Lawrence Dorr creates the most unforgettable characters! Each and every one leads to a better understanding of the world and a greater acceptance of others. The stories in this collection are filled with extraordinary kindnesses that always seem to come when we least expect it; but more importantly, Dorr shows the reader the only way to transcend the limitations of the physical world. I love this writer and only want to say PLEASE MR. DORR, GIVE US MORE, MORE, MORE.

Review Date: 1999-05-05
These twelve stories reflect the experiences and emotions Hungarian-born writer Lawrence Dorr suffered in his war-torn homeland before and during World War II , and after his move to America. As a young lad, Dorr faced the Germans, was posted on the front in excruciating cold, was wounded, found his family killed, and his ancestral home consfiscated. After making a daring escape from the Communists, he wandered throughout Europe holding a variety of jobs, from working a loom in a British cotton mill to being a teacher. These situations are the details and threads by which Dorr weaves stories that tell of the anguish he suffered as an exile. They also illustrate in graphic detail the horror people can perpretrate on others, and on a country, in the name of patriotism and honor. Because the revelations about human nature in these stories are so honest, they are often difficult to read and/or accept, but the reader leaves them wiser and more aware of God's grace. Dorr's characters and plots reveal a love and humanity that heals. Simple and kind acts extended to someone physically or emotionally wounded reveal that good exists, even if given by those who seemingly have lost all dignity. In other stories, Dorr shows the redemptive values of family, nature, worship, and even domestic rituals. In that sense, Dorr is a religious writer. His peace comes from an unshakable knowledge that God is good and that mercy is a gift. Door's writing is spare, lean, and masculine. A gifted writer, his images, descriptions, and writing style attest to his extensive knowledge of and familiarity with the classics, music, and art. It is no wonder that Dorr was nominated for a a Pulitzer prize in fiction. His writings and characters speak of anger, intrigue, passion, humor, love, and friendships. This book is compelling. Dorr is one of America's finest writers of fiction

An Extraordinary Encounter With The Divine

Review Date: 2001-07-28
After seeing the Goddess in his childhood, years later, while sitting in a meditation hall, Dr. Edwards has six consecutive visions of six different forms of the Goddess prior to Kali lighting up his inner space with one cosmic revelation after another, culminating in profound realizations and a message from Kali.

The Goddess then directs him to share her "gift" to him with others by writing it all down and getting it published. He is shown in visions what to write along with commentaries by the Goddess, presented to him as scenes in his mind. Dr. Edwards is just as amazed as his readers will be, and humbled by his cosmic visitations from Kali. Moreover, his surprise and humility at being "chosen" by the Divine give his words a solid ring of truth.

Dr. Edwards extraordinary encounter with the Divine is one of the most impressive and inspiring books I have ever read about Kundalini. Perhaps devotion to the Mother Goddess is the highest path to fully awakening Kundalini with a Mother's Love guiding you safely home.

Walking the Walk

At last! A book on the spiritual path written by someone who has walked the walk instead of just talking the talk. Edwards' descriptions of personal revelations by the Goddess, dating from his early childhood, give clarity, inspiration and hope to all those yearning in their lives for a closer connection with the divine. This book inspires awe at the infinite beauty, grace and love which has flowed from the Goddess in Her many forms directly to the author's mind and soul. Just as importantly, though, it is a sobering reminder of the challenges, struggles and dangers of the spiritual quest which arise from the darkness of our own shadow side, and which we must continually acknowledge, confront and release in order ultimately to open ourselves fully to the ever-present divine love and grace enfolding us. We see that these revelations, both positive and negative, were the product of years of intense and serious cultivation under the tutelage of a truly enlightened Master. Such devotion and perseverance, especially in the face of inner demons and outer tribulations, are the inevitable offerings necessary eventually to bear the ecstatic spiritual fruit that it has been the author's delight to have experienced. But what is also impressive is the sense throughout that the author sees himself as a human being, like the rest of us, working to get through daily life and dealing with the myriad confusions, vices, and temptations that plague us all. His commitment to confront these issues as consciously as possible is what makes this book, and his example, accessible as a "better way" to deal with our own issues. It also gives the hope that, by following this "better way", we may ourselves one day personally experience the loving presence and guidance of the Goddess just as he has. This book, and especially the chapter presenting the allegory of "The Bird of a Thousand Lights", came at an especially critical point in my own spiritual development. Reading that chapter brought an immediate intuitive sense of recognition. Being able to identify with the protagonist on his quest and to see clearly both where I stood in my own journey, and what the path ahead held for me, lent tremendous encouragement at a time when my situation seemed at a low ebb. As a long time follower of the spiritual path, I have often "found" a book which, after reading it, I knew was the "right book at the right time". "The Soul's Journey" was one such book for me, and I trust that it will be for many other "seekers" as well. I highly recommend it!

