies, rhetoric, political economy, postmodernism, critical studies, media studies, activism, and environmental studies, DeLuca strongly introduces the image event, an ideograph of profound political and social implications. The author explores these image events through the tactics and strategies of radical environmental and environmental justice groups. Expertly, he deconstructs the notion of a public sphere, as grounded in today's televisual mass mediated society. Rebuffing an ideal Habermassian public sphere in which all parties and sides can equally and civilly debate issues of any interest, DeLuca questions whether all individuals are welcome to enter into that debate, a debate which today occurs in the mass media. Looking at four nonviolent environmental and environmental justice groups, DeLuca argues that the success of their protests against hegemonic forces now lies in the image event itself rather than the immediate cessation of the offense in question. Success comes about through a direct action: Forcing people (audiences) out of comfortable ignorance into a questioning of the status quo (pp. 1-3). The violent counterresponses (pp. 8-9) from the corporations and governments being protested, in light of the failed (inability to stop the present offense) direct actions by the environmental groups, underscores the author's contention of the redefinition of success. Through this challenge of the mainstream discourse (industrialism and progress) (p. 6), the direct actions of the groups DeLuca analyzes become symbolically charged, expected to fail in immediate terms. Success instead comes through increased visibility and public support. By challenging the legitimacy of the establishment" (p. 15), the groups are, according to DeLuca, considering "the implications for rhetoric of extralinguistic confrontational activities" (p. 15). To critical rhetorical scholars, DeLuca becomes one of the vanguards who asserts that the visual realm, which has for too long been ignored by the field, is not only as important, but more so than spoken or written rhetoric in the political public sphere. Through this analysis, DeLuca explores how radical environmental groups are reconstituting the identity of the dominant culture (p. 16) rather than forming their own. In conclusion, this work is of great importance to the academy, especially the field of rhetoric. DeLuca's book begins to fill the dearth of work on media and the environment. It begins anew the research of social movements in this postmodern era. Importantly, it gifts the activist groups legitimacy and credence, which does have the potential to greater effect social change, an ideal conditional for every work in the academy.

Pocket and Reference Book

For us we have used it as a pocket and reference book in our facility.

Most imaging books on trauma are either written by the physicians for the physicians or the radiologists for the radiologists.

Fortunately, this book provides the best of both worlds. Easy to read and explanation provided that gives meaning to why we do this and that in our facilities.

Perhaps an update would include more radiographs or line drawings which would make reading easier.

All you ever need while on duty

This small book makes it easy to carry around while at work for quick references.

There are useful tables and best of all recommendations on the types of view (plain radiographs) that would be appropriate for each situation. In addition, highlighting the advantages of using a particular view.

There are overviews, on how to improve and reduce risk of missing abnormalities on films taken at the emergency department.

Overall, the book is divided into chapters that are sensible that makes referencing easy. I would recommend this book for physicians (especially trauma), nurses, technologists and interns/housemans.

In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons module A4)

A4: In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords is an AD&D (1st edition) adventure module for six to eight characters of level four to seven. This module picks up immediately after A3: Assault on the Aerie of the Slave Lords, with the player characters (PCs) rotting in the Slave Lords' dungeon. But, all is not well on the island of the Slave Lords, and their priests are looking around for a likely sacrifice to the Earth Dragon - guess who they pick? As such, without their fancy equipment, the PCs are dropped into the labyrinth beneath the island, hopefully to die. Can they survive? It will take skill, teamwork, and a little luck!

This module is the last in a series of four. These modules are generally considered four of the finest modules to come out of AD&D 1st edition, and no one should skip past them. This module has some interesting twists, with the character being stripped of all of the "goodies" that they have come to rely on, and really forces them to think hard and be creative. I loved this module, and so did the players who ran through it. By the way, besides having an interesting story, and some great villains, this module has four new monsters - the Cave Fisher, Magman, Myconid, and Sandling.

So, if you are running an AD&D campaign, and want to treat your players to one of the best adventures every written, then get this module!

What's a sure way to horrify any group of veteran players? Imprison them, take away all of their items (even clothing!), steal all their spells, then leave them for dead in the pitch-black caverns of an erupting volcano. One of the most evil adventures for AD&D; if you're the DM, of course, it's also one of the most fun! Besides S1 Tomb of Horrors, this adventure is the ULTIMATE test of player ingenuity and heroism. A true classic for levels 4-7, highest recommendation.

This book depicts the best from collections of early Native American Pueblo silverwork. The photographs allow the reader to identify key characteristic features of traditional Native American jewelry. The informative verbal descriptions do not insult the reader nor the makers. There are few books that portray the early Southwest jewelry as well as this one.

This book was an incredibly short read for me who is usually a slow reader. But the impact was felt long after the cover was closed, and I will return and read it again. Powerfully moving, filling in between the lines of the gospel in an area that the apostles didn't give much detail.

This book is a beautiful gift from John Piper. It was an advent poem written for his congregation in Minneapolis. It will touch your heart deeply and then, at the end, the gospel! I have given this book to many as a gift. Buy it for anyone you wish to bless with the gift of Jesus. The illustrations are beautiful sketches by John Lawrence. It may be given as a gift to a child with caution. (read it yourself first and decide.)