I deeply appreciate the journey which reading Lawrence Edward's book began for me which continues now almost a year later. The images and concepts outlined in the stories he told became metaphors for my own personal journey of self discovery which I have found most enlightening and personally gratifiying.

I think the path to self awareness is many and varied and often fraught with false starts and distractions. This book helped me recognize some of my own false starts and encouraged me to maintain my own focus and delve within rather than seeking beyond my own experience and truth for answers.

The language is accessible and jargonless which was quite a relief from similar texts on the subject. I also enjoyed the linkages to modern analytical and humanistic psychology as a means for grounding the concepts of energy and kundalini and consciousness in a familiar paradigm for most Westerners like myself.

I look forward his next book.

The author is a psychologist with strong graduate training in mathematics and statistics. He did his graduate work at Princeton and as his dedication indicates. he was very much influenced by the work of John Tukey (who he probably took courses from at Princeton in addition to later interactions). Abelson is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and is very knowledgeable on the statistical literature from the 1940s up to the present.
The book is mostly expository with a lot of dialogue and interesting applications. Applications are concentrated in psychology, a field that Abelson is most familiar with but coverage is not restricted to psychology. He covers examples from sports, gambling and medicine as well and some of these examples are very good at making points about common misunderstandings a perceptions about probability and statistics.

A main theme is the importance of a reasoned or principled argument in the presentation of results from a statistical analysis. Abelson points out that many researchers are afraid of mathematics and statistics and use it only as a necessary tool in a research project. They want to find a method for turnng the crank and reaching a conclusion. Abelson recognizes that this causes trouble.

There is too much reliance on the 0.05 significance level. Researchers fail to understand the use of a null hypothesis or the fact that conclusion of hypothesis tests are not black and white and have possible errors associated with them. Most researchers do not understand the subtleties of the interpretation of p-values or confidence intervals and many do not know or understand the difference between the frequentist and Bayesian approaches.

Abelson is careful to articulate all of this in a way that statisticians would be proud of and hopefully it will be understandable to researchers as well.

He also spends time in the text describing the counterintuitive streaky nature of random sequences. He refers to this by saying "Chance is lumpy." He illustrate this with examples from ESP experimentation and the study of the hot hand in basketball. This is all time well spent. Abelson also points out the gambler's fallacy of believing that a batter is "due" for a hit if he has not gotten one for many at bats or that red should come up on the next spin of the roulette wheel after a string of 5 or 6 blacks.

Equivalence and multiple comparisons are two topics that are well-covered in the book. The author also speaks well for Tukey's exploratory approach to data analysis and includes some graphics including stem-and-leaf plots. But aside from a few graphs and tables, there is very little mathematics and no formulas or derivations. This can make it a little difficult for the mathematical statisticians at times. Yet this may be viewed as a blessing by the less mathematically inclined researcher.

In any case it is worth reading for anyone involved in statistical analysis especially graduate students and researchers.

This is a great book. Everyone who uses statistics in any way should read it. Maybe everyone who READS articles that contain statistics should read it! The mathematics is minimal (very few formulas, and those are basic), but a lot of very good advice on how to use statistics sensibly (and how it is sometimes used nonsensically!).

This is the most informative book on statistics that I have ever read. In every chapter there is something to stimulate thinking. I only wish someone had recommended it to me last decade rather than last year.

Anyone who has struggled to try and integrate the many different facets of statistics and research will find that Abelson has done a magnificent job supported by enlightening examples and comprehensive references.

As a victim of the public school educational system, I wish I had this book in high school and college when my teachers and professors were trying to fill my brain with socialist nonsense. It would have made defending my libertarian views that much easier. This is a very easy book to read and each essay makes its own point very clearly and succinctly without the convoluted jargon that text book writers like. This would make a great first text book for high school age homeschoolers as well as public school victims, who want to know how to defend their right to a REAL education.

It is too easy to become negative when assessing the state of our world today. Government seems to be invading our lives at every turn; taking our liberties and making us less safe and less prosperous. There are plenty of books out there which complain about the world, or laud this or that person or policy as our salvation. Lawrence W. Reed's "Striking the Root" goes beyond simple cliche and, as its title suggests, gets to the heart of the matter.

Reed avoids the all-too-easy opportunity to simply complain about government largess, and instead offers hope and solutions. While the compilation of poignant essays does not hold back when it comes to analyzing and describing problems with our loss of liberty, it is done in Reeds signature "pathologically optimistic" style. Reed offers solutions, but nothing as easy as simple electoral change. The challenge in the book is also the answer to our loss of liberty - that each individual understand and value freedom more than we value political favors, comfort, and the illusionary "safety" of big government.

I highly recommend the book to lovers of liberty and those skeptical of the power of human freedom alike!

A wonderful read!

Review Date: 2008-03-22
In this collection of 24 essays, Lawrence Reed intends to demonstrate the superiority of individual liberty over all forms of political coercion. The columns, spanning from the early early nineties to present day, are written in the style that has become characteristic of Reed's writing and speaking: insightful and concise. One need not pick up a thick economics book to learn the lessons wonderfully presented here.

The essays are divided into three groups. The first seeks to explore various misconceptions undermining freedom. The second looks at the essential virtues of a free people, and finally in "The Triumphant Future" Reed discusses signs we'll see as we inevitably get closer to our destiny of freedom.

This short tour de force of freedom ideas discusses everything from government education, government golf courses, the true meaning of patriotism, and taxation in a civil society. Even though some of the columns are older their lessons are timeless. It is full of curious facts about socialist think tanks, voting in the founding era, the growth of government, and government aid (or lack thereof) in the aftermath of Katrina. I highly recommend this book. Striking the Root is light reading that teaches great lessons never to be outdated.

I am the kind of person that is not going to buy or "buy into" a book unless it is supported by some reasonable evidence. If you're like me, then you'll love this book. It is based on a study recently conducted at the Tufts University. In short, the study used a program of exercise and nutrition to combat arthritis. The results? Pain was reduced by a whopping 43%!

Key to their program was strengthening exercises which have been shown in other studies as well as being extremely beneficial for arthritis patients. I am very pleased with books like these that offer sound treatments based on research. If you like these kind of books too and also suffer from back pain, I can recommend "The Multifidus Back Pain Solution" (available here at amazon.ca too) that is based on randomized controlled trials and involves only one exercise you do at home that strengthens your multifidus muscles found to be abnormal in many people with back pain. So start reading, start exercising, and start getting better!

I was recently diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis, and I started following the nutritional suggestions in this book. I think it's already starting to help! Plus it tells you how to perform strengthening exercises for your aching joints. I am a big fan of Dr. Nelson's other works. I like how she explains the science and the applications. I plan to share this with my mom, who also has osteoarthritis.

This is an excellent work on the alternative medicinal and
conventional medicine protocols for arthritis. Dr. Nelson
mentions various Vit C dietary combinations utilizing
orange juice, strawberries or grapefruit to provide Vit. C.
Next, the authors cite important anti-inflammatory combos;
such as, Omega 3 fish oil and flaxseed oil. Sunflower oil
has the requisite Omega 6 ingredients. Sulfasalazine and
methotrexate are important protocols for treating seronegative
spondylarthropathies. In addition, the lungs, heart and eyes
may be impacted by ankylosing spondylitis and related diseases.
For instance, Iritis may impact the eyes. Calcification of
the heart valves and electronic problems with the heart have
been noted. Decreased lung capacity is another important
resultant of ankylosing spondylitis.

The authors point out that Chronic Juvenile Arthritis stunts
growth. In addition, the SED RATE (sedimentation rate) and
rhematoid factor are the gold standard for blood tests to
detect arthritis. In my own experience, the MOST- micro-oxidative
stress test may be helpful in articulating the yeast component
as an aggravating factor in arthritic conditions.

The authors provide an important series of exercises which
may be helpful for arthritic patients. The physical therapy
training consists of moderate squatting, toe stand
(standing erect on your toes), moderate push-ups by pressing
the wall, back extensions by facing the floor and raising the
head, modified sit-ups, knee extension flexing, full range
motion employing light weights in torque motion, face flat on
the floor raising the back legs, the lunge stretch,
cross-over hips, placing one knee on the chair and standing
upright or erect, shoulder stretches and a host of others.
Dr. Nelson indicates that excess joint fluid is a sign of
inflammation. In addition, surgical intervention can be
helpful. For instance, an artificial joint may last 15-20 years.
Acupuncture helps to stimulate endomorphins and change blood
flow patterns. There is evidence that acupuncture relieves
arthritis, although there is less evidence for Chiropractic.
This book is worth the price. It provides important alternative
medicinal protocols for arthritis as well as classic physical
therapy exercises aimed at preserving joint mobility and
elasticity. I would supplement the exercises with Alpha
Lipoic Acid to enhance bodily elasticity. In my own experience,
Northern Polar magnets may be helpful if strategically placed.

Jinx Slater can do no wrong at Stagmount School for Girls in Brighton, England. She can even convince her best friend Liberty Lattife's father to let Liberty remain at Stagmount for previous transgressions. The only person that Jinx can't sweet talk is the house-mistress of their dorm. But Jinx and her friends have been able to get away with tormenting her and not getting in too serious of trouble.

But after the start of term, Stella Fox, the new girl, arrives. Jinx and the rest of her friends know that Stella isn't all she seems to be. But Liberty has been trapped under her spell.

Jinx knows someone that went to Stella's old school and contacts her while home on holiday to get the scoop. Stella didn't leave her old school the way she says. Now Jinx knows that Liberty is in way over her head. But Liberty doesn't want to believe Jinx, thinking Jinx is just jealous that she has a new friend.

The story unfolds slowly with a lot of background information on their histories at Stagmount since this is the first book in the THOSE GIRLS series. But once Stella arrives, things begin to move along swiftly. Jinx and her friends form a strong bond and do everything they can to prevent Liberty from being led astray by the newcomer who isn't what she seems.

Jinx is a strong character who becomes a pit-bull to defend her friend, even if her friend doesn't think she needs her protection. Jinx is a breath of fresh air in the normal boarding school genre, where the main character is usually out to get only what she wants for herself. She's not mean to be mean, but to be protective of her friends. I look forward to the next installment to see what hijinks the girls of Stagmount can get themselves into!

This book was thoroughly enjoyable. I loved that the girls weren't all anorexics, and loved to eat. I don't think that the suggestion to buy the Chalet Girls with this book is a good idea, though. The two books are worlds apart, literally. I thought that the Chalet Girls was insipid and very unrealistic, while this book,Those Girls, was great! I don't see how the Chalet Girls could even be believable to a 12 or 13 yr old.

If you like books like Gossip Girl,The A-List or Pretty little Liars, this book is sure to please. Its takes a group of girls in a UK school and lets us watch as they claw (or attempt to anyways) their way up the social ladder. Each character is unique and im sure with each character youll find yourself saying "Oh my god shes just like....." You wont want to put it down. Get ready for a cat fight because......we all know THOSE GIRLS!

What a fun, breakout book from Sara Lawrence, with a laugh on almost every page. If this is what public school is like in the UK, then count me in for my next life. "Those Girls" know how to live it up and enjoy life! Each of the main characters is likeable and an exaggerated version of a girl we all know--or knew. I am already looking forward to the sequel... and the movie!

Excellent read - fun, informative, insightful. Should be great learning tool for those new to the M&A world, and both healthy and entertaining to those who have experience already. Lederman is a very bright guy, and his writing style is that of a fine story-teller. Always clear... always interesting. An "older" book now, but gives interesting fundamentals to foundational strategies still important in 2000. (I just re-read, and am glad I did)

Excellent Personal Story of Legal Side of Corporate Finance

I enjoyed Lederman's writing style and imagine him to be a fairly modest man of extraordinary talent. I hold the CFA designation and my reading choices tend to be finance oriented with an occasional foray into pulp like "Rainmaker", "Predator's Ball", "Liar's Poker", and the other usual suspects. "Tombstones" renewed my appreciation for the legal aspects of M&A, which are introduced here by way of an interesting personal history. Lederman provides an introduction, rather than an exhaustive study, of tax and legal issues. This book drew me in much more than "Big Deal", which I have yet to finish. I recommend both, given Wasserstein's obvious accomplishments and his more contemporary account. "Tombstones" is first and foremost a very good story and thus more engrossing. Also, the lengthy disourse on Ian Reich was heartfelt and of peculiar interest given his reemergence on the front page of the WSJ.

Great book. Hearing the stories from the inside, it'll make you skin crawl to read about the largess of the 1980's. The book covers all the "greats": Keating, Pickens, Reagan and Miklen to name a few. This book would make a great movie.

M&A Dealmaking At Its Best

Having taken an M&A course in law school and heard Larry Lederman tell personal stories of his M&A days, I had to read this book. It was insightful and read like a novel, despite covering large amounts of technical and financial data. Larry covers his beginning days of doing deals at Cravath and later at Wachtell, engineering some of the most novel dealmaking the world has ever seen in the process. Larry's sharp mind and hard work, along with a handful of other New York lawyers and bankers in the 1980s, helped transform the market into what it is today. Recommended read for any M&A lawyer or banker or for someone aspiring to be such.
